Boot drive error message

Following a near disaster after installing security update 2005-009 i have 2 problems ( or maybe only 1)
When i do a verify on my boot drive i get the message from disk utility, INCORRECT NUMBER OF THREAD RECORDS, volume needs repair but it cannot fix it.
Any suggestions.
Second after I managed to get my boot drive running again following many kernel panics I now have a folder called damaged files, can I discard this as it seems to mirror my HD

Hi, Paul and Allan, et.al —
Paul — Fwiw, I agree with Allan about your apparent options.
When you launched Disk Utility from your Install Disc as part of running Disk First Aid, did you notice the S.M.A.R.T. status of your HD?
Before saying another word — have you tried to access and save any data that may not have been included in your last backup? Using FireWire Target Disk Mode from another (or borrowed) Mac might be a means to accomplish this...
I'm not familiar with the specific "incorrect number of thread records" error message you received — so everything below should be considered conjectural or based on the perspective of the references cited. Each file and folder (directory) in an HFS+ file system must have a unique thread record. Apple describes the technical details in technical note TN1150: HFS+ Volume Format and the File Manager Reference. On a more layperson's level — paraphrasing and quoting from this source and its linked refs. — on an HFS+ formatted volume, a Catalog file contains records for all the files and directories stored in the volume. File thread records and directory thread records are two of four types of records contained in the catalog file. A file thread record stores just the name of the file and the Catalog Node ID (CNID) of its parent directory; similarly, a directory thread record stores its name and the CNID of its parent directory. The other two records are file records and directory records that "store a variety of metadata — including CNID, size, time-stamps, the first file extents of the data and resource forks, and pointers to the file's first data and resource extent records in the Extent Overflow File."
My point in considering this is that an incorrect number of thread records suggests that the catalog file can't do its job properly in helping you to access your files and directories. As Allan concluded, this sounds like a potentially significant disk directory problem. Although the terminology differs, a MicroMat (makers of TechTool) tech addresses a TechTool "file thread mismatch (-92) error" message in this MacFixIt forum thread. Several users report their experiences. If the Disk Utility "incorrect number" and TechTool "thread mismatch" messages are comparable... the MicroMat tech's comment that "Unfortunately, the file thread mismatch is an uncommon disk directory error, and it is not possible to know whether the ultimate cause is software or hardware" may be relevant.
I hope that you follow Allan's advice — and that DiskWarrior 3.0.3, TechTool Pro 4.0.6, or ProSoft's DriveGenius 1.1.5 is able to repair the problem — or that you're in a position to perform an Erase & Install. Please keep us apprised of your progress, so others may learn from your experience.
Good luck!

I Googled, and Sony says that is a discontinued model, so I can't find a specification page

That makes me think the laptop discussed here has Intel AND AMD graphics adapters
To the OP (Original Poster) Go to the Windows Control Panel and select Hardware and Sound and then select Device Manager... In Device manager you click the + sign to the left of Display Adapters... and see if 2 are listed

MacBook Air will not boot. Error Message says "Your Computer restarted because of a problem."

If you can't start up and log in in the usual way, try in safe mode.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Log in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. If you have only one account, you are the administrator.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode.
If you're able to log in, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

• Cannot boot from hard drive error message

I bought Mountain Lion from the app store. I downloaded it and launched it. It began to install but when it asked what disk I wanted to install it on and I clicked my hard drive it failed with the message that I could not boot from this hard drive. So, I figured that the installer needed to be on an independent disk. So, I burned it to a DVD and ran the install program again. I got the same message. So, I plugged in an external drive, went to system preferences and set it as the startup drive. Rebooted onto the external drive. Ran the installer from the DVD and it failed at the same point. I tried selecting the external drive but it said that it was the time machine drive (which I guess was equivalent to "NO"). Anyone know how to fix this? Thank you.

Well, LOL, I did that prior to buying the software. It does meet the specifications. I found the solution on the support site. When I googled before I hadn't googled the error message verbatim. Doing so led me to this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3926 where I was instructed to create a tiny partition (128MB) and then run the installer again. No explanation was given as to why, but this did work and I am typing this via the new OS. Thanks for trying to help me baltwo! Best regards.

• Boot Manager error message on Windows 7 Toshiba Laptop

Well, I will start with what happened to it, though I don't really know. I was on the internet and it started freezing up horribly, then I didn't know what to do so I walked into the room of the house that doesn't get wireless, and gradually it unfroze. Then I went back to the other room got on again, then it just froze again, only this time walking into the next room didn't work, so I pressed the power button and shut it down. Then when I turned it back on I chose "Start Windows Normally" and I entered my password at the login screen, then it was on the screen that says "Welcome" and has the blue loading bar next to it, but I waited for at least 10 minutes and it still hadn't loaded. So, I try safe mode and all I get is a black screen with a mouse cursor, in all safe modes. Well, I decide to go to setup by pressing F2 at the Toshiba screen when you first turn it on. So, I did that and I restored the default settings, then exiting saving the settings, and then I turned it on, expecting it to work or at least have the Welcome thing. It went through the Toshiba screen, then it had a black screen for while , then I got an error message:
WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER
Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.
This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.
If you continue to recieve this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer.
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred.
So then what I did was I plugged in the charger, the mouse ( like on a desktop computer, only I stick this in my laptops usb thing) , my ipod, I put in the last cd I had in the disk drive, and I connected my computer to the modem from the other computer that I sometimes get on. It didn't do anything, it still gave me that message.
I would appreciate some help. I just got this computer in December 2009 for Christmas, and I have taken good care of it as far as I can tell. I really can't afford to replace anything right now, but if I have to I will find a way. What makes it worse is that I just got a new video game sent from my grandmother for my birthday....
Thank you for your help/thoughts/crap

it looks like a corrupted windows 7 OS or hdd issue , but you might try this one
Remove all usb devices and make sure that only ac adapter is plugged in your computer.
Turn on your computer and start tapping on F8. You should see windows advanced option when you do this.
Select on Safe Mode then Enter. If you can boot to safe mode you can try doing a system restore.
OR
On windows advance option. Select Repair my computer
Just follow the prompt and select system restore.
OR
On windows advance option. Select Repair my computer
Just follow the prompt and Windows Startup Repair

• "Inaccessible boot device" error message when I try to boot up.

Greetings, I recently upgraded to Windows 10, and I wanted to do a factory reset yesterday. I did this, and when it tried to boot up after it was finished I got the error message "Inaccessible boot device", and then my computer kept on restarting itself over and over, and never getting into the OS properly. I am using a Portege R705-P35. I tried searching for the device drivers to install on a USB and booting from this, but my computer could not boot from this properly. So i believe my problem is related to the device driver. What is the exact driver I need to boot up? I checked the Toshiba site and there was a list of about 25 drivers for my PC, and I'm not sure which would work. All help is greatly appreciated on this

I have excatly the same issue on my WT8-A. I have been running Windows 10 as an Insider for months on the device, and after RTM decided to do a full reset. I now get the same message as the OP saying "INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE" I now have an unusabe device. Please help.

• Unmountable Boot Volume error message appears

Hi.
On monday I bought Norton Internet Security 2007 and tried to install it. I was reading a word document while I was installing it. I received an error message and was asked to restart Windows XP.
When I tried to restart Windows XP. I received a message telling me there was an error that caused Windows to shut down. The message ask me to choose between:
1.safe mode
2.safe mode with command prompt
3.last know good configuration
4.start windows normally.
I choose "start windows normally"
MS Windows XP started normally for a few seconds then instead of my normally log on page I received a blue screen with this message:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
if this is the first time you have seen this error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching and shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select start up options, and then select safe mode.
Technical information:
STOP: 0x00000ED (0x80E(1E30, 0xC000031, 0X000000000) "
And the then my computer shut down and then restart in the same sequence.
IT keep repeating the sequence: error message safe mode ect ect then blue screen, shut down and restart. Again and mo matter which mode I choose. I went on online(from a borrowed computer) to research what is going on with my notebook and I still have the problem. They told me I must uninstall the software that caused the problem. My question is have can I uninstall the software when I can't reach Window's log on and hence the control panel?
I'm at my wits end. Please help.

Hi
I dont know why but it seems that your master boot sector is damage
You could try to access the repair console (boot from original windows CD and then press R)
Then try to use this command: chkdsk /p
This command should repair some sectors on the HDD. Maybe it helps.
If not then you should format the whole HDD and reinstall the OS again!

• More precise JDBC driver error messages?

Hi,
is there a way to tell the Oracle JDBC driver (9.0.2.3) to provide more detailed error messages in an SQLException message string when a table cannot be found? The usual message "Table or view does not exist" does not provide information on the actual table or view that was missing. I would like the table or view name to be included in the message provided by the SQLException.
(In general I would appreciate more detailed error information in the Oracle JDBC driver exception messages.)
Best regards Uwe

perhaps this might help:
* Get error message of an SQLException with the following form:
*

*
Code=<Vendor-specific error code>:'<error message>':SQLState=<SQLState>

*

* Note: SQLState "S1000" is returned for general errors or if driver does not support SQLState.
* @param sqlException SQLException to create error code from.
* @return Specific error message or null if sqlException not available.
public static String toString(SQLException sqlException) {
String result = null;
if (sqlException != null) {
StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
while (sqlException != null) {
sb.append("RDBMS Vendor Code ");
sb.append(sqlException.getErrorCode());
sb.append(": \"");
sb.append(sqlException.getMessage());
sb.append("\" : SQLState=");
sb.append(sqlException.getSQLState());
sqlException = sqlException.getNextException();
result = sb.toString();
}//else: input unavailable
return result;
}//toString()
* Get string representation of a SQLWarning.
* @param sqlWarning
* @return Specific error message or null if sqlWarning not available.
public static String toString(SQLWarning sqlWarning) {
String result = null;
if (sqlWarning != null) {
StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
while (sqlWarning != null) {
sb.append("errorCode=");
sb.append(sqlWarning.getErrorCode());
sb.append(", SQLState=");
sb.append(sqlWarning.getSQLState());
sb.append(",message=");
sb.append(sqlWarning.getMessage());
sb.append(",cause=");
sb.append(sqlWarning.getCause());
sb.append(";");
sqlWarning = sqlWarning.getNextWarning();
}//next subsequent warning

• Getting a "driver error" message when syncing

The trouble started when my iPod keep getting hung up on a few songs, or would only play half a song, or skip over a bunch of songs. They guy at the apple store said I should wipe it and install the latest iPod software - which is did.
At the same time I moved my iTunes and entire library from my hard drive at work to an external hard drive. Once I successfully moved iTunes and my music I tried syncing my iPod to iTunes and it uploaded about 400 songs and then I would got a message "the drive is not ready for use; it's door may be open. please check drive f: and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed" I took my iPod to the apple store and they tried it on their PC there and it worked just fine. I mentioned that I my computer was a USB1 and the apple guy said that might be the problem - so I installed a USB 2 drive on my computer, but still go the same error.
I have tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling (the suggestiong of the guy at the apple store on my second trip there) I have tried to install both my iPod and iTunes on 2 different computers (and different windows operating systems - 2000 and XP) and still get the same problem. I don't think it is the external hard drive because a colleague at work is using the same set up successfully. But just in case it was I move everything back to my hard drive and tried it again, with the same problems.
Initially I could load about 200 songs as a time before I got and error, now I can't even load 20. I have tried only putting a couple hundred of songs on my iTunes at one time and then syncing, but still the same problem.
Sorry for the long question, but I just don't know what to do next.

This is an add on to my original question.
I was prompted by iTunes to restore my iPod which I did. It seem to be working OK until I got this error message.
"Attempting to copy to the disc failed. The disk could not be read from or written to".
Any ideas?

"Unable to install the GEAR driver set at this time. The GearAspiWDM service used by the GEAR driver set is scheduled to be deleted during the next system reboot. Please reboot the system and run iTunes again."
I have followed all the instructions for completely removing iTunes and trying again. I have also tried to install the Quicktime/iTunes package. Nothing is working!! It finds my wireless router but when it starts "install drivers" I get the error message "Windows cannot install the HP Laserjet Professional M1210 MFP series fax kernel-mode print driver. To obtain a drive that is compatible with the version you are running contact the manufacturer. I am running Windows 7 on a nearly new machine so have no idea how to fix this.

Does that file (words.pdf) actually exist? If so, can you delete it, then retry?

• Moving iTunes files to external hard drive -- error message

Trying to copy iTunes files from iBook G4 to a nearly empty 320 GB FreeAgent Pro external hard drive. When I attempt to consolidate the files, I receive an error message saying "there is not enough room on external hard drive to copy files". I have a very small internal hard drive on the laptop and not very much music so the message doesn't make sense to me.
The external hard drive appears in Finder, and says the format is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Any tips on where to go from here? I'm about out of room on the laptop and desperately need to move files to an external hard drive to free up space.
Thanks,
Brendan

If you follow the steps in this article, it should work.
Just delete everything from your exHD and start over.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
Also - naming your exHD a letter far down in the alphabet is a good idea.
E: F: and G: are frequently used by other USB devices, and if your exHD letter changes, you'll get all the ! marks again.
So name it K: or Q: or W:, something another USB is unlikely to use.

• G5 iMac Optical Drive Error Messages

I'm afraid my optical drive has probably gone bad. I can burn about every third or fourth time on a variety of media. I get the following error messages in
Toast:
*The driver reported an error:*
*Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR*
*Sense CODE - 0x73, 0x03*
*Lead-in or Lead-out failed to be written.*
And, the following messages in iTunes:
*The attempt to burn disc failed. An internal error occurred.*
*The attempt to burn disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.*
Anyone have any clues as to how this may be remedied, short of a call to Applecare?
Thanks.

Ummm, you could start by posting in one of the iMac hardware forums - this area is for Mail problems.
Hope someone there can help.

• HT1178 I have failed to Map the Airport Time Capsule to my windows 7 HP laptop as a mapped drive, error message is "access denied"

I have failed to Map the Airport time capsule to my windows 7 HP laptop, i followed all the installation steps and i get the error message "Access denied, you do not have permission to access this device, contact network administrator"

Did you install the airport utility for windows?
Is the windows computer set to home as network location.. it will not work if it is set to work or public.
Is the TC setup with all SMB type names, short no spaces and pure alphanumeric. No apostrophe.
Can you ping the TC from your computer? Open a command window and type ping and the tc name or its IP.
No response you will never be able to get connection .. it is usually firewall problem. Turn off firewall and internet security.
If it pings then simply type the IP directly into explorer.. \\TCIPaddress. (eg \\10.0.1.1 if the TC is at default)
That is usually the most foolproof method.
