Boot fsck from abnormal shutdown

Hi,
Since 2.6.31 my computer is unable to do a fsck when a abnormal shutdown occured (e.g. a powerout), and a second reboot is always needed because the system prompt me "give the root password or press CTRL-D to proceed" error. After pressing CTRL-D, the system reboots and do fsck at the second boot.
How can I restore to the mode that's been used before, which just do fsck automatically immediately once if an abnormal shutdown and a unclean filesystem is detected ?

This occured to me also, but I'm still using kernel 2.6.30.5
The problem seems to be elsewhere ...
At first I didn't thought this was a bug, but now that I read your post, maybe we should file a bug-report.

  • My iMac will not boot up from the Leopard upgrade disk nor will it eject it.

My iMac is very slow and sluggish.  Followed online instructions to use the Disk Utility to run repair.  After doing so it told to reboot my system from the install disk and then run the Disk Uitility to run repair from it.  I put in my Leopard upgrade disk and tried to reboot.  I get the chime and  the Apple logo and hear the disk trying to be read, but after about 5 minutes my iMac shuts completely off.  I have tried to eject the disk using all the methods found in the community and nothing works.  I want to try my orignal Mac OS X install disk to see if that works.  My computer is about a 2007 model.  It worked great until just a couple days ago.  Frankly I can't afford to take it in so I will have to figure this out on my own with your help. :-(

I cannot open terminal.  When booting I get the gray screen with the Apple logo and the twirling comb goes for a while and shut the computer completely off.
    I got into the single-mode user and learned the following: disk1s3: I/O error.  SAM Multimedia: Read & Write failed, SENSE_KEY = 0x03, ASC = 0x02m ASCQ = 0x00.
Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
    Root device is mounted read-only.
If you want to make modifcations to files: /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
I typed in the drutil eject and got:
    SAM Multimedia: Read & Write failed, SENSE_KEY = 0x03, ASC = 0x02m ASCQ = 0x00.
Library not loaded.  Reason: not suiteable image found.
    It did find:
    /system/library/rivateframeworks/installserver.framwork/versions/a/installserver :  unknown file type, firfst eight bytes: 0xCA 0xfe 0xba 0xbe 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x04 Trace/BPT trap.
I have tried holding the left mouse key, the eject key and nothing happens.  To bad I can't pull the
    thing out with tweezers.
So where do I go from here?

  • How do change boot disk from single user mode?

My G5 hangs when booting at the blue screen while "Loading printing services...". Attempting to boot into safe mode only hangs at the grey gear screen. It will, however, successfully boot into single user mode. I've run fsck but no change in bootability. I have another disk in the machine that has Tiger on it. How do I change the boot disk from the single user prompt?

You can hold c and boot off the installer disk and select disk utility repair disk/permissions
or you can hold option to boot off Mac OS X on another drive, like a clone and run Data Rescue to recvoer your files.
It does sound bad, you can try going through these
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
But I think you'll need a fresh install, hopefully you have been backing up/cloning to a external drive.

  • My G5 iMac cannot boot up from its hard disk

My G5 iMac cannot boot up from its hard disk - I get the alternating Mac OS folder and the ? Folder which I understand means the system cannot be found.
On recommendation from a friend I tried replacing the battery - no difference.
However, I can boot up from the CD/DVD drive from the OSX installer disk, DiskWarrior, Drive Genius and Techtools Pro. But none of these utilities can see my hard disk to see if it needed repairing.
In fairness at one point DiskWarrior did see the drive and I was able to replace the directory safely. However, on subsequent reboots nothing can see the disk.
Suspecting the hard disk I bought a new one and a USB/SATA casing to mount the old drive in to see if I could get anything off of it. The good news so far is that the old drive (now mounted in the new USB casing) can be seen and read on my daughters iMac. So all my information is safe and also now backed up.
Having installed the new disk I found it also cannot be seen by any of the above utilities. I have since formatted it in the USB casing and put it back in the iMac but it still cannot be seen.
As a test I installed a new system on an old 40Gig Lacie Firewire drive attached to my iMac. This works and boots ok - sometimes.
I am now experiencing the necessity to force shutdown and restart from the startup button several times before the external disk is recognised. And most times it freezes after 30 minutes or so.
I might also add that after some force shutdowns/startup I get little or no chimes. And sometimes when trying to reset the PRAM get no second chime. On other occasions I do.
Now I am totally stuck and wondering if anyone can throw some light on why my iMac can boot up from a variety of CD/DVD utilities and sometimes an external Firewire disk but not from its own hard disk which, as I have already said, can be seen on my daughter's iMac but not by mine, so its not the disk.
Does anyone have any suggestions at all before I bite the bullet and take it in for a diagnosis and repair (depending on cost).
    Thanks

Could be the logic board, in which case you would need to take it in. Since the drives are good, and the directory was repaired, the logic board is about all I can think of.

  • Hyperion Planning application got abnormal shutdown

    Hi,
Would need your help on the issue I recently hit in my environment.
    Product version: 9.3.1.1.00
    Product: Hyperion Planning
    Unix Platform: Sun Solaries 64bit
    Issue:-
The application received the Abnormal Shutdown command then the application got shutdown and then not starting up by itself after that.
    Query:-
Is there anyway to set it to be started automatically even after abnormal shutdown?
    Thanks.
    SuSin

    Hi Sandeep,
The xcp files are in the application directory.
I've raised SR in Metalink but the support request me to change the Essbase.cfg on the NETRETRY and NETRETRYCOUNT from 5000 and 3000 respectively to 1000 each and also the SERVERTHREAD from 200 change to 100.
I've read from one of the reply in the forum saying that if the xcp files are in application directory then it does not really related to the Essbase.cfg unless it is from the server directory. So if in this case, should I still modify the config file?
    Hi John,
Previously in Jan, it happended once where users are not able to retrieve the data from HyperionPlanning and also Workspace. So after that incident actually we did clear the data and reload the level-0 data. The system was OK (no more Abnormal Shutdown) for a while then came back with this issue again recently.
Anything can be apply in order to clear this problem?
    Thanks.

  • RECEIVED ABNORMAL SHUTDOWN COMMAND - APPLICATION TERMINATING

    HI All,
We have an Planning application and when the user is trying to perform some activity and ti involves in running some calculation Scripts.
At point the application is going down and this is causing real mess.
There is no .xcp file created in the app folder. We are unable to find the root cause of the issue.
the following are the fixes we tried but gave us no result.
We tried to increase the Java Heep size
    <variable id="ESS_CSS_JVM_OPTION8" value="-Xms512m"/>
    <variable id="ESS_CSS_JVM_OPTION9" value="-Xmx1024m"/>
    But the issue still exists.

    Hi Mady,
    Thanks for the reply.
We have increased the Heap size and restarted the services. But this issue still exists. And also restarted the entire system but the result is the same.
We are unable to find the root cause which is causing this issue.
    Can any one suggest me....

  • Finalizers + abnormal shutdown

I have read some notes about this, but I want to be sure: Some people in this forum have written that on an abnormal shutdown of the VM, not all finalizers are called. I have some questions about it:
    1. Is this true?
    2. Is it an implementation bug, or allowed by the VM spec / JLS? I have found this in the JLS:
The Java programming language does not specify how soon a finalizer will be invoked, except to say that it will happen before the storage for the object is reused.
Since storage for the object will certainly be re-used after termination of the VM, finalizers must be called before shutdown according to the JLS, right? Any pointer to contrary information would be nice.
    3. If finalizers are not guaranteed to be called, what is their use? The typical action of a finalizer would be to de-allocate some system resource (close a file or network connection, release the graphics or sound hardware, etc). No sane programmer would leave such important tasks to an unreliable mechanism. So if finalizers are unreliable, where are they useful?
    Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by "abnormal shutdown of the JVM"?I do not mean killing the VM process at the OS level. It's something that comes from "inside the VM". But I don't know what it is exactly, as I was only pointed in that direction by posts in this forum. System.exit? Exceptions? Don't know what.

  • Abnormal Shutdown in App when conducting training

Every time we conduct an Essbase Excel Add-In training class, the application that we are training in abnormally shuts down many times. The app does not appear to be corrupted and does not have problems outside of the class times. None of our other apps have problems during these times. Our classroom pc's are using network hubs and I'm guessing that these abnormal shutdowns have something to do with the fact that so many users are trying to touch the server/app at the same time going through the same network connection. The .xcp file appears to be almost identical every time. Below is an exerpt from the .xcp file:----- Exception Error Log Begin -----Current Date & Time: Thu Mar 20 13:11:41 2003Process Type: ApplicationApplication Name: SldfinDatabase Name: SldfinException Log File: D:\HYPERION\ESSBASE\app\Sldfin\Sldfin\log00012.xcpCurrent Thread Id: 514Exception Code: 0xC0000005=Access ViolationException Flags: 0x00000000=ContinuableException Address: 0x00523427Exception Parameters: 2Exception Parameter 0: 0x00000000=Read Violation Exception Parameter 1: 0x00000020 (Virtual Address)We have NETDELAY 5000 and NETRETRYCOUNT 1000 set in our essbase.cfg. Our server version is 6.2.1, the client versions are 6.0 and 6.2.1 (happens with either client version).Has anyone else experienced this? If so, is there any way to change the essbase.cfg or server o/s (Win NT) settings to avoid this problem? Thanks in advance.

When your sever is dead, there isn't anything there to run and all the connections are lost.
On the client side you will have to look for the disconnect, timeout, or some other exception so you know not to continue trying to connect to a dead server socket.

  • Can't read disk label: Booting Blade from CDROM

    Folks !
I am trying to boot Sun Blade 100 from its internal IDE CD-ROM drive
using the Solaris 8 boot/installation CD (01/01). When I give the command
"boot cdrom" from ok fromt in OpenBoot, disk seems to spin for a moment
(green light comes on) but it eventually fails complaining:
    can't read disk label
    can'open disk label package
    failed to open boot device.
I have tried following (all to no avail)
"boot /pci@1f,0/ide@d/cdrom@1,0:f" since devalias shows that cdrom is aliased to above. I also tried cdrom@0,0:f, but same result.
tried boot/installation CD from Solaris 9
    did set-defaults reset-all
checked probe-ide and show disks output to make sure CDROM is recognized - it is primary slave.
swapped another IDE CD-ROM drived pulled from a PC. It was recognized but still not bootable.
Makes me wonder if PROM/NVRAM is corrupted. Hard disk
drive is trashed as such (another Blade 100 problem, since it was crashing
often, I had to force powerdown using the switch eventually leading
to corruption of basic files like /usr/lib/libnsl.so.1, so I can't force fsck)
I have to boot from CD to recover the machine and hopefully
repair the disk drive or swap it out and upgrade to Solaris 9.
    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks very much.

as per the message it appears either you have a bad CD drive or CD media . If you have another machine try to boot this CD and verify it is working there. If the CD is ok you will have to swap the cd drive for testing

  • Fsck from instal dvd

    Hi all
My daughter is in China with her trusty iBook but after a most recent update ended at grey screen on restart and no progress.
    Two questions.
Sent her the Install dvd to run Disk Utility but it reported Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
A topic of that titlle in the Tiger discussion area suggested single user mode and fsck but we had already tried that and can't get single user mode.
The hope is to run fsck from the terminal on the boot dvd but can anyone tell the correct name for the drive in the ibook.
    I'm hoping something like
    fsck /dev/????
will maybe get her up and running.
    Second question.
I read in one thread, that I now can't find again, that apart from Norton and Techtool there is data recovery tool which like Diskwarrior does just one thing but does it very well.
Can anyone tell me what that is or point me to the thread ?
    Many thanks
    Kind Regards
    Eric

    >A topic of that titlle in the Tiger discussion area suggested single user mode and fsck but we had already tried that and can't get single user mode.
You can invoke use single-user mode by holding Command-S during power up or, since you've booting from DVD, just choose 'Terminal' from the application menu once the installer loads up.
    >I'm hoping something like
    fsck /dev/????
The best solution is to run diskutil list which will give you a list of the disks the OS sees, along with the device IDs you can pass to fsck
    >I read in one thread, that I now can't find again, that apart from Norton and Techtool there is data recovery tool which like Diskwarrior does just one thing but does it very well.
    You mean other than DiskWarrior?
It's the only tool I use, and it's solved numerous problems for me - more so than any other tool.

  • My 27" iMac (2009) won't boot OSX from the internal drive

Here's a fun problem. After installing Sophos anti-virus and starting a (VERY slow) full scan, a day or two later I found my iMac frozen at the screensaver. It was completely unresponsive so I did a hard reboot, at which point it got as far as starting to boot Lion (apple logo on screen, spinning indicator showing) before stalling indefinitely in that state with the indicator spinning.
I restarted and booted from the recovery partition, launched disk utility, and discovered that the SMART status of the drive was "failing". The machine would still boot from the recovery partition and my boot camp partition, but I assumed that the disk failing was why the OSX partition wouldn't boot (the recovery partition worked, as did the windows 7 bootcamp partition). I replaced the factory-installed internal HDD with another of the same make, model, and capacity (Seagate 1TB), and performed a restore from the Time Machine backup on my Drobo.
The result was the same as the original problem - it wouldn't boot, hung with the indicator spinning. Thinking that the Sophos scan was somehow responsible (in-progress when the last TM backup was made) I tried restoring to a backup a few days older, (to the best of my recall from BEFORE I downloaded Sophos) only to have the same result.
Anyone have any ideas? I made a clean install of Lion (using the recovery partition on my old internal HDD, now connected externally via USB) to an external drive while I was waiting for the replacement hard disk to arrive, and it boots fine from that. I haven't tried a clean install to the internal HDD yet, as I'd obviously prefer to recover my installed apps as they were before, that being the point of a Time Machine backup, right?

You have a serious drive issue that likely can't be repaired that way.
Follow the data recovery efforts here, your drive still works and thus data can be recovered, won't be easy
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3172
If you have your data off the machine, to a storage drive (or earlier with TM)

  • Will not boot up from DVD drive

HP pavilion slimline s3200n will recognize the DVD drive but it will not boot up from the drive

    Hi,
Try hitting the escape button from boot up. It normally gives you the boot options where you can select the DVD drive.
If you can't get into the boot options, try getting into the bios with F10 and change boot order options.
    Greetings

  • 2005 mac mini on OSX leopard will not boot up from firewire disk

I have an old mac mini that my son still uses and the super dirve does not work any more. But now the main hard disk needs to some attention from Disk Utility. So I need to boot up from the Leopard install DVD. But of course the DVD dirve does not work so how to do this? I have tried to create a bootable disk by restoring the install DVD to a partition on a firewire drive and this is seen as a bootable drive by my 2008 iMac, but not by the Mac Mini. So is it possible to boot up rom a irewire drive? USB doesn't work either

Which Tiger Install DVD do you have...?
    1. I think that, that model originally came with 10.4.10 and so you will need either the original 10.4.10 install disc or a later retail (Leopard or Snow Leopard) upgrade DVD.
    2. In addition, a new (HDD, Hybrid Drive or SSD) must first be Partitioned GUID Partition Table and Formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before OS X can be installed.
