Boot Camp Partitioning Issues

I'm trying to use boot camp to partition a section of my HD for Windows, but before the partitioning finishes it says that I need to restore my drive to Mac OSX Journal or something...
Does anyone know what this error means? I'm running 10.5.1 on a MBP.

It sounds like your hard drive does not have Journaling turned on. This is an option that is set in Apple Disk Utility. Journaling is used to track all changes to a drive so that it can recover from errors and should only be turned off for drives used in intensive read/write uses like video production.
Your drive is probably not able to give up enough space for the Bootcamp partition because there are files or fragments of files in the area it needs to use. The bootcamp partition needs to be in one contiguous space.
I'm curious how your drive got set up without the default Journaling setting.
If you're running Time Machine, you can boot from the Leopard DVD, set up your hard drive properly, and reinstall your OS by telling the installer to use your TM backup for restore.

OS X Yosemite (10.10.3) Boot Camp Partition Issue

I just updated the system to OS X 10.10.3 with the OS X Yosemite Recovery Update too. My boot camp partition went missing!!! I checked Disk Utility to see what is happening, the reply is "Repair the disk", when i click on Repair, it say the disk cannot not be repaired and needs to be reformat. Any one know what is happening?

Boot Camp Partition issue (still on OS X 10.4.8)

Hi all,
I'm trying to get Windows 7 up and running on my 2 year old MacBook Pro. Just bought the full version of Home Premium, as I've never installed any Windows on my mac before. Also, I haven't gotten Snow Leopard yet, so I'm still on OS X 10.5.8, which I think means a slightly older Boot Camp.
So I go in to Boot Camp Assistant and try to partition my 50 free gigs into about 20 for windows and 30 for mac. Trying several times, it always comes up with the error "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" and says I should back up my disk, make sure it is formatted as OS Extended (Journaled), and restore the disk from the backup. This is the part I don't know how to do exactly. Is it saying I have to basically wipe my HD and restore it from my external HD? Under restore in the Disk Utility I can drag my external drive into the "source" box, but can't put my mac HD in the "destination" box.
So, anyone have any tips on how to move forward with the partitioning? Is it merely a space issue like I think, or is it a larger problem having to do with not being on Snow Leopard yet? I appreciate any advice or suggestions, I'm sick of spending so long trying to figure this out, haha.

I wish Apple would expand their own tutorial. The Boot Camp pdf; the FAQ; but it can be done with your OS X DVD and Apple Disk Utility's Restore; with other programs that are free, but require (essential to my thinking) that you have another drive or partition that you can boot from.
Windows and you have rescue CDs. With a Mac you can have and boot OS X from multiple hard drives.
Install OS X to drive #2 and use that to erase and restore.
TimeMachine is 'okay' but you can't boot from it. And I've got to say a bootable backup is more important tool.
The two most popular are Carbon Copy Cloner

SuperDuper from Shirt-Pocket Software, free for full copy, $29 for smart update of backup. Great PDF and of course no one looks to use the Help menu in programs (like Disk Utility even).
Those backups can be important and handy to have before installing any Mac OS update.
And there should be some 'Stickies' or "Most Popular Threads" or something because this question has been at some times a daily topic.

Boot Camp partition issue

Hi everyone!
I got my first MacBook Pro today, it's a 17 inch from 2010 (About This Mac tells me it's a MacBook 6,1 for what that's worth!) and I need to install Windows. OS X is great, but I'm still learning it and my games don't play on it. I tried running the Boot Camp Assistant and it keeps throwing up an error like "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition" and I don't know how to get around it. When I got the MacBook (which I bought from a friend), I used the OS X install disk and reinstalled the operating system. I wiped the hard drive with Disk Utility and did a clean install. I checked and I'm not seeing any other partitions.
Can anyone give me a hand here?

How can I get Lion to recognize my boot camp partition.

Yesterday morning I found my mac suffered from a b-tree failure and was unable to access OS X 10.6. I ended up booting into my Boot camp partition of Windows XP and backed it up then reinstalled Snow leopard. Then I upgraded to Lion, saw it fail due to a partitioning issue, created a 2gb partition called Mac HD 2 (by shrinking mac hd), saw i could install but not full install. So I created another partition and installed Lion successfully. Got into Lion and shrunk my 2x 2GB partitions into one 4GB partition. My Windows XP hard drive boot camp partition was still on my desktop. I can access all the files but I can not boot into it. When I hold down the option key there is only Mac HD or Recovery partition.
Is there any way to get the boot camp partition to work?
I did notice that when I was looking through the settings I could choose which HD was the default boot option. Mac hd with 10.7 and a folder called Windows XP were both available.

We also cannot get Robohelp to recognize our FrameMaker installation.
We are using Robohelp 9 and Framemaker 11.
We are in the process of moving all of our Robohelp content to Framemaker, but our project team still needs CHM files for the next release or so. So we figured we could move our content to Frame 11, then import the Frame content into Robohelp when we needed to generate the CHM files.
The process works great when we use RH 10 and Frame 11, but we get the following error when we use RH 9:
"This operation cannot be completed without FrameMaker. Install FrameMaker and try again."
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Frame 11 and RH 9, but am still getting the same error. Buying a set of new Robohelp 10 licenses probably isn't an option.
Any other suggestions?

Windows will not boot to my boot camp partition on a DIY fusion drive - gives "No bootable device found" error

I have a MacBookPro 9,1 (mid-2012, non-retina) running OS X 10.8.2. Here is what I have done to my system:
Installed Windows 7 x64 Pro to a boot camp partition; installed all windows updates.
Using WinClone, save an image of this boot camp partition.
Removed optical drive and HDD.
Installed HDD in place of optical drive.
Installed SSD in place of HDD.
Booted to recovery partition, installed OS X on a flash drive.
Booted to flash drive, created fusion drive using [MacWorld's instructions](http://www.macworld.com/article/2014011/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html)
Booted to recovery partition on flash drive.
Restored system to fusion drive from a Time Machine backup. Unfortunately, it seems that because I never installed OS X on my fusion drive, I do not have a recovery partition. But that's an issue for another day.
Using Boot Camp assistant, created a boot camp partition on my HDD.
Using WinClone, restore my Windows installation from the previously created image.
Now, Windows boots to a black screen telling me that it can't find a bootable device. I have tried a few things to resolve this, all without effect:
I know that VMware Fusion has to prepare a boot camp partition in order to virtualize it, so I figured it might inadvertently fix things. Alas, while it *did* successfully boot my boot camp partition into a virtual machine, I still can't boot into Windows.
I figured I'd just try to reinstall Windows. Surprisingly, my system booted to my Windows install disc, which was in my original optical drive (which I had put in a USB case). But, Windows refused to install, giving me a an error 0x8030024. It seems the solution to this issue is to disconnect all drives but the one on which you want to install Windows, which is something I would dearly like to avoid. It would be a pain, but more than that, I'm afraid it would bork my fusion drive, even if I'm careful to never boot to OS X with the SSD disconnected.
A lot of places said that this error results from a borked MBR, and suggest using a tool like gptfdisk to rewrite it. I followed the instructions [here](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4144252?start=0&tstart=0), but *that* didn't work either.
I am now completely at a loss as to how to proceed, and Google isn't much help either.

My setup is very similar to your's, Ryan, on a Mac Mini5,2 and the ordering is different and Winclone was not used.
1. New Mini with internal 500GB with Mountain Lion(ML), put into an external FW enclosure, so the Mini can/could be booted using an external drive for contigency.
2. Replaced internal stock HDD (500Gb/5400rpm) with SSD/HDD (256Gb SSD/1TB 5400rpm).
3. Installed W7 x64 on 64GB partition on HDD, which was a single-partition drive to begin with.
4. The remaining HDD partition and the entire SSD was put into a Fusion drive.
5. Using Command-R, new ML installed on Fusion HD.

Windows 8 installer doesn't want to format the boot camp partition

Hello,
I followed this instructions : http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/45898/how-to-install-windows-8-on-a-mac
All works but the installer doesn't want to format the boot camp partition, i click on "option" > "format", i wait like 3-4 seconds (so not enought to format 100Go) and then same error "Windows can't be installed on this partition".
Any idea ?
I have :
Macbook Pro 15'' 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5
Mac OS X v10.7.5
1 Drive : 320Go
1 USB KEY that i used to install osx lion, so i think it's not the problem.
1 Windows8 64 downloaded from my university, and it works on a PC.

I have the same issue. Dec. 2013 13" macbook pro with 1tb ssd. Windows 8 Pro (have the box/cd).
Why is it that I can find every computer problem I ever have in a thread somewhere where someone else had the same problem too....but the threads never have solutions. There should be a name for this phenomenon.

Boot Camp Partition and OS X Cloning Apps?

I've tried a search of previous posts and can't get a bulletproof answer. Here goes:
Using XP SP3 in a Boot Camp partition on my iMac running Snow Leopard. Only one complaint (the metal keyboard Option key issue for boot up -- really lame).
The Windows partition is for two financial applications, mission critical ones. I copy the key data files over to my Mac side after using these Windows apps.
I back up my Mac side with SuperDuper! My mission critical files are thus picked up by my SuperDuper! routine. I've tried restoring them and it works without a hitch.
My question is: if my system HD goes south, will my SuperDuper! clone restore the previous partition structure on the new system HD? Also, I've always assumed I'd have to reinstall the Windows apps individually and replace the mission critical data files one by one in a separate process. Is this right?
I also keep Time Machine backups running. They pick up those mission critical copies brought over to my Mac side. Same questions re: a replacement system HD -- will the partition structure be restored, and am I right in understanding the apps and files on the Windows side are up to me to restore outside any Time Machine rescue.

Hi Terry,
your assumption is correct.
Neither SuperDuper nor Time Machine will clone or backup your Windows partition since both only handle harddisk/partitions that use the MacOS Extended file system.
Files that are on such harddisks/partitions are cloned/backuped regardless of their nature or origin.
So of you copy files from your WIndows partition to your OSX partition like your mission critical files, these are then cloned/backuped when using SuperDuper or Time Machine.
And yes, when booting from your external harddisk with the cloned OSX and then using SuperDuper to clone this OSX back to your internal harddisk all the files (and therefor also your mission critical files) are back "in place".
Same goes for when using a Time Machine backup for a full system restore.
After that you would have to reinstall Windows and the Windows programs to get it all back.
Currently Casper http://www.fssdev.com/products/casper/ is considered the best solution for a full Windows backup/restore.
Mike Bombich, the author of Carbon Copy Cloner (another cloning app for OSX) is to my knowledge working on an addition to CCC to clone or backup a BootCamp Windows.
But it's way too early to see any results on this.

Upgrading to OS X Lion - Effects on Boot Camp partition

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running the latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard and I also have a Boot Camp partition with Windows 7 in it.
Will upgrading to OS X Lion using the Mac App Store affect my Boot Camp partition? Any recommendations on how I should do this?

External hard drives are the cheapest insurance you can
get for a computer. Even if you don't update, there is always
a chance the hard drive or even the computer could die.
Any way, I installed Lion on two machines with Bootcamp
partitions and had no issues. Both were Windows7 64 bit.
I think it just grabs the 650 meg it uses from the OSX
partition.

Creating and restoring a Boot Camp partition using Paragon

I am trying to restore a clone of the Boot Camp partition that's on my MacBook Air (Snow Leopard) to My MacBook Pro (Lion).
I was told I could do this without requiring the Windows 7 installation disk by using Paragon Hard Disk Manager.
I downloaded the Paragon Hard Disk Manager on the MacBook Air in the Windows partition and followed the steps the Wizard told me. I chose back up. I successfully backed up the Boot Camp partition but noticed that the amount of disk space on the back up external drive was about 8GB, but the amount used up by Boot Camp was 16 GB.
When I went into the new computer and tried to create a Boot Camp partition, I am not able to do this without installing Windows software.
When I plugged in the external drive which had the back up on it, it just has some files and no Wizard I can use to restore the Windows partition.
So I think I've done it wrongly.
When I first started the wizard, there was a choice of making an image. I did choose this initially and a message came up and said I had done this but there was nothing else - no information about where this image was and what I should do with it. So I chose "Back up" and that is where I am.
Even if I do manage to create an image that contains everything, the operating system and the files, how can I restore that to the newly created Boot Camp partition on the other computer if in order to create the Boot Camp partition I need to install a Windows 7 disk?
It's not that I don't have a valid Windows 7 installation disk, I do but I have to call telephone support to install it because the activation is tied to the first laptop which has issues and needs to be repaired and that's why I am doing the migration of the data. And it's inconvenient to do the telephone thing because it's after hours now and I want to get the clone of the Windows partition before I send off the computer for repairs which I am supposed to do tomorrow morning.
Plus, I am not sure by using the Windows 7 installation disk and migration of data method that I will have the partition looking exactly the same as before, and that's very important for me because I do internet banking with a foreign bank and it took ages for them to set up the internet banking on my computer, and I am worried that internet banking won't work if I do not have an exact clone of the Windows partition.
I can go back again and try making an image disk but I still have the problem of using the Paragon program which is a Windows program on the Mac operating system, which I have to use when I am creating the Windows partition. Is there other software from Paragon that I am supposed to get?

Paragon didn't work for me and their support is quite lousy. I think I just threw $50 away.
I didn't need another activation key to install Windows 7 on the second computer (MBP). The boot camp installation went smoothly. Once in Windows, I downloaded the software again, Paragon Hard Disk Manager, and then chose "restore". It didn't recognize the archive I had made on the external hard drive no matter what I did. I had to give up after a few tries.
So I went to the Paragon website to look for answers in the support section.
They do not respond to emailed support questions for up to three days after you send in the question even if you are a new customer.
I am tempted to ask for a refund because they have false advertising claiming that their product works when it doesn't.
The steps are not that hard to follow if you use their Wizard and the Wizard told me that I had done everything right and that I had created an archive and I named it and everything.
When I went to restore it, nothing. I couldn't even eject the volume. Very strange.
Their FAQ on Support site is unhelpful and full of technical terminology. Nothing pertains to my problem.
I really don't want the headache. Besides if all I wanted was to do a backup I could have used the free back up and restore utility in Windows 7 which is meant to be excellent.
Another Apple Support Discussion member said they had a similar problem, a problem with the archives, and that even after working with Paragon for seven months, it was still not resolved.
After a certain period of time after you've bought the product, you have to pay $50 to get support. It's not worth the bother.
It's a German company and German companies in general are not big into service. I can tell that this is true with this company.
So having been burned, I really do not want to keep going down this path. I really just want my money back.

Backup to TImeCapsule including Boot Camp partition

I used Boot Camp to install Windows 7 Professional on my new MacBook Air, and have now got Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac working OK with a Windows Virtual Machine. But I am reluctant to remove the Boot Camp partition. Now I have got TIme Capsule/Time Machine working OK for automatic backups - but the BootCamp/Windows stuff is not being backed up. Can anyone tell me how to include the Boot Camp partition and all my Windows-based work in the automatic backup 'of the entire machine' (the reason I bought a Time Capsule) to Time Capsule? It seems that only the MAC side of the machine is being backed up hourly by Time Machine. Can't find anything in Knowledge Base or Help about this. Thanks!

No. But you can create a +disk image+ on it, and back up the Windoze side to it, if you can find an app that will work. Possible. But they generally don't seem to have much training on Time Machine or Time Capsules.
Info on the whole question of backup & data protection is fairly thin in the Apple world - or am I looking in tihe wrong place or calling it the wrong thing? thanks

Firewire Target DIsk Mode Mac partition not Boot Camp partition

Hi I'm having issues starting up my Mac and would like to Firewire mount the drive then image it. However, when I do so the Boot Camp partition mounts instead of the Mac partition. I've tried using Disk Utility on the host machine to mount the Mac partition (it does show up in Disk Utility) without success, Is there anything I can do.
(Yes I have yesterday's Time Machine backup, but would still prefer to do a full image before wiping and installing the OS).

Are you talking about starting up one computer in Target Disk Mode and then seeing it with a second computer (and if so, which model computer and which OS)?

Access Boot Camp Partition via Fusion or Parallels

I already have a 20gb Vista partition on my Mac is it possible to access that via Fusion or Parallels without rebooting?

I use Fusion with a boot camp partition containing Windows Vista. No issues when running both Leopard and Fusion with Windows.
One thing to note though and that is if you are planning to play Windows based games via Fusion then forget it. It will be very slow and in most cases unplayable due to speed. Now, if you are running productivity software (MS Office for Windows etc) then you will love this convenience.

The Invisible Boot Camp Partition

Basically, my Windows partition does not show up on my Mac side of things.
It shows up in Disk Utility as "disk0s3" but is not mountable. It cannot be mounted if I use the MacFuse and NTFS-3G solution. It cannot be mounted with Paragon's NTFS for Mac OSX. If I open up VMWare Fusion it detects a Boot Camp partition but cannot run it saying instead there is not mountable device. Also, in System Profiler, the partition does not show up under the Serial-ATA section where my OS X partition does.
That being said, Windows runs fine with no issues that I've found.
The way I had to install it was via a work-around since I'm another one of those people who could not format my partition during the installation process. Instead I partitioned via Boot Camp, then used an Ubuntu disk to format the volume to NTFS and install Windows, which worked perfectly sans the OS X side of trouble.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem be it either reinstalling Windows another way or may figuring out why OS X can't see it?

Solution: Remove the volume and reinstall windows via another method. Hopefully 10.5.2 will fix the Boot Camp issues...

All files on Boot Camp partition mysteriously erased after 10.5.3 update

My wife's MBP 2.4 was running 10.5.2 with a Boot Camp installation of Windows XP. The other night she upgraded to 10.5.3 and everything on her Boot Camp partition was erased somehow.
She spent most of the day working in Windows. During the day someone gave her a usb key with some photos on it that when she plugged it in to her computer something came up in Turkish (she is presently in Turkey) that her friend said she should just close the window and she did. She shut down and switched over to the 10.5.2 install, repaired permissions, and then ran software update to go to 10.5.3. I believe her Boot Camp is updated to the most recent version on the PC side. After the update completed she went to go back into Windows and could not start up in it. It turned out somehow everything on the Boot Camp partition was gone. The partition name was the same as it had been previously and it shouls as all of the space available. None of the material was in the Trash on the Mac side and she had quite a build up in the Trash folder - so it wasn't put in the Trash and then the Trash emptied. It was as if someone had reformatted the partition.
I would chalk this up to user error when she was in disk utility maybe or someone in her studio screwing around with her computer but the same thing apparently happened to one of her classmates shortly before leaving for Turkey. Anyone heard of this happening or have any thoughts?
I had her saving all data to the Mac partition so luckily no data was lost - we just need to reinstall the programs to the Windows partition.

Nope, that didn't happen. The mbp has been loaded directly with Leopard since release day, and had few problems. I've done all the updates from 10.5.0 without any issues. But it was definitely something in the 10.5.3 update that hosed my video (or just a really, really strange coincidence and/or bad timing).
It's not just an OS driver, either. This is lower level than that, because I get NO video from a complete startup. There's no grey screen with the apple logo-- it stays completely blank. This almost surely means that the low-level firmware got corrupted or flashed incorrectly. The fact that the OS detects it as something completely different (Intel GMA X3100) supports this idea.
Thinking back, I did do the update with my laptop screen closed and using a 20" Apple Cinema Display, which is how I use the laptop 90% of the time. And in each of the previous updates, I'm certain they were installed similarly. I mention this, because someone else mentioned having the same issue as me, and noted that the update was done with an external display. Perhaps the firmware update is bugged so that if it doesn't detect the native display, it gets hosed...
I saw some other suggestions in another thread that sounded interesting. For instance, you can create a self booting CD on another Mac that reflashes the EFI (low level bios) to a factory setting. This could potentially fix it, and I would be willing to try it, if I still had my laptop.
In the future, just because things like this make me paranoid, I'll probably reboot the mbp and use only the native display before I do any updates...
