Boot Camp - Reinstall of OSX Assistance Required

Greetings all,
I have had problems with partitioning my harddrive with Boot Camp - errors reading "Unable to partition disk due to unmovable files, backup your disk and reformat as..." or something along those lines.
I bought iDefrag, cleared out my temp files, and am still getting the same message, so I believe an OSX reinstall is in order.
If anyone thinks I should try anything else before doing so, please let me know!
After a lot of painstaking file transferring I am currently using my external hard drive & Time Machine to back up my stuff. I have never used Time Machine before so fingers are tightly crossed it works.
So, I have a couple of questions.
1) I had to turn my External HDD into a Time Machine only storage device. Is it possible, after I have everything reinstalled and functional with all my data reinstated to convert it back to just a storage device?
2) What I want to do is:
Back everything up with Time Machine.
Reinstall OSX
Partition the Harddrive with Boot Camp to give 32GB to Windows, install Windows etc.
Use my Time Machine backup to reinstate all of my stuff back onto OSX.
This might sound really stupid, but will running my Time Machine backup (created prior to installing Windows) AFTER installing Windows, revert back to a computer without Windows? (My computer, at the point where it was backed up, has 46GB remaining and I want to partition 32GB to Windows.)
Thanks in advance for your help.
Nicola

What you want to do is not only possible, but I've actually done it myself. There's a slim chance that the tedium of the whole process could be avoided.
iDefrag, like a lot of other defragmentation utilities, has several different methods for getting the job done. They can defragment files, consolidate free space, or do both at once. It naturally follows, then, that you want to consolidate free space. As I don't use iDefrag, I can't explain how to do that.
If you create a working system and then slice out your Boot Camp partition, Time Machine will be able to work with what's left. But, you should check to make sure that all your apps are working as before; I have had to re-install bits of software that actually broke post-restore (e.g. Absolute's LoJack for Laptops anti-theft tracker).
Good luck,
Nate

• Is Boot Camp 4.0 (OSX Lion) compatible with a 2006 iMac?

Just made a clean install of OSX Lion and am trying to install Windows XP using Boot Camp. When I try to download Windows Support Software I get, "Can't install Windows Support Software because it is not currently available from the Software Update".
Is Boot Camp 4.0 not compatible with my 2006 (White) iMac? If not, can I install an older version of Boot Camp, is there another workaround or do I have to return to Snow Leopard?

Lion's Boot Camp Assistant will download Boot Camp 4, which does not support Windows XP.
Assuming your Mac came with Leopard, you will instead use the Boot Camp drivers from the disk that came with your Mac. Partition your disk using the Boot Camp Assistant or whatever partitioning utility you want. Insert the Windows disk and reboot while holding down the Option key, then select the Windows disk. Install Windows XP as normal. When Windows install is finished, insert the OSX disk that came with your Mac and install the Boot Camp drivers.

• Boot camp XP, does OSX CD install all drivers?

When i load the boot camp drivers off the OSX CD after first booting into windows, does that take care of everything? or should i go out and download updated chipset, wireless nic, etc drivers from somewhere to get the most current?

Hi,
the BootCamp Drivers on the OSX disc should have everything you need.
However, depending on the version (and oldness) of your OSX DVD you might wanna run the "Apple Software Update" utility while in Windows after installing the drivers from the OSX DVD.
There could be minor updates available.

• How to fix time changing in boot camp to mac osx

After I installed Windows 7 Ultimate with boot camp on my 2011 Macbook Pro I installed the drivers from the disc and installed all the updates from software update in windows 7.
Whenever I restart into Mac OSX 10.6.8 it will change the date to the next day (or about 11 hours) and even if the automatic time set from the internet is selected it will still say this is the correct time
So i change it manually and keep it this way. But then again whenever I restart into W7 it will change back to a different time
I have had a look at this forum but with the last suggestion on the page but there was no file specified to delete
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2253940?threadID=2253940&tstart=0
Thanks and I hope i can get this fixed in a couple of days!
I might have to go into the apple genius bar if i cannot get it fixed online

As you've learned the hard way, if you were expecting an instant answer to a problem or technical question, you won't often find it here unless many other people are encountering the issue at the same moment on the same day. If no-one currently online when you post your message has encountered your specific issue or problem and been able to remedy it, you're unlikely to get an immediate response.
In the less-active areas of these forums, questions often linger 24 hours or more before receiving a response, and many questions go unanswered far longer. That is because these are free user-to-user forums, not a paid tech support help line.
And yet, some wonderful people spend an extraordinary amount of time here being helpful: Take a look at the list of Top Participants in any Community. It is based upon reputation points. It takes decades of determined effort to achieve a 'Level 10' status!
I've been a casual user here for almost four years, and I'm barely a 'Level 3' which begins at 500 reputation points, equating to as few as 50 'correct' or as many as 100 'helpful' answers, so take any advice I've posted within these forums at your own risk.
Not being one to assume that any totally frustrated user actually searches far and wide within or outside these forums for answers, or even understands how to use the forum search feature before getting frustrated, I'll offer some links that could still be helpful...
The Boot Camp time sync issue goes back to at least 2007-2008, which predates both OS X 10.6 and Windows 7. A popular search engine will provide quite a number of off-forum links that may or may not be helpful.
This old link within Apple Support Communities provides a couple of off-site Microsoft links to instructions for setting the system clock and synchronizing with an internet time server. It does not specifically address OS X 10.6 and Windows 7, but OS X 10.5, Windows XP and Windows Vista: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1285
Note that you must have an active internet connection for time-sync to work properly.
Have you set up your network connection(s) on the Windows 7 side?
Which time zone have you selected on the Windows side?
Which internet time server(s) are you using on OS X and in Windows?
This off-site post suggests using regedit in Windows to disable the Apple Time Service in Windows.
http://highball.se/2011/02/fix-bootcamp-system-time-issues/
and it references the original 2007 post here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=314786
May that future responses to your questions within the Apple Support Communities be, uh, somewhat more timely.

• Boot Camp Partitioning Error - OSX 10.6.6

Hey I previously created a partition of 20GB on my MBP's HD and installed a copy of Windows Vista on it. The installation went well, but I soon realised that the 5GB free space that was left wasn't enough to suit my needs. I then deleted the partition with the intention of creating a new, bigger partition.
However, when I attempted to create a new, 50GB partition, an error stating that "files cannot be moved" occurred. It also suggested that I backup my Mac and reinstall OSX. I don't yet have a Time Capsule, and I don't feel comfortable reinstalling OSX until I do. I have tried deleting all large files (over 2GB), Defragmenting the HD (With iDefrag), and even reverting to creating a 20GB partition, but the error still occurs.
Is there anything I can do until I can afford a Time Capsule? Thanks

Since the partition must be continuous, the error message 'files cannot be moved' indicates that the system is having trouble finding contiguous space for the new partition. You will probably have to reformat the disk in order to get around this problem.
If you decide to reformat the disk, remember that will destroy all data on the disk so backup first.

I have a quick question regarding the Mac OS X/Windows XP setup. I have both installed on my computer, but I am having problems with my Mac OS X side, and want to reinstall the OS. Would it affect my Windows side of the hard drive? Or will reinstalling Mac OS X wipe out my whole HD?

If I do an Erase and Install for my Mac OS X will it affect my Windows XP software?? Thats the question I'm having, I did the Archive and Install - didn't fix the issue.

• Boot Camp "No Bootable Device" after OSX Partition Resize

I have a MacBook Mid/Late 2007. I started out with a 500GB drive that I partitioned 100GB for Windows 8 in Boot Camp (yes, I know only 7 is officially supported, not the point as it worked fine.) I wanted to try Mavericks so I resized my OSX partition down 100GB to make a new 100GB Mavericks partition. After I installed it and played around, I noticed when I booted with the option key, my Boot Camp partition was missing. I thought i was becaus eI had too many partitions, so I deleted Mavericks and resized my main OSX back to where it was when I started. The Boot Camp partition still won't show up when I hold option on boot, but when I run Boot Camp manager on OSX it wants to remove it, so it knows it's there. It also shows up in the startup disks pane, but if I select it and reboot, I get a "No Bootable Device -- insert boot disk and press any key" message. If there a way to bring back Windows?
Here's the kicker: My optical drive DOES NOT work. I installed Windows 7 off DVD long ago before it quit working and the only way I got Windows 8 on was through a downloaded upgrade. I know I should get it fixed, but I don't have the money (and I never use it, and this is 2 that have died on me in this laptop.) My system can't boot anything other than OSX off flash drives or external DVD drives (I tried, and I tried reEFIt, neither worked.) So I need a solution that doens't require a boot CD if at all possible.

Nhammake wrote:
I can get to and boot OSX (it's what I'm using now as this is my only laptop), I just can't boot Windows. All my files show up fine on both partitions.
You can't add/remove or alter the partitions if Boot Camp is installed, Windows will cease to boot.
To fix it, erase all paritions except OSX. Start over, 2 partitions only (OSX and Boot Camp)

• Mac OS erase and reinstall and Boot Camp

Greetings,
I am totally confused. I need to wipe my OS side and I am unsure how this will affect my windows boot camp. One complication is that I do not have my boot camp CD with me nor will I be able to get it any time soon. SO, if I wipe my Mac OS, then I assume I will lose my Boot Camp assistant...but will that make it impossible to access my windows partition? Since I am pretty sure I should wipe my Mac OS and start new, should I first clear the partition and then wipe the whole disk? Then, when I can get my boot camp again, reinstall the partition? Or, can I just wipe my Mac OS and be OK to enter the windows despite not having the boot camp to reinstall?
Help! I have no clue what to do here!
Thanks,
PS: I am using 10.4 Tiger

Confused:
What pray tell do you plan to use to wipe with?
What is a Boot Camp CD?
BC Assistant does one thing only, partition for install of Windows, period.
If you wipe the whole disk, clear (Windows) partition (with OS X utility Boot Camp Assistant) is just extra unnecessary.
Without an umbrella, it always rains, with it, maybe not (ie, backup both beforehand). There is always a change of something going wrong.
Your OS X DVD is all you need to install Mac OS, any Boot Camp drivers, and even includes BC Assistant.

• Osx disappeared after partition shrink in boot camp

i made a partition shrink in boot camp after that osx disappeared .i can see only win 7 " become corrupted copy " so i can not log into windows too..????!!
"" i am a beginner ""

I could solve it by calling Apple Care.
The solution:
Turn off the machine.
Unplug any device except for a wired keyboard and a mouse. Note: My Logitech G150s Gaming Keyboard didn't work so I had to use an older Logitech diNovo Wireless Keyboard, which worked for me.
Start the machine again and let it boot into Internet Recovery by holding [CMD] + [ALT] + [R] until you see a spinning globe. Depending on your Internet speed it will take some time (I have a 10Mbit/s connection and it took about 10 minutes).
The system now starts the recovery mode. Check the Disk Utility to check your partitions. Afterwards choose "Install" and select a compatible partition to install OS X on. If you have a USB thumb drive, choose the Apple menu, select "Choose Start Volume" (or simular) and select your thumb drive to boot from it.

• More boot camp problems new 5k imac 3 tera fusion drive

there seems to be problems with Yosemite and boot camp assistant
i'm cross posting this to the iMac forum but I spent hours online with apple tech today and none of the several foks I talked to there had even seen a 5k 27" yet and my call back from Cupertino and engineering is no till tomorrow so I thought I should post here too
MMy bto 5k shipped from China sunday night and arrived in Maine this morning.... Amazing when you think about it for a bto
iinstallation and set up we're going fine and I started up boot camp assistant to create a temp boot camp while I wait for my thunder bay 4 box to take the drives for my old Mac pro when boot camp will have a1 tera SSD all to itself....
so carved off a 700 gig boot camp partition which the assistant formatted fat I then plugged is the lighting to FW adapter in a LaCie 2 tera fw 800 drive to act as a bridge to my LaCie DVD burner which uses the old fw400 cables and inserted my new shrink wrap win 8.1 retail 64 DVD and up comes the win 8 install in very tiny type in a tiny window which got a bit of a laugh out of me.
And I go through it to the point of selecting that boot camp partition and then said it could not use a fat partition and I should reformat it from the win 8.1 installer which I did and then it said it could not use and unknown partition so I said great and booted back to 10-10 and the boot camp tool to put things back and it said it could not I then went to disk tools and it also said the 3tera fusion could not be either reformatted or put back to a single partition I was on with tech support where I went up through 4 levels of support due to the 5k bto which most had no knowledge of. We tried the optioncommand r to get to DT and the same problem as did going to reinstall from the net which after a 30 min down load could not reformat either it is now kicked to Cupertino with a call back tomorrow
( At this point all I want to do is put the computer back in the condition it was in when i started with a plain Yosemite on an unpartitioned 3 tera fusion... Then deal with boot camp when it can have its own drive)
am betting it will take a Unix comand line to reformat but be aware there may be boot camp issues with my configuration
and any help here will be great fully received

• Win7 boot camp 2.1

In 2008 I bought this iMac and installed windows vista (osx 10.5.4; boot camp 2.1). During 2009 I updated to osx 10.6.4 and win7. win7 is always used with fusion, due to problems when booted directly. When booted directly vista (but not win7) required a new activation. After the last session with win7 (first try after month) I had to use time-capsule to reinstall osx (so this was quite an embarrassing experience).
Although win7 (32 bit) is running, I would like to use the latest drivers and would prefer to use boot camp 3.1 instead of the old version 2.1. But there is now way to get past the error code 2229 during every attempt. I can't deinstall 2.1 or can update to 2.2 or 3.0. Boot camp 3.1 (32 bit) requires 3.0 -- and so on.
Changing the compatibility mode for the .exe to vista does not change the error code.
What means 2229 and how can I install boot camp 3.1.
Thank you in advance

• Cannot read partition created by Boot Camp in Disk Utility

Ok, so in trying to get a larger Boot Camp drive, I used disk utility to make a back up og my previous drive onto USB, and then removed the Boot Camp drive from OSX. This afternoon, I tried using Boot Camp Assistant to create a new partition to install windows onto, hoping to restore from the disk image on the USB drive.
HOWEVER, when restarting the computer when Boot Camp Asst. told me to, and it booted to WInXP sp2 disk, I can see 3 partitions on my drive. 1 partition being most of the 160g drive, 2nd partition being 116g of the mac drive, and the 35g of the 3rd partition (what I asked Boot camp to make) However, it doesn't say boot camp partition. I cannot install XP onto any of the partitions I see in the startup disk.
After spending nearly two hours on the phone with a very nice and helpful tech rep from Apple, my cell phone died, leaving us knowing that there is more space reportedly being used on my Mac HD than i have folders using space (only using about 73gigs of space before any of this partition work, now reports using 116 GB). I went back into the XP disk and deleted the 3rd partition, and now there is no gain in space on my Mac HD. We're re-verified and repaired disk permissions, and used the Leopard disk to repair the disk itself. Restored from Time Machine, and still no regained HD space.
Essentially I'm missing 35G of hard drive space now, and I can't install Windows.
I can only see the Mac HD partition on my hard drive. Anyone have a suggestion?!?!

Reinstall Leopard, but first use the Leopard install DVD Disk Utility to reformat the HD to one partition. See:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh14.html
It's for Tiger, but applies for Leopard as well.

• How to install Windows 7 on MacBook with Tiger + Leopard upgrade using Boot Camp

Hi,
I've had Vista installed on a separate partition on my MacBook for a while, but wanted to upgrade to Windows 7. I've completely wiped the HDD, re-installed Tiger, upgraded to Leopard and installed Windows 7 using boot camp from within OSX. However, I now can't boot back into OSX - I believe it's because I don't have the latest version of Boot Camp within Windows 7 (it doesn't appear on the task bar), but I also don't have a full copy of Leopard, only the upgrade disk.
Is there any way to (a) boot back into OSX (I've tried holding down the option key and this doesn't work) and (b) installing a version of Boot Camp that will enable me to switch between both operating systems as I was when Vista was installed & without having to purchase the full copy of Leopard?
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Elliot.

Try to boot from the 10.4 disk then and "Repair Disk". If you can, then try booting from the 10.5 disk and do the same.
Have you tried holding down the C key also when trying to boot from the Install disks? It could take 30 seconds to a minute or more for the C key/Option key reboots. The Mac DVD HAS to be the OS installer disk not the applications installer, etc,. Sorry if I keep bringing this up.
You have to keep holding it down the whole time it boots, either it will bypass it and reboot into Windows or it should get to the boot loader window with at least Windows showing up.
If you can still boot into Windows with no problems then Windows SHOULD show up in the boot loader window. (C key/Option key) It's hardware related, it's the computers manual way of looking for a bootable OS if there's no OS installed yet.
Don't forget to disconnect any USB devices until you get it fixed.
Also try to boot from the Windows installer disk and "Repair Windows" and see what happens.
Other then your DVD drive may be on it's last legs, I can't really think of any reason you can't boot from the Mac DVD's. All the other post's I searched for eventually got the DVD boot working, even 10.6 and 10.7 are having that issue, tho rarely.

Hi, ...........inserting the Leopard disk once in Windows to install boot camp and it says that the version on the DVD is only compatible with XP SP2 or Vista.................
Don't run the installer this time, if a window pops up to "Run" or "Open", just open it. If it doesn't open the DVD and look for the BootCamp.exe. Right click on the .exe (or whatever it's called) and select the trouble shoot compatibility mode and select Vista. Yes, I know you have W7. See if that works.
It may have buggered the Mac OS side so you may have to get DiskWarrior (worked for some) or the like in order to fix it. It would definitely be useful in the future.

I stupidly made the mistake of adding a new partition out of the large amount of free space I have on the OSX partition, to format the new partition for Windows. This made Boot Camp no longer boot. On the Disk select screen after holding Option on boot, my Boot Camp partition is not visible. I can see everything on the partition on OSX, however.
To try and fix this, I deleted the new partition and tried to reduce the hard drive back to the original two partitions. However, I cannot extend the OSX partition to fill in the new free space. So now I have a Boot Camp partition, my OSX partition, and 20GB of unused, free space that I cannot use or put back into the original partition.
I asked AppleCare live chat for any assistance, they suggested that I use "Erase free space" in Disk Utility to use the space again. However, the option is greyed out on both the drive and the Macintosh HD partition.
After a bit of googling I saw a suggestion of making a USB Recovery drive to get the space back through Disk Utility that way. This still did not work; the results were the same, unable to add the space back to the original partition, and "Erase free space" is still greyed out.
Using BootChamp (notice the H, this is an app that allows you to restart and boot directly into Boot Camp through OSX), I get a DOS screen saying "No bootable device – insert boot disk and press any key". I cannot get this screen any other way.
I have repaired and verified the disk and its permissions, to no avail.
I cannot think of anything else to do short of formatting the entire drive but this is obviously less than preferable. I additionally do not have a backup of the BootCamp partition (as it is not accessible), even though everything is visible on the partition through OSX.
So, in summary, I added a new partition to my HD and now Boot Camp will not boot. Any ideas?

"rEFIt is an alternative bootloader for your Mac that's a lot more forgiving. If you don't think investing in iPartition is worth it, I'd give this a shot:
In rEFIt, do not boot: go to the EFI shell, and type "gptsync". This will tell you that the partition table is out of sync, and will offer to sync it for you. Say "yes", naturally. Now reboot and all systems should be go!"
This worked.

Your OSX psrtition and your Boot Camp partition are completely separate. You can reinstall Mavericks without affecting Boot Camp and you can redo Boot Camp without affacting OSX.
