Boot Camp selection missing

First of all, let me say I'm a Mac newbie. Made the switch from M$. But, for business reasons, I had to install Boot Camp with Win Vista. Now, here's the twist. . for 3 weeks, I was able to switch between Leopard and Vista without a hitch. Then, I decided I should image the Vista partition (volume) with a commercial imaging program. When the imaging program completed, I found it had messed up the Vista startup files somehow, and Vista would no longer start up. Switching back to Mac OS using the option key during boot let me get back to the Mac OS. So, using the Boot Camp Assistant, I elected to run "Start the Windows installer". I used the Vista DVD to run a "repair" on the Vista installation. Afterwards, I found that indeed, Vista was repaired, and things went back to normal with the Boot Camp option working fine to switch between Mac OS X and Vista. BUT, in Mac OS X, I then found the Windows option within "Startup Disk" in System Preferences is no longer there. I can boot to either Mac OS X, or Vista using the Option key during boot, but that's the only way to shift to Vista from Mac OS. In Vista, I still have the Boot Camp option in the Vista System Tray, and it works fine. Any suggestions on how to get the "choice" back in the Startup Disk options of System Preferences??
P.S. In spite of the problem, both Mac OS X and Vista function just fine.

I don't know how to correct your startup preferences, but see:

The fourth post from the end describes an AppleScript to reboot from OS X into Windows. You could use this instead of the Option key at startup.

  • Boot camp partition missing

I'm trying to install Windows XP on my MacBook Pro and when it asks me to select a partition during Windows installation, the boot camp partition I'm supposed to select is missing. I created a 32 GB partition using Boot camp Assistant and it's not showing up. The only partition that is showing up is "C: Partition1 [Unknown]". Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
such behaviour usually comes up when your XP CD is not at Service Pack level 2 (SP2) but rather an older one.
Check with the disc label of the XP CD or, if you don't find any hint there, insert the CD while in OSX and look at the root directory of the CD for a file named 'winip51.sp2'
If that file is not there, your XP CD is not a SP2 one.
XP SP2 (at minimum) is a must for installing through BootCamp.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1899
Microsoft has introduced some new features with the SP2 which are essential for installing XP on a Mac.
While there are very little successful installations of a XP SP1 on a Mac, in the majority of cases it simply does not work.
If you have access to a Windows PC or have a friend with one, you can use this procedure http://www.winsupersite.com/xp/sp3_slipstream.asp to make a XP SP2 or SP3 installation CD out of your older XP CD.
No need to shell out extra money.
    Hope it helps.

  • Boot Camp partition missing, VMware Fusion not working

    I'm using OS 10.10.2
    Windows 7
    Fusion 7.1.0
    Winclone 3.7
I've been sharing a boot camp partition with Fusion for a while. I don't know when it happened but when I recently tried to log in using Boot Camp, the partition didn't show up in Apple's start up screen or in the Finder even though I could see it in Fusion.
I needed to expand the partition so I backed it up with Winclone changed the partition from 40 to 75 gig and reinstalled the Winclone file.
Now I'm unable to boot into Windows using Fusion and I still can't see the Boot Camp partition when I start up.
    Fusion said
    so I did.
    The new virtual machine said
    and
Now it wants me to upgrade Windows.
    Please help.

I saw R.NTFS so I started on the Windows DVD and ran Repair.
Unfortunately I still can't get Boot Camp to do anything beside give me a flashing cursor on a black screen.
    What else can I do?
This is from the terminal screen after I did everything above. It still says R.NTFS

  • Duplicate Volume on Boot Camp Selection

An odd, but not serious bug that has cropped up on my MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.7.2. I had Boot Camp setup with a Win 7 partition and when I held option I saw the two drives. One Macintosh HD and one Windows. I had to delete the Win 7 install to change out the version of windows. I used the Boot Camp assistant to delete the windows parition and then setup a new one and installed Windows 7 without problem.
Now, when I hold down option at boot to choose the OS I wish to boot into I get 3 options. Two of them are 'Macintosh HD' and one is 'Windows'. I've tried and both 'Macintosh HD' load up the same volume. Windows loads fine. I've checked the Disk Utility and there's no phantom partition or anything, just the one Mac OS X parition and the one Windows partition. I've also checked under /Volumes in Mac OS X and there is only the Windows volume and the symlink for Macintosh HD to / (no mysterious third entry).
Again, this doesn't appear to be a serious problem from using the laptop, but it's an odd quirk that I'd like to get rid of if at all possible.

I figured out what the problem was. The recovery volume for Lion was appearing as Macintosh HD instead Recovery HD. Also, if you have FileVault on the recovery drive disappears as a selection when at the Boot Manager.

  • Boot Camp selected drivers

I'm thinking of installing Windows on my MacBook Pro and I have a few questions.
If I don't install any drivers, will Windows be able to access any files on the main partition, the one that has OS X?
If so, do I have an option to skip the driver for Macintosh file system when installing all the other drivers?
I'm asking this because I don't want Windows to be able to access any of my files on OS X.
I'm using MacBook Pro 13", Late 2011, Mountain Lion.
Also, is there any workaround to install Win XP instead of Win 7?

If you don't install Boot Camp drivers, Windows won't be able to access to your OS X volume.

In that case, you will have to install each driver manually instead of running the Boot Camp drivers installer.

As you are using Mountain Lion, you can't install Windows XP because Mountain Lion only supports Windows 7 and, soon, 8

  • Boot Camp Partition Missing after shrinking Mac Partition

Hello Chris I have a OSX 10.9.2 running all upgrades, Powerbook 2.3g i7 16 GB , Had a boot camp partition of 49 GB, running windows 7 all working fine.
Decided to bump the windows 7 to 100 GB. Used disk utility to decrease the mac partition to 401.6
Image of the way it is now.
The Gray part is what is from the apply done the original time.
After I hit apply. I then restarted and tried to enter boot camp by holding down the altOption key as usual but only the OSX and the Recover partition where there No Windows.
NOTE: did the Windows 7 partition increase from 29 to the 49 GB before this same way and everything worked fine for over a month till i decided to double the partition to 100GB.
In the preferences the Mac Hd only shows up, no network or windows.
Network does show up when holding down altOption Key
Saw that you might be the best help I would like to talk to you and get your Genus going

  • Boot Camp Utility Missing From Windows 7

    Hi all,
I'm running an 8-core Mac Pro blah blah blah with 3x1t hard drives. I've used the Boot Camp utility to make one of those 1t hard drives into windows 7.  This worked perfectly, in fact I'm currently typing from Windows 7. However...
When I've done this previously there was always a Boot Camp utility within Windows 7 (in the bottom right of my task bar) which allowed me to switch back from Windows 7 to Mac, and vise versa... This time the Boot Camp utility within Windows 7 which allows me to go back to Mac has disappeared ... I'm stuck in Windows 7!
Any idea why this might be? And how I can might download Boot Camp or something to rectify this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Matt

Your OS X 10.6 DVD has the 3.0.4 drivers and you would then need to update 3x to get to 3.3
So do you or did you get to 3.2 at least? 3.0 and 3.1 were buggy.
Mounting and accessing HFS drive volumes was also causing BSODs; and does not work when there are Apple array volumes.
There is also and better place to look is control panels: Boot Camp with its own startup disk section
'x' on startup = Mac OS
Check Services and startup items. You should have
    OSSwitcher
Apple TimeServices (without which time will be off every time you switch OS)
Programs control panel: Boot Camp there? try Repair.
Lion allows downloading Boot Camp 4.x driver from Boot Camp Assistant to put on USB device or elsewhere that you access in Windows.
www.apple.com/support/bootcamp guide faq how to articles etc
Maybe you have a corrupt system and time to do a chkdsk and also boot from Windows DVD and allow it to do system repair or restore from a good check point

  • Boot Camp disappeared

I have a XP partition that was built by Boot Camp and everything worked great for over a year. All of a sudden boot camp is missing both in XP and in the Mac partition. Now XP won't boot normally. Luckily I just backed up everything because I want to install Win 7. I had XP set as the default drive to boot, so now I have to hold down the Option key to boot Mac. Why would the Boot Camp assistant be missing too. This happened after Mac upgraded itself and one file was an upgrade for Boot Camp.
What happened? Also Mac is running very slow. I did a Verify Disk and it reported everything is OK.
I really don't know much about Mac to figure out what is going on.
Also how do I upgrade my Mac OS. Is Snow any better than X 10.5.8 or should I just upgrade to the latest X OS.

Snow Leopard speeds up a lot of functions but does tend to come with more bugs because it is almost a total rewrite of MacOSX. At v10.6.2 now, some of the bugs are gone. I wouldn't use anything else.
Also Snow Leopard brings you Boot Camp Assistant 3 and updated drivers on the SL install DVD.

  • Is it possible that Boot Camp was not installed on my newly purchased imac?

I go in to apps and utilities, and i don't see it there.

  • Boot Camp Crash - 32GB missing

    Greetings,
I ran Boot Camp to install Vista. I got the the partition page, selected 32GB for the Windows partition. While the program was partitioning the drive, the OS crashed so I had to power down the computer. When I rebooted and ran Boot Camp again, I noticed 32GB missing from the main hard drive, yet no partition was made. Disk Utilities shows only the Mac partition.
I am running OS X 10.5.2. Any ideas on how I can get my missing 32 GB back?

    Ricky Murphy wrote:
I was able to recover my space running disk repair via the Leopard DVD.
However, every time I run Boot Camp assistant, it freezes while partitioning. The screen goes grey and I get the message that says I need to hold down the power button to turn off the computer. This happens every time.
    Why is this?
Well at least you have an OS back
You may still need to reconstruct your HD by cloning, erasing and cloning back. It could be a corrupt BCAsst.app or some corruption on your HD that DU cannot repair.
Performing a terminal operation from your DVD may help, but be sure you have a cloned backup.
    The operation is
    fsck_hfs
    and this may help
    In a terminal, run
    man fsck_hfs
and you will get this, and more:
    NAME
fsck_hfs -- HFS file system consistency check
    SYNOPSIS
    fsck_hfs -q [-df] special ...
    fsck_hfs -p [-df] special ...
    fsck_hfs [-n | -y | -r] [-dfgl] [-m mode] [-c size] special ...
    DESCRIPTION
The fsck_hfs utility verifies and repairs standard HFS and HFS+ file sys-
    tems.
Read it carefully and then run it from your DVD or in a single user mode.
Again, do NOT do this without a backup.

  • Select CD-ROM Boot Type Error installing Windows 7 in Boot Camp walkthrough

Much thanks to John Anderson at AndersonHatch.com for his excellent
walkthrough for installing Windows 7 x64 in Boot Camp.
Since his post there has been an update to ImgBurn which adds a few
screens and dialogues whose proper navigation may not be obvious. He
also left out a few choices that SHOULD be obvious but you know how
    THAT goes.
Here then, cribbing liberally (plagiarizing, actually) from John's
walkthrough, but including some "for idiots" footnotes (which are
more for my own benefit than yours), is the most current (as of March,
2010) walkthrough, which presumes you have a DVD of Win7 (if you
downloaded an iso file from somewhere I'm sure the instructions are
similar but I'm not exactly sure how. Perhaps someone can add a
    comment with this variation?)
    ON A WINDOWS MACHINE:
1: Download and install ImgBurn.exe from the cloud.
2: Insert your Windows 7 Install DVD, preferably into your
---DVD-ROM drive but if possible into an orifice of whomever is
---responsible for ordinary shmoes like you and me having to spend an
---entire day Googling this problem and then following a simple
---27-step procedure to do the most basic thing you can do on a computer
---which is to install an OS. This is before we can even use the computer
---to do anything useful which at this point is a dubious prospect. But I
    ---digress...
3: Extract your boot image as follows:
---a. Using ImgBurn, go to "Build" mode. All fields should be blank at
    -----this point.
    ---b. Select the "Advanced" tab.
---c. Select the "Bootable Disc" tab

-----drive to save to and keep the filename "BootImage" and click "Save."
-----This operation only takes a few seconds. ImgBurn presents a dialogue
    -----box upon success.
---e. When it asks if you would you like to use the boot image file in
    -----your current project say "Yes."
4: Add your disk to your new disc image
---a. On the left side of the ImgBurn window in the "Source" panel
-----click the little folder icon (second down from the plus sign)
-----and browse to select your Windows 7 Install DVD (Just select

    -----DVD-ROM drive.
---c. The "Source" field in the upper left should be blank but the
-----directory is "D/:' I know this is confusing but trust me.

---b. Select the iso file you created in 5b.

If you have ADHD like me you can skip the "Verify" cycle (the disk is
probably fine) and use it to install Windows 7 x64 on your Mac and
return to your regularly scheduled life.
    Enjoy!

You cannot stuff a UEFI into an EFI32 ROM, there isn't room; EFI32 is 2005-2008; UEFI 2.x was the first to support 64-bit.
Apple does have an article on which Macs DON'T support 64-bit Windows (I think it actually just says my Mac Pro 2006 doesn't support Windows 7, which of course I am running! But had extra hoops.
It is possible to install Windows 7 32-bit on one drive, then boot into that, and install Windows 7 64-bit ON A SEPARATE drive or partition (my mac has 4 internal drives). Else, you get into 'triple boot' and the pitfalls and problems.
Technology changes and you can't always go back. Even having a 64-bit processor is only part of the equation.
