Boot hangs at the "Removing Leftover Files" stage
I just set up my /var on reiser4 again but i have a weird issue.
When i boot my 2.6.11-cko2 kernel it hangs at the "Removing Leftover Files" stage but it boots fine with 2.6.11-cko4 and boots fine with an old 2.6.9-nitro4.
So it can't be permissions can it? I used the same config for the -cko4 kernel as I used for -cko2 so they are configured the same.
And I can't just switch to -cko4 because that annoying cdrecord crash is back AGAIN!
I've got a new install (first time I've installed Arch, BTW -- and I'm fairly impressed) that is doing the same thing. My filesystems are ext3, for what that's worth. Usually when it hangs I can hard reboot the system and it will go past it on the restart, but I've had a couple of times where it has hung on consecutive boots. Would it be worth hacking that part of rc.sysinit to see if it is a specific step in the process that is causing the hang?
EDIT: I've gone ahead and added stat_busy/stat_done calls around each of the steps in that part of the boot process in rc.sysinit, as of late yesterday to see if there is any consistency on where the hang occurs. Interestingly -- or not, perhaps, I haven't had it hang yet... I'll keep an eye on it, and post more if I see a pattern.

[SOLVED] "removing leftover files" boot messages
When I boot, there's a line saying "removing leftover files" : what it is referring to, exactly? What are those leftover files?

Software update is stuck at "Removing old files"
Last night Software update informed me there were a few things to update. (I believe Safari was in there as well as a couple of things I was not using)
No reboot was required, so I started the install.
My system started really slowing down and was painful after a while. I shecked and Software Update was "Installing 3 items" and "Removing old files" - this was about an hour after starting the update.
Well, that was about 16 hours ago and it is still in the same state and with the same message and the same spot on the status line.
I am reluctant yo force quite Software update as I do not want to cause instability.
Any ideas?
(Or is it OK to force quit when it is just at the "Removing old files" stage?)
This is on a MacBook ProYou have no choice but to force a reboot and see what happens.

K7D Master L & Promise FastTrak SX4000 boot hang
I am having major trouble getting a Promise FastTrak SX4000 RAID controller to work with a K7D Master-L (MSI-6501-030). I would appreciate any and all input, especially from those of you who have similar or identical hardware (same motherboard/chipset, same RAID controller or similar Promise card) and are able to get them working.
Brief description :
The SX4000 controller will hang at the IDE drive detection stage when installed on this board alone (plus an AGP video card) or alongside various combinations of PCI adapters, in various PCI slots available, and using various BIOS settings. The SX4000 appears to work fine in another Intel chipset system with the same AGP video cards. Both the motherboard and the SX4000 controller appear to have the latest BIOSes available.
Symptoms :
When the system is turned on with the SX4000 controller installed, it completes POST successfully, then loads the Promise FastTrak BIOS from the SX4000, and stalls after displaying "Scanning for IDE drives". Waiting for extended periods of time verifies the system is just 'stuck' here. It appears to be a 'hang' rather than a 'freeze', since the keyboard continues to operate and Ctrl-Alt-Del will still reboot the system at this point. The D-LED diagnostic LED bracket indicates (according to the included user manual), the system is at the "Initializing Hard Drive Controller" stage at this point.
The system continues to boot fine if the SX4000 controller is not installed.
The SX4000 controller functions fine on another system, a Dell OptiPlex GX400--a Pentium 4-based system built around the Intel i850 chipset. This OptiPlex GX400 has only a TNT RIVA 128 AGP video card installed, but has built-in audio and NIC. The SX4000 controller also works in this system using a GeForce2 MX TwinView AGP video card as well as a GeForce FX5600 AGP video card. It does not work on the K7D Master-L with either card, with the following exception. With only the TNT RIVA 128 AGP video card, it will in fact scan for IDE drives (indicated by ~10 - 15 dots/periods, ".", displayed after the "Scanning for IDE drives" message), but then will also hang as soon as the scan is complete without additional messages.
All of the above is true whether hard disks are connected to the SX4000 controller or not.
Disclaimer : I am not a newbie. I've built hundreds of systems over the past 10 years and know what I am talking about. :)
What I have tried so far, and what I've been able to determine :
I have gone through quite a bit of research about this. I've tried both Promise and MSI Web sites (both US and Taiwan), the Web at large through Google, as well as various newsgroups including alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.msi-microstar through Google, the MSI forums on their Web site, the AMDMB Forums, 2CPU forums, HardForum, AnandTech Forums, SysOpt forums, and Tom's Hardware Community. While there are many posts about the AMD 760MPX chipsets and various Promise RAID and non-RAID IDE controller cards, none describes my problem exactly. Hence my posting here.
o There isn't a problem with the DIMM I am using on the SX4000. It's a 256 MB PC133 DIMM, with 8 HT33S328256K (32Mx8) DRAM chips on it. I am certain it's not a problem because the card works as expected in the Dell OptiPlex GX400 with the same DIMM. I have also tried a 64 MB PC100 DIMM (Crucial) and there is no difference--the SX4000 controller hangs the K7D Master-L, but works with the OptiPlex GX400.
o Moving the card around to different PCI slots on the K7D Master-L doesn't make a difference, if only so to avoid a problem with a shared interrupt. I have tried the board in all 5 available PCI slots--the upper two 66MHz/64-bit PCI slots as well as the lower three 33MHz/32-bit PCI slots. I have looked at the IRQ assignment scheme for this board, and tried putting the SX4000 (alone or with other PCI cards--see configuration info at the end) in the first PCI slot, next to the AGP slot such that it doesn't share an IRQ with the video card. No luck. I have also tried the lowest PCI slot (#5), which should have a distinct IRQ ideally, based on the above scheme, but that also makes no difference.
o Disabling various components, including all on-board peripherals (audio, LAN, serial, parallel, and USB ports, legacy USB emulation, ACPI), disabling all caching/shadowing (video/system BIOS) makes no difference.
o The SX4000 controller came with the latest available BIOS according to the Promise Web site (http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=94&category=All&os=100), v1.02.0.5. Just for the hell of it, I copied the controller BIOS from the flash ROM to an image using Promise's own PFLASH.EXE utility and file-compared it with the latest BIOS on the Web site to ensure they are exactly the same.
o The K7D Master-L came with BIOS v1.6, which, according to MSI's US (search for the K7D Master L) or Taiwanese (lists a v1.82, but I am hesitant since it doesn't recommend or caution against using it on the -L model of the motherboard) Web sites is not available. These list either v1.3 or v1.5 (the latter for the K7D Master) as the latest available that I can verify for K7D Master-L.
o I tried downgrading the SX4000 controller BIOS to the other, earlier one available on the Promise Web site, to v1.01.0.15. No changes. The card still doesn't work in any slot on the K7D Master-L, and works fine in any slot on the OptiPlex GX400.
o There *are* people on these forums who have similar systems, some with the same motherboard and controller, others with the same motherboard and similar cards like the FastTrak SX6000 who apparently are able to make it work. I know this only because they have open threads on other issues and happen to provide their configuration info. For example:

What I have not done :
o I have not tried downgrading the BIOS on the K7D Master-L to an earlier (pre-1.6) version. I don't know if this is wise, though, considering this appears to be a newer (with working USB 1.x) revision of the motherboard that might minimally need the BIOS currently on it.
o I have not tried another SX4000 controller card, which I do not have. However, the card working fine on the OptiPlex GX400 indicates to me clearly that there isn't a functional problem per se on the card itself.
o No components are overclocked.
What I suspect :
o The fact that the two GeForce-based cards behave slightly differently than the TNT RIVA 128 (see above about how the hang occurs slightly later with the latter card) indicates to me that the problem is some combination of the motherboard, RAID controller, and video card conflicting (conspiring?) together. I am looking for the plainest AGP video card I have around to further test this.
o There appears to be a resource conflict *or* a BIOS/handover problem going on. It's not likely an IRQ conflict/sharing issue, since on the OptiPlex GX400, the SX4000 happily shares an IRQ with the video card (verified through the BIOS). The resources the SX4000 uses when on the OptiPlex GX400, as seen through its own BIOS/array utility are:
Installed Memory Address FF1F8000 Size 256M
Controller IRQ9
ATA IO Address EC00
XOR and HDMA IO Address E800
Sequence Control IO Address E400
Flash and SRAM Memory Address FF200000
I do not know which of these are retained as is when in the K7D Master-L (the IRQ certainly isn't necessarily retained, but don't know about the rest). I also am not able to easily check for a conflict with these. I can verify that as Windows XP can see it (which does assign its own resources via ACPI, of course,) there are not system or motherboard resources overlapping with any of these.
Also note this older K7T issue that may be relevant
What I need help with :
If you have a K7D Master-L and an SX4000, SX6000, or other similar Promise controller, please let me know how your system is configured.
What other peripherals, particularly video card do you have?
Which slots are all the cards in, particularly the SX4000?
What BIOS version of the K7D Master-L are you using?
What BIOS version is the SX4000?
Many thanks in advance,
MacGyverHi, I believe of having your same problem..sorry, I do not speak well English,
this is my system:
Mainboard Microstar MSI K7D MasterL chipset AMD 761MPX
CPU dual AMD MP2400+
RAM 2x512 Corsair pc2100 ECC Reg.
Primary Master DVD Rom Toshiba SD-M1712

BIOS FASTRACK SX4000 1.02.0.5
RAM Dimm 256Mb (test OK)
this is my problem:
1) the HD in master or slave the HD do not come recognized from the bios of the fastrack..HD not found..control cables ide or current
2) cable select or removing jumper from the HD the these they come recognized, it allows to make the Array (tried raid 5, 0 and the 1) ago boot of the fastrack but at the moment of the boot from floppy or cd rom (as from bios of the mainboard) remains the underscore that flashes. The PC is not of an all out..con ctrl+alt+del reboot.
3) tried to use also only 2 of aforesaid the HD, invert channel, user also channel 4, same problems
4) it recognizes the HD in master if I mount cables IDE to the contrary.. with the blue connector on the HD..ma remains problem of the boot from floppy or cd
5) I have tried to install others 2 not new HD (samsung 6,4 Gb + seagate4,6 Gb)..il fastrack recognizes them also in master..it allows the Array in raid 0 or raid1 but it remains the problem of the boot from floppy or cd.
6) tried to move fastrack on other slot Pci (also on one of those to 33Mhz) identical problems
7) bios mainboard all ok..also why if I do not make array..part the boot from floppy or cdrom..also if then to the fine ones it says nonexistent disc to me (lacks the Array..)
8) changed to cables courrent..do not creed is that one the problem..Enermax 460W..e then if septum in a determined way jumper the recognized HD
9) modernized bios..le tests son been made it is with that old one that with last (the 1.02.0.5)
10) tried to use other cable 80 pin connecting a single HD WD in master..l' HD it is not recognized!
11) tried also to detach controller USB
12) moved reader DVD in primary slave and also in secondary (it is master that slave)
13) mounted same fastrack SX4000 on other pc..same problems
14) I have modernized bios to version 1,3 (last the available on the site US..on the taiwanese site is version 1,82 but I do not trust myself)
15) I do not know what other to make!
I have read on the situated one that not there were problems of incompatible with my Mainboard and was compatible with HD Western WD0800BB (80 GB and 2 Digital Mb of buffer) and with WD1200JB (120Gb and 8 Mb of buffer)..i 8 WD0800JB are 80Gb and have Mb of buffer..but creed are not a problem of HD..inasmuch as the problems remain also changing discs (seagate and samsung).
I absolutely have need of this PC for job
if it finds one solution..please it makes to know me! ;( thanks -
Solaris 10 is hanging during boot from the OpenBoot firmware on my T1. Below is the output from doing an interactive boot from OpenBoot using the "boot -a" command. I use the default values for all options and the boot hangs after the root device is specified.
I'm rather new to Solaris so this problem has me stuck. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi, I've got a V100 server at my company that has Solaris 8 installed on it (I now, very old). One of our staff tried to install LDAP user authentication on our domain and set this server to be a client. This all went very badly and I'm trying to recover the system, the problem is that this server now hangs at boot very early on at the domain resolution. when I reset the machine the boot hangs at the below output
checking ufs filesystems
/dev/rdsk/c0t2d0s6: is stable.

NIS domainname is ingena.localHow can I fix this? would like to change the nsswitch.conf file so it stops looking for LDAP and NIS servers but I can't get onto the disk to edit this. Any ideas???Having just had a grand old time (not!) with deploying Directory Server (my 64 page installation and troubleshooting manual will be forthcoming very soon), I believe (but I won't say that I'm certain) that your problem is one of a few things, all of which can build on each other:
* The client cannot connect to the directory server and is sitting there waiting for a response
* You are attempting to resolve root through LDAP, as in the system is looking to LDAP first instead of local /etc files (bad idea!)
* Your pam.conf settings are incorrect and thus cannot resolve the "root" user, thereby making it impossible to continue to run the startup scripts
* Your nsswitch.conf file is configured to communicate through LDAP first instead of the appropriate order causing the inability to resolve host names properly. (See below.)
As to the NIS domainname issue, that only means that it found an entry in /etc/defaultdomain. That doesn't necessarily mean that you're still running NIS. In fact, chances are that you're not utilizing NIS any more. When you initialize an LDAP server, the ldapclient command makes a very arrogant and stupid assumtion that every bloody thing in /etc/nsswitch.conf will somehow be resolved through LDAP - netmasks, bootparams, ethers, hosts, etc.
So, follow these guidelines:
* Keep root local. Do not rely on LDAP. If you store root in LDAP, (A) the client can't boot if the LDAP server is down because root cannot be resolved and (B) anyone who breaks into the LDAP server could get the keys to all of your castles.
* As soon as you initialize a client, change the /etc/nsswitch.conf file back to what it should be. Too many functions (like NTP) break unless you import ALL of your relevant /etc files into LDAP, which is a very, very, VERY stupid assumption for Sun to make.
Regardless, boot into single-user mode and look at the nsswitch.conf file. If that doesn't give anything really viable, run each startup script individually to see which one is causing the problem. -

Tried to find the com.apple.mail.plist file, but I connot find any such file in the Preferences folder.
Any suggestions to help me out of this? -
Do removing an extension fully removed it from the computer or does it leave leftover files?
So I installed a extension for Firefox.
And then I removed it.
I want to know if removing a extension leave leftover files or things of that sort on your computer still or does removing a firefox extension fully remove everything associated with that extension?It depends upon the extension. When an extension is uninstalled the folder containing that extension is removed. Some extensions will add files outside of this folder and they may not be removed. Additionally some extensions add details of their settings/poreferences to the Firefox preferences file and these will normally not be removed.

Boot Camp does not have the "remove" option
PLEASE DISREGARD THE QUESTION. IN CASE YOU WONDER BOOT CAMP ASSISTANT APPLICATION OFFERED ME TO REMOVE WINDOWS AFTER THE FILEVAULT DECRYPTION WAS COMPLETED AND SYSTEM REBOOT.
I was installing Windows and while at the expanding files stage I stopped the installation (don't ask me why) and then I waited for a while with the hope that I will be prompted to a "installation has been stopped" or similar screen but it did not happen. Then I had to shut down by holding down the power off button.
Now Windows appears to be installed in the opening screen as well as the Startup Disk application. However when I open the Boot Camp Assistant application, removing Windows option is not available. Instead, installing option is available.
Knowing that one should remove the bootcamp partition via the Boot Camp Assistant application rather than Disk Utility, I am now totally unsure about how I must proceed. (I know internet recovery of the OS is an option, but frankly that's my last resort).Boot from your Windows installer disc. Reinstall Windows. After it finishes you can decide whether you wish to keep it.

Hi,
A WebLogic 10.3.2.0 server is hanging at startup. There are no error messages. The last command in the startup window is:
"The server log file <log file dest> is opened. All server side log events will be written to this file."
I think the next line should be:
"Security initializing using security realm realm."
Any ideas on what could be the issue? For instance what resources should be accessed at that point of time? There is sufficient space left on the (virtual machine) disk. The VM configured with 8GB memory. Could it be performance related still?
Following is written to the log file:

I can't seem to remove / unload the external swf files e.g when the carousel.swf (portfolio) is displayed and I press the about button the about content is overlapping the carousel (portfolio) . How can I remove / unload an external swf file from the main flash file and load a new swf file, while at the same time removing garbage collection from memory?
This is the error message(s) I am receiving: "TypeError: Error #2007: Parameter child must be non-null.

Thank you for the helpful advice. I made the changes as you suggested but I am receiving a #1009 error message even though my site is working the way I wan it to work. I would still like to fix the errors so that my site runs and error free. This is the error I am receiving:
"TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference."
I'm sure this is not the best method to unload loaders and I am guessing this is why I am receiving the following error message.
loader.unload();
loader2.unload();
loader3.unload();
I also tried creating a function to unload the loader but received the same error message and my portfolio swf was not showing at all.
function killLoad():void{
try { loader.close(); loader2.close; loader3.close;} catch (e:*) {}
loader.unload(); loader2.unload(); loader3.unload();
I have a question regarding suggestion you made to set Mouse Event to "null". What does this do setting the MouseEvent do exactly? Also, since I've set the MouseEvent to null do I also have to set the loader to null? e.g.
---- Here is my updated code ----
// variable for external loaders
var loader:Loader;
var loader1:Loader;
var loader2:Loader;
var loader3:Loader;
// makes borders resize with browser size
function resizeHandler(event:Event):void {
// resizes portfolio page to center
loader.x = (stage.stageWidth - loader.width) * .5;
loader.y = (stage.stageHeight - loader.height) * .5;
// resizes about page to center
loader3.x = (stage.stageWidth - 482) * .5 - 260;
loader3.y = (stage.stageHeight - 492) * .5 - 140;
//adds gallery.swf to stage at begining of moviie

//PORTFOLIO BUTTON
//adds eventlistner so that gallery.swf can be loaded

I used "my documents" for the profile folder, I removed the profile and firefox asked if i want to remove its file, and it took ALL my file except a few, all my photographs etc, are these now unrecoverable? as they are not in the recycle bin
disaster, thanks firefox 1 year of photos lostThanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
I'm back to normal again. -
Over the last few days Mozilla Firefox has been hanging every few seconds. I updated the squite.places file as instructed which seems to have corrected the problem, however it has had a side effect. I can no longer see the comments on newspaper sites, e.g. The Times, the Independent both of which I believe use Disqus. Does anyone know how to fix this?
You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Windows Vista 7. When I double click on Setup 6.0.exe file, it goes thru the file extraction, and prompts to reboot to remove old files. (The old files have been previously removed.) The computer restarts and no continuation of loading vs. 6. Then I proceed to click on Firefox Setup 6.o and click RUN. Goes thru set ups steps and then repeats "you computer must be restarted to complete uninstall of Firefox. Do you want to reboot?". If YES, then process repeats itself, if NO, it terminates the installation. Same results with IE and Google Chrome.
If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 6.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
* Uninstall your current Firefox version.
* Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox. -
I have a MacBook Pro (purchased in 2011) with OS X Lion 10.7.4. I'm using Microsoft Office 2011 and cannot open older PowerPoint Files (non .pptx). It will always open the same .pptx file and then the machine hangs up and just keeps spinning.
Thank you - that all makes sense. It is, indeed, exactly what I did when I upgraded.
I'm also writing this on the machine that crashed a few minutes ago (I posted the crash in another thread). I got back with a 'safe boot' - as I have done a few times before.
I've also de-installed little snitch (and then done a safe-boot & then re-boot ) since that seemed involved. I de-installed Adobe flash, since that seemed to be a problem - I then re-installed the later, apparently fixed, flash. The most recent crashes don't seeme to have a problem with flash any more.
I've posted the various ( generally different ) crashes. I also posted a summary of the similar lines that turn up in most of the crashes.
Unfortuantely, I'm actually trying to use the machine to meet some urgent deadlines and all this is not making it at all easy.
I had had great hopes for 10.7.2 - I thought that the crashes must be pretty common, so would have a common aetiology. There do seem to have been some fundamental changes to the file sytem and to the video interface (that seems to cause problems to brand new iMacs as well as to my 2009 iMac).
