Boot Campt Assistant Partitioning Error

I've partitioned my drive for Windows multiple times now, and every once in a while I get the oh-so-fun missing hal.dll. I don't even know if it's logical to repartition after Windows dies out on me, but I do it because there's usually a couple month period before I repartition / reinstall. This time, however, when I went to partition the HD, I get the error that states that some system files cannot be moved, backup and restore. I am fully aware that this problem has been discussed on these and other forums. But, a lot of those discussions are out of date, and some don't address my specific question: Will using iDefrag followed by a disk permission repair fix the problem? I don't want to lay down the $30, but that's a much more appealing option than a full restore.
I have a 350ish GB drive. 196 taken by Mac. I want to allot 101 to Windows, leaving ~48 to Mac.

I just discovered this same partitioning issue yesterday after I uninstalled Fusion and attempted to set up Bootcamp. Here's my question-I used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable clone on an external drive. If I now format the drive in my MacBook and install Leopard instead of Snow Leopard, and set up my Bootcamp partition, can I then clone back from the external drive? Although this would be a little tedious, it seems like it should accomplish everything I need to accomplish and get my computer set to install Windows 7 on the Bootcamp side.

Hi. Does Boot Camp Assistant partition using GUID or MBR? Does it initially format it with FAT32, leave it blank or format it with NTFS for the Windows installer to be able to detect it? Microsoft recommends GPT for 2TB and larger volumes.
MBR can't boot from a volume larger than 1.9TB.
Windows 7 can see GPT just find, but not HFS+, and AppleHFS and MNT are buggy.
Disk Utility can create a drive that uses MBR.
GPT has support for sub-tables and for Master Boot Record.
Apple's implementation of MBR might be on the weak side.
Windows 7 wants to actually have and boot from the 100MB system partition.
Apple, Intel, Microsoft, Sun etc are members of EFI Group and Unified EFI is supported on Windows Vista SP1 64-bit and later 64-bit versions, but Apple's is more proprietary and differs, but is the sole reason really for Apple's excluding and including which Macs are "supported" (which really isn't true) running Windows 64-bit (Vista/7) - that they have to have EFI64 or UEFI 2.x.
The external drive is likely something else, as you could format a drive to GPT and NTFS and have it work fine.
The best way to 'clean' a drive of all partition tables and volumes is with Windows and something like WD Lifeguard or similar tool.
As for hybrid, while some Macs can now boot by default to 64-bit kernel mode, I prefer the "from the ground up" of Windows 7 64-bit which still supports and runs 32-bit apps, but of course mandates 64-bit drivers in places.
Your Apple disks not only have GPT, but have to have other partitions like EFI (128MB) after any HFS partition. GPT does have an MBR - see the Apple tech note #2166.

The protective MBR is an MBR that defines a single partition entry that covers the entire area of the disk used by GPT structures and partitions. I am getting the error:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
I read up some on google, but all of them says that they have crated a partition and that is the problem, I only have the standard "Macintosh HD".
I tried to create a partition manually in disk utility but then the error message: "Partition failed with error message: Could not unmount disk."
Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy.

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

Boot Camp Assistant quit unexpectedly when creating partition

I am using an Imac 21.5" (Late 2012) version of imac.
Thought of installing win7 to my system but i am hit with this error as Boot Camp Assistant quit unexpectedly when i clicked next after selecting the partition for windows,

Same thing for me too. I have "downloaded the latest Windows support software from Apple" and put it on my USB stick.
Only if I try to disconnect the USB drive I get this message:
The installer disc could not be found.
Insert your Windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for the disc to be recognized.
Then if I connect the USB stick again, I get this message again:
Boot Camp Assistant quit unexpectedly.
Any tips on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated!

Boot Camp Assistant: Can't Partition Drive

I've been trying to partition my hard drive using the Boot Camp Assistant so I can install Windows XP. However, whenever I try to partition the drive, I get an error message saying that my hard drive needs to be a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. I opened up Disk Utility to see what was wrong, and it said that my only hard drive, Macintosh HD, was formatted as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. I tried bumping the partition size down from 15 gigs to 12 gigs; the progress bar was a little under 25% full when I got the error message again. I'm planning on arranging to get support at an Apple Store, but I wanted to see if anybody on here knew what to do first. Any ideas?

When you tested the clone, did you change the default boot to the clone? You should have simply booted by holding down the Option key.
I don't know what happened to your HD or original OS, but if you reboot and hold down the option key, your original OS should show up in the selection menu.
If not, boot into the Leopard DVD (press "C" key during boot) and after the language screen, in the menu, top left under Utilities select disk utility and run it, repairing HD and permissions. Then see if you can reboot into the original OS. You may have to hold down Option key again until you boot it and change the default back to the original OS.

Why does Boot Camp Assistant already think I have more than one partition on my hard drive?

I'm surprised I've found no remedy for this problem in my searches so far. My symptom is that when I run the Boot Camp Assistant app, I get the following error message:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition." The instructions that are provided along with the error message are: "Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
When I try to follow the instructions, I see that Disk Utility shows my drive as having a single partition. Nevertheless, I've backed up my Macintosh HD volume, re-artitioned the drive into a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume (once using the Snow Leopard Installation disk and once using Drive Genius 3), and restored my Macintosh HD volume. After all that, I still get the same error message. I even defragged my hard drive, which seems to have helped some users I've read about, but it hasn't helped me.
Something worth noting is that I recently upgraded to a bigger internal hard drive, and before doing so, I deleted the Boot Camp volume. I innocently thought I'd just do a fresh install sometime after replacing the hard drive, but hindsight tells me that I might have fallen victim to my own ignorance.
Is there a value stored in a register somewhere that's telling my OS that I have more than one partition when I really don't? Can someone out there help me do battle against my ignorance?
I'd be grateful for any help that can be sent my way...

I used DG3 to initialize the HD, which essentially erases the disk if I understand correctly. I haven't used Superduper before, so perhaps that's worth looking into.
I did mentioned the use of DG3 to ensure that I had a single disk partition. I guess the restore from a clone or Time Machine was implied...

Boot Camp Assistant crashes when partitioning drive (exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS)

I run Mountain Lion, a fresh install, brand new Macbook Pro. HD: Samsung 840 Pro 512 GB SSD.
When trying to go through Boot Camp Assistant / Setup it works fine until it wants to repartition my drive. It then quits unexpectedly and returns these errors:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x000000000000003c
Everything else on this new machine works like a charm. I checked permissions, verified the disk - no issues whatsoever.
Can anyone help me out with this?

I had the same problem, so I decided the system had too much going on. I stopped Time Machine and unmounted the disc, then I closed every other running program except Boot Camp, disconnected all unnecessary devices, selected the partition size and then didn't touch a thing, just went and made a cup of coffee. When I came back it had started and eventually partitioned fine.

I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate on my MacBook Pro that runs OS X Lion. I have read through a lot of the other threads and I think I understand that the I need a clean, defragged part of the hard drive to do this on. Boot Camp Assistant tells me to "Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again." That's all good and everything, but I don't have any idea how to do that. I don't want to risk losing any of my data and I don't want to download any "freeware" to try and help me accomplish this task. I would like a step by step guide on how to make this work. Also, is there anyway that I could have prevented this error? I don't understand why Boot Camp Assistant is even on my MacBook Pro if everyone that uses it will get the same error. I have done nothing but taken it out of the box and started using the Apple software that came installed on it. If there is not a simple way to do this in the Disc Utility, then I don't want to do it at all. I really don't like the idea of putting all my data on an external hard drive just to have this done.

Just installing OS updates and programs will
Write the installer
Uncompress the file at say 7x and write the actual installer in a free area that often may be anywhere but at the far end of the partition is common.
Write new version or copy of the files being changed/updated (myfile.new and myfile.old)
Delete the entry in the directory for the temp files and versions.
A program that can show your hard drive and where files are and where free space is, and show fragments.
OS X tries to eliminate small files with fragments when they are rewritten and when it can find contiguous free space to write the new file.
That can actually work against you, as it might fragment the free space also.
When a drive gets down to 20% free space there is a performance hit, you are using slower areas of the drive (inner tracks are usually 50% slower) and having more trouble finding filles and where to write files.
Clone Mac OS is one of the easiest and safest methods.
Click on source (Mac Harddrive), click on or drop the backup partition / drive into target icon.
Click "Run"
you end up with bootable (test it to be certain) exact copy.
Unplujg and keep it on a shelf
Update it before you inistall a new version etc of OS X or make changes.
Have two: one safe on the shelf from Week #1 and new Week #2
Disk Utility can do that.
With huge hard drives free space should not be an issue. The lack of a feature to defrag as part of Boot Camp or Disk Utility is why there are iDefrag and others, but they are slow and best run from.... a 2nd hard drive running OS X rather than from CD. and never great idea to do w/o backups or on live system.

Boot Camp Partition Error

Hi all. I am having an issue with Boot Camp Assistant, trying to install Windows 7. I've done a search, but every situation is unique so I figured I'd make my own discussion. I apologize if this bothers anyone.
About two months ago, I partitioned my disk to 32GB in order to install Windows 7. Something came up, and I never got around to installing it after the partition. I decided soon after I didn't really need Windows (as I found an alternative), so I got rid of the partition and put my HD back to normal. Well, tonight, I decided I actually did need Windows 7, so I went to partition my disk again to 32GB, only this time I was met with an error message:
The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
Why could this be occuring ever since I removed the initial partition for Windows? I don't get why it had worked two months ago and now will not. Any assistance on the matter is greatly appreciated. I honestly don't feel like backing up my entire disk, but if it has to come to that, it will. I'm running 10.6.3.

Put the disk in the drive, reboot, hold the option key at the sound of the chime, when the boot manager appears select the cd. Choose Disk Utility (Tools Menu) and repair the disk.

- I've recovered from external drive (mountain lion 10.8.1 ) which i prepared by Lion Diskmaker before.
Current issues:
1) I have Recovery HD but when I boot from it - Reinstall Mac OS X option is not working
2) I have EFI password and won't be able to clear it as well as reset PRAM
3) Boot Camp Assistant is not working as well with the error in the subject
Any ideas how to fix all of these?

Boot Camp Assistant says Install rather than Partition

I have a second gen MacBook (Intel core 2 duo) I installed Windows XP via bootcamp back when I had OSX Tiger. Today, running OSX Lion, I deleted the windows partition with boot camp assistant, wanting to increase the hard drive size and install Windows 7. I successfully deleted the windows xp partition, and restarted the computer. Now I want to repartition the hard drive and install windows 7. I open boot camp assistant, click continue (only option) check 'install windows 7' and not 'download the latest windows support software from apple' as I already have this on an external hd and click continue. I choose the hard drive size, and boot camp assisnt has the option to 'install' and NOT 'partition'. I dont know why this occurs. anyway, if I click install, boot camp assistant says 'the installer disk could not be found' even though my windows 7 dvd is in the computer.
So, my question boils down to, 'why can't i partition my disk for windows 7?'

After restoring, I lost my Recovery HD partition. I am currently working to get a new one. Perhaps I will install it AFTER boot camp is finished, which might solve the multiple-partitions error? I could use some advice here.

I have a Mac Pro 4.1 using 10.6.5 and BC Setup Assistant 3.0.1.
I'd like to enlarge the space on my BC partition of my startup disk, but I have the familiar boot camp assistant error which tells the user that in order to install boot camp you must update the Boot ROM Firmware. I've already updated the firmware to 1.4 (MP4.0081.B07; SMC Version 1.39f5), so this gets me nowhere. What's a little different about my problem than most of the others I've seen is that I have an early 2009 Mac Pro, not a laptop, AND journaling is enabled on all my disks.
I tried downgrading to 10.5.6 by installing it on another drive and starting up from that. It shows that Boot Camp Setup Assistant is version 2.0, but still it tells me that I need upgrade the Boot ROM Firmware.
From within Windows I installed Boot Camp 3.1 and 3.2 and restarted both times. I've run Disk Utility and verified and/or repaired Disk Permissions on startup disks; so, too, Verify Disk.
I've tried installing Boot Camp on a new, blank, journaled drive. I get the same update your firmware message.
Any help you can offer over this American Thanksgiving Holiday will be greatly appreciated.

Paragon-Software CampTune $20 can resize.
But I would just put Windows on its own hard drive instead.
Has nothing to do with OS X. Your drive's free space and how fragmented can be an issue when creating Windows partition.
The error message is in error itself and not helpful or accurate.

Boot Camp Assist can't partition hard drive

Boot Camp won't partition my 500GB internal HD. I get the message:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again." I had recently used SuperDuper to replace my original single partition internal HD with the new 500GB HD with three partitions. I had not setup Boot Camp on the original HD. After getting the Boot Camp Assist error message on the new HD I used SuperDuper to clone back from my original HD (which was now external) with a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. I then ran Boot Camp Assist again and got the same message. I ran Disk Utility Verify Disk Permissions and got some errors which I then successfully repaired. I still get the same Boot Camp partition error. Any suggestions?

When you partition your drive you are given the option to format it for OS 9, if you choose this option your drive will be formatted to be incompatible with Boot Camp. This incompatiblity will remain when you put it back to a single partition unless you go to options and select the top radio button (format for Intel Mac) to create a GUID Partition Table (at least that's what I did and it fixed the problem).
