Boot from PCIe SSD on Mac Pro 3,1

Hi guys,
I bought a Early 2008 Mac Pro.
I'm thinking about disk upgrade, to improve its performance. First i thought about Apricorn velocity x2 with a SSD mounted on it.
Then i saw this
Cavalry PCIe MLC SSD (256GB)
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G5Q6Y26?psc=1
Is this pcie ssd supported by the motherboard?
Could i also boot from this?
Thank you

I have not seen LSI mentioned and would avoid that one

Booting is low on priority to me, even a good SSD on native SATA II drive bay bus will help immensely.
PCIe is helpful when it comes to data, scratch, graphic libraries.

  • Cannot boot from Superdrives on my Mac Pro!!

    Hello,
So I tried to boot last night from my Disk Warrior CD in order to do a maintenance check.
I hold C key but in vain after a couple of minutes I get the black screen/freeze with the message to restart holding power button.
Today, I tried to install Leopard on my external firewire drive and when the Mac restarted I got the same result.......freeze.
I tried both Superdrives.......same result, verified connections etc..... no dice.
I run the latest Leopard 10.5.3 in a first edition Mac Pro Dual 2.66 with 13GB RAM and 3 hard drives.
What bugs me is the fact that while holding or not the C key, after a couple of minuted I hear the ''click'' that you hear when you shut down the Mac Pro. It is like the Mac is shutting off but still runs for a few minutes before giving me the black screen.
This means I cannot boot anything anymore on my Mac Pro.
Please help me, any deas, what should I try doing.
The 2 Superdrives are Pioneer 111D and 112D......one is master the other on cable select.
    Thank you.

Another Surprise: I tried to boot from the original Mac Pro Install Discs, result: it crashes even faster.
Well that's a BUMMER You've got a hardware problem somewhere and it's time for 'Hit or Miss' Tactics to find it
First things First. Follow Theses Steps ...
Step 1) Can you boot from the hard drive with both 'Superdrives' plug in and empty?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 2) Check the 'Superdrives' from the 'System Profiler' -> 'Hardware' -> 'ATA Bus'. Does it list BOTH Drives?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 3) Is the TOP drive 'Unit Number: 0' (Zero) and the BOTTOM drive 'Unit Number: 1'.
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 4) Can you 'Mount' a CD/DVD to the 'Desktop' from both drives?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 5) Can you 'REBOOT' the 'Install DVD' from the 'Desktop'?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 6) Happy Days Are Here Again. Stop Here.
    Step 7) 'DON'T PANIC!
Step 8) Open case and remove the 'Superdrive' bay. The 'Original' drive should be in the TOP bay with the END OF the 'Ribbon' cable plugged in to it. This 'Ribbon' cable and the 'Superdrive' should have a 'NOTCH' and can ONLY be plugged in a certain way. Set the 'Drive Select' jumper to 'Master'. Unplug the 'Ribbon' and 'Power' cable from the 'BOTTOM Superdrive'.
Step 9) Repeat Steps 1 thru 5 and if you make it to Step 6, Repeat Step 8 using the 'BOTTOM Superdrive'.
Step 10) Hmm, both 'Superdrives' WORK by themselves but NOT together So connect the TOP drive back as in Step 8 and connect the BOTTOM drive but change the BOTTOM drive's 'Jumper' to 'Slave'. Leave the TOP drive set to 'Master'.
Step 11) Repeat Steps 1 thru 5 and if you DO NOT make it to Step 6 then I'll need more information from your 'Console Error Logs'.
    End Of Steps ............................................................................... .................................
Not relevant to you problem BUT did you change your VIDEO CARD?

  • 480Gb Mercury Accelsior PCI SSD on Mac Pro 2009

Just purchased a 480Gb Mercury Accelsior. Want to run System and Applications on it. Need best strategy for making the switch. Thanks.

Too big for OS and apps, costs too much for what you get, a $150 WD 10K 250GB 200MB/sec would do fine and OWC SSDs aren't worth the premium or as reliable as they use to appear, if they ever did. Whether the 3rd party TRIM Enabler is a good or bad thing, but TRIM is not support in Lion on 3rd party and it does play a role in reducing Garbage Collection on needless page cells.  So you just purchased it? and the forum is littered with lots of threads on set up, cloning, moving home folder or maybe clean install is what you need to do.

  • Installing OS and Apps on SSD boot drive on early 2008 Mac Pro while keeping all other data from old iMac on hdd

So I've just got myself a early 2008 Mac Pro with a OCZ RevoDrive 80GB PCIe SSD to replace my old iMac which is slowly but surely giving up on me. I want to put my OS (mavericks) and some/all (whichever is possible/easier) apps, both apple and 3rd party, from my old iMac, onto the SSD but keep all my other data on the 2TB HDD, also from my old iMac, in the mac pro. Can anyone tell me how to do this/if its possible? (not massively tech savvy so simpleish language and steps would be handy!) Thanks!

How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu. You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • No Boot from Internal SSD RAID 0  ( partitioned )

6 Core Westmere MAc PRo 10.6.2
I have 2 OWC Exteme PRo RE SSD drives 200 Gig each -
one in lower optical bay , the other one in HD bay .
I made 2 exactly same partitons on each of those ( using Disk Utility )
and created Striped RAID on two pairs of those - using this workflow:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-HowToSetupRAID.html
( so I have 2 volumes Boot and Scratch )
Everything works fine - extremely fast .
I can do things on those volumes no problem .
So I made a Super Duper clone of my system
harddrive into "boot" SSD volume .
What I get is a " forbidden " sign while trying to boot from that .
I was able to boot from my SSD in JOBD setup ( before Raid O of partitions )
Any suggestions how to make my 400MB /S SSD raid0 volume bootable ?

Usually you do not want your scratch and system to be on the same hard drive, even if shared in RAID0.
6-core Westmere is Mid 2010 and comes with a later build of OS X than 10.6.4.
You'll also see SoftRAID recommended on MPG and what I prefer to use for arrays.
While you are experimenting, I would use the entire two SSDs in RAID0, formatted with 10.6.4 Disk Utility. And ask OWC what they think is up.

  • AMD Crossfire, Boot Camp, and the new Mac Pro Issue

    Hello, all.
I have a new Mac Pro (Late 2013) with 6 cores, 32 GB RAM, and dual D700 AMD graphics cards.  I'm using an older 30 inch Apple Cinema Display (with the dual link DVI adapter).  I've successfully installed Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp.  Here's my problem...
I understand that for the new Mac Pro under Boot Camp enables AMD CrossfireX by default from multiple sources online.  However, it's disabled on mine, and every time I try to enable it (and hit "Apply" in the AMD Control Center), it disables again.
Is Crossfire only available for use with a Thunderbolt Display attached?  Could that be the problem?  Or is the AMD Control Panel lying to me?
Now, games in Windows are still running well... But I'd like to take full advantage of the dual graphics cards in the new Mac Pro with Crossfire.  Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Fixed it!
So, not only would Crossfire not enable under Windows 8.1 on my Mac Pro in Boot Camp... But Windows started crashing massively.  I was about to wipe Boot Camp entirely and try a clean install (even though the only three things I'd installed were Windows itself using Apple's exact instructions, Steam, and Skyrim), but decided in a last ditch effort to try disconnecting and reconnecting peripherals.
Turns out the culprit was my Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock.
Disconnecting the Belkin Thunderbolt dock not only stopped Windows from crashing, but now I can enable Crossfire, as well!
Now, this is especially strange since I have read elsewhere that people have no problems using the Belkin dock under Boot Camp with other Macs... This issue is probably isolated to using it in Boot Camp with the new Mac Pro.  But disconnecting the dock from my Mac Pro has solved not just one but all of my Boot Camp issues.  (Of course, using the Belkin dock under OSX on my Mac Pro is no problem.)
Long story short, if you have a new Mac Pro and plan on using Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp, don't have the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock attached.
I'm going to contact Belkin and tell them what I've discovered.
    Hope that helps y'all.

  • Yosemite won't Boot from External SSD with Firewire Connection

Seeking help, I boot from external SSD drives from my 2010 iMac. I recently installed Yosemite on an External SSD with a firewire connection and all went well with the installation and first boot. After completing set up and restarting my iMac Yosemite will no longer boot from the firewire connection it will boot to the loading bar and then get the dreaded Goest Buster Emblem, if I swap out the SSD to USB connection it boots normally. I have 6 SSD Drives with Mavericks and Lion installed on that will boot from the Firewire Connection.  Any suggestions ?

Additionally when testing while the SSD is connected to a USB Connection and booted if I attach any firewire device they are not recognized or connected to the operating system.

I think there might be information there on how to reset Time Machine to do a full backup. I think you basically have to reset it and start over.

  • X131e 33722FU Boot from msata ssd not working

    x131e 33722FU
I installed a crucial 128gb msata ssd in the full length mpcie/msata slot.  In the documentation http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&DocID=PD024828 it shows that the wwan port can be used for ssd.  I can't get the bios to boot from the ssd.  When I am in Windows I see the drive is recognized but I can't get it to boot.  My goal is to remove the factory HDD and just boot from the SSD.
Any Idea how to get this to work?

    Hello,
I believe the ThinkPad X131e (MT: 3372-2FU) contains an AMD E2-1800 CPU and associated chipset.
As far as I know, mSATA functionality is currently only available on commecial systems equipped with Intel chipsets.  I did find reference to mSATA support in a few embedded systems with AMD G-series CPUs and A55E chipset used for things like industrial control systems, but it given the limited mention, it sounds like that it has not been widely adopted, even on systems that use AMD's A55E chipset.

Im trying to install a new SSD disk, but cant, because I cant get it to boot from the SSD, "Insert a system start disk" Works fine as a USB, even installed Windows 7 on it and tried to boot from it but with out any luck.
All I havent tried are to switch between IDE/AHCI, but that because I dont have that option in BIOS. I think I have tried everything I can test, any tips/help would be much appreciated!!
And so to the BIOS part a joke to call bios all you can do change clock settings and the bootorder more or less!
    Anywhy to get more options?
    thx

I installed it on my desktop cuz I couldnt install win7 when it was in the laptop it said it wasant a start partision, but it didnt help since it didnt boot from it even with the OS installed on the disk.
Since I cant boot from the ssd it dosent matter what I install on it.
Yeah aslong as u dont want to change anything the set bios seams ok but not as soon as you want to change anything like in my case.
something I really really miss is the fan speed control and ofc the acpi and maybe some chipset settings.
but aslong as I get my SSD to work Im more then happy with the bios settings ;)

  • Mac Pro Boot from PCIe SATA Card

Is it possible to boot a Mac Pro from a PCIe Sata adapter? I bought a PCIe SATA III card to connect to my 64 Gb C300 SSD Drive.  The internal SATA II drives are not fast enough to take full advantage of the C300.

Old Thread But Great News for MAc and PC Laptop Owners I know and trust this company and just bought this for my MAc Pro it boots up the hard drive a couple ways.  In Mac hold down the option key and or once in MAc OS tell it to startup disk the external Sata (eSATA)
Worked 100% on my Mac Pro 2008 and this works on Laptops Mac and Windows
One catch its expensive but can go up to 6G WOOOOOOOOWs
Only card out of  TON I have tried that will boot at least MAc OSX dunno about windows/Boot Camp but I think theoretically it will with the "Option" key wait and be patient and once you choose the sata drive maybe you can boot boot camp dunno?   Actually yes you can once you set the startup disk to the esata boot camp windows will boot!!!   Wooooooooot

  • Upgrading from 320gb hdd to 128gb ssd on Mac Pro dual boot.

I have a Mac Pro 2008 with a 320gb hdd and I want to convert it to a 128gb ssd.  I have it dual boot from one drive partitioned 50/50. I was wondering how I should transition from hdd to ssd.  The drive has less than 120 gb on it and the Mac Pro runs Mavericks and Windows 7.

Pop SSD into drive bay with adapter in FW800 drive adapter, use CCC to clone system and recovery partition.
As for Windows, it needs about 80GB at  least esp. on an SSD. Use WinClone to make a restore image.
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB is $144 on Amazon and the 128GB is $80. I look at the 500GB $299 and think, "why not."
you could leave for now the slow old 320GB hdd for Windows and hold a backup for OS X.
Your system, either one actually, should only have OS and apps on boot drive, very little if any data, just 3-4GB for AppData or ~/LIbrary to hold preferences, mail and minimal data.
Convert, as in clone the system.

  • Starting up problems from an old boot drive in a new mac pro

Just purchased a refurb mac pro last weekend through the apple store. I took my old drive my my first mac pro and was trying to usee it for the boot drive, That machine did not come with snow leopard. I did upgrade it to 10.6.6. When I start up from that drive in the new mac pro it was either starting up real slowly or starting up and would not give me a cursor or. On some occasion I would get a translucent blue huge on the screen. Or I could get a clear screen but nothing would happen if I clicked to open anything. I called support and we reinstalled the on the old drive. I seemed stable and was booting properly from the old drive. Then I upgraded to 10.6.6 again. We used the software the new machine came with for this process. I maybe used the new boot drive for maybe 50 seconds. Apple support wishes for me to go through the process of isolating elements. I've been running the new drive since yesterday. Everything is working well. Except after letting it run for a period of time yesterday got s grey screen after it went to sleep. We'll see what happens with that today. I do not know if it's coincidence or not but the old system went hicky after I started up Paralllels desktop.I'm using Parallelsto run Playon. I'm wondering if Parallels or the xp emulation machine I'm running with it is still trying to read the old macpro ? It did work however. I'm just curious that it's altering something in the Mac osx ? Another thing should I subtract other wirleeless choice devices on the old drive's system ? The old macpro had wireless but the module was installed aftermarket by a mac store.
    Thanks

Hard to follow your steps and thoughts. Maybe re-read and cut it into actual steps.
Always clone a system so you have a bootable backup image.
Make sure your software and drivers are compatible.
2010s boot into 64-bit kernel mode by default.
Apple still sells 2009s also on Specials page.
Your old Mac Pro wouldn't come with 10.6 unless it came out in Sept 2009 or later.
Is Parallels current? Is it attached to Windows partition or VM only? does it care that it is running on new hardware? that usually is a non-starter.
New Mac is also a good time to do thorough spring house cleaning. Clean install all the applications and drivers.
Pull your old drive out. The only use for it would be to run Setup Assistant to import your home account prefs.
The "new" refurbished hard drive is still in same state it was in when you got it?
Sleep issue. you may have external devices or 3rd party drivers or bad cable somewhere.
    Wireless?
At this point I doubt I can read between the lines.

  • Migrating Internal Non Boot HD From Old G4 To Mac Pro

    Hey guys,
I have done a search and haven't been able to find anything to help me with this. I have an extra internal HD in my old G4, it is a non boot drive. Now I want to be able to transfer all the files from it to my new Mac Pro. When I try and connect them via migration assistant, it only mounts my original G4 boot drive on the Mac Pro. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can get the etra internal HD to mount?
    Regards,
    Alex
    Mac Pro Dual 2.66 3 GB Ram 1 x 500GB Hitachi HD 1 x 500GB WD HD 30" Display   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G4 Quicksilver 867 1.12 Ram 80 GB HD 17" Studio Display

Yes, migration assistant only works with boot drives because it is designed to migrate things like user settings, applications, and so forth. It looks for drives or partitions that contain "blessed" system folders and files, to throw out an old-school Mac term.
You probably cannot put the G4 drive in your Mac Pro; the Mac Pro's bays are SATA. Your G4 is IDE.
However, you can boot your G4 in Firewire Target Mode (restart holding down the T key) and then plug the G4 into the Mac Pro via FireWire, and the G4 will mount as a drive on the Mac PRo. From there, you can copy whatever you choose from the old drive.
You can also remove the G4 drive and place it in an enclosure. I really like the ones Wiebetech.com has - I have a triple interface enclosure that offers USB, FW400, and FW800 connectors.
BTW, many people have found that using Migration Assisant is troublesome, myself included. After trying it and experiencing less than stellar performance, I wiped the Mac Pro and set it up from scratch. It's just not a good idea to copy between entirely different architectures. I've had fine results going from G4 to G5, but not from G5 to intel-based macs.
    Hope this helps!
I think that migration assistant only works with boot
drives. However, there are lots of other ways to
transfer files. The Mac Pro has 4 hard drive bays, so
one option could be to put the drive into one of
those bays... There are external drive enclosures and
    CD burners, as well.

  • How to install SSD on Mac pro as boot disc

Currently using two WD 500GB HDs, one cloned by Super Duper. I'm replacing these with two Hitachi 1TB (6 Gb/s) and would like to add an SSD for a boot up and app disk. Please help with advice on how to mechanically install the SSD (E.g., is an adapter bracket needed?) and how best to move or install OS X and the apps onto the SSD.

Yes, you need an adapter to convert the 2.5" drive to 3.5".  Here's OWC adapter.  Included on that plage I linked to is a little video illustrating how to use it.  If you buy some other adapter installation is basically the same.
As for how to make it your boot drive, there are a number of ways you can do that.  The procedures make no difference whether is it a SSD or HDD.
The first way would be to do a full clean reinstall of your system on to the boot drive.  Then if you need to, use Migration Assistant to move stuff from your "old" HDD boot drive to the new boot drive.
The second is simply clone your existing HDD to your SSD.
Once you created your new boot drive you can change your Startup Disk system preferences to default to boot from it.
No matter which method you use, always have backups before doing anything, or at least do not wipe out the original HDD until you are sure your system is fully working with the new SSD (wait a week), and then still create new backups of your new system.
Some other considerations.   Persoanlly I recommend OWC for SSD.  It's where I got my 120GB.   Assume an Snow Leopard installation needs about 25GB to work with enough room to expand its vm space, etc.   So depending on what you want to place on the SSD you probably be "safe" with anything from a 60GB to 120GB.  YOu might consider placing your home directory on a HDD leaving the SSD for the OS and what you consider "key" files.  That's how I have my system set up.
