Boot CD burning ....

Hello,
I have a .dmg image of a disk that I would like to burn to make a bootable CD with a OS X system on it. The image has all the system files for OS X.
If I open the .dmg file and select the corresponding CD icon (let's call it CD IMAGE) to burn it, the result is a CD with, at the root (first) level, a folder named CD IMAGE and all it's content. This way the system files on the bootable CD are not recognized by the SYSTEM 'S STARTUP PREFERENCES, so I cannot select it.
If I only select the files in the original CD it seems to be missing some files because the size of the CD IMAGE is 435MB and the size of the files is 393MB. The copy is not the same, aliases are missing and the folders do not copy ate the same root level in the folder. The system is not recognized either by the SYSTEM 'S STARTUP PREFERENCES.
If I select the .dmg file to burn it, it creates a copy of the .dmg file.
Whay am I doing wrong or not understanding ??? Thanks in advance.
Robert

I see. It appears as if the original disc image is not a bootable image so you're going to have problems creating a bootable image from that file. The easiest way to make a disc bootable is to make an image of a bootable disc.

  • Cannot boot after burning the Lion install image to DVD or USB

No Lion install has been performed after the download. I tried burning the image InstallESD.dmg to a DVD, and also restored the image to a USB drive. The results are the same when I hold down the option key upon restart and select either the DVD or the USB drive. I get the gray linen screen while the little circle of dashes spins, and two pictures alternate forever. A picture of a trackpad (with an arrow pointing to the power button) followed by a picture of what looks like a cpu tower, again with a switch in the upper right corner looking like a power button. My trackpad and Mac Pro are obviously powered on, so what is wrong? Any ideas?

Works fine following these DVD boot directions made for the same model of Mac, perhaps your disk isn't good or you missed something.

    Yesterday it didn't boot anymore.
    - the d-bracket gives me 4 burning leds (this means system booting?).
    - no lights on the mouse or keyboard are burning
    - stripped components one after another, same error
    - system doesn't give error beeps
    - system doesn't give the single booting beep
    - no shortcircuit
    - every fan in the case is on as usual
Is the cpu or mainbaord dead now?
    Any ideas?

  • Why won't boot camp burn the windows support software to my disc?

I have a Macbook Pro with retina display, just in case that matters. I bought it in early January, and I'm running OS X 10.8, I believe. My problem is that I installed windows 7 on my MBP fine, but now it won't connect or even detect my wireless connection. I did some research and I now believe that this is because I didn't install the windows support software. I tried burning it to a disc through boot camp, but it stops the burn about halfway through. It has some error message saying that it cannot burn to the disc; I've retried this several times only to get the same result. My MBP didn't come with the OS X disc and I've heard that this resolves the problem. If you have any information, I would greatly appricate it. Thanks in advance

Download the support software and choose option 2
Then choose a place to save it.

  • IMac DV G3 400MHz will not boot with OS8.6 or 9.2.2 CD-ROMs

Here is the situation: I have burned copies of the install disks for OS 8.6 and OS 9.2.2 that I wish to install onto our iMac DV. I insert them into the computer while running OS X and it reads it correctly. However, when I attempt to boot from the CD, it skips it and starts booting from the hard drive.
When I am in OS X, I check the Startup Disk preference, and I set it to the CD-ROM, which it detects as containing a system folder. Then when I reboot, it continues to skip the CD and go right to the hard drive.
When the hard drive is formatted and does not contain an OS, and it only has the CD-ROM inside, it gives the Missing System Folder icon upon boot.
The machine has Firmware 4.1.9 and works well in OS X. It is currently formatted with five partitions on a 10GB hard drive, all formatted as Mac OS Extended. All partitions have the OS 9 drivers within. It has a 400MHz G3 with 256MB RAM.
    Any thoughts?

While I am working on acquiring a pressed version of OS 9.0 and OS 8.6, I have additional information for you: I am able to boot and install from burned media for OS 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 on this machine (which is an Orange iMac DV per the above note about the SE version). This tells me the machine can boot from burned media, but not into those OSes.
Another interesting fact: on a hunch, I copied the System Folder from the OS 9 install disk to the root of one of the hard drive's partitions, and then switched the Startup preference to that folder and tried it. It booted far enough into OS 9 to give me a happy Mac icon, then show the Mac OS 9.0 logo, but then popped up a message saying that the media was only able to boot from a removable drive, and that I would have to restart. Predictable, to be sure, but it shows the machine is at least capable of booting to OS9 somehow...

  • OS 10.5 - Boot Camp - Windows won't read Mac Disc for Driver Install

    Hello everyone.
I have been through half a dozen headaches and a dozen hours of time wasted on this problem. I've tried multiple windows discs untill finally I bought a brand new version of Windows XP Pro. I've followed all of the instructions in my printed boot camp manual and I continously run into one problem:
Once windows is installed completely and I am at the windows desktop and need to eject the windows disc and insert the leopard disc to install drivers, I do so and windows does not recognize the mac disc whatsoever. It says the drive is empty, it is 0kb of 0kb, I cannot explore the drive, I cannot do anything. If I open it it is blank. I cannot access the internet in any way on windows because there are no corresponding drivers.. so I am at a loss.
Can anyone please help me? What do I do? I really apologize if this question has been answered, but I could really use some help.

    Hi Sotaris,
It's a little vague what you mean by the "leopard disk". Do you mean the disk of drivers Boot Camp burns, or the actual Leopard installation DVD?
What you're supposed to do is launch Boot Camp while booted to the Mac OS. One of the first things it does is create a CD of Windows drivers that XP will need for your Mac. So you must have a CD-R or CD-RW on hand.
After that, Windows XP is installed. When that's done, there will be a number of hardware components that XP naturally doesn't recognize. That's when you insert the driver disk Boot Camp creates. I may have listed the order of things a little bit off here, but the main point is it sounds like you're skipping, or missing the part to create the Windows driver disk and trying to put the Leopard DVD in the drive.

  • Can you use a USB ext hard drive to boot from clone image?

I am not concerned about speed as much as having some kind of external drive to copy clone image to from my MacBook Pro.  I know with older Macs you used to have to use Firewire connections for the Macs to boot from the external drives.  I thought I saw something that said you now could also use USB.  I'm pretty sure my MacBook Pro 17 (June 2009) has USB 2.0 version ports, so should I be able to do this?  I know firewire would be faster but this is only for emergencies and until I could get my internal drive replaced.  Also, any suggestions on brands (WD, Seagate, OWC) would be useful.

Yes, hold option booting from USB cloned boot drives work.
Although FireWire 800 is faster as you already know.
As always check to make sure you can.
Another secret, Mac's can be option/c booted off burned ISO of PartedMagic cd's too.
What's nice about this little gem, the whole Linux operating system loads into RAM and you can copy files from the non-boooting Mac's internal hard drive to a external drive, of nearly ANY format.
You can also burn disks, as the PartedMagic cd spits out after loading.
And you can get on the internet, and do malware scans and a lot of other niffty things.

  • Booting the install cd "ARCH_201403" on VGN-FE41Z laptop

    Hello,
I burned the archlinux-2014.03.01-dual.iso on a cd (approx. two months ago) and tried to boot from it now in order to install Arch Linux on a VGN-FE41Z laptop. But I get the following error during the boot process: "Operating System not found"
I burned the image on the CD at the lowest possible speed. Furthermore I can boot from this CD on another laptop and install Arch Linux there without any problems. So why is this CD not working with VGN-FE41Z?
    Thanks

Head_on_a_Stick wrote:Check your BIOS settings & move the "boot from CD/DVD" option to the top, or select it manually...
Well, I did that before but it didn't work. However I just decided to do one more test after the failed boot and burned a Knoppix 7.2.0 Live-DVD. I can boot from the Live-DVD without any problems on VGN-FE41Z. So the question is: What is the difference between ARCH_201403 and Knoppix 7.2.0 DVD regarding their boot process? I think, I'll burn a Knoppix 7.2.0 CD now and try to boot from it as well in order to rule out the possibility that VGN-FE41Z only accepts DVDs as a boot medium. (I know, that would be *really* weird but I have to be sure...).

  • SLES Install.... problem getting started. At a loss

I have downloaded the SLES-11-sp2-x86-64-gm-DVD1 and DVD2 and burned the .iso's to a 2 disk set. I verified the disks and read the "readme" file on the dvd1 disk that says to insert and boot off of this disk. I have a fresh 2TB Seagate HD for a new install w/ 37gb windows partition and balance unformatted. Intel i5 processor on the new server. Boot sequence is set to CD/DVD player as first boot. When I try to boot all I get is the error "no operating system found. Press any key to repeat boot sequence." I know the boot sequence of drives is set correctly because boot disks for other op systems work fine as a test.
What am I doing worg this time???

So, might be talking to myself here but really need some advise.
The SLES-11-sp2-x86-64-gm-DVD1 I burned the .iso for did finally boot. Burned it off on another computer DVD burner.
I go through all of the install process, booting with the SLES....DVD 1. I am using a fresh 2TB disk this time(s) with all unallocated spce. The install goes through without showing any errors and then goes to the countdown to re-boot and re-boots. Re-booting with the DVD-1 disk removed, I still get the error "No operating system found. Press any key to repeat boot sequence." Which will not go away.
So, if I try again and put the SLES-11....DVD-1 install disk back in beforre-booting , re-boot and go to "repair installation" instead of new installation and then to "automatic repairs", I get a message under "Check File Systems" that says:
"Installing Kernal Modules for File System Support"
Loading failed for kernal modules: ntfs problematic
The auto repair does not allow boot file to be created and I'm stuck.
Still at sqaure one, just the other side of the square.
Still really needing help. If I don't get any replies, I'll try a new thread.
    Thanks

  • System Crash on 9.2 update - locked up Help

    Hello!
I acquired an iMac with OS 9.1. While on the MAC support site I noticed I could install a 9.2 upgrade. I downloaded it and installed it. On reboot the system freezes up about a 1/4 of the way into start up. Nothing. I've rebooted many times with no luck.
At this point I can’t access anything – keyboard/mouse are locked up. Every time I reboot is the same scenario.
Can download a boot disk (burn it onto CD from another computer) or is there a way to uninstall the 9.2. I don't have any software on CDs. It was given to me as is. Prior to the install of 9.2 it worked great. No issues.
    Any suggestions.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi, skierward -
Okay - it's very good that you can start up with Extensions Off. That indicates the OS itself and the drive are probably okay.
PrefRestoreInit was s shot in the dark - it's presence can cause an OS to fail to boot.
Since you can start up with Extensions Off, it is probable that you are experiencing an extensions conflict of some kind, one which you'll need to solve.
First, try restarting and then immediately press the Spacebar, keep it held down until Extensions Manager opens, which it should do just before extensions would normally start loading. In the Extensions Manager screen, select Mac OS Base from the pulldown menu labelled Selected Set. Then continue the startup.
If that boots okay, then select Mac OS All in the Selected Set menu in Extensions Manager, and restart.
If that boots okay, you will need to find out which of the other extensions you usually have enabled is the cause of the problem. This Apple KBase article outlines one procedure to do that -
Article #30929 - How to Resolve System Extension Conflicts
One thing that can help is to print out a copy of your usual set, so you can use it as a checklist. To do that - open Extensions Manager. Select your usual set of extensions (if you've not created a new set, it will be the one named My Settings). Then choose "Save Set as Text" from the File menu - this will generate a SimpleText document with the on/off status of all available extensions and contol panels.
Then change the Selected Set back to Mac OS All. Click the Duplicate Set button, name the new set something appropriate, and okay it. Make sure that set is now the Selected Set, and start adding in a few of your regular additiuonal items. Restart to test after adding in each group; when the problem reappears, you'll know the culprit was in the last group added. You can use the Spacebar at startup to regain access to Extensions Manager to reset it to a bootable set.
There is a technique that can speed up testing the extensions. After creating the duplicate set, add in half of your usual additional ones, and test. If that boots okay, add in half of the remainder of the usual ones. If it does not boot okay, uncheck half of those you added. This sounds tedious, but doing it by halves is actually very fast - even if you had as many as 500 extensions to test, it would take no more than 9 restarts to identify the culprit.
    Good luck -

  • Win7 x64 Installation on late 2007 MBP+Mountain Lion

    Dear All,
As a long time mac and bootcamp user, I've never expected to face this problem but I've been trying to do this for 3 days.
I'm having trouble installing bootcamp (win7 x64 ultimate) into my late 2007 MBP (2.4GHZ core 2 duo)
Pretty much use the bootcamp assistant from start to finish, tried using install dvd and create boot-able USB stick (by changing the plist.info on the bootcamp assistant package, as my MBP isn't supported.)
With USB stick created by bootcamp assistant, my mbp just simply won't read it even during startup and rEFit startup.
Sometimes it goes into the blank state and says no bootable device.
With win7 install DVD, whenever I use built in superdrive, it got ejected after 2-3 mins,
When I tried using Samsung external dvd burner/player, in place of who-knows dead superdrive, it went into blank screen with only a dash blinking (just like when the first time you start a PC) then disc stop spinning after awhile.
Burned few copy DVDs from extracted ISO (from the orginial install disc) and came up with same results
    Recent changes, current condition,etc:
    - Changed the stock 160gb harddrive into WD500GB blue scorpio.
    - Installed fresh OSX Mountain Lion downloaded from App Store (was Lion) and updated everything.
    - Had the very same win7 on bootcamp 3 installed on snow leopard few years ago and keeping it even with Lion (the exact same dvd!)
    - Superdrive cannot be used to write but can read normally (install DVD shows up normally in OSX environment.)
    - With USB created by bootcamp assistant, rEFit shows "legacy booting" and can't find files inside the USB
    - Installation is working flawlessly on my 2011 iMac.
    - Can still boot into bootcamp on old internal stock hdd (using external case)
    - DVDs burned are Verbatim DVD-R and Sony DVD-R, both are top brands.
    - Burner I tried to burn them are 2011 iMac's, 2012 MBP's, Samsung external dvd burner (all fail to boot on my 2007 MBP)
    - Tried the method to create usb stick on windows 7, still can't boot.
    - Burned DVD using Nero and alcohol 120% on windows 7, still fail.
I wonder if you guys can help me, I'm a designer and I really need to install Corel Draw on bootcamp so I can work on some CDR files on my MBP. And other stuff such as office's finance control program that can only work under windows.
    Thanks in advance!

Found a workaround, to sum it up, it's pretty much my dead internal superdrive (as for unbootable USB, that's still a mistery). What I did was moving the HDD to my 2012 MBP and install from there. The problem is now that since I installed it on another machine (with ofc all different hardwares) I got blue screen whenever I tried to start Windows7 (in 2007 MBP after moving the HDD back there).
Next step will be replacing the superdrive on 2007 MBP with 2012's. Or if someone got a suggestion like installing the drivers via target disk mode etc, please advice

  • CD Drive Malfuntioning Since 7.5 Upgrade

Since upgrading my iTunes to version 7.5, every audio CD I play sounds like it skips, and sounds the same way after being ripped into iTunes. I tried that same CD using Micrsoft Media Player and it works fine, and tried a DVD movie in same drive and it worked fine. It is something inherent to iTunes 7.5 and the way it interacts with my CD/DVD drive. I have not read in any of the other posts someone having the exact same problem. Help!

    OK, some questions:
    1. Which OS version; 10.5 or 10.5.1?
    2. When you installed 10.5, did you Upgrade or Archive & Install? And which version did you come from? If you have 10.5.1, did you use Software Update, or download and manually apply it?
    3. Which versions of Toast & iTunes?
    4. Open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. What does it say about your device & disc burning?
To Clean & zap your PRAM, start your Mac. As soon as you hear the chime, hold down the Command, Option, P, R keys (apple-alt-P-R). Your Mac will chime again. Keep holding them until your Mac has chimed 3 times, then release them. Hold down the Shift key. This will make your Mac boot in Safe Mode, which performs several housekeeping tasks as it boots. Your boot time will be longer because of this.
Once it's booted, try burning a disc from Disk Utility or the Finder.

  • How to create ISO images for Solaris 10 U6 (10/08) SPARC CD 1 and DVD

The format of the bootable DVD and CD 1 of Solaris 10 U6 sparc has changed from previous Solaris 10 update's sparc media, it now seems to be more like the x86 format, can anyone provide the new/specific mkisofs command to use to recreate (modified version) a sparc bootable ISO image file of these from their "unloaded" directory paths, I'm guessing the mkisofs command is going to be similiar what's used for recreating Solaris 10 x86 DVD and CD1.

    Alan,
Thanks for info, when I try this mkisofs command to recreate the Sol 10 U6 CD 1 ISO image I end up 16 KB short of the original downloaded ISO size of Sol 10 U6 CD 1, the generated ISO image when burn to CD doesn't boot, I tried using both mkisofs version that comes with Sol 10 U6 & version *2.01.01a53*, here's the test I did:
mount Sol 10 U6 CD 1 as /mnt (CD 1 burned from downloaded ISO from Sun that is *512904 KB* in size)
    mkisofs -G /mnt/boot/hsfs.bootblock -B ... -l -ldots -R -N -D -V SOL_10_1008_SPARC -o test.iso /mnt

I formatted the USB-stick with boot options, and I placed all files I need on the stick. Then, with nero, I choose CD-ROM (BOOT) and burned an IMAGE (Can't burn cd directly because my stick is to slow). Then I burned the IMAGE to cd.. and it worked prefect. I copied the BIOS files to my ramdrive, and flashed it!

"restoration data" - you are saying Restore Check Point in Microsoft/Windows-ese.
Again, no one I know has or would use "location" in same context.
I would reburn the electronic version to DVD and do a clean install. Make sure that the partition for Windows is also at least say 50GB, even more when using an SSD.
