Boot Freeze When overclocked w/ SATA drive

I just installed xp pro on 36 gig Raptor on sata 1  when i o/c i get a freeze at boot screen or dmi update sucess or it says ctrl alt del to restart read disc error.  I can run a stable overclock when it was just my ata drive @ 2.59 mhz on air cooling,  boot up just fine, but when i boot from an o/c with the sata drive connected i get the errors or freezes,  i can boot a default setting and have core center overclock to 2.39 mhz but that is it.  I am discouraged.  Can anyone help?
64 3200 moble
k8v neo platinium bios 1.3
1 gig pc3200 Centon mem w/ laxed timmings  - 2 sticks matched
1 x sata wd raptor 36 g
1 x maxtor 60g 7200rpm
5950 ultra Leadteck @ 571mhz/1000mhz @ 1.7v
nu tech 8x dvd burner
450w psu w/ x-blade case -- rails r stable

Thanks guys that worked!  Now i have to get my bench marks back up there with the overclocking, although i could overclock higher on the ide vs sata but 100 mhz does bother me, its stable at 2.48 ghz, so i am happy bench marking better than fx-53 and 3800 in cpu scores, i got a 10000 in sisandra so i am happy.
again thanks
i was pissed.

Before is ok, can't remember when this problem show up.
Don't know where to go, please give me a hint.
You have to give us a hint.
    What is your processor?
    How much RAM have you?
What is your video card/ship set?
    What kernel are you running?
I spotted this in your dump:
[drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-2: switching from hotplug detection to polling
In this case, drm means Direct Rendering Management and has to do with your Video subsystem.  An interrupt is where the hardware sends a signal to the processor that something has happened that requires the urgent attention of the processor.  The kernel is protesting that the hardware is barraging it with interrupt requests.

  • Itunes freezes when my external hard drive is plugged in

Awhile back, in the summer, I upgraded to the newest version of itunes, and ever since, itunes doesn't work when my external hard drive is plugged in (which contains most of my music). When I unplug it, it will play the music on my computer, but when it's plugged in, it won't work at all and only freezes. I reinstalled it, and then slowly started putting some music in from the external hard drive, and it worked, but after I put a bunch in it froze up again. I have no idea why this is happening, as it was never a problem before. SUGGESTIONS?!

Either use the startup key commands or use System Preferences>Startup Disk to select the external hard disk before you shut down.

  • Why does my airbook mac freeze when using external hard drive

This is a recent development, my MacBook Air freezes when I attach my external CD drive and I have to do a hard restart (hold the power button till it turns off). This never use to happen. Any suggestions? Cheers!

    Hi
Can anyone suggest what is happening and how to get around this? In worst case is there a way to move the files outside of imovie that will still allow them to be properly displayed within imovie?
I don't think that it can be done that way - BUT I KNOW that it can be very destructive
most probably end up as un-reparable.
The move of projects and events - works so much better in iMovie'09

  • Finder freezes when accessing an external drive

I have been using WD 3TB green drives in docks for storage for years. For the last 6 months occasionally I will access one of the drives and the finder freezes up, I will then need to restart the computer. When I try to mount my drive I get a "The disk inserted was not readable by this computer". I do not want to loose the data so I will not initialize the drive. Disk Utility will not even recognize the drive nor will Disk Warrior. In order to save the data I need to use a recovery software. I use Ontrack EasyRecovery Home, it works great but is taxing on the computer and takes a lot of time. So does anybody know why this is happening? Is it a problem with my computer or the manufacturing of the drives?
Probably a coincidence, but this has only happened to the WD green drives since they changed the packaging from green to yellow.

Interesting.  What avout your login items in your Accounts preferences?

Remove maudio, specifically that com.maudio.usb.fasttrackpro.driver.  If you just move that out of /System/Library/Extensions (or if there is an installer) you need to reboot after adding/deleting kext's.
If no software was installed by you then somehow that external got that com.seagate.SeagateStorageGauge.plist installed in your /Library/LaunchAgents.  If the maudio removal doesn't change anything then this segat launchagent is the next to go.

  • Freezing when saving to share drive.

    Hi everyone,
I am posting here because I have been troubleshooting an issue for a couple weeks now with no resolution.  I had the CS4 design suite with Photoshop and Illustrator on a Windows 7 64bit computer and was having issues with Illustrator freezing and going to "(Not Responding)" when I would try to save to a share drive on our server, but when I would save to the local computer, it wouldn't have any issues at all.  After reading about this issue for a while, I decided to buy the CS5 suite and upgrade due to compatibility issues on CS4.  Well now I am on CS5 and having the same issues. If anyone knows why I am having this issue or some steps to try to resolve it, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance,

The drive is just a shared drive on the server that the user has full permissions to.
When I save to the desktop and copy that over to the server, it's instant.  Yes we could save to the server before.  That was when we were using CS4 on an XP Pro 32 Bit computer.  When we upgraded her to 64 bit, the issues started.  There are no new plug in's that I am aware of.
I also had her try to save to the server with PDF Compatibility off and it still froze.
Very frustrating, but thanks for your reply.

  • Brcmsmac - boot freezes when wi-fi is off

I am having witch my wi-fi card BCM4313 running on the brcmsmac driver on the latest Arch kernel 3.4.4-3-ARCH. When wi-fi is off (my Toshiba A660 have a hardware button to control the state of wi-fi card) the boot process stuck after starting wicd, when wi-fi is on at boot everything works fine. And if I turn off the wi-fi while the system is already booted I don't get any problems, the system works fine (I tried to search networks - no freezers). It is possible to fix it witch out changing the driver (I don't like wl driver)? As I remember this happens sinc 3.2 kernel, on previous it works fine but downgrading the kernel isn't a solution. An idea?

Not really a solution for my problem - wicd deamon starts automatic at boot, and I don't wan change this.

  • Weird Startup Chime / Hit-And-Miss Booting / freeze when door is closed!

    I have a Digital Audio - originally 466.
Upon startup, instead of hearing "BONG" I hear "B-static-O-static-N-static-G-static"
Most of the time, the computer boots fine. Sometimes it will never send signal to the displays. rarely, i'll hit the power button, and hear the remixed chime, but the power button goes out - the the case fans still running.
Also, if I keep the door to the computer closed, the computer will eventually freeze or panic.
Replaced onboard battery, reset stuff in OF, replaced ram, replaced vidcard, has two hard drives, has cpu upgrade to dual 1ghz.
    I'm stumped!

All of the fans work properly, nice and clean inside, too.
Nothing plugged into the audio ports - use a USB audio interface. The goofy startup noise happens irrespective of the use of the audio port.
the CPU is a sanctioned (or whatever) OWC upgrade.

  • Why does itunes 10.4 freeze when using network hard drive

Since downloading latest software evety time I open iTUNES it freezes. Cannot add any music from my network hard drive to iTUNES library. I add and sync from laptop HD and the softwaren woks ok, Windows media player plays all my files from the network HD. But when I re-set preferences to look up files from the NHD; NOTHING!!
I have set up sharing and have four computors mapped to see my network hard drive (differing operating systems, is that an issue?).

Refer to this discussion link.  It's the Logitech Gaming software.

  • B580 Not booting (freeze) with attached USB3 3TB Drive

    Hi,
I owned some weeks ago a 3TB WD MyBook. Anythingis fine, except I do not disconnect this drive while (re)starting. What i did done:
    - check varios BIOS settings (turn of USB Boot, disable USB3 etc.)
    - update Bios (now 1.16)

    hi B580user,
Just to verify, were you able to get the 3TB WD MyBook drive on another PC?
Looking around, I saw that were numerous firmware updates done for this drive. If you're having problems getting the 3TB WD MyBook detected on other systems too, I would try and update the firmware of the drive first.
    - Firmware update v3.2.4.2 (updated 12/19/2013)
    - Firmware update v3.2.4.2 release notes
    Regards

  • [SOLVED] Problem with second SATA drive

My laptop has two hard drive bays, and just recently I added a second SATA drive (moved it from my old laptop) to the extra bay.
Now, anytime the second hard drive /dev/sdb has any heavy disk activity, it appears to cause a shutdown of the SATA port for the first drive (/dev/sda)!  Though the second drive is still fine, and I can still write to it until the system crashes from the root drive (on /dev/sda) being shutdown.
If I don't mount and use the second drive, the first drive works just fine, and I can pound it with traffic without issue.
I can reproduce this problem by copying large amounts of data to drive 2.
This is when I get in my dmesg when the first SATA drive shuts down:

I have experimented, and found that if I turn off NCQ on the kernel command line in my bootloader (libata.force=noncq), that it takes longer before the problem occurs.  Though, if I write enough to the second drive, it does still happen after a while, just greatly reduced its chances of happening.
Is it possible that the old drive (sdb) is causing the problem?  I noticed that it is much noisier than I remember when the drive head moves around.
Another curiosity while I was trying to duplicate the problem:
      - I start a large file copy from sda -> sdb
      - At the same time in another terminal, I do "find / -print"
      - When I hear the drive 2 head moving, it pauses the output of the "find" command.
Every time I hear the head move, I see the find output pause.  Its almost like the drive seek on drive 2 causes the whole Sata controller to pause while the head moves.  Very odd!
Anyone have any ideas?   I think the next thing I will try is borrow a drive from another machine, and do the big write to it to see if I get the same results.
If it is of any help, here is some more info on the laptop:

It appears my drive one really is failing.  It was the first drive and not the second making the loud head seek sound.  I borrowed another drive from a friend, and copied my drive one to it.   No problems with the new drive in place.

  • Windows boot hangs at logo when 2nd SATA drive attached

    Hi,
    I have a system with a K9NBPM2-FID mobo.
I have several IDE drives and two SATA drives installed.  The two SATA drives are a 150GB WD Raptor and a 320GB Seagate.
I've had this system for awhile, and the Raptor is installed in the computer case, and originally, I had the 320GB Seagate in a trayless SATA enclosure (which is in the case).  When I had that configuration, the system would occasionally hang on the Windows logo screen (the one with the scrolling bar), and I'd have to pop the 320GB out, and then it'd reboot ok.
I thought that maybe the trayless enclosure might be getting flaky, so when I doing some work on the system recently, I stuck the 320GB drive into the enclosure and connected it directly to the mobo via a new SATA cable.
Since then, I've noted that "hanging at boot" behavior more often :(...  And, now that the drive is in the case, I can no longer just pop the 320GB drive out anymore :(...
The 320GB drive itself seems to be ok, i.e., once the system boots, it seems to work ok.
At this point, I'll probably pull the drive out of the case, and put it back into the trayless enclsure, but I was wondering if anyone might know what the problem might be or suggest how I could get this system to boot reliably with the 320GB drive plugged in?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jim

    Hi,
I don't know if this may be involved, but I was doing some googling, and found this:
    http://blog.tfanshteyn.com/2007/09/system-freeze-and-sata-command-queuing.html
The Seagate PDF for the 320GB drive specifies that it does support NCQ:
    http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_barracuda_7200_10.pdf
I checked the driver settings for the SATA drives under Windows Device Manager, and I noticed that "enable command queuing" was checked on all of the SATA channels, but I figured I'd try disabling that "enable command queuing" and see what would happen.
I've done several reboots after that, including powering completely off, etc., and the system appears to boot ok, now, even with the Seagate 320GB drive plugged into the trayless enclosure.
I'll keep any eye on this, but I'm hoping that maybe that was the reason for the problem.
    Later,
    Jim

  • B85-G43 A2 boot error when connecting more then one SATA driver

    Hello everyone please help me.
As the title says, whenever i connect more than one sata driver (hdd or dvd) i get te A2 boot freeze....
Already changed cables, hard drives, and problem persist!
Sorry for my bad english, not my main language.
    Board: MSI b85-g43
    Bios: c.40
    VGA:   amd 7970 black edition
    PSU:   xfx pro1000w
    Intel Core i5-4670K
    MEM: HyperX 1600 8gb
HDD: kingston 120gb ssd and two SATAS
    OS: Windows 7 64bit Ultimate

    Svet, thx for replying.
I'm a noob here and have some doubts about this steps...
1.) >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< (Ok got it.)
A.) Download the attached archive and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress. (Ok got it)
B.) Download and install the Forum flash tool. (MSI HQ Forum USB flasher?)
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick. (Ok got it)
D.) Make sure that all win 8 options are disabled. (Fast Boot etc) Also make sure the legacy USB is enabled. (win 8 options??? i'm running on a win7 ultimate 64bit)
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive. (Ok got it.)
F.) Boot to the USB and follow the directions. MEMTEST is included with the forum flash tool and it is recommended to run this prior to any flash. (ok got it, change boot sequence to USB and follow the directions.)
Yeah i know a lot of doubts, sorry for that, Working all day and at night i have to go to the university.
    Thank you for your time!!!

  • Annoying Delay when booting up SATA drive with KT6V

OK, I've almost given up on Via SATA after reading the myriad of troubles everyone else is having, but here's my issue:
I've installed Windows XP onto a Seagate 120GB SATA drive. When I boot up, SOME applications (in particular, Control Panel and any app running off of a CD) won't fire up when I double click on them. Going to the Task Manager, I can see that the application is in the Processes list. There is no drive activity. If I wait a few minutes, the applications load and run just fine. The irritating thing is that some apps open up just fine. Internet Explorer has never had a problem opening (although Live Update has, go figure).
I'm running an Athlon 2500+ on a KT6V-LSR with a Radeon 9500 Pro, 512MB PC2700, and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound card. I have a Liteon CDR and a separate DVD player. The only Hard drive in the machine is the Seagate SATA 120GB.
If anyone has a fix for this delay, please do tell.

Or perhaps you are running Core Center, as has being said a lot of times that it uses more than 90% of CPU resources....BTW you could tell us something about the P.Su.: its brand and AMPS. it gives to 3.3v. 5v. and 12v.
