Boot from Disk Warrior?

I tried to boot from DW CD and all I get is a grey apple screen.
I dragged DW image to an external drive and it will not launch.
A warning tells me to uncheck ignore owership in the info - but there is no such option.
Anyone able to run DW on the system of a 2010 Macpro?

Disk Warrior doesn't yet support the latest Mac Pros: http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/support.html. You'll need to get a second bootable hard drive/partition and install it on that to repair your normal hard drive/partition.

  • Cannot boot from Disk Warrior 4.0

Is any one having this problem ? When I try to boot from the Disk Warrior disk it just goes to the apple icon then restarts. I must have tries for 20 min holding the "c" key watching my system restart over and over again never mounting the disk. It has been totally unsuccessful using DW 4.0. Its a bummer because I am a fan of this product.

DW dose not boot with the new intel macs!
As you noted you cannot boot an intel Mac from DW 4. Disk Warrior 4.1.1 is the intel version and now boots a version of Leopard from the DVD (the previous version booted into Tiger). If you can't get it to boot using the keyboard at startup try going to System Preferences - Startup Disk and setting to boot from the DVD and restart. If your Mac still refuses to boot from the DVD then as others have already indicated you may have a hardware problem.
Have a look at the Disk Warrior Support Page to get the free update to 4.1.1

  • Boot from Disk warrior disc?

I was able to boot from the diskwarrior disc on my 2008 Macpro.
I can not on my new 2010 Macpro. All I get is the white apple screen.
    why not?
The system drive graph is a mess and I need to rebuild it- suggestions?

I didn't think anyone used the CD.
Install OS X to a small 30GB volume. Use that and keep it only for maintenance and repairs. Running OS X in any fashion is better and easier to rebuild the directory - OS X does not like total lack of a VM. Plus you can run multiple programs, boot faster, and you are using the latest OS X and Disk Utility and not locked into a fixed version. Same holds true for using Disk Utility, only use the DVD when there is no other means.
And with small affordable drives, or even SDHC Flash Memory card you can boot and run OS X off small 8GB (some have trimmed it to fit on 4GB but have to do that first on a hard drive).
I would clone the system (SD or CCC) and run DW against the (updated) backup image regularly. Then switch over and boot from clone (insure it works) and then repair the main system (and other drives).
With 4-5 internal drives, Firewire, and USB, lots of options for alternate boot volumes, and you can take a 1 or 2TB drive and just shrink and create a small volume on the end for such purposes.
So no need to rely on booting from CD or DVD, ever.

Which keyboard layout you were using? German, French ... I suppose your layout is reset to the default: US and you are unable to find the "?" or "/" ...
Please have a look into the keyboard viewer, to see how the layout of your keyboard is actually.

  • Folder with question mark + wont boot from disk

    Hi
I am trying to reinstall a powermac g5 from the disk, using a old hard drive that works.. (formatted in NTFS) (hoping that when selected to boot from disk, mac will then erase and reformat it)this image is presented when i hold down the option key and the disk ejects this other image is presented when i hold down C (folder with question mark blinking) and the disk ejects... also presented if i boot normally.... Could some help be offered please??????
    Powermac G5
    Thank you in advance

Yes, you must Format it HFS+ first...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    How to format your disks...

(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

  • Boot Issue BIOS won't boot from Disk

Ok, heres my issue.  First I was having issue installing Win2k and found I had to disconnect my USB ZIP drive to boot (BIOS Option was disabled)(This is just a note).  After installing WIN2k on a WD300BB I was having no issues until I removed my Win2k CDROM disk.  At that point the bois (seeing the drive) would not boot (Insert a bootable disk error).  To get around this issue I created a bootable nt floppy disk to boot the hard drive.
I also attempted to do a fdisk /mbr with no help.  If i put the win2k cdrom into the cdrom drive and have one option to boot from CDROM it will boot from disk.  I do NOT hit a key to boot from cdrom.  I also cut wire 1 & 2 from IDE cable.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply,  the IDE cable is cut and there are no jumpers on the drive.  This is a bios issue.  If I boot from floppy to Win2k, this system works greate.  But it will not boot off the hard drive with out assistance.

  • HP 3500 MicroTower doesn't boot from disk!

We are facing a very strange issue with HP 3500 , the machine can't boot from disk ! only way to get it to boot is to pxe boot it.
Whenever it can't find a Pxe server to boot from it failed to boot from disk with an error that "No boot disk detected ... "
Disks are detected correctly in the setup/bios and quick smart check tests are passing successfully.
I have tried to disable the network boot but this didn't help as well, it indeed skipped the Pxe boot step but it still fails to boot from disk with the same error.
The OS installed on the machine is Ubunutu 12.04
    Note:
We installed extra 2 disks to this machine and 2 extra network cards as well , not sure if this is related but I thought it worth mentioning it.

  • Problem with kernel panic message - Cannot boot from disk or usb

    Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if someone could help me with a problem I've been trying to tackle for the last few days. I have a 24" iMac 2.33 Ghz Dual Core, with 2 gigs of RAM. A couple of days ago my computer crashed, and when I tried to boot up again I got the infamous grey screen kernel panic message ("You need to restart your computer..."). What's worse is that I get the same message when I try booting from my external drive and the installation disk itself.
I've basically planned on formatting since it's been a while anyway, but since I can't boot from my external drive or the installation disk that came with my computer these are not options at the moment. I can only get into the computer via safe mode. I've used disk utility to verify the disk, and it comes up with no errors. Anyways, I'd really appreciate if anyone had any advice on this. I've scoured the internet for advice about kernel panic messages, and they all suggest booting from disk or external drive etc., which is not a possibility for me right now.
    Thanks

If you get a panic when trying to boot from the installation disc, and the disc is not scratched or dirty, then you have a hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Losing User Accounts on many machines. Cannot boot from Disk. Help!

As many of you know there is a bug going around where the OS “forgets” what user accounts are on the machine. The only user at login is “Other”. This has happened on 10.6.5 and 10.6.6. In the past I have been able to fix this issue by booting from the Snow Leopard disk, change the root password, login using root and re-add the user accounts back under system pref’s. The issue I’m currently having is that two Mac Pros will not boot from disk, external HD, or into single user mode. None of the key commands work at boot up.
The computers do not chime at boot and the apple logo shows up very quickly. I’ve tried resetting PRAM and the logic board. I now have two BRICKED machines and cannot afford to have any more go down.
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

I just had a very similar problem this morning on my iMac. Plain white screen on boot-up. No Apple logo. No booting from my SuperDuper clone, no booting from the DVD, no booting into Startup Manager by holding down the option key, no booting even into Apple Hardware Test. I was getting ready to take it in for service.
What finally fixed it was resetting PRAM three times. Hold down command, option, P, and R, and keep them down until you hear the third startup chime. That's what finally breathed life back into my iMac.

  • Can't boot 10.5.8 MacBook Pro from Disk Warrior while restarting using "c"

    Hello,
I am helping a friend maintain her 2008 MacBook Pro (10.5.8). Have safe-booted several times, and repaired permissions.
Since she is having minor issues, I brought over my Disk Warrior v. 4.1 (CD rev. 42) which has done wonders for other Leopard Macs.
Her MacBook Pro just refuses to boot from the Disk Warrior CD when I hold down the "c" key while re-starting. It starts as usual from its OS. This has never happened to me before. So I cannot use Disk Warrior on her comp, as far as I know.
Whenever I have used this Disk Warrior CD on mine and other 10.5.8 computers, and booted holding down "c" key, everything goes swimmingly.
Grateful if anyone can anyone offer a suggestion...
Could it be her drive, her logic board, my not re-setting PRAM on her computer? Or a total mystery?
    Many thanks,
    Neil

Most likely because you have a version of DW that cannot boot that model. The current version of DW is 4.2. You can download DW 4.2 and create a new CD but that requires burning a new CD as part of the updating process.
Is there any particular reason why you cannot repair the disk using Disk Utility? Just boot from the Leopard installer DVD or the original installer DVD that came with the computer, then use DU from within the installer (Utilities menu) to repair the hard drive (repair, don't verify.)

  • IBook osx 10.5.6 no finder, won't boot fully, can't boot from disk

My iBook has worked fine ever since the upgrade to 10.5.6, no problems at all.
I installed Safari 4, and whatever security updates it required for that a few days ago and everything still worked fine.
Yesterday I awoke it from sleep and the colors of the default desktop (aurora) had all black parts turned blue, there was no bar at the top of the screen (where file edit, clock etc usually are ), and the finder didn't work. Dock and all it's icons showed up but none are clickable.
Did a hard shut down with the power button, restart it passes grey screen fine, goes direct to blue screen then to desktop - no starting OS X progress bar or anything, then back to the same blue-tinted desktop, unclickable dock, and lack of top bar.
I booted to single user mode, ran /sbin/fsck -yf said drive was ok,
can't boot up with the install disk, or with disk warrior. It passes the grey screen fine, but then gets to blue screen and the computer just shuts down, then boots back into that same bluish desktop.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks very much,
    Maikunari

    Hello m:
You have (IMHO) a hardware problem. Without being able to boot from a DVD the troubleshooting options are almost nil.
You could try to reset the SMC/PMU:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
If that does not work, I am afraid a trip to a technician for diagnosis is in order.

  • Not supported hardware to boot from disk

    Hi everybody
I have a problem by installing windows vista ultimate on my mac pro. All four disk bays contain the same harddrive (Samsung HD501LJ). Bay 1+2 are configured in a RAID0 array,. Bay3 is a native disk for windows and bay4 is used for the new timemachine feature under Mac OS X Leopard.
I have partitioned the drive with "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)" and set up a second parition with boot camp assistent for windows vista (MS-DOS; 32GB).
In the windows installation wizard, the partition was recognized as "Drive 3, Parition 2 - BOOTCAMP). To boot from this disk, windows vista needs NTFS formatting, so I have run the "Format" Wizard, which was successful.
After this step, the setup returns the following error:
"This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers's BIOS menu."
"Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation."
Anybody an idea, what's going wrong here?

    Thanks for you reply.
I have also tried to install windows vista on a single partition/harddrive. Bootcamp fromats the drive with FAT32, the vista installer do the rest and format the drive with NTFS. The result is the same. Diskspace is now 450gb (hole disk)
Could it be, that the raid0 array for my os x 10.5 make troubles? The drive on which I want to install windows, is not in this raid0 array!
Or do I have to install 64bit-os-version for my mac pro? (xeon 64bit cpus)

  • Macbook pro won't boot to OSX, bootcamp windows works fine. Also won't boot from disk, even with a new (blank) hard drive inserted. Any ideas (I've already tried everything I could find on the forums with no success)?

    Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone has found a solution to this kind of problem.  I've found lots of similar posts, but none that have any solutions that will work.
    Cheers

Did some research, what I did was acidentally convert my disks to dynamic, and dynamic doesnt allow you to boot from them, so if I were to plug this macbook's HDD into another computer and them use that computers disk manager to convert them back to basic, would they then be usable again, or have I caused damage that requires a reinstall.
    Thanks
