Boot Camp Questions, Bob Maher Help!

I have Boot Camp running on my MBP, I must say it was a very easy install, just took some time. The speed just knocks my socks off!
I do have some issues though, Bob Maher, need your help.
Does XP sleep on your MBP on its own or do you have to do it manually? I have to do it manually.
Does your Display brightness go to max when you boot into XP? Mine does.
Does your bluetooth connect to your Razr V3? Mine does but only via USB. Bluetooth sees it but does not allow Motorola Phone Tools to connect.
Any input would be appreciated!
William
PS: I can live with this at present but if you have ideas to remedy the issues I would like to know, thanks!

William:
I have read that "sleep" is a problem at the moment with running XP and that it is not a good idea to put it to sleep, by closing the lid, and putting it in it's case. It will get horribly hot, which chould permanently damage your battery.
The Display Brightness is controlled with a little icon on the Task Bar - it looks like a screen. If you set it mid way, and shut down and start back up - it remains that way - on mine anyway.
I have not attempted connecting Bluetooth to a phone (I have a Verizon Treo 650 - need to figure this out BTW), so I don't know. The blue tooth works fine on my BT keyboard.
Peter:
You have to run the network setup configurator in Network Places (join a netword something like that) for it to get "on line" - it works fine for me.
Some General Observations:
1) Download Tweakl UI from the PowerToys section of Microsoft and install it. It will allow you to set up all the settings correctly or to your taste...
2) I have zero heat issues running XP. Very odd. I ran some high end decompressions (using our companies software) and there was no change in heat. The unit is downright cool!
3) The volume is significantly louder. Maybe by 3X. I had real volume problems before the Firmware update, which solved the "general" issues, but I can't believe the difference in the XP side of things.
4) Whatever you do, if you go the Boot Camp route, make sure you leave about 5GB's of free space. You will need it. I can't swear to it, but I think the system is using more Swap File than it ever does on a native BIOS machine.
5) I have noticed, that when switching back to OS X, you really should shutdown completely, and not run a re-start. I find this to be true whether going from XP to Mac or Mac to XP. Don't know why, but I had some lockup issues.
6) Be sure to download all updates! Watch that security!
7) Use a Virus Protector and your Firewall. I happen to have an unlimited license of Norton Security (I know!) so I used that. But you may find that the "free" things are fine. I also know that the Windows Firewall meets HIPAA requirements (medical patient information) and so with that pass, it is fine for general use.
Direct Questions can be emailed to [email protected] which I check only once or twice a day, but I'd prefer that account be used. I'm averaging fifty emails a day based on this forum!

  • General Boot Camp Question

    Hello everyone.
I have this issue where I am trying to install Windows on my Mac but every time, after about 45 minutes or partitioning I get this message:
"Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
    I have 2 issues:
1)I don't know how to back up the disc and...
2)I don't have an extra hard drive to back it up to.
Here's the real kicker. It is already formatted as a "single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume" and here is the pic of my issue:
    http://img10.imageshack.us/i/picture1lf.png/
I have tried using Boot Camp once before and it worked just perfectly, but I had to back out in the middle of the process of installing Windows, but I reopened Boot Camp and erased that partition, so it should be perfect.
Thank you all for help. This has been driving me crazy. xD

  • Parallels vs. Boot Camp question

Is it possible once a Parallels VM has been setup, to run Bootcamp and have it recognize the Parallels partition? ie, do I need to reinstall all my Windows/Vista applications that I set up on the Parallels machine again in Boot Camp? Any help on how I can make this painless?

No, but Parallels can use your Boot Camp partition.

  • Boot Camp Question

    Hi,
I followed the Boot Camp Assistant instructions for installing Windows 8.1 on my iMac Retina 27" 5K OS X Yosemite.  Everything seemed to work as described.  I created an .iso image of Windows on a 64 GB USB 3.0 flash drive; created the partition and selected the Boot Camp partition and format.  Within a few it returned to the select partition screen and indicated it could not install Windows on said partition.  ( I do not recall exact wording of error.)  That was were I had to stop last night.
This morning, I checked Disk Utility and it shows the partition I created, as Untitled and it is the correct size and the Macintosh HD.  It also shows the flash drive with WININSTALL on it.  However, when I opened Boot Camp Assistant it took me to the Select Tasks window on which Remove Windows 7 or later version is the only option checked.  I have gone no further.
Is there a way to try to complete the Windows installation?  Have I missed something?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

You can try this. Power cycle you Mac and hold the Alt/Option Key. If your USB installer was created correctly, you should see two options, Windows and EFI Boot. Try Windows first (which uses the legacy BIOS/MBR method). If you get an error for inappropriate partitioning mismatch (GPT vs MBR), repeat and choose EFI Boot.
BCA is expected to allow an EFI installation on UEFI-compliant machines, but seems to behave inconsistently.

  • Boot Camp Windows 7 download help?

So i just used boot camp to download windows 7 onto my macbook air, and everything worked out fine… or so i thought. The windows 7 runs smoothly and everything, and the reason I wanted Windows on my mac is so that I could play online games which like 90% of them don't work on mac… So i go to download a game I have been wanting to play, and it says I need to download adobe flash first. So when I go to download adobe flash, it says there is an error, and that I have no available disk space in the C drive !!(i am pretty sure it was the c drive)... so ***?!?! I just gave 20 GB to windows 7 and it says i have NO AVAILABLE DISK SPACE?!! I am so confused… so please help…. why after i just partitioned 20 GB to windows 7 on my mac computer does it say that there is no available disk space?

20gb way too small, if you're going to game you should give windows at least 60gb
also disable hibernation and the page file (google) on your air after getting windows installed

  • VM Fusion and Parallels and even a Boot Camp question

I have both Fusion and Parallels installed and have a question about how Windows is displayed .
with Parallels, I get the usual Windows desktop and with Fusion I get a "menu" for navagating to different areas/programs/settings
What can I do to get Fusion to display the Windows desktop as Parallels does? I haven't used either enough to know which I prefer, but I can tell you one thing, I immediately disabled the internet connection for both. There is NO WAY I would ever connect to the 'net in Windows.
I actually think that after I get Leopard I will try installing Boot Camp just for comparisons sake. I will have to "slipstream" a disk with XP to include SP2, but the directions are pretty clear, if I read them really slowly.
I'd really like to hear from someone who has successfully "slipstreamed" a disk.
    thanks

Sounds like you were using Fusion's Coherence mode to launch individual applications which some people prefer. But you should have first had Windows desktop.

  • I have os x 10.6.6 and I need to remove a partition from boot camp and I no longer have a boot camp assistant...HELP!!!

HELP!     You've heard of builders who never get their house finished?  Well, I have a husband who could do this and a friend of my husband's who can also but they REFUSE to help me or at least keep forgetting (conveniently).  I'm at wits end and am contemplating taking it to the shop.  UGH!!   I no longer have a boot camp assistant (I tried to do this before last year and gave up and bought a pc as my work programs wouldn't work with Mac.)  What can I do?
    Thank you!!!!!

Niels approach to get the BootCamp Assistant back is recommended because usually the correct way to remove your Windows partition is to use the BootCamp Assistant again which should give you the option to remove the made Windows partition and revert back to one OSX volume.
After that's done a reboot of your Mac might be advisable.
Only if that's not working (whatever the reason) :
    1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
    2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
    3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
    4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
    5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
    6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
    7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
    After that's done successfully
    8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
    9) Quit Disk Utility
    10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.

  • 2 Boot Camp Questions

    Good Evening Folks,
Two quick questions for a newbie to both mac and the boot camp program.
    1) I am using a apple brand external modem for my dial-up connection (Yes, I know I am still in the stone age). When I use XP in boot camp it of course does not recognize the modem. Any ideas on what I could do or if there is a way to have it recognize the modem? Without the modem I have no way to get online when using xp.
    2) I know that you can transfer files very easily from mac to xp via the drive on your desktop. What about when you are in windows mode. How would I access something on the mac side or say put a picture or song on the mac side?
Any and all advise is very much appreciated.
    Thanks all,
    John

I'm writing you, from XP side, using external USB Dial up, the maker is Best data, model # 56USBP , it's a Data AND Faqx modem, and works/made for both Mac and PC's. ($45.00)
There are 3 makers I found, that make a model made for both Mac's and PC's, and comes with the software for both OS's . One important item, the model for PC's must be for Win..ws XP WITH service pack 2, if it's just xp, it may not work. Besides Best data model above, Zoom modem makes 1, and also a model from Diamond, a Diamond Supra ----# I forget. In my case, I called Best data, (who say they now own/merged w/ DiamonD) , they had to send me, (email or regular mail, I chose em) a newer driver, for it to work w/ XPP Serv pack 2. In closing, I tried burning the new drivers on my iMac side, (I couldn't get online on the PC/Win..ws side). The iMac burned disc, WOULD NOT work on the Win..s side, I went to a local copy store, (Kinko's), and burned the email w/ drivers from a PC, on getting home it now worked, thus, burn a pc drviver from a pc, to a pc, If I find the exact model #'s of the other 2, Zoom and Diamond, I'll repost, but the above works. G'luck

  • Another Boot Camp question

Sorry-when installing boot camp on my 17" macbook pro, the windows installation screen 'stalls' at the 'Welcome to setup' screen. I am supposed to hit the 'enter' key to continue, but at this point my keyboard becomes inoperable. (no key seems to function at this point) I have to hard re-boot to get anywhere, and of course windows does not install. Any advice?
    Thank you,
    JTH

This is usually due to a bad copy of WinXP installation disc.
You might want to confirm this by using an external USB keyboard, I am not sure if this will help but on desktop Apple computer such as mini and Mac Pro, USB keyboard is recognized.
Even a USB keypad might work, the enter key on the keypad should serve the same as a full size keyboard.

  • Several Boot Camp Questions

I want to install Windows for games on my late 2012 iMac
    1) Do I have to get any special versions?  Will OEM versions work?  I can only seem to find OEM versions of Windows 7 on Amazon.
    2) For gaming should I get Windows 7 or Windows 8.1
    3) Will I have any problems with my bluetooth keyboard? (I have a USB gaming mouse)
    4) Is there any place I can purchase a downloadable copy of Windows?  I can't seem to find any.
A peripheral question: I'm going to be using XPlane flight simulator which is available for Windows and Mac.  Is there any reason to pick one OS over the other for an application like that?

OEM is fine, all you need is the key ... for the w7 ISO, go here
    http://techverse.net/download-windows-7-iso-x86-x64-microsofts-official-servers/
for gaming, 7 or 8.1 both are fine. if same price, go 8.1, why not ... note, though, you'll need to buy a 8.1 DVD as you cannot consistently find these ISOs online
if the BT kb is already paired in OSX before you start boot camp assistant, it *should* be fine but would not hurt to have a wired kb and mouse handy

  • Boot Camp and Win XP help

  • Quick OS X fresh install boot camp question (MP 2006 1,1)

i have a pair of drives in my 2006 1,1 mac pro with one containing a partition of mountain lion (as i recall) along with a boot camp partition of windows XP and the second hard drive containing a CLONE of the mountain lion partition along with a boot camp partition of windows 7.
can i do a fresh RE-INSTALL of mountain lion on the OS X partition and basically keep the two boot camp partitions intact and in use on this 2006 machine?

Not to steal The hatter 's thunder, but what is being suggested is that a MP disk which does not have OS X and is less than 2TB in size can be formatted as MBR-only disk when XP is installed, which Windows understands, and you do not have to deal with the vagaries of a hybrid MBR. Otherwise you deal with a GPT/MBR combination. Resizing partitions on the MBR-only disk is also allowed without having to manipulate the hybrid MBR.
A GPT/MBR combination disk can also be converted to a MBR-only disk via GPT Fdisk, provided you do not have anything else (like OS X) which needs a GPT to function. If you need steps, let me know.
The MP 1,1 can be a pure Windows machine, if the WXP is on a standalone MBR only disk, if you leave the XP only disk in the MP. If it has a Hybrid MBR, you have to use Alt/Option, if necessary, to boot into Windows. Since the OS X disk has been removed,

  • Boot Camp 2.1 upgrade HELP!

I have been trying to update my Boot Camp to 2.1, and I have experienced the issue in the following support article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1845
The article suggest that I do the following.
In Windows, start a command prompt (cmd.exe, sometimes referred to as a command shell). Use Administrative rights if running Windows Vista.
Type one the following command lines in the command shell:
For Windows XP, type: msiexec /update <path to the .msp file>\BCUpdateXP.msp
Can someone give me a dummies guide to how this can be done?
    How do I launch "cmd.exe"?
What is <path to the .msp file>?
    Thank you!

For anyone interested in the answer to this issue, I have summarized a quick fix.
    1)
“Cmd.exe” can be accessed via the “Start” menu and “Accessories” in Windows XP.
    2)
To get the “path to file”, simply drag the icon of the update into cmd.exe, and the path will be shown in its proper command sequence.
