Boot Camp & Vista 64

I've searched through these forums and have seen similar questions, but none have really been answered/helpful for my problem.
I used Boot Camp to install Windows Vista Ultimate 64 on a partition of my Mac hard drive. Vista installs without any hitches. I used my Mac OS X discs to install Boot Camp drivers, however, I got the "boot camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model". I used the information from this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7301717 to get the x64 Boot Camp drivers and updates, and installed using the "Run as Administrator" trick from this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1758941&tstart=30
Long story short, nothing is working properly. I go to device manager and it says the drivers aren't installed for iSight, network, bluetooth, etc. However, I do have the Boot Camp icon in the tray. How do I go about getting Vista to work properly?
Note: I had Windows XP running on Parallels perfectly. I also have tried a 32-bit version on Boot Camp and encountered the same problem.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sorry for the length, I just want to do a thorough job in leaving info. Here's some more info...
Under Device Manger >> Other Devices I have... Built-in iSight, Coprocessor, Ethernet Controller, Network Controller, and SM Bus Controller. All have the yellow exclamation mark and "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" under Driver status.
Sound is not working either (even though it says Realtek High Definition Audio is working properly).
My Vista partition doesn't show up in OS X's System Preferences >> Startup Disk. MacBook always seems to boot up to Vista even though I set the Mac HD as the default startup disk.
Lastly, under Control Panel >> Programs >> Programs and Features I have 11 "Windows Driver Package - Apple Inc. Apple <insert device name here>" each taking up 552 MB, which doesn't seem normal.

  • Boot Camp, Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, 2009 Mac Pro Quad 2.93, ATI 4870 HD

    Hello All,
I’ve run into a problem installing Boot Camp with Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 on my early 2009 Mac Pro Quad 2.93 with Apple’s ATI Radeon 4870 HD (the one with one DVI and one mini-display). I followed the instructions from the Boot Camp Installation and Setup Guide, and everything was going great until I hit page 12 of the Guide (Step 3). The Boot Camp drivers installed without error, and prompted me to reboot. Upon rebooting onto the newly installed Vista x64 partition, the screen went black after the chkdsk screen appeared. I can boot into Vista safe mode, but booting into Vista normally results in the black screen. On a hunch, while in safe mode, I uninstalled the ATI video drivers installed by Boot Camp. I was then able to boot Vista normally, but only with the standard VGA adapter. Then I tried installing the latest 9.4 ATI drivers from the chipset vendor, AMD, http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx. Booting normally after the ATI chipset drivers were installed left me with a mostly black screen, and a few swizzles of horizontal color, but not enough to make out any sort of image. Once again, I was able to boot normally by first booting into safe mode and then uninstalling the ATI driver, leaving me with the standard VGA driver.
The displays I have tried so far are 1) Apple Cinema HD 23”, and 2) Apple Cinema 20”. Also, I have tried all 6 permutations with the ports on the Apple version of the ATI Radeon 4870 HD with both displays (using the mini-display to DVI adapter), 2 permutations with both displays, and 4 permutations with single displays. All permutations result in the same black screen after installing Boot Camp drivers.
Am I missing something? It seems to me that there is a display driver that needs to come from Apple that will work with the Apple version of the ATI Radeon 4870 HD in Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 attached to an Apple display. I’ve installed Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 and many other operating systems in the past 27 years of working with computers, and typically with video cards I’ve had to get the drivers from the vendor that shipped the card, not the chipset vendor. Sure, occasionally the opposite is true, and I don’t mind spending a few days to figure out what works best for me as long as I believe I am making progress.
Has anyone else run into this problem with his or her early 2009 Mac Pro Quad 2.93 with Apple’s ATI Radeon 4870 HD? I’m posting this in the Boot Camp forum as I think this problem is rooted in the Boot Camp drivers, specifically for the Apple ATI Radeon 4870 HD. Please let me know if I should post elsewhere.

You are the second person I think I've seen with trouble using Mac Pro and ATI drivers (other was on Mac Pro forum).
When updating graphics, there are extra steps that insure you get the best working drivers.
I've always found Apple to be behind the curve on Windows support. Drivers that come with a card from the vendor ususally means ATI or Nvidia, and even then, you go to the web and download and install the latest tested / beta / qualified drivers. Some people try a variety of driver versions to find the one that works best.
Apple has not been updating Boot Camp drivers for Late 2008 and on Macs. Boot Camp 2.1 is now over a year old. What is on your OEM Leopard DVD is the only drivers I would use - if at all! try without is what some do, and then see if you can selectively install. Under Windows 7, I don't need or install, and now with the RC/7077 version of 7, Microsoft 'blocks' installing Apple Boot Camp drivers as known to cause problems.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unistall the various Apple services, drivers, startup items that you can live without or until you narrow it down. iTunes 8.1+ in Windows can break and prevent ability to even use optical drives and devices for instance.
Some tips for upgrading drivers, one from eVGA forum but should translate.

  • Boot Camp, Vista and Mac Pro X1900XT

    Hey all,
I'm experceing what appears to be a common problem with the Mac Pro with X1900XT option and Boot Camp.
Vista installs file and everything is recognized except for the Radeo X1900XT card. When I boot up, I get what appears to be 16-colors displayed. When I tried to use my Boot Camp driver disk, everything installs fine except for the Radeon card.
I've also tried downloading and installing Windows Vista Catalyst drivers from ATI.com (version 7.3 as the release notes mentioned HDMI is supported by that version) and still the same problem and now my Vista crashes constantly before I log in.
Has anyone experienced? Suggestions or a workaround?
P.S - I also own a black macbook and the same copy of Vista worked flawlessly on it, even with Aero effects turned on.

The Mac Pro needs 4 FB-DIMMS minimum.
While this Mac Pro I own is the most capable, flexible and enjoyable machine I have ever owned, who says it will run circles around your friend's custom built? I suspect for many/most tasks you would be correct. Except for 3D simulation. PC video cards have higher performance clocks and drivers.
After using my MP 2.66 for 6 weeks as a PC and a Mac I have concluded:
This is a Mac, and should be used to run Mac OS (the real reason to buy a Mac). While it's great to be able to run XP and Vista on a Mac, for general purpose apps usage (geek nirvana), if high performance video cards are critical get a PC.
The Macs strength, is the dividends returned by it's tight integration as a platform. For example, I popped in a second video card and it just worked. No half dozen pop-ups telling me about new hardware and all that blather.
Once I get this sling off of my arm, I will be building a PC for heavy duty simulation.

  • Copying Boot Camp Vista partition to new hard drive

This is OS X Lion using Boot Camp version 4.0.4 with Vista on a separate hard drive. I want to move it from an 80Gb drive to a 1Tb. Looking for the quick and cheap way of copying the bootcamp partition to the new drive because it's the same Mac Pro so only the drive size will be different. Google searches has me using two software to copy the Apple bootcamp and Winclone to copy Vista.
Isn't there a simpler way without purchasing software I will only use once? I'd rather just reinstall Vista and the other software manually than pay anything over $20 to do it.
    Any advice is appreciated.

My apologies. I didn't make myself clear. I followed the proper procedure and got the error message. I tried the other formatting to see if it would help. All the same results.
I found a possible solution on another Apple thread. I am going to move the drive to have Vista installed moved to the first stall on my Mac Pro 1.1. It is claimed that this will bypass the issue of GP if do that. Then after installation I can switch them back.
I will post the results. I had no issue the first two times I did this since using Bootcamp when I first got this Mac Pro over 7 years ago.

  • Mac Pro Boot Camp Vista Quickcam Ultravision

Wondering if anbody is experiencing this issue? I completely lose sound when I install the Quickcam Ultravision Vista driver. A simple uninstall brings it back.

You'd probably be better off posting your question in the Boot Camp discussions:

  • Boot Camp, Vista, Gear Head Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse

Just added a Gear Head bluetooth keyboard and mouse for Mac to my Mac Mini.
This Mac Mini is running Boot Camp with Windows Vista Home Premium.
The bluetooth keyboard and mouse work fine under Mac.
When I boot to Vista, I was able to install the Mouse, but running the setup wizard for the keyboard does not work.
When I run the bluetooth set up wizard for the keyboard, I get to the screen that lets me create or choose a passkey. I can do that, but when I go to the next screen, which is where you input the passkey on the keyboard, that screen only appears for about 2 seconds, and then errors. It does not give me the chance to type in the passkey.
BTW, the mouse works fine when switching back and forth between Mac OS and Vista without resetting it.
    Any thoughts?

You need the 64-bit version of Vista for one thing to use more than 1.9GB RAM.
Most of the problems people have with SP1 update have been pre-existing 'dirty file system'
To backup or clone Vista, I would use WinClone from OS X, or use Vista Businss/Ultimate before hand to backup files and system and make sure you have a good restore point before applying updates. Taht is one thing I would like to see Apple do, which MS updates often will.

  • IMac Extreme + Boot Camp + Vista SP 1

Partitioned drive using boot camp and was able to successfully install Windows Vista w/ SP 1. System came up, inserted Leopard DVD to install drivers and ever since doing so, Windows will only boot into safe mode.
Have not tried seeing if Fusion can read the partition successfully or not.
    Any ideas?

    Update on this....
identical iMacs bought at the same time (when the debuted last year). Bootcamp install of Windows Vista w/ SP 1 works like a dream. Only change up from install directions (because of failure on other machine), was that post driver install, ran Apple updater and pulled down the boot camp updates. Worked with no issue..
On second machine (which assumed identical) not so lucky. Machine would only boot into safe mode after driver install. After getting into safe mode, disabled the ATI drivers and left it boot (successfully) back to normal mode running the standard Microsoft video drivers.
Download the ATI2600 drivers from ATI and installed. Video is back and golden, but without the dual monitor support that came with the Apple drivers.
Does anyone know if its possible to extract just the ATI drivers off the Leopard DVD and give that another go? I would really like to have the dual monitor support capabilities that I had on the first machine (24" iMac Extreme with a 19" Viewsonic monitor). Only difference between the two systems is the external monitor.
    Thanks,
    macfoo

  • Boot Camp Vista

Ok, I am getting the mid grade macbook (2 Ghz, 2Gb ram, 120 Gig HDD) and I am planning on getting bootcamp for mindless windows tasks. I have acess (legal) to an upgrade to windows vista ultimate. It is the 64 Bit edition, and I want to know if I can up grade my copy of Xp to the vista Ultimate (x64) without any trouble.
Created PC   Windows XP   Vast Knowledge

No, im afraid you cant without trouble... its doable but it would be complicated as the boot camp drivers disk that works fine on xp, dosnt work in vista...
Its not long till leopard is released, this will fully support vista in boot camp.. id just wait and use xp for now.

  • Boot Camp:  Vista side won't start up

When I click on vista on the boot camp menu, it loads and all, but it goes to the black error screen that says like "start normally" or "start with command prompt" or "start in safe mode" etc etc, and no matter what I click on, it just won't load and it restarts the computer. I have no idea why it's doing that, or how to make it stop. Any ideas?

That is indeed an error message from Windows Vista. You cannot "click" on that screen, it only accepts keyboard input such as up arrow, down arrow and enter. But even if you do nothing, it counts down toward zero and then tries, again, to start Windows. As it restarts again, I assume it fails.
If you could navigate the screen with your keyboard, you might be able to select "Start in safe mode" and see if that works. From there, you might be able to solve the problem.
If the "black screen" does not respond to your keyboard, and you have a wireless Apple keyboard, try connecting a USB (PC) keyboard to your computer and use that (you didn't say which one you have).

  • DVDs and Audio CDs refused in OS 10.5 - fine under Boot Camp Vista...

    Hello.
I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 SR (bought November 07) and now find myself having trouble with the optical drive recognising certain audio cds and dvds.
I thought I'd try seeing if the same thing occurred under Vista (Boot Camp) on the same machine and they mount fine. Which leads me to believe OS 10.5.4 is to blame.
I have repaired permissions and I still have the same problem so could anyone suggest a remedy?
    Many thanks in advance.

It seems to be random now. It'll play fairly new DVDs but I put in the original DVD release of The Matrix and it won't mount.
I really don't want to be sending my only computer away over a crappy optical disc drive. It seems that this is quite common with MacBook Pros by reading some forums.
I think it is the drive after all though.
Anyone else suffering with the same problem?
    Cheers.

  • Boot Camp, VIsta with SP1 x64 clean installed. Please help!

I clean-installed Vista Ultimate 64bit with SP1 (SP1 comes with Vista, not a separate download) on the latest macbook. As expected Boot Camp Application doesn't work (it doesn't even install).
1.I want to use the function keys (F1, F2, etc) for brightness and volume, which installation program should I run from the Leopard disk? I don't think I can find this "driver" online.
2.How can I get bluetooth on my macbook working? Which installation program should I run from the Leopard disk?
3.iSight camera. Is there a driver for iSight camera in 64bit Vista?
I see there's a "x64" folder in Leopard disk, under folder "drivers". Should I install everything in this folder? I haven't tried yet.
    Thanks for help!

    Hi Bjorne,
how did you manage to do a clean-install of Windows Vista with SP1 from a slipstreamed media? If I start my Macbook with the Vista SP1 DVD while holding down the "C" key, I will only see the following message:
    1.
    2.
    Select CD-ROM Boot Type:
I can't go on any further, because hitting any key won't work.
The problem seems to the EFI bootloader on the Vista SP1 DVD which is compiled for 64-bit EFI environments (U-EFI 2.0)! The EFI environment used in Apple computers is based on version 1.10 and runs in 32-bit mode. I've found this information on the rEFIt homepage http://refit.sourceforge.net/info/vista.html and I've also found the homepage http://www.jowie.com/post/2008/02/Select-CD-ROM-Boot-Type--prompt-while-trying-t o-boot-from-Vista-x64-DVD-burnt-from-iso-file.aspx from Jowie who has the same problems. He has found out how to make the Vista SP1 DVD booting on an Apple computer by modifying the DVD image which seems to kill the EFI bootloader...
How did you manage to boot from an unmodified Vista SP1 DVD image?
    Greetings,

  • How to migrate Boot Camp Vista Partition to new Mac

    Hi there,
I've been working with Vista on my iMac 24" (Core2Duo 2,8GHz 2007) using a Boot Camp partition. I'll be migrating to a 27" Quad-Core iMac soon. Does anybody out there know if there's a smooth and simple way to also migrate the Boot Camp Partition without new installing Vista OS and Windows Apps?
SL 10.6.2 on old and new iMacs. Any info appreciated.

I figured graphics drivers would be an obstacle...just talked to a friend and got some advice:
    1. When display stays black after installation of Windows 7 64 bit (signal is on Mini-Display port)
restart from Windows 7 DVD - open command prompt (shift+F10) and delete all ATI Drivers.
    2. Restart Windows 7 with default graphics drivers. Download ATI Desktop drivers, modify using ATI MobilityModder, install modified drivers.
    It works.
Use of Magic Mouse's multi-touch features in Windows requires Apple's Bluetooth update 1.0 for Windows.

  • Boot Camp, Vista lost DVD drivers

I installed Vista on a Mac Pro, everything was working well. Oh for about 3 weeks, then for some unknown reason, Vista lost the drivers for the Pioneer DVD-Rw drives. I looked all over the net for Vista drivers for the Dives and nothing, (even Pioneers site) Does any one know were and how i can get the drivers reloaded, i did restored it to a point were the drives worked, and they still don't work, I get the yellow exclamation point, for both drives.. Ive tried making a copy of the CD in MAC, and transfer it over to the Window's but it will not allow me to "make changes to file folder"
    Please help. (Window's game addict)

  • Boot Camp, Vista, Japanese Kanji, Problems...

Ok, here's the deal. I just upgraded to Leopard and installed a Japanese copy of Vista Home Premium. However, even now that I have my computer running a Japanese copy of Vista with all the local settings in Vista switched to Japanese I still can't play my Japanese RPGs. The install window pops up with lots of gibberish characters and the game can't read or locate files because Vista isn't properly handling the Japanese characters. Is this due to the fact that I have Leopard set to English? Do I need to change everything on my computer to Japanese? Am I missing something? My Japanese isn't too bad, but it isn't great either so I'm wondering if I'm missing a simple problem where I'm just not understanding the kanji.
FYI, when I first installed Vista I switched the settings to a Japanese install, (the only option available,) and the keyboard/interface to English. However, even after I completed the install everything showed up in Japanese except for my Boot Camp assisstant which showed up totally in English. I then switched every setting in Windows I could find over to Japanese, but still no joy.
Any ideas? Please. I bought Vista just so I could play the games my Mac can't handle and if I can't figure out how to make this work I'm going to be really depressed. If no one can help can anyone point me to a place where I might be able to get help?

I'm really not sure about how your computer is set up but check in regional/language, and make sure japanese is set as the default, not english. English does get installed since most software uses it. Also, I have english version of Vista home premium and didn't want english. But rather Japanese, care to send me the iso of the japanese cd. I can't ask Microsoft because I have to pay 150 to start a help session...

  • Boot camp vista can't find airport/wi-fi

I always use a wireless connection and my connection is working right now. I just installed vista using boot camp and I want to know if there is a way that I can get online while I'm on vista. It says it is missing the proper drivers or something. It doesn't seem to know that my macbook pro has an airport.

Unless you need this for gaming I recommend running from a VM, business performance is usually more then fast enough and you can install from the iso.
