Boot Camp suddenly refuses to boot

My Boot Camp partition suddenly refused to boot. Restart, hold down option key, select Boot Camp partition and my MacBook Pro just locks up... mouse won't move, arrow keys do nothing, system is unresponsive. If I let it sit there long enough (about 10 minutes) it eventually reboots into Mac OS X with no warning or dialogs. The frustrating thing is, I completely reinstalled my system twice with fresh copies of Mac OS X 10.5 and XP SP2 and its happening every time. I was using XP SP2 on my Boot Camp for months with no issues. I'm at a loss as to what's going on. Anyone else have this issue? I'm dreading reinstalling everything again when the same thing has happened twice already with fresh installs. Ugh.

You can find the drive make, model, firmware revision easily enough in OS X's System Profile.
In Windows, Device Manager, Disk drives, open the tab and you will see the raw model name and revision.
WD has Lifeguard (XP only, not supported in Vita x64 and Win7 that I use, may work in Vista x32).
Seagate has their own Seatools but given the problems they have had recently and for years with their firmware....
And maybe it is a hidden secret, but I use to hang around place like
http://www.storagereview.com
as well as the need to test and diagnose drives and setup RAIDs that I can be sure run at their best.
I've had a drive that no amount of OS X tools (and I have half a dozen good commercial tools) worked on a bum WD drive but WD Dignostic did the trick. Same for Maxtor when there was a problem with their DM10 and Macs - and that drive, and MLIII were excellent drives in their day, after years of unreliable and poor sales, customer fear and skepticism forced them into being acquired unfortunately into the Seagate family).
If you know the people, that counts for more than anything, and doesn't hurt it is so darn close! Oftentimes it is just easier to RMA, even if the drive isn't at fault (a lot of drives just have to be reformatted and have bad file system or at worse a bad block).
Erasing a drive, even a "zero all" is not always able to find and remove or repair/fix those bad sectors, at least not from what I saw with OS X Disk Utility.
Using chkdsk - most Windows users do know, but it has had a bad rep (for good reason) but latest iteration of NTFS I do trust, even more so than HFS+ for now.
In fact, one of the original reasons for putting Windows on my Mac was just to be able to update drive firmware and do other tests.

My Apple TV all of a sudden refuses to show the movies from my MacBook and says it needs to set time network. What is that?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV should set it's time automatically from the network time server, if it isn't doing this try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a 30 seconds, if this fails try resetting or restoring it.

  • Keyboard problem-sudden refusal to properly record key strokes

My wife's iMac 1.6 (running 10.4.3) has suddenly refused to properly reflect keystrokes for the 3, e, d, c, 6, y, h, n, -, [ and n keys (a partial list, there may be more, I stopped counting but most of the rest seem to still work ok). It has also stopped recording the use of the "command key" (i.e., can't command/stroke anything). The mouse works ok and she promises me she didn't spill anything on it. She informs me that this all started right after she was burning a CD, there was some "odd noise" and she rebooted the machine. Doesn't seem like that should be related, but it's the only abnormal event she reports.
I've tried to play around with the International/Input Menu preferences and mixed/matched all different combinations of "US' "US Extended" and the "Character Palette" togles with no apparent effect.
    Any suggestions?

Adobe Reader XI in my wife's pc suddenly refuses to open PDFfiles. A message pops up saying: EULA display has stopped to function. I have reinstalled Reader XI several times. Earlier we have opened thousands of PDFs. We never had this problem before! We use Windows 7 and Explorer. What can we do? Please help! Lisbeth and Carsten

I had the same problem just now and what worked for me was i archived a email in MS outlook using the Adopbe PDF dropdown menu and then I had full access to X Pro again.

  • Why does pages suddenly refuse to save a document back to our server after editing?

why does pages suddenly refuse to save a document back to our server after editing?
and can i specify a default save-as location?

The default save location is the one used to open the document.
The default save_to location is the last used one.
Both are stored in memory and written in the application's preferences file when we close it.
It's quite easy to change the defaults in the preferences file but we must do that before opening the app and if we use an other location once the app is open, we will lost the defined default location.
From my point of view, the best scheme is to use an Applescript to save.

  • ITunes suddenly refusing connection to Apple TV

    Hi,
Problem: iTunes suddenly refusing connection to Apple TV!
I noticed that the above was occuring and checked out iTunes to be dismayed not to see my normal Apple TV in the iTunes devices list.
My problem is similar to ihttp://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1631334&tstart=0
Which appear not to have been answered - yet has "Helpful" answers available: 2 . "Solved" answers available: 1 . (whatever that means??)
The only change I've made recently is not renewing mobileme services. My mobileme user id was also my Apple ID (which should not have expired with the mobileme account). To protect the Apple ID I changed the associated email address to an non mobileme one. As an extra precaution updated my iTunes to the new account email address and verified itunes computer authorisation as well.
At the same time thinking that the Apple TV might need to have its iTunes connection refreshed I removed (as it was not working anymore anyone) the original iTunes setting and set to reconnecting using: settings>Computers>Connect to iTunes
On the Apple TV the usual dialogue appears with the expected 5 digit passcode. I then expected iTunes to pick this up which did not occur in a normal fashion. What did come up was an inane dialogue box with the following comments (the same as I had been getting before all this nonsense started):
    'Authentication required
To access this site, you need to log in to area "daap" on 0.0.0.0
Your login information will be sent securely
    Name:
    Password:'
    etc
Obviously I've tried my updated Apple ID / registered email - but they don't work for the login and there appears to be no other explanation for this (obviously I've noted Apple's implementation of DAAP, however I still can't find a solution - hence this post)
I would really appreciate a solution to this as I am now unable to use my Apple TV whatsoever

    Hi,
I am having the same problem, getting the following message when launching iTunes "To access this site, you need to log in to area "daap" on 0.0.0.0." I just recently update my OS to 10.5.6, but when I launch iTunes (8.02) and try to synch either my iPhone 3g, Apple TV or the wife's Ipod touch, none of which appear.
    Is this a know problem?

  • Boot Camp Assistant refuses to recognize my Windows 7 Installation Disc nor my USB

I have an iMac 20inch, early 2008 model. Back when I was running Leopard I installed Windows 7 with Boot Camp from a Windows 7 Installation ISO my friend had and I burnt it to a DVD and installed it without any problems. Later, after I got tried of windows, mostly because Windows really blows unless you want to game (which is what I was using it for), and I had contracted a virus, so I deleted Windows along with my partition after backing up any data that I though I might be able to use later. Now I am fully upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 and I downloaded the Windows installation drivers and whatever else Boot Camp persuades you to download and now at the step where I choose how much of my hard drive I want to partition, after I click partition, Boot Camp refuses to recognize that my installation disc is there no matter what format I put it in. I have followed every instruction given to me and nothing has worked. I'm thinking about trying to just partition my hard drive in Disc Utilities and formatting the new partition and then copying the ISO to the partition and seeing if it'll boot up.
Anybody have any better ideas, or solutions?

Well I have tried downloaded a Windows 7 ISO, and tried mounting it on a USB flash drive and booting it from the USB, but that didn't work either (I heard that my version of OS X doesn't support that anymore because I already have an optical drive.)
BTW - what do you mean exactly by running disk utility on the DVD drive?

  • Boot camp setup refusing to continue

I have been trying to run boot camp setup to install Windows XP, but an error message saying: The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition, appears refusing me to continue with the setup. Here are 2 screenshots of the setup and error:
    http://arunaurl.com/2f9f
    http://arunaurl.com/2f9g

It seems that one must have the internal HD unpartitioned.
Have you partitioned it? Sadly, I did, before reading the Boot Camp instructions. I was hoping to put the Windows stuff on an external FW drive...
Now I've got to start over...

  • HELP! My 2011 MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) build suddenly refuses to boot

Hello, I am new to this forum because I hadn't had any troubles yet.
I built my system in July/August 2011. Here's what it has:
    MSI P67A-GD65 (B3)
Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge CPU
    16GB Corsair Vengeance 240-pin DDR3 1600
    650w Corsair Enthusiast PSU
MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5/OC GeForce Graphics Card
    1x 2TB Hitachi 7K3000 7200RPM SATA 6 GB/s (With Windows 7 64-bit installed)
    2x 3TB Seagate 7200RPM SATA 6 GB/s (For storage)
I have used this computer for graphics and video editing...it has served me faithfully. Yesterday evening while editing a Word document, I got "do you want to save your changes before exiting?" and of course I said yes. Then to my surprise my computer proceeded to shut down and reboot. At first I thought maybe I missed a Windows Update message telling me it would reboot in xxx minutes so I was not alarmed. But then as I watched it reboot, it gave me the POST message that there was no disc drive recognized. I thought that was weird since I never noticed it before. But then after the BIOS screen with the MSI graphics thing I was faced with a blank screen except for a flashing cursor two inches from the top of the screen. When I realized that this wasn't going to leave, I got a bit worried so I did a reset through my tower's button and same thing happened...I unplugged everything and let it sit for a few minutes... restarted 10 minutes later....same thing. Did it again and then went into my BIOS to look around. It showed no HDD's connected and I had 3 hooked up. I was concerned my HDD went bad so I connected it to another pc and accessed it with no trouble as another storage...I was happy my files are all there. So then I reconnected to my original build and got the same POST message, but this time the drives were visible in BIOS....but still no boot.
I have another blank SATA HDD so I removed all my HDD's and connected it by itself along with my SATA DVD drive and I tried to do a clean Win7 install on it. But at the point in the install process where it asks WHERE you want to install Windows, no drives showed up. So that door was closed. I tried the same thing again after swapping SATA port locations, thinking 1 was defective, but I got the same treatment from all of them...nothing recognized during the install process, although the drives are showing up in BIOS....
I think I know why the POST message is saying 'no drives detected,' though...I read it is saying that based on the SATA ports being used...I have 8 SATA's on my MOBO...4 6gb/s; 4 3gb/s. 7-8 are 6gb/s and ONLY when I have a HDD plugged into one of them does it show on the POST screen...which I still think is weird, and seems to have just started happening last night with the rest of the problems...but I could live with that since I could disable the message in BIOS I think.
But I have tried to clear the CMOS...all three ways...jumper, button, battery. I reset BIOS thru BIOS.... Nothing changes. BTW, in BIOS I ran a RAM memory check and it passed. Besides, I am not hearing any weird beeps...related to that....
I don't know why this would happen after working perfectly for 2 years... And why would it politely shut down in the beginning of the process anyways? I mean...I appreciated being asked to save my changes...but I don't know what else to do...PLEASE OFFER SUGGESTIONS...any help is appreciated.
Thank you in advance...I hope someone can help me! I am still covered by warranty...but I want to do this right.
    Thanks!
    Marie
EDIT: BTW, I have also tried unplugging everything from the pc except for the DVI and power plug in case that was interferring....

On a slightly different topic...would it work (I have never done this!) to take my OS HDD and boot it on another PC? I am thinking this would not work because of system files and etc., but I have always wondered this and now would be the best time for me to know
It mostly works if the components used aren't too special. As you have no RAID setup it should work. However you will need to reactivate Windows once it made it. Of course you will also need all drivers for the new machine. Be aware that you might not be able to connect to the internet before you installed the proper driver for the ethernet adapter.

  • My computer suddenly refuse to start. When I turn it on it gives the startup sound but the screen is grey and after a while a little folder icon with a question mark inside turns up. It doesn't blink. What to do? Nothing happens if I try to start up from

As I say my computer, a mac mini refuse to start. When I turn it on it gives the startup sound and the screen turns grey and stay that way for a long time. And in the end a small folder icon with a question mark inside (it doesn't blink) turns up in the middle of the screen.
I have tried to start up from the installation CD holding down the C key on the keyboard. Same result. I have tried different key combinations while starting up. No result or rather same result. Nothing. Is the computer suddenly dead?
I was about to buy a new computer but I need access to my data on this one (I write this on an iPad) but hven't yet found a way.
    Anybody have any good advice?
I thought it was a software problem, that the computer couldn't find the startup software or something and maybe it is, but I am beginning to fear that it could be a hardware problem.

You need to re install OSX. If you have the dmg file downloaded via torrentz this is how you can create a bootable external HD or Flash drive (8 GB+)

  • Time Machine suddenly refuses to backup to non case-sensitive drive

There is another thread on this which for some reason is marked as resolved, so I thought I'd post a new thread. Suddenly after months of no complaints I get the following error:
    *+Time Machine Error+*
+A volume you are backing up is case-sensitive, but the backup volume is not.+
+To Select a different backup volume, or to choose not to back up the case-sensitive volume, open the System Preferences and choose Time Machine.+
The only thing I've changed is that yesterday I ran Software Update. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what was updated, but I suspect Quicktime was one of them since I needed to reboot. So now I'm at 7.4.5 in Quicktime.
Time Machine refuses to backup my drives now complaining about the case sensitive filesystem. The thing is, *NONE of my drives are case sensitive.* Looking at the Change Drive window in Time Machine, I see that most of the drives on my system say "reforat required" if I am to use them with Time Machine. All drives on my system are *Mac OS Extended (Journaled)*. The fact that some drives are not requiring a reformat and some are, even though they all are the same format is quite puzzling.
I took a spare drive and allowed Time Machine to reformat it for it's use. It has now reformatted the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Case-Sensitive).
Can anyone shed any light as to why TM would suddenly require my backup drive to be case sensitive when none of my drives are?
    This make no sense...
    -K

Ok - Running Disk Utility Verify on both the system disk and the TM disk seems to have magically stopped this error. Note that Disk Utility didn't actually find or fix any problems with either disk. The problem just went away....
    It doesn't make any sense.
