Boot failure on G5 - how to change startup?
I added a new drive to dual processor powerpc g5 running os10.5.6. It worked fine.
I changed the startup to old disk, OS 10.5 boot disk and back to new disk 6-8 times and no problem.
Last night I changed startup to old disk, rebooted and no go.
I get a gray screen (no apple logo), then a blue/green screen (my background color) and there it stalls.
I've tried rebooting with the OS boot disk but it doesn't override startup preference.
Tried the option key after the reboot fanfare, also tried it as soon as reboot stops. Neither work.
I tried doing all of the above after machine had been shut down overnight.
Still doesn't work.
What now?
First, thanks for your help. Whatever the outcome. Now on to the specifics:
Didn't work -- Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup).
Didn't work -- Command+Shift+Option+Delete bypasses the disk selected in the Startup Disk control panel in favor of an external device or from CD-ROM.
I don't have an bootable disk/external device, but I do have the OSX/Leopard boot disk in the superdrive.
Didn't work -- Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
I did go to the provided URL and went through the steps a couple of times.
But I'm thinking the reset would set the startup to the original HD, which is the one I'm having trouble with.
Is it a Wireless or USB Keyboard? It's a USB Keyboard with a wireless mouse.
Would this work? Turn it all off, remove the original HD, and Would I need to put the second/new HD in its place? Or just remove the original and would the boot up process automatically roll over to the new HD? Or just hang in its everlasting search for the old HD?
I had backed up everything from it except some movie clips, including some of my husband before he got sick. I'd really just like to get those clips off and the rest of it can all go to Jupiter.

Hi,
I have a Mac-mini (late 2012 model), originally with Mac OS X Maverick Server installed (with two HDD). Recently, I had clean installed Windows 8.1 on one of the HDD (worked perfectly, just slow) and swapped the other HDD (with Mac OSX) with a SSD. I then cloned the Windows OS HDD in to the new SSD. Now I am trying to boot this Mac mini from this SSD, however, since this Mac mini do not have BIOS for me to change the boot sequence at the startup, is there any one can help?
Thank you,

Restart your computer
After Windows is installed, you can switch between OS X and Windows. Use the Startup Disk preference pane in OS X, or the Boot Camp system tray item in Windows to select your startup disk, then restart your computer

This might be a silly question, but how can you change the volume of the signature start up sound on the new iMac?
The startup sound uses the volume setting of the built-in speakers. So if you do not have external speakers connected, adjust the volume of the built-in speakers and that will change the volume of the startup sound.
If you have external speakers connected, Mac OS X maintains separate sound volume settings for the built-in speakers and "headphones" (used by the external speakers). So you can disconnect the external speakers, adjust the sound volume of the built-in speakers, and reconnect the external speakers. The external speakers will still use its own sound volume. However, the startup sound always comes from the built-in speakers, so that separate volume setting will be used. -
How to change startup programs
Every time i start excell opens up how do i change this?
Two possible reasons come to mind:
1. When you shut down, you may have "Reopen windows when logging back in" checked. That would do it.
2. Check System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items -
C3 - How to change startup profile?
My C3 phone has suddently taken to starting up with the Silent profile selected. This is a pain because I keep missing calls but cannot find a way to make the general profile the default.
Does anyone know the solution?
I'm sure it must be something easy but I can't find it in the manual. :-(
Alan G.Select Menu > Settings > Profiles.
Select the desired profile and from the
following:
Activate — Activate the profile.
Personalise — Modify the profile
settings.
Timed — Set the profile to be active until
a certain time. When the time set for the
profile expires, the previous profile that
was not timed becomes active.
If i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.

There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.

I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays. -
How to change number of retries and delay before retrying after software install failure
I deploy a software to client, but the installation is fail, so it will retry. but How to change the number of retries and delay before retrying after software install failure?
I find "Retry Settings" in "Software Distribution Component Properties". But I think it work for Distribution, not the installation. am I right?First, are you referring to packages or applications because the behavior is different.
Also, why do you want it to retry a failure? It failed for a reason so you need to fix the cause of the failure first. If it failed the first, it will likely fail the next time for the same reason. In general, ConfigMgr will only retry on transient type
errors.

so my ibook as i wrote will not boot from the cd rom. it always wants to boot from the hd but i had the hd wiped b/c it had linux and it would not allow me to access the firmware. now that the hd is clean i was able to access the firmware but i dont know how to change the boot sequence. the starts to spin in the drive and acts like it want to boot from the cd but the cd just keeps spinning and i get a screen with a blinking question mark and smiley face.
Hello and welcome to the support community.
Why do you need to go into the firmware?
If the disk is a boot disk like Mac OS X, then all you need to do is hold down 'C' key or the option key while the disk is in the drive and the iBook is booting up (After the chime)
If either doesn't work, then there must be an issue with the disk not being a boot disk or corrupted. Alternatively a problem with the optical drive. You don't need to go into the firmware to change any boot selection.
Hope this helps -
K8N Neo4 - Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk
Hello !
Up an runnung with my new MoBo - for details se below, thats good. But...
No matter how I change my BIOS settings, at startup I got the same message:
Boot from CD : Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
When doing so, the PC is booting OK.
Quit annoying, so glad for any hint !
Greetings / Jan BjörkThanks TheBigMan for your welcome message !
Glad the join the Forum, it´s great knowledgebase !
I´ve gone through the BIOS settings you are referring to. They are like this: (And have been so all the time)
1:st Boot device [Harddisk]
Hard Disk Priority [SCSI:0 Nvidia Mirror 115.03G]
So there must be something else, thanks anyhow !
I also wonder from where this message, "Boot from CD..etc", is coming, is it really from the BIOS ?
Greetings / Jan Björk -
I Downloaded the Yosemite upgrade and went to install it on my iMac. The install failed saying file System needed repair. Ran disk utility could do the verify but the repair button was grayed out. When I tried to change startup disk back it wouldn't let me , saying it couldn't gather enough file info. So I'm stuck and can't boot my Mac. How do I get out of this?
Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Try to reboot normally.

Sudden total boot failure. Any idea what would cause this??
Today I was adding more apps to my clean install (on an external drive) and I had to go back to my original "update" installation to get a password off Keychain (I did not migrate). After I got the pw, I shutdown and my Powerbook would not reboot! I got the chime and then utter blackness. No disk access was attempted on my external, nothing from internal drive, and still nothing when I tried the Leopard installation DVD.
I kept trying and finally (after 10-15 minutes of getting nothing except the initial startup sound) the screen lit up and I got to the Startup Manager disk selection. I was still unable to boot from the DVD; the boot sequence had progressed only part way and then totally stalled (I gave it about 3 times as long as it would normally take to boot from a CD or DVD). I tried this twice more so I thought I had suffered catastrophic hardware failure.
But, then, after a pram reset, I was able to restart into single-user mode and did a couple of the fsck's (file-system check in Unix) and it said the internal disk was OK both times. Got through login and to the Finder Desktop after a regular boot, and after a safe boot, but found that the Finder was corrupted and repeatedly crashed with almost everything I tried to do.
Reluctantly then tried to boot from external drive and found that - it worked!
Tried to fix internal drive unsuccessfully. Eventually found that DVD drive was working again too, so I did a Time Machine restore of the internal drive after booting from the Leopard install disk.
After getting the internal drive to boot again (Time Machine worked!!), the Wacom tablet driver immediately crashed (even though I had supposedly loaded a Leopard-compatible version), so I then went to Terminal and got rid of all the StartupItems and PreferencePanes in the root Library and my user Library. I tried rebooting and since it did so without issue this time, I hooked up Time Machine and made a new backup.
How did the total boot failure get caused? I had never seen anything like this before where the screen stayed totally black and not even the DVD would boot.
I am now back to "normal" after 7 hours. Moral of the story is that even when your computer looks completely dead, keep trying. I just hope it doesn't happen again, since I'm not sure what the issue was.Faulty battery. Make Genius reservation and take this iPhone back.

DISK BOOT FAILURE: PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK....
Hi
I have exhausted two full days on the following problem so I would greatly appreciate some help. The problem I am experiencing is that the disk will not boot on its own. I receive the "DISK BOOT FAILURE: PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK...." error when starting up. I have run chkdsk, i have run Western Digital Diagnostics for Dos (quick test) and no problems come up with the drive. I have also jumpered pins 5 and 6 to force the drive to run at SATA-I speeds. Now here's the curious part: The disk boots up and functions absolutely perfectly IF and ONLY IF, the bios is set to boot from my IDE drive. Now on the IDE drive I have a boot.ini file set up to allow me to boot the SATA drive instead. Using this work around (i.e. boot from IDE, select SATA drive from boot menu) the drive seems to work just fine. However if i change the bios back to boot from the SATA drive (and therefore use its own boot.ini) I receive the error again and the boot will not continue.
Here is my set up:
MSI K8T Neo2-F v2.0 motherboard (with latest BIOS).
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ dual core CPU
1024GB DDR 400 RAM
1 Western Digital 120GB IDE HD running on primary master.
1 Pioneer DVD-108 DVD-RW running on secondary master.
1 Western Digital 250GB (WD2500KS) running on SATA1.
Nividia GeForce 6800 running on AGP.
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS PCI
Originally the system was as above without the new WD2500KS drive. I then bought the new SATA drive and installed windows to it with the intention of clearing windows from the original IDE and making it a storage drive. The above workaround is how I completed installation of Windows XP and installed my other programs, otherwise when rebooting during installation the disk would fail again.
Another issue is that Windows will NOT designate the SATA as drive C. When disconnecting the IDE, the SATA will become "c:" but as soon as the IDE is plugged back in, it immediately claims "c:" again and the SATA becomes "d:". This is ascertained from running the Recovery Console and using 'map' for example. It is important that I get this to "c:" as I have programs which appear to look for files by an absolute path and will not find them on "d:".
I have also tried to 'fixmbr' and this is the only time I have seen any curious message. Using the workaround the disk works fine. But when I tried to 'fixmbr', the system warned that the disk had a non-standard boot record (or something to that effect). But in any case, boot seems fine so long as we're not booting it directly.
Finally, I should confirm that the BIOS is set to run the SATA in IDE mode and not SATA (although as a sanity check I have run it in RAID and the result is the same).
I have no idea at this stage whether the problem lies with the SATA drive or the motherboard. I have sent a copy of this to WD "for further troubleshooting", and am posting a copy here for any advice on the mobo side of things.
Many thanksThank you for your reply. You are right, I've just resolved the problem today and discovered that this was the case.
To close the topic and leave advice for anyone else facing similar difficulties I will sum up the progress since the initial post.
Having tried absolutely everything else, I thought "what happens if i make this sata c:?" so I decided to edit the registry and force a drive letter change to ensure that my SATA was "c:". After having done this the SATA for the first time successfully booted to the boot menu! However when loading up into Windows it kept hanging. So next I thought all I need to do is a repair install now, I disconnected the IDE to leave the SATA only and attempted this. Unfortunatley the repair install also kept hanging. The Microsoft support page detailing how to force the drive letter change does warn that doing so can mess everything up unless the problem occurred in some specific circumstances.
So a new install was in order. I hooked up the IDE again and booted from it, backed up all my files to the IDE, and then disconnected it again. Then booted from a Western Digital diagnostics disk and zero filled the SATA - this was more for my own sanity so as not to worry about dodgy MBR's and what not. Then booted from WINXP CD and formatted and reinstalled fresh.
Install was successful.
Hooked up IDE externally to dump back my backed up files. Then deleted the IDE's partition and formatted it. Powered down, connected the IDE internally again - booted from SATA successfully (now on c:)... the IDE was no longer recognised as a "system" disk in Disk Manager, so I gave it a drive letter and hey presto we're business again!! One SATA system disk on drive c: and one IDE storage drive!
SHORT VERSION: If you are adding an SATA drive to an IDE set up, and want the SATA to be your OS disk, unhook all the IDE's first... if the target drive is not in isolation when installing Windows, all kinds of problems can ensue which are very difficult to correct after the install. -
How to change CUE ip address?
Hi,
We moved to a new location and using comcast as ISP. I was setting up the phone system today and met a few problems.
1. First of all, all the phones are connected and working(total of 4), but I can only see 3 of them showing up in the CCA. Whats happening here?
2. I wanted to change the user name which appears on the phone using the CCA, CCA told me that the settings were successfully sent to UC520, I restarted the phone and uc520, but the names on the phones remain unchanged?
3. I forgot the password of the voicemail for one of the phone, and wanted to changed in the CUE. so I went to 10.1.10.1,but some comcast login page showed up instead of CUE. so I want to know how to change the IP address of CUE? I don`t know the CLI commands so please teach me if it can only be done with CLI. I have only used CCA in the past. Could this be the reason why for problem 1 and 2? I`m feeling wierd because all the phones can be used to call in/out.
my data vlan is 192.168.0.0 and voice vlan is 192.168.2.0 let me know if you need any other info.
need help urgently as I want to resolve this problem asap.
Thanks in advance.
