Boot Camp & RIAD on a Mac Pro

I am trying to install Boot Camp on a Mac Pro with four 500GB hds in two striped raids one as a time machine backup for the other. As soon as I hit continue to start the Boot camp installation assistant I get a warning that says "You cannot partition an external disk drive. Restart your computer using your computer's internal startup disk." But I am using my internal startup disk. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

When I went to install boot camp...I got that also.
My conclusion is that Boot Camp will not install on a RAID subsystem. This is highly likely due to the fact that you need a clean "partition" to install boot camp and it doesn't expect to have to get Windows to work with the RAID system (although I don't see why it wouldn't).
So, if you are RAIDed, you are out of luck.
Go get Parallels. You will love it. Coherence mode is amazing.
If you want to play games...well, keep away from FPS games or high speed graphics...then Parallels will do just fine. (It might even do OK in full screen mode). I don't play games, so I don't have experience with them in Parallels. Ask around.
I use Parallels every day to run Flare and Groove (Windows XP). (and Windows Vista which will not run Flare or Groove without....problems..., and Ubunto, and RedHat Linux 4, and RedHat Linux 5, and openSUSE, and SUSE Enterprise Linux 10...though not necessarily all at the same time!)

AMD Crossfire, Boot Camp, and the new Mac Pro Issue

I have a new Mac Pro (Late 2013) with 6 cores, 32 GB RAM, and dual D700 AMD graphics cards. I'm using an older 30 inch Apple Cinema Display (with the dual link DVI adapter). I've successfully installed Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp. Here's my problem...
I understand that for the new Mac Pro under Boot Camp enables AMD CrossfireX by default from multiple sources online. However, it's disabled on mine, and every time I try to enable it (and hit "Apply" in the AMD Control Center), it disables again.
Is Crossfire only available for use with a Thunderbolt Display attached? Could that be the problem? Or is the AMD Control Panel lying to me?
Now, games in Windows are still running well... But I'd like to take full advantage of the dual graphics cards in the new Mac Pro with Crossfire. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Fixed it!
So, not only would Crossfire not enable under Windows 8.1 on my Mac Pro in Boot Camp... But Windows started crashing massively. I was about to wipe Boot Camp entirely and try a clean install (even though the only three things I'd installed were Windows itself using Apple's exact instructions, Steam, and Skyrim), but decided in a last ditch effort to try disconnecting and reconnecting peripherals.
Turns out the culprit was my Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock.
Disconnecting the Belkin Thunderbolt dock not only stopped Windows from crashing, but now I can enable Crossfire, as well!
Now, this is especially strange since I have read elsewhere that people have no problems using the Belkin dock under Boot Camp with other Macs... This issue is probably isolated to using it in Boot Camp with the new Mac Pro. But disconnecting the dock from my Mac Pro has solved not just one but all of my Boot Camp issues. (Of course, using the Belkin dock under OSX on my Mac Pro is no problem.)
Long story short, if you have a new Mac Pro and plan on using Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp, don't have the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock attached.
I'm going to contact Belkin and tell them what I've discovered.

Is there a way to install boot camp on a 2006 Mac Pro running Lion?

Lion comes with Boot Camp 4, which supports Windows 7+. The 2006 Mac Pro however only supports Windows Vista, which requires Boot Camp 3.
I can't find a download link for Boot Camp 3, only 4 and 5.
Does anyone have an idea?

When do Boot Camp updates come? Mac Pro SATA issue driving me NUTS

I just got a Mac Pro, FINALLY, and after a long wait, I've had to suffer through hours of shoving Windows XP on my Mac Pro with Boot Camp 1.1. After successfully getting it all put on there, the stupid SATA issues are driving me nuts. I tried the slipstreaming fix TWICE, and I have no patience to try it a third.
Basically, I know 1.1 just came out, but do we know when the next update will come that will supposedly fix the SATA issues? How often do updates come for this so we can have a basic window of when the update will come?

I disagree… in this case at least. Apple has stated that Boot Camp is a feature of Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard and to not have it work correctly, or to its potential, on their flagship product, the Mac Pro, as it were intended then this makes it unacceptable. For Apple's customers and for Apple themselves.
Apple IS ultimately responsible for having this work out of the box and with standard off the shelf product, which includes the minimum Windoews product (Microsoft Windows XP SP2 at this time).
Bear in mind that Boot Camp is still in beta so demanding a fix is a little difficult and the the part that I feel is unfair to Apple. While I have stated previously (in another thread) that Apple will fix this issue… they can't not, it appears the reality may be a little more difficult. It is possible that upon the release of Leopard the minimum system requirements on the Mac Pro will be Windows Vista.
What I find a little odd though is that there are no SATA issues on the rest of the Mac product line.

Completely unable to boot camp windows 7 on Mac Pro

I am at the end of my rope. I have a Mac Pro 1,1 - 2.66 quad core, 7 gigs of ram. I have been trying over and over and over to Boot Camp Windows 7 onto a secondary hard drive. But every single time time, it hangs indefinitely or straight up freezes during "completing installation". I have scoured the interent for answers. I have tried typing shift+f10 when it hangs and typing in explorer.exe. This doesn't work. I have tried having all USB devices unplugged. I have moved the drive from bay 2 to bay 1 and having the other 2 drives empty. I have tried multiple discs. And from what I have found, the Mac Pro is completely unable to boot from a USB drive with the Windows 7 installer on it. WHAT DO I DO? Please help!

your mac pro like mine has older EFI firmware that does not support booting Windows 7 64-bit.
You will have to remove all other drives.
Before you do, reformat the drive you want ot use as Windows Master Boot Record and FAT32, then format the drive with Windows during install.
Get rid of whatever is on the drive now.
You will be limited to 1.9GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium supports just one cpu, you have two.
64-bit Windows requires UEFI which you don't have and would need to edit and modify the DVD (reburn after using Imgburn).
Easy method: do basic install on a PC and then put the drive in the Mac Pro.

Can't create boot camp partition on new macbook pro

Hi all. Having an odd issue installing boot camp on my 2011 Macbook Pro. When I try and create a partition it gives me the following error message:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved."
It goes on to tell me that I need to reformat my drive and try again. Seems a little extreme and even worse, I'm wondering if this will work considering that I still have over 600GB of free space available on my drive. Thought I'd post here and see if anyone has had a similar issue before harassing support.

If you look at the pdf guide in Boot Camp Assistant, step one is to backup. Common sense before altering, installing new OS, and should be required of anyone even if just updating Mac OS.
Now, having fragmented space: Apple never considers defragging free space and says Mac OS X defrags some files, and that having more than 25% free should not impact Mac OS performance.
So I think that covers Apple support for their own OS.
When you install updates, applications and such, the patches are compressed, expanded, space is fragmented, and some vendors often choose to write their updates to the far end of the drive in order to leave high access for other portions.
the best and perhaps only way to move files is to boot from another hard drive, rather than pick yourself up by your own bootstraps and try to shuffle files.
I would never recommend using only built in tools. I don't advise Apple DU First Aid as the sole utility for maintenance and repairs for Mac HFS file system. nor would I use TimeMachine alone. They are free and there and better than nothing.
Create a bootable backup clone of Mac OS for one.
Repair your internal drive.
Try using Boot Camp Assistant; or iDefrag; or Paragon CampTune (yes, it can be used to install Windows partition as well as resize partitions now or later if needed). Does a better job.
The use of x86 Intel cpus opened up new possibilities. Some unintended or not foreseen I guess too. A competition challenge to see who could install Windows on a Mac first and easiest took place in 2006. Apple came in later with their beta. but Boot Camp Assistant has always been a weak, lame, partitioning tool.
Macs and users using gparted and other tools? and try to stop the hand-holding concept? unlikely.
A better tool? there should be, and not only that, it really needs to just be rolled into Disk utilty as one more feature and tab along with other tools - so integrated and if you want to create, resize, remove an MBR slice and Windows partition, you can.
Paragon lets you create a partition, and also they have their own NTFS driver so you don't need to format BOOTCAMP (MSDOS/FAT32) during the install phase later.
Of course installing Windows in a VM doesn't have all the trouble of dual boot native install and given RAM and processor resources, can be more than functional enough for many.
With Windows 7 you can install and have a Windows-only computer, remove all traces of Mac OS (and boot OS X off 2nd drive, either with two SSD + hard drive or eSATA or Intel 'Bolt' interface as well as FW800.

Cannot boot from Superdrives on my Mac Pro!!

Hello,
So I tried to boot last night from my Disk Warrior CD in order to do a maintenance check.
I hold C key but in vain after a couple of minutes I get the black screen/freeze with the message to restart holding power button.
Today, I tried to install Leopard on my external firewire drive and when the Mac restarted I got the same result.......freeze.
I tried both Superdrives.......same result, verified connections etc..... no dice.
I run the latest Leopard 10.5.3 in a first edition Mac Pro Dual 2.66 with 13GB RAM and 3 hard drives.
What bugs me is the fact that while holding or not the C key, after a couple of minuted I hear the ''click'' that you hear when you shut down the Mac Pro. It is like the Mac is shutting off but still runs for a few minutes before giving me the black screen.
This means I cannot boot anything anymore on my Mac Pro.
Please help me, any deas, what should I try doing.
The 2 Superdrives are Pioneer 111D and 112D......one is master the other on cable select.

First things First. Follow Theses Steps ...
Step 1) Can you boot from the hard drive with both 'Superdrives' plug in and empty?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 2) Check the 'Superdrives' from the 'System Profiler' -> 'Hardware' -> 'ATA Bus'. Does it list BOTH Drives?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 3) Is the TOP drive 'Unit Number: 0' (Zero) and the BOTTOM drive 'Unit Number: 1'.

Step 8) Open case and remove the 'Superdrive' bay. The 'Original' drive should be in the TOP bay with the END OF the 'Ribbon' cable plugged in to it. This 'Ribbon' cable and the 'Superdrive' should have a 'NOTCH' and can ONLY be plugged in a certain way. Set the 'Drive Select' jumper to 'Master'. Unplug the 'Ribbon' and 'Power' cable from the 'BOTTOM Superdrive'.
Step 9) Repeat Steps 1 thru 5 and if you make it to Step 6, Repeat Step 8 using the 'BOTTOM Superdrive'.
Step 10) Hmm, both 'Superdrives' WORK by themselves but NOT together So connect the TOP drive back as in Step 8 and connect the BOTTOM drive but change the BOTTOM drive's 'Jumper' to 'Slave'. Leave the TOP drive set to 'Master'.
Step 11) Repeat Steps 1 thru 5 and if you DO NOT make it to Step 6 then I'll need more information from your 'Console Error Logs'.

Only if you decide to share with us your particular situation. Guild Wars should install and run like any other Game. Other than the Game Installer, Games don't need some other installer to make them work. Only someone who reads the instructions for the proper installation.

Option to boot into leopard has disappeared mac pro/boot camp

I have a mac pro. running the latest version of leopard. quad core xeon 2.66 w.4 GB of RAM. Runs like a dream. Sadly, however, I absolutely had to run a windows program natively. So I dutifully went out and bought a copy of vista, installed it via boot camp, and went merrily on my way. Booting in and/or out of either OS, as warranted, was perfectly smooth. Then I had a few weeks away from work, and when I returned, it was as if leopard had vanished. Starting up I found myself in windows. Odd, as I had the defaults set to open in MacOS. So I restart, holding down the option key. No MacOS. Only windows. Then I see that Vista is yelling at me cuz I have yet to "activate" it and I now apparently have a fake OS. So I activate the *****, all goes well, my fake copy is now miraculouslt genuine again. So I restart again, holding down the option key, and no change from before. So I do it again only this time I zap the PRAM first, and THEN hit option, and same thing, windows only. So I go into windows looking for the Boot Camp Assistant control panel thingie, guess what, it aint there. So I go to startup and recovery options in Windows (control panel, system, advanced) and attempt to reset the default to Mac, only there is no Mac option. OK so now I am perplexed as ****. So I do a system restore in windows, to a restore point just a couple weeks ago when I am, in fact, quite sure that everything worked. and I could boot into and use either OS with ease. Once it restores and restarts, I'm back in windows AGAIN but now it says my OS is a fake (again) and I have to activate it (again) and STILL no sign of Mac OS or boot camp assistant or anything like it anywhere. I dont wanna do anything else cuz now I am seriously afraid I am gonna f* it all up even more. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help. I am doomed. Where did my leopard go? What do I do? How do I fix this? There is a chance you somehow programed your machine to boot to Windows only. To undo this you need a functional Boot Camp Manager. You can repair the Boot Camp Manager using your OSX install DVD - WHILE IN WINDOWS. (Just boot to Vista and shove the DVD in the optical drive - then the re-installation of Boot Camp Drivers and BC Manager can begin).
Before you do that - right-click My Computer then click Explore. Click local disk (C). Next click Program Files and Boot Camp should be about 5 or 6 items down (alphabetically) Click Boot Camp then kbd.mgr (KeyBoard Manager) IF THIS activates Boot Camp Keyboard Manager you'll have no problems choosing an OSX reboot option. NOTE - in my own case, clicking kbd.mgr only prompted the tray icon to appear (which for me is great because I can right-click that icon to access the Boot Camp controls....) but it might work either way.
If it is gone / broken - then find and Click your Set Program Access and Defaults and then Click Change or Remove Programs. You might still have enough of your old Boot Camp Install there left to start a repair (without the DVD). Just locate Boot Camp Services and Click "Change" and repairs will begin.
Anyway - using the Boot Camp Manager you can force a reboot to OSX just by choosing. Good luck.

Driver issue FIXED in Vista / boot camp with new, unibody macbook pro!!

Hay people, I found a fix for the freezing issues with Vista running in Boot camp with the new, unibody Macbook pros. The driver for the 9600M Gt is no good if you install it from the Apple 2.1 version driver disc (Mac osx disc)for some (most) of us.
I needed to go to Nvidia's site and download the one from DECEMBER 08. If you click the "download drivers" tab on the site, scroll past the current driver it wants you to look at (go to the near bottom of page), click the archives, and input your OS version. Also input "Gforce" and "M" series when needed. It will give you a choice of two drivers. DO NOT CHOOSE THE FEB 09 Driver. Thats the BAD driver for most of us. Choose the DECEMBER 08 driver. Download and enjoy. Be sure to roll back the VGA driver (or the current driver) first before you install this. It should work.
I've been through the ringer with this for weeks now and have even tried to take my MBP back to swap for a new one. Apple wont have any of that so I thought I was SOL. Not quite. This DOES work for me with Vista. It also works for Windows & if you have it handy.
By the way, I am posting this for people who HAVE HAD THE FREEZING problems, not for people who haven't. Apparently there are some out there who are running Vista just fine on their unibody MBS's. Most of us are not.

This never worked. I sold that machine and got a new 17" unibody. IT, by the way, works just fine. I KNEW it was that **** 15'. It took 30 more seconds to boot up I found out also.

Boot Camp 3.0 recognises Mac HFS drives but does not list all folders

I have just done a clean install of Boot Camp/Windows XP using the Boot Camp 3.0 drivers that come with Snow Leopard, and was pleased to find native support for Mac Drives (HFSJ). Whilst all of the Mac drives in my Mac Pro are recognised and can be opened and explored in Windows explorer, a number of folders in one of the drives didn't show up. I could access them by typing the exact path in windows explorer, but when using the mouse to open the drive a number of folders could not be found. Furthermore, windows applications, such as media libraries, would not pick up any files in the folders that couldn't be seen in explorer.
I went back to OSX to check that all of the folders were indeed present and they were. So in the end I reverted to using my Macdrive software again and all of the folders showed up again and worked as expected. So, it may be that the new bootcamp drivers are not all they are cracked up to be.
Anyone else experienced similar issues, or got any clues as to what I might need to get this working right?

I am having that issue, but haven't worried about it since I've only booted to windows 2 times since the upgrade. Both times I've experienced a much more aggravating problem. Both times in order to reboot to OSX I have to use the install disc to repair the OSX drive because something renames it to "disk1s2" plus some counts are invalid. I use Macdrive, but since SL the mac volumes appear just as any other drive icon. Using Parallels or Fusion works as it always has, automatically shutting of Macdrive which leads me to think that Macdrive may be the culprit. Gonna try disabling it completely while running virtual and see if that makes it work. If not it'll just be another aspect of my Mac that Apple updates have made useless.

Boot Camp supports Windows 8.1. Did you remember to install the Boot Camp support software?
To download the Boot Camp support software for your MacBook, start up in OS X by holding down the Option key while your Mac is starting up and choose your OS X volume. Then, open Boot Camp Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities), tick the option to download the Windows support software and follow its steps.
After copying it to the USB drive, start up in Windows and install it

I can't install Boot Camp Windows drivers from Mac OS X v10.6 install DVD

1- I already installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit using Boot Camp Assistant 3.04 on my new Mac Book Pro 13" purchased this week, on a 60 G partition.
2- While in Windows 7 and after inserting my Mac OS X installation DVD, the screen displayed the Auto Play "DVD RW Drive (D:) Windows Support "
box where I selected: "Run setup.exe Published by Apple Inc." and double click on it
3- Then the Screen showed the "Install Assistant" with two options on it instead of the supposed "Welcome to Boot Camp Installer" . The option were:
Remote Install OSX and DVD or CD Sharing.
4- At that point I didn't know how to continue, so I quit the process and now I NEED YOUR ADVICE ON HOW TO.

No i can install the boot camp, but does not acept the windos 7
It runs all to the end the installation of windows, Then it begins, creating a new user, and when it will start , it CRACHES!

Boot Camp bug with new Mac Mini?

OK, so I have used Boot Camp now for years, on a variety of Mac platforms, and I have always been able to set it up and run Windows, including Windows 7 64 bit. That is, until I purchased my new Mac Mini i7 (non server version) with the WD 750GB internal, with 8GB ram. As the new models no longer offer a built in SuperDrive, I purchased a Pioneer external Blu-ray drive and have it connected via FireWire 800.
I have a brand new retail Windows 7 64 bit installation disc and have downloaded and burned the Windows 7 drivers to a CD.
I followed the instructions implicitly, but always hang on the reboot that should go into Boot Camp and begin the Window 7 install. Instead, I get the dreaded "Boot disc not found. Please insert a bootable disc and press any key" error, from which there appears to be no return.
Anyone have any ideas or is this just a known bug?

This same message was displayed in my MacBook Pro yesterday when I partitioned the HDD, however in my case I hit the "Quit & Install Later" Option as I planned to install win 7 later. When I rebooted my Mac to my surprise it had defaulted to my DVD drive and could not find the disc (obviously, since I wasn't planning to install it). I remember that in SL this issue was not present. Ultimately, I had to hit the option key to boot back into OSX Lion and reset my Macintosh HD as my start up disk via system prefs.
As for your case I would suggest hitting the "option" key during start up and see if your Mac can recognize your Windows 7 disc. If it recognized select it with the keyboard arrow keys and when it is selected hit the "return" key. Then the Win 7 DVD should boot and then follow the instructions of the Windows 7 Installer.
My suggestion is to fill a bug report to Apple via their feedback section:

As far as I know Bootcamp 4.0 is extremely buggy, yet I do think that OSX Lion overall is a very stable and snappy OS, I noticed that my system performance has not been that much impacted by it very much. My boot times went up by 3-4 seconds longer than SL and shutdown times went up by 1 sec only, as for app launch time they have remained the same. Hopefully further updates to OSX lion will address these and other issues.
