Boot failed: press a key to retry... when installing ESXi ISO

After troubleshooting an issue from an already open question, a new issue has arisen.  I am opening a separate question as this problem is new and I figured a new question should be asked about it.
Following the instructions from this question, I re-acknowledged my blade twice.  Upon looking at the KVM I saw a no boot device message, which was to be expected.  I proceeded to re-install ESXi 5.5 (which was already installed on this SD card prior to the open question) and I am now met with the following message:
isolinux: Disk error 20, AX = 422D, drive EF
I have rebooted the blade several times to re-try the installation to no success.  I even went back to an ESXi 5.1 ISO, which did not yield any better results.
The ISOs that I am using are the UCS VMware ISOs downloaded directly from VMware.

Joseph,
You mentioned in the previous thread that the firmware you are running is 2.2(1d), is that the firmware of UCSM only?  Please let us know what version of CIMC, BIOS, Adapter you are running and the blade hardware model.
Also, did you get your ESXi 5.5 image from here: https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?productId=353&downloadGroup=OEM-ESXI55GA-CISCO ?  If not, please download that one and try to install it and let us know about the outcome, please.

  • Satellite C650D-12C No bootable device - Insert boot disk & press any key

    Hi,
I have a C650D that was working fine up to a week ago.
It shut down ok, but refused to start up on the next boot.
It comes up saying 'No bootable device -- Insert boot disk & press any key'.
So I stuck in a bootable recovery dvd and the same thing came up, but although the dvd drive 'twitched' when I inserted the disk, it didn't seem to look at it at all when I rebooted.
I rebooted again & pressed F12 to check the boot order. 1st is usb, then cd/dvd, lan, fdd, then hdd/ssd.
I selected cd/dvd and after a few seconds' wait it said 'A disk read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart.
Both the harddrive & the dvd drive show up correctly in the bios.
I plugged in a usb dvd drive, put in a recovery cd, rebooted & it started to boot from the usb drive, but then stopped doing anything after the first bit of info came up on the screen.
I tried several bootable cds and they all do the same. They start booting, then freeze. For example, if I put in an XP install disk I get - 'Press any key to boot from cd drive' (the usb one), then 'Setup is inspecting your hardware', then a black screen.
I've tried changing anything that might help in the bios, SATA controller mode, for example, but nothing has any effect on the situation.
    Any ideas anyone please?
    Many thanks.
    EDIT:
I just tried booting from the usb drive with the harddrive removed from the system and the boot process continues normally. If I try & boot from the internal dvd drive though it still fails to see any disk.........

    > I just tried booting from the usb drive with the harddrive removed from the system and the boot process continues normally. If I try & boot from the internal dvd drive though it still fails to see any disk.........
Does this mean that if you remove the HDD you can boot from the USB flash drive, but you cannot boot from CD/DVD drive even if the HDD is removed?
It sounds really strange but I think this would mean that either the SATA controller on the motherboard is faulty and therefore its not possible to boot from HDD or CD/DVD drive. Or it could be also possible that HDD and ODD malfunctions. But it would be really strange that both devices would start to malfunction at the same time
So possibly the second idea is not true however, this would mean that something happened to the motherboard.
But try this: access the BIOS pressing F2 at the beginning. Now set it to default settings pressing F9 and then save the changes pressing F10.
Now try to boot again using an Recovery disk

  • Boot camp not recognize keyboard and mouse when installing windows 7 pro 64 bit

    Hi,
I have some issue when installing windows 7 pro 64 bit using boot camp. after done partitioning the windows drive and when boot to windows installation process, i've got stuck in the first screen when choosing the language. it seems that the keyboard and mouse are not detected.
i'm using boot camp ver. 5.0.
does anyone have similar problem with me?

I have finally successfully installed Windows 7 x64 on MacBook Air 13.3" (2013) thru Bootcamp.
Problem:  After Windows 7 install thru BootCamp, I got to the first login screen and not input devices (Mouse, keyboard, USB) worked.   I tried to boot into Windows Safemode, but I received the error  "Windows can not complete installation in Safe Mode".
Cause:  WIndows 7 does not have native USB 3.0 drivers, included on the install images.
Resolution:  I downloaded the latest device drivers with thru BootCamp and copied them to the USB Flash Drive that had my bootable Windows 7 x64 install on it.  The second option in BootCamp is "Download Support Media".  This does more than just download drivers.  It creates a file called "autoattended.xml".  This is key as it tells Windows during the install process to use the device drivers that you download.  Otherwise, you need to do it manually, which you can't because you have no mouse or keyboard.
NOTE:  I had no need of a super drive because I had all the files on one USB flash drive.  Therefore, I don't think it matter which side of the MBA the USB drive was plugged in, as other solutions suggested.

    I'm confused
I took this to mean that your DID have an install disk.
By holding down the "C" key, you are booting to the install CD.
Alternatively, you can hold down the "option" key, to select which drive to which you want to boot.

  • My midi keyboard is playing multiple sounds when I press a key. Like when I play a note on the piano preset, there is a snare hit or a shaker that plays along withe the note. Is there a setting I need to change to get rid of it?

this recently happened, never had the problem before. I've restored my midi keyboard to factory settings but the problem persists. I go into garage band and click on the piano preset, but when I play a note it plays multiple instruments. Say I hit the C note On my keyboard, it plays the C note, but along with it is a snare hit or a shaker. And this is for every note. It seems as though the keyboard has its own setting, but I've tried resetting it. Again it's never happens before, just recently is there a way to get rid of that background sound? It's very dufficu to make music with multiple instruments playing in one note!

If it happens again the make sure that you aren't suppressing website colors.

  • Trying to Install Windows 7 onto MBP Mid-2010 but I get this "No bootable device -- Insert boot disk and press any key". What do I do?

I'm trying to install Windows 7 onto my MacBook Pro Mid-2010 (MacBookPro6,2) from a USB drive, since my Super Drive no longer will burn DVDs or CDs. I did the XCODE trick to allow me to make the bootable USB. But when it reboots after partitioning I get this, "No bootable device -- Insert boot disk and press any key" message. When I press a key after reinserting the USB it still won't boot after pressing a key. I unplugged anything connected to it and it still doesn't work. Is there any way I can get it to be recongized or do I just need to get an external disc drive and burn a disc that way?

If your computer came with an inetrnal optical drive, you must use that to install Windows.

  • When installing a new hard drive?

I'm considering buying a SDD hard drive for my Macbook Pro. But I'm not sure what to do after inserting the drive, or before for that matter. I know how to physically put it in, but beyond that I'm not sure.
I have Mavericks, and I don't have a disc with Mavericks, but I'm told I can make a boot disc with DiskMaker X. So, that's what I'm planning to do.
I also have a lot on my drive and I don't want to lose it. If I use TimeMachine take copy of the complete hard drive, can I simply just install Mavericks from the boot disc I made and then drag the content from my TimeMachine drive to my new SDD and I have the exact same content on my new SDD which was on my old drive?
I have plugins for Elements, FCPX and Logic Pro I don't want to lose. Do I have to install all these plugins once more after installing a new hard drive.
How about Office? With the version I have, I'm only allowed to register one Office. Will my product key be removed when installing a new HDD so I'm able to register it once more?

One does not simply drag content from Time Machine to a new drive. Unlike a cloning utility, Time Machine doesn't store files exactly like they are on the desktop, partly because it tracks multiple versions of each file. While you could restore your system to the SSD from your Time Machine backup, you will need to start up off the OS X boot disc and there will be a utility command on it that will let you Restore from Time Machine. Choose that command and select the new, blank SSD as the target and select your last Time Machine backup date as the source, and run it. It will take a while (possibly a couple hours) for Time Machine to reassemble the last backup from the pile of file versions in Time Machine.
If you wanted to do a straight copy from a backup to the new blank SSD, that is why you will get advice to use a cloning utility instead. If you clone your system to another drive, not only can it be bootable from that disk, you can clone it back to any other drive (like a new one), and it works right away because it really is an exact copy of your files and folders (no waiting to reassemble the system like Time Machine).
Whether you do it with Time Machine or a cloning utility, one way you can never do this is to restore an entire system disk simply by dragging files over. There are too many hidden files, too many files with special permissions and attributes that will not be preserved if you just drag them.
Also, it may not be necessary to have an external enclosure to make a clone. You can also use a drive dock or universal drive cable. But you'll probably want an enclosure anyway, as a place to keep the old drive.

There is no clear answer on the plug-ins. It depends on the mechanism each plugin company uses to register/authorize their plugin. If a company uses hidden files buried in the system to verify a license, that hidden file might not be present in the new system. Or they might invalidate a license if new hardware is detected. You can just bring the plugins to the new system and see, and if they work the don't worry about it, but there is a possibility that at least some may need to be restored.
I have heard of stories that Microsoft Office may be a problem, but maybe they've improved it. When the current version of Office came out apparently some people had trouble getting it authorized on a new machine or disk due to the way activation limits were implemented. There is a possibility that you may have to get on the phone with Microsoft and sort it out.

  • HP Pavilion g6-2330dx. "No Boot Device. Insert boot disk and press any key" Memory test failed

Hi. So I am trying to help a friend with her laptop. It's a HP Pavilion g6-2330dx.
    Product #: D1C01UA#ABA
    Serial #: [Personal Information Removed]
    Windows 8
    ADATA 4GB RAM
Toshiba 640GB HDD from the looks of it.
The laptop is unable to boot into Windows, so I suspect the hard drive. But I ran the hard drive test and it passed all the tests. The SMART test and both the short and long test. I ran the tests multiple times and it passed each time. I tried reseating the hard drive and still no go. I also removed the HDD and connected it to my desktop PC to see if it detects and it did. Ran the Windows 7 own HDD test and it passed.
Currently, there doesnt seem to be any operating system at all on the HDD. When I check, there is a C: drive of ~90GB partition that is ~90GB free, but inside there are Windows files/folders. There is also a D: drive Recovery partition that says ~26GB with only ~2GB free, but when I go inside there's only ~350MB worth of data.
So then I ran the memory test (in BIOS) and it failed immediately. I reseated the RAM module. I tried the other slot. It still failed. So is it safe to say the memory is the cause of this problem?
Pressing the F11 key that is supposed to take me to the System Recovery only leads me back to the black screen with "No Boot Device. Insert boot disk and press any key"
I even tried to install Windows 7 to see if it'll work. I was able to get the laptop to boot/read off the Windows 7. But when I click to install, it asks for a boot device driver or something like that.
My friend doesn't have the recovery disk either. I guess she lost it.
Anyway, is it as simple as replacing the memory or could it actually be the HDD (even though it passes)?
EDIT: This is what the System Log in BIOS says
    0021           Time: 10/13/2014
    03F0           Time: 10/13/2014
    03F0           Time: 10/13/2014
The date was the first time I ran the tests. I havent received those numbers (error codes?) since.
EDIT: Just for kicks, I ran Memtest 2.11 just now (forgot I had the disc) and it immediately went red with thousands of errors, hah.

    Hi bghs,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a fantastic place to find answers and information.
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I understand that you were unable to boot into Windows,  and you suspected the hard drive and tested it, but it passed both short and long test.  With that being said and the fact that it also passed  leads me to believe the hard drive is fine.
You tested the memory and it failed.  You tried reseating and swapping slots but they  still failed the test.
I would test each card individual with the memtest to determine if it is just one or both cards that have an issue.
When you installed it in another computer, you did see the recovery partition.  Once the memory issue is resolved, if you are still unable to boot into Windows, I suggest you do a recovery with the minimized image.   Here is a link to Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8) to assist you with that process.
    I hope this helps.

    Hi LamboMong,
    just try this:
    http://refit.sourceforge.net
install, reboot twice and choose the Windows-Partition on next startup.
(The apple-bootloader doesn't display all bootable harddisks.
With rEFIt you can boot from all partitions/harddisks on your computer.)
I hope that will solve your problem.

When I turn on my iMac, it shows a black screen and says 'No bootable device - enter boot cd and press any key'.
I'm not sure what to do, I did not recieve a cd with my mac to boot it up (I ordered it online).
Also I can't find my harware serial number (I've tried many times to input what I thought it may be from my receipt).  I saw that I need this number to contact apple support, my 90 day complimentary support is still valid so I wish to contact them.
I don't know much about apple products as this is my first apple computer so any information is helpful.

Hold down the Alt/Option-key at startup of your iMac to get the Boot Selection screen.
From that choose to boot into OSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and reset your OSX to be the default.
The new iMacs have OSX 10.7 Lion preinstalled and don't come with any CD/DVD anymore.
Instead OSX Lion includes a new feature called "Lion Recovery".

  • Recovery fail - "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

    Hello,
I have a problem with Recovery. I don't have recovery dvd/cd so I decided to use recovery partition. After system reboot I press F11 and click on recovery system. After 100% of progress, recovery tells me something like 'now your system will reboot press continue'. And now. After system reboot I see:
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
I have totally no idea what to do. I read few posts on this forum but I have no Windows 7 CD/DVD and I have no one who can borrow me to install it. I really need my computer back in few hours to work.
    Looking for help from You.
My computer: HP Pavilion dv7-6b40ew, Windows 7 Home Premium

    Hi,
Assuming this is just a problem with the recovery media, here's an alternative option you could try.
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
An example of a COA Label can be seen Here.
You can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the exact same version that originally came with your notebook ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.
    http://www.kodyaz.com/articles/how-to-activate-windows-7-by-phone.aspx
Any additional drivers and software you may need can be found Here.
