Boot Drive failed to be found - Question Marks ???

I recently used SuperDuper to clone my primary OSX 10.4 Tiger startup disk to a second internal hard drive in my Intel MacPro, and now I am experiencing strange behavior when booting from the Cloned drive...
To start with, let me first say that upoin successfully cloning my main OS onto the secondary internal drive, I removed my primary drive from my machine and replaced it with a cleanly formatted blank drive for data storage...in other words, there is currently only one capable startup disk in my machine at the moment...
So when running my OS from my new Clone OS drive, everything works fine when the OS is running, and things are fine and dandy...When I restart my computer, the machine loads right back up as if everything is totally normal and functioning perfect.
But then I went ahead and shutdown the machine for a short while, and upon returning and attempting to power up again, the startup process brings me to the FLASHING QUESTION MARK icon shortly after hitting the power button (as if for one reason or another, its not seeing my OS)...
The only way I can get the machine to work again, is by force-quitting the flashing question mark screen thereby powering back down; then restarting holding the 'option' key, and choosing my Clone boot drive from the list of startup discs (as it does show up as the only available drive in this list...)...Then my computer loads back up again, and things are working as normal, again, as if there were no problems...I test restarting a few times - no problem...I then re-test shutting down and powering back on again...QUESTIONS MARKS AGAIN!!
Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on, and how I should go about handling this?

Are you sure you have the startup disk set correctly in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?
If so, try zapping the PRAM. Reboot while holding down command-option-p-r. Continue holding them down until after the third startup bong, then release. After the Mac boots, try setting the prefs again and see if it sticks then.
If not, I suspect you might have a dead PRAM battery. Try shutting your Mac down, then disconnect the power cord and the internet. Reconnect the power cord but leave the internet disconnected. Boot the Mac. If your time and date is set to sometime last century, you need a new PRAM battery.

Hello,
I recently had a hard drive fail on my IMAC. The power went out in my home and knocked the computer off. When I turned it back on I go the dreaded white screen with flashing folder/Question mark.
I tried all the tricks I could find (on my other computer search) but nothing worked. I also inserted the install disk and then tried the "disk utility" ... this is where I got really scared...the utility saw my Hard Drive, but showed nothing on it with 0 space available. I thought I was fried and actually ordered a new hard drive online. (This is the second time in 3 years this has happened ... and wouldn't you know my extended warranty expired 2 weeks ago)
The next day, I think ... well, let me just try booting up to see if a miracle will happen. Low and behold it booted up! My drive is there, all my data everything! (and a new hard drive on the way overnight! lol)
So my friends, what the heck is going on? I immediately repaired permissions once I brought it up. But I'm afraid to shut the thing off now in fear it won't come back.

Assuming you have some backups:
Drive Preparation and OS X Installation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.
If the drive is not failing then the above process will find any possible bad blocks. If no bad blocks are found and the drive reformats, then reinstall OS X. If the drive does fail and you have another you can install, then try that. If this doesn't fix things then take it in for service.

I have a white intel i mac and when i boot up a file with a question mark shows up

i installed wnow leopard and then attempted to use boot camp to install windows (thats a whole other story though) after i got windows on it and then got it back to the mac side i found i could not get back to the windows side so i attemted to delete the windows partition and recreate my full mac partition (thats not as easy as i thought it would be, anyway i ended up with a partition that said it was the alloted mac partition space and another one, that apperead smaller in disk utility, that said it was 160 gb (my total disk size) while i was trying to fix that i hit the power strip switch with my foot and the whole thing shut down when it booted back up the only thing on the screen was a file with a question mark on it, i think it is just booting from the misconfigured parition but im not sure ive tried inserting my snow leopard and xp system disks but it doesnt seem to be booting from them.

At startup hold down the Option/Alt key t bring up the One time Boot Selection, Startup Manager, screen and then select the OS X install DVD. Give it about 30+ second for the DVD drive to read and display the OS X install DVD.
Then use Disk Utility to Repartition the drive as one partition and then try installing OS X.
Could be you simply killed that drive with all the new installs of OS X and then Windows and then using Disk Utility to erase the Windows partition. If that is the case you'll need to replace the drive before you'll be able to reinstall any OS on it.
In any event Never use Disk Utility to erase a Windows install. Use the Boot Camp Assistant a second tim to Remove Windows and the partition it is installed on.

Quicksilver won't boot: all I get is the question mark

I bought a Quicksilver a couple of days ago; it was running ok until today.
The problems started today; I was running Panther from drive 2, and I noticed that my Classic apps were not able to see that drive; I realised that it was using the system folder in drive 1.
I reset the Classic folder in system preferences, rebooted but the problem remained. I rebooted again, this time from drive 1 which has Tiger; now drive 2 doesn't show on the desktop, but is still visible in system prefs; I select drive 2 from OS 9 folder, and restart.
And from that point on, all I had is the flashing question mark. I tried everything: tried to start holding shift, return, X, C,zapped the PRAM, reset the PMU/cuda, took off the battery, changed drives, nada. It doesn't respond to drives, cds, etc.
I've installed drive 1 in my old Sawtooth, and I'm using it right now; although Istill can't start Classic (seems to be a language issue as my OS 9 is in french and Tiger in english), otherwise it works without a hitch.
Holding the option key gives me a blue screen with a picture of a padlock, an arrow and an input field: typing my password does nothing. I also tried opening the firmware: I get the "mac-boot" prompt all right but again, I keep being asked for a password with everything I enter, and doesn't recognize my password.
It's a dual 1 ghz QS, with drive 2 being a 400G Seagate, and drive 1 a 80G Seagate, presumably the original one. I paid 500$ for it on e-bay: seriously, have I been had?

You said you took out the battery but not if you tried installing a fresh one. Old batteries can cause strange problems and used computers may have sat around for a while before being sold, draining the battery.
If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery. It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type. Ideally this should be measured while the battery is under load; added recommendation from Hans777:
I have recently found out that an exhausted battery will still indicate >3.6 V with a high internal resistance VM.
Checking incircuit: powercord disconnected press PMU reset button for >about 5 sec before measuring.
Checking outside: load the battery with a 1500 Ohm resistor when measuring.

Boot drive failed; external backup drive not being seen

I've had a Windows Server 2012 Essentials machine (6 drives + 1 external USB 3TB dedicated backup) running fine for over a year now. The system backup was configured through the Essentials Dashboard, the backup drive was found automatically by
Windows without any custom drivers, and was successfully backing up as scheduled. A few days ago, the server rebooted for an update, and started blue-screening early on during the boot. Using the install media, I went to the restore facility, but
the dedicated external USB backup drive isn't being found (the restore list is empty). I tried using other USB ports (they all work, as tested with the keyboard), but the backups on it still aren't showing. Moving the backup drive to a nearby Windows
8.1 machine, it shows up correctly in the Disk Manager (the name is correct; no drive letter assigned, as expected). From the system-recovery command-line on the server, wbadmin get drives show it, but as [not mounted].
What should my next steps be? Is it safe to mount it to a drive letter on the Windows 8.1 machine and share it out, or will that irreparably damage the backups? Is there something obvious I'm missing? Why isn't the Windows Server 2012 Essentials
install media's repair functionality finding it (this should be a no-brainer, right?)?
The drive in question is a Seagate model SRD00F2.

1. What updates has been installed. See info in WindowsUpdate.log.
2. Hope you has not installed optional drivers. It this is true try to return back or reinstall drivers from server vendor support page (perhaps support for USB 3)

The reboot was overnight (about 4am) on Sunday, 2014-04-13. It was for the latest updates from Microsoft at that time (so the prior Tuesday's batch; see below for the details from WindowsUpdate.log).
No optional drivers installed, other than the motherboard ones at initial system load. They've been running great for a year or so now. They weren't part of the update.
Not possible to check. Trying to boot into safe mode also blue screens fairly early on during boot (about 15-20 seconds; same error). Boot logging never generates a log because it doesn't get far enough to dump to disk.

Hard Drive Failure (Flashing folder with question mark!)

After reading some of the topics on the forum, I know that the flashing folder with the question mark that I get when I try to turn on my Macbook is hard drive failure. I know to fix it that I need to Boot with the Installer Disk in the Drive, holding down The C key. But, will doing this destroy all of my pictures and other content? My pictures are really important and I dont want to lose them and I never backed them up ( dumb move, I know!).

There are two basic possibilities when you get the flashing ? : 1) the hard drive is physically damaged or dead and 2) the hard drive has data errors
When you attempt to boot up with the system disks and then switch to Disk Utilities, the first thing to look for is if the program sees your drive. If it doesn't the drive is almost certainly dead and getting data from it will be costly. If the program does see the drive you'll want to attempt to repair it - press the repair button. If the repair fails, another repair utility may be able to repair the damage, at least well enough to get your data off. That program is DiskWarrior. If the repair succeeds the computer probably will need to have the OS reinstalled - my experience is about 90% of the time the repair fixed the drive but left the OS damaged.
When you reinstall the OS select options on the first screen beyond the language selection screen. Here you can (hopefully) select Archive and Install. This option will install a new operating system but leave the programs and data unchanged.
<short lecture on>As you've learned, it isn't if your drive sill sometime fail, it is when. Hard drives are relatively inexpensive. Buy one and backup your drive at least weekly. At the very least purchase a flash drive large enough to copy your very very important data and burn a DVD every week or month.<short lecture off>

Macbook freezes at boot up ~ just shows folder with question mark :(

We purchased a second hand Macbook. Unfortunately, that means no install disks. I'm hoping someone can help me with the following issue.
The laptop freezes during boot up and won't turn on. A white screen comes up. It has a grey folder with a question mark. Tried rebooting several times with no luck. I found the reset instructions (Press the control key, the command key, and the power button simultaneously and hold for three seconds to try to restart the computer). When we tried that, the computer makes a loud beep, then freezes again on the white screen.
Any ideas? I don't know what to do at this point! Would buying upgrade disks help at all?

Hi Kandye,
the seller should have provided the OSX installation disc together with the MacBook.
Since these are machine-specific discs there isn't much he can do with them without the MacBook.
Can you ask him if yhe simply forgot to send them ?
Anyway, the question mark indicates that the MacBook can not find an OSX on the internal harddisk to boot from.
Whether the harddisk is just completely empty or this is a hardware problem is difficult to diagnose without the OSX discs.
It is possible to go out and buy yourself some OSX installation discs for either Leopard or Snow Leopard, but if not upgraded the standard size of RAM memory (512KB) is too small for either off them.
OSX Tiger discs for an Intel-based MAc are nowhere to be found except Apple themselves (if they still have some...).

Hard drive crash? Folder with question mark

Hi everyone! I had problems with my macbook pro (early 2013). Last week, it slowed down suddenly and the laptop heats up during sleep. Then the hard drive recently crashed, at least I thought it crashed after it showed the folder with question mark during startup and did not show my old hard disk drive. Now I bought a 1TB WD mainstream hard drive disk, unfortunately it does not detect it in the internet recovery (disk utility). Now my question is, Do I have to do something with the hard drive first for my laptop to detect it? Like formatting it? The box said that it is compatible with mac OSx Lion, but my internet recovery lets me install Mountain Lion only. Is that the problem? or is the problem internal like the cable that connects the hard drive to the logic board?

That depends on the type of drive you have. If it is a standard external drive (in an enclosure) you can connect the drive with a USB cable.
If it is a bare drive like this:

G4 Won't Boot Up and Shows The Flashing Question Mark Folder Thing

Ok so I bought a Quicksilver G4 from this guy and he said that he took is info off it and now it won't boot up. So I have a Tiger Disk and I tried the to boot from the disk by pushing C down while it was booting and it still goes to that Flashing Question Mark and Folder thing. What should I do? Should I take it in or is there something I can do without taking it in?

Hi! It should boot from the install disc by holding down the "c" key at startup with the disc already inserted as long as it's a retail disc and not one for another model of computer. If it won't boot from a retail install disc then you have hardware problems. Tom

IMac won't boot and has flashing folder with question mark on gray screen

I just bought a new iMac. I have been trying all week (with no success) to transfer files and apps from my previous iMac. The last time I tried to transfer, I used target mode on the old computer. It looked as if it was finally working, so I left with 2+ hours remaining on the transfer. When I returned, the computer was frozen and nothing would work. So I held the power button to turn it off. When I tried to turn it back on, there was only a gray screen with a flashing folder with a question mark. I feel like I have tried everything listed in other discussions. The only thing I am not able to try is to reinstall Lion because the new computer did NOT come with an OSX disc of any type. Any suggestions?

Macbook will not boot. An icon with a question mark in a shape of a file apears after a long delay. I am accessing network on another Mac. Any suggestions for booting would be welcome.

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

After reformatting drive - folder with question mark appear

I was planning to reformat it and install the OS Maverick from my drive but after formatting (which delete all the files from it's hard drive) after restarting a blinking question mark appears

Sudden SSD un-recognition + blinking question marked folder

Dear all,
i've got a pretty strange behaviour here.
my late 2011 MacBook Pro won't boot my SSD disk (Samsung 840 Evo 750gb) anymore. restarting or powering off/on the mac will always result in no disk found (question marked blinking folder).
please note that the case is "no disk found" and not "no partitions found" as the disk recovery tool doesn't even recognise the disk (it only sees a remote disk - i.e. Internet recovery).
funny things:
1) on an earlier white MacBook, the same disk boots just fine (-> the disk is not broken + data is not corrupted + partitions seem just fine)
2) on my (currently failing) late 2011 MacBook Pro boots just fine an old hdd 5400 rpm (-> my mobo doesn't seem corrupted (?))
3) on my (currently failing) late 2011 MacBook Pro a smaller version of my 750 gb disk - i.e. the Samsung 840 Evo 250gb - doesn't boot and is not recognised by disk recovery, too. (-> it seems that only SSDs are not correctly recognised)
4) all three disks (the two SSDs and the 5400rpm HDD) just work fine on the old MacBook.
things I did:
1)NVRAM+PRAM reset,
2)disk and RAM unplug&re-plug,
3)reinstall osx mt.lion on 5400 rpm hdd when inserted in my late 2011 machine, hoping it would also set some magic flag on the mobo
4)successfully booted all disks on different machine.
I'd like to stress out how the disk has been working just fine since oct'13, and that I didn't do anything other than the usual turn-off procedure to trigger this behaviour.
anybody with similar experience or specific - and much appreciated - suggestions?

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, the tool says that no disk is present in the machine (which is coherent with what disk utils says).
However, I don't really understand why everything was right till two days ago and now, out of the blue, the disk is not recognised at all... Even though I know it works well as it correctly boots on an older MacBook.
any other idea?

Mac Mini folder with question mark at startup the shuts off

I have a 2006 mac mini that is booting up with the folder and question mark symbol and then it automatically shuts off after a few moments. It won't allow me to boot from startup disk. When I hold down the C key the disk utility does not load and then I see the folder and question mark. When I startup holding down the Option key, I do not see the disk as a drive--either way it shuts off pretty quick. I have tried about everything and am out of ideas. I know I need to probably reinstall the OS but I do not have another Mac to run target disk mode....Any ideas?

New iMac, startup failure, question mark: TH00-9.000 TH0O-9.000

My new alu iMac worked for 3 weeks. Today it suddenly crashed. Now the boot process stops with a flashing question mark.
Disk Repair didn't find any harddisks to repair.
System Profiler stated "There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices."
AHT reports the following error code: 4sns/1/40000000: TH00-9.000 harddisk failure.
The error appears during (or after) the main logic board test while the fans spin up.
Looking closely the space between the zeros in TH00 is significantly smaller. So maybe it's not a zero but an upper case O.

My guess is the internal HD has crashed, this of course would be covered by your 1 year warranty so you should contact Apple immediately for repair. Please remember hard drives are not made by Apple and they do fail. Some last weeks some last 10 years, unfortunately they are very unpredictable. While this is frustrating this is why you have a warranty. If you have been using Time Machine then once the internal drive has been replaced restoring will be painless with TM.
If you have added an external HD or have a flash drive inserted in one of the USB slots that can confuse the machine so it doesn't know where the startup volume is. Try re-starting by holding down the Option key, if the machine sees start up disks it will highlight them, then choose the internal HD. Once the machine has started then go to System Preferences-Startup Disk and select the internal disk.
If that doesn't work please post back and let us know what happened. BTW you don't state where you are located but you may be covered by AppleCare. Look in your owners manual for the phone number in your area and contact Apple, you have 90 days of free telephone support.
