Boot from DVD but cannot find hard drive now

just updated to 10.7.3, then cannot boot from hard drive. I boot from DVD and cannot find hard drive now

Did the 10.7.3 update complete the installation process?
Some updates, when being installed and applied can restart (but not fully start up) the machine a couple of times.
I'd restart your machine and give it a few uninterrupted minutes to see if it boots up normally. Depending on the specs of your iMac, the remapping of app shortcuts etc can take a little while to complete (but not an excessive amount of time).
It is unlikely the update caused your hard drive to fail.
If your iMac doesn't boot up, restart and boot into the recovery partition of Lion by holding down both the cmd & R keys while booting. This will run Lion Recovery which will allow you to repair your Hard Drive, reinstall or install a fresh copy of Lion (network access is required).
If this fails, boot from the recovery DVD and launch Disk Utility from the Tools option in the toolbar and see if your hard drive is listed in Disk Utility. If your hard drive is not listed, there is a hard drive problem and you'll need to speak to Apple Tech Support to arrange a repair.
Hope this helps

Dowloaded a upgrade to os X them restarted computer now it cannot find hard drive can anyone help?

Have you tried rebooting from the installer disks that came with your iBook and running Disk Utility?
This should give you some fast feedback as to the state of your hard drive... i.e. can you see the hard drive through Disk Utility?
Let us know what steps you have taken to try to repair so we can give you some specific tips.
Generally this is always good place to start:

  • Cannot find hard drive

I was going to install leopard - failed - now computer cannot find hard drive - I tried to reinstall tiger cannot find hard drive so put disk warrior - finds hard drive says is it an extended adjusts everything - finds hard drive and says it is okay - any brain storms - I do have a back up hard drive hooked up to a very old IMAC to download the info so I can give it away - so I know I can use that to get to the infor on the hard drive in fact I can get to it through disk warrior

Make a clone of your HD then, while things are still good. Do you have a firewire drive or another internal drive you can make a clone to?
If you make a clone, you can then try to install Leopard and if it doesn't work again, reinstall the clone.

  • Booting from clone with malfunctioning internal hard drive

I have a MBP 15" core 2 duo 3,1, OS 10.6.8. I am getting sudden instant shutdowns without warning signs.
It has been suggested to me that this is a hard drive on the way out.
I've cloned the internal drive to an external drive Firewire 800 connected.
I have 2 partitions on the external drive. The clone and a clean install of 10.6.8.
I've tried booting from the clean install but am still experiencing sudden shutdowns.
My question is if the internal drive mounts but then experiences problems while I am booted into my fresh install on the external drive can that cause a shutdown? I had assumed that this would not be the case but now am not so sure.

Well it seems to be a hardware issue of some sort, it's likely not software related as it occurs on the externals even with a fresh install.
It could be the internal drive, but you won't know until you disconnect it and boot from the externals.
If it's something else, at least you got a clone off.
    Try a hardware test

    Try resetting your SMC

    Heck your PRAM too

That's the best we can do from here, you'll have to open her up and place pressure on things to make sure they are snug and a secure connection, perhaps disconnect the internal hard drive cable and see if your problem continue.

  • Cannot find hard drive in startup disk or when trying to reinstall OS X

I just wanted to double check to see what the problem would be before going in any repair place.
I have recently had a gray screen and obviously when ever I start it will go to the gray screen with a folder with a question mark appears.
I've gone to the OS X utility by pressing and holding option, but whenever I've tried to do any of the repairs such as:
    reinstalling the OS X
    going to startup Disk
It won't show any hard drive what so ever for me to even try and fix.
But when i'm in Disk utitlity it has the base disk0 and it verfies it and says its okay.
really confused and not that well informed with Macbook pro hardwire problems.
I think its just a HD fail. but I'm trying to see if there is any other possiblities.

Take the HDD out of the MBP and install it in an enclosure.  Connect it to the MBP via USB and boot the MBP via startup manager:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1310
If the MBP boots, you have a faulty SATA cable.  If it does not, you will have to access the HDD via the recovery partition or the original install disks and run Disk utility>First Aid.
    Ciao.

    Hello Cargomsgt,
It sounds like you downloaded an app onto your computer and did not find it on your iPad or your computer after syncing your iPad. When you purchase iOS apps on a computer, and you want it to sync to your ios device, you need to install the app onto the devie using iTunes.  The following article will help you with that:

You can also download the app to the iPad directly from the App Store on the it:

  • Boot from second partition on usb hard drive

I have a time machine external usb drive. I have created a second partition of 8GB on this drive and restored OS X Install ESD 10.7.5 to this second partition so that I can easily rebuild if necessary. I would like to be able to boot from this second partition. When I hold down Option key at startup, I see the external drive as an option, but the iMac wants to boot from the Time Machine Backup partition, rather than the Lion Partition. It doesn't give me the choice of the second, bootable partition on this drive. Is it possible to do this?
    [Mac 24" early 2009, running 10.7.5 Lion]

    rchealey wrote:
Curiously when you boot from this partition, you get virtually the exact same experience as you do when booting from the recovery partition except that the recovery partition tends to suggest that it will download and install Lion, whereas booting from the partition containing the install doesn't mention download.
That's normal behavior. The Recovery HD only has enough code to go to Apple's servers and DL the installer; whereas, the InstallESD contains everything. Do note, however, that running either will check Apple's servers for additional components, whatever those might be. Thus, Internet access is required to do either.

  • Booting from an Iomega 500GB UltraMax  Hard Drive

Are these suppose to be Leopard bootable?

I've never used SuperDuper, I know they had to update it to get it work with Leopard. Do you have the latest version?
If you have some time, you might try using the Disk Utility Restore function to make a clone onto one of the partitions and see if that boots better. If so, there might still be some sort of problem with SuperDuper and Leopard.
As for whether there are too many bootable clones on the drive: don't know, my clones have always been to drives with one, two or occasionally three partitions. Recently had trouble with a 2 partition drive that had one partition for a clone of my G4 tower, and the second for my iBook. The iBook just did not want to use its own clone, kept defaulting to the G4 tower's clone (and it would actually boot from it too). The only way I could get it to boot from its own clone was to select it in System Prefs-Startup, then reboot.

  • I can customize from computer but cannot find that option for my iPhone or iPad. Is there a way to customize on these?

How do I customize the iCal from iPhone or iPad?  I can "customize" from computer but not the others. What am I missing?   (eg. I need to set up a meeting the second Monday of each month & not a specific day).

You should back up the iPad and transfer purchases.  Then back up the iPhone and transfer purchases there as well.  Then restore the iPad from the iPhone back up to get the code.  Once you get the code then restore the iPad from the original backup you created of the iPad.

  • Boot Failure- Cannot find Hard Drive

I have a TX2500.  It has a HD with two partitions, one for C: and the other for recovery backup.  One day, it crashed.  It cannot boot up because of hard disk not found (error: 03F0).  I plugged it in my PC and repaired the C:.  I have no problem from reading and opening files in the HD from my PC.  But still, the laptop doesn't boot up because of hard disk not found.
    Any fix?

Did your try loading bios defaults?

  • Mac Mini won't boot from dvd

I just picked up a used Mac Mini and the previous owner didn't wipe the hard drive. He did include the original install disks in the package, though. I inserted the install disk & it says that OS X Tiger can't be installed on the mini (currently it is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8). I tried to boot from DVD but if I hold down the c key, nothing happens and it boots to the HD like normal. If I hold down the option key, the only boot option shown is the HD. I don't get any request for a password, so this mini doesn't appear to have a firmware password set. The DVD drive appears to be functioning fine since it can read the DVD - I just can't boot from it. If I use the Startup disk utility the only option shown once again is the HD. I even tried upgrading to Mavericks, but get an error message that it can't be installed on this mini (I checked the requirements and this machine meets them - running 10.6.8, at least 2 Gig ram, 1.83 GHz Core 2 duo, 60 Gigs free space on the drive.......
I want to do a clean install but am at a loss on how to do so. Any suggestions?

I inserted the install disk & it says that OS X Tiger can't be installed on the mini (currently it is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8).
You can't install an older version of OS X on top of a newer version. You would have to erase the disk first.
I tried to boot from DVD but if I hold down the c key, nothing happens and it boots to the HD like normal.
Make sure you're using disk# 1 of 2 of the two gray disk set., and that you hold the C key down for enough time, the boot process from the DVD is much slower than from a hard drive. However, since you have Snow Leopard installed now, there is no point in trying to install Tiger, unless he didn't give you his Admin password; you wouldn't be able to add yourself as a new user or delete his user name without knowing the admin password.
If you did get Tiger installed, then you would have to buy a copy of Snow Leopard on DVD.
I checked the requirements and this machine meets them - running 10.6.8, at least 2 Gig ram, 1.83 GHz Core 2 duo, 60 Gigs free space on the drive.......
Those aren't the complete requirements. It has to be an Early 2009 MacMini, Model Identifier number 3.1, to be compatible with Mavericks. Click on the Apple Menu's, "About This Mac," More Information, then System Report, to locate that information.

  • Trying to boot from DVD

Have an h8-1360t with win 7 pro.
Burned a Knoppix DVD that boots and runs fine on my old machine (10 year old IBM PC), but can't get the new HP machine to boot from the DVD.
Went into setup during boot and tried to force it to boot from DVD, but when select dvd drive and hit return, nothing happens.  Stuck in setup menu until I hit escape - which just starts a normal boot from the hard drive.
Tried resetting the boot order, but that was even worse.  Got an error and had to let it go through some kinf of restore operation.

Try disabling Secure boot and enabling Legacy boot in the BIOS then change the boot order.  No guarantee that the DVD will boot as it was based on technology of 10 years ago.  Computer have quite a bit since then.
