Boot into something other than hard drive
I'm having problems partitioning in boot camp, so I read that I should defrag my drive. I'm getting the error because it can't move certain files.
So I'm using iDefrag, but it won't let me use most of the defrag options because I'm using the disk it is defraging. I tried to boot using the leopard disk that came with my macbook, but I can only use certain programs while this disk is open.
What do I need to do to boot into something other than the hard drive to defrag?

Since this How-To was written for OSX Tiger you might consider getting a bigger sized USB-Stick for the space OSX Leopard needs.

Can't boot into OSX from different Hard Drive
Hi,
I am having a problem booting into OSX.
I put my own HDD into my Macbook when I first got it and everything was fine, no problems. But recently I took it out to keep my data safe and put back in the old HDD and reinstall OSX Snow Leopard onto the old HDD. After this completed I put back the one I had purchased myself but upon starting the laptop a bar appeared at the bottom of the Apple startup logo and after disappearing the system did not get any further.
I put my my Snow Leopard CD after this to repair and check the disk and then came the errors that It was corrupt and could not be repaired and that I should try to back up as much data as possible.
My question is, is there anyway to boot from this HDD again without reformatting it? and if I do have to reformat it, can I place it into an enclosure to get the data off?
The HDD was working perfectly with no reported errors until I put in the old HDD and made a new installation on it.

FrancisAfter looking for answers and phoning Apple I have ended up having to reformat. For those who also have this problem:
I have heard that running Disk Repair multiple times works, try booting into safe mode and try fsck in single user mode. My solution was just to connect the hard drive via USB so I could at least get all my data off of it.

Booting Into Real-Time From Hard Drive
Hello,
We have a system that is real-time compliant, as said so by the pceval software that NI has on their website, that will not boot into real-time OS from the hard drive. It can boot into RTOS with the floppy boot disk, but for some reason it can not do it from the hard drive alone. We made a format hard drive disk and run it and it says that it succussfully installs the files and tell us to reboot. When we do so the system has a short blinking line and just sits there, almost like the system is being haulted. We have formatted the hard drive many times using the format hard drive disk and we have even tried other floppies thinking that the disk was bad. We don't understand why it could boot into the RTOS from the floppy but not from the hard drive itself. The only thing I can think of is that the disk isn't writing the right MBR to the hard drive and it's not getting directions to boot. I have been working on this for quite some time, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
MichaelWe have actually figured it out, after many long days. You just install the RTOS like Labview says and make sure it is the first partition. Whether that is on another hard drive that is the master or if it is actually the first partition of the drive. We had two seperate drives and we were running Windows as the Master and the Labview RTOS as the slave. When we switched them it worked. Also, doing a long format (Not Quick Format) also fixed the situation. For a bootloader we are using GAG, THE GRAPHICAL BOOT MANAGER which can be found for free on google. Thank you for your help.

Installing Photoshop on something other than C drive?
Ok...I have a new PC and I am installing PS CS6 and LR5.
I installed it on a different drive because my C drive only has 8gig left (my C drive is an SSD and I only have the OS on it).
Now when I try to open PS, it gives me this error: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005)."
LR is now doing the samething (bridge works fine). I tried rebooting, and a few times they both opened right after a reboot. Then I would close them and re-open them and I got the error....now it seems to NOT work every time I try.
Was this because I didn't install it on the C drive?
I really need HELP getting this to work...please respond ASAP....I would appreciate the help!!I'm trying to remember some of the things I have moved off the C drive over the years.

Hidden folders like Appdata can be huge. That's where I found most space in my most recent efforts. You need to show hidden files in folder options to see these (I am still assuming you are a PC user) but way better to use WinDirStat
[EDIT] Have a hunt round the Premiere Pro Hardware forum for system optimization FAQs. Harm Millaard said he found 5Gb just by deleting the language and legal folders, but there are a ton of them, and they are pretty small taken one at a time.
As Chris said, your OS absolutely needs free space on the C drive to function efficiently. If you use WinDirStat you’ll find Windows already has a bunch of space reserved for the Pagefile (I am still assuming Windows) and I guess it won’t need space for defragging with an SSD, but 8Gb simply isn’t going to cut it. Not by miles!!! -
Assign boot drive letter to something other than C
When setting up XP Mode, is there any way to assign the boot drive to something other than C? I know once it's set up it's next to impossible to change, but there should be a way to assign it during setup. Any ideas??

Why do you want to change system drive letter in Windows XP mode? As you said, you're not allowed to do that. Based on my test, you can succeed in changing this drive letter C: to other letters through registry, after you attach another virtual disk
(eg E:) into XP. However, It will damage your XP system, which proves not to be a good solution provided in Internet. So I recommend you not to change this letter.

My Mac G4 MDD no longer shows the start up hard drive icon. The one with all my files on!
It shows the other 3 hard drive icons and boots up OK.

Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop -> Hard disks
The startup disk is sometimes treated differently from other disks (such as external and network disks) and I'm guessing this is a simple preference setting, although I might be wrong. -
I get kernel paic upon boot. I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion. What about memory? Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory? I have 8 G of upgraded RAM. (20 inch iMac core 2 duo)
If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

How do I assign a file to a drive other than the drive that contains my program software?
I've just installed a video editing program on my new Mac Pro Xeon 64 bit workstation. I want to ensure that all my media files reside on a drive other than the drive that contains programs. I had no problem doing this on my old Dell. How do I do this on my Mac Pro? -- Gary

Most people do setup with a dedicated boot drive with OS and apps, .then use other drives or array(s) for media, scratch as needed, including external hardware RAID. -
Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation and after having selected both my destination and source drives, the operation begins but soon fails due to input/output error. If I try to create an image of the drive it gives me the same error message. Any help would be much appreciated.
Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)

Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?

Do you have a compatible OSX installed on this 'storage' HDD? If not, it will not boot your MBP.

Has anyone encountered similar issue while configuring dg4odbc....I never had trouble with hsodbc. Since hsodbc is desupported , We are evaluating dg4odbc and openlink odbc
drivers to establish connectivity to mysql and stuck at this point.

Yes, you can and I do. The proviso is that the external hard drive is connected by firewire, as a PPC Mac cannot boot via USB. -
Can I change the view of videos from thumbnails to details or something other than thumbnails?
I loaded a couple of tv series and movies into my ipad air 2 and when I click on the videos app they all appear as thumbnails. I was wondering if someone could help me change the view to maybe details or something other than thumbnails just so I can view what tv series I have. I couldn't find any option any where on the screen or in settings on changing the view. Please help
Ok nevermind I managed to sort it out.. had to change the type of video and sort the shows with their seasons. pretty long process.

Install OCS R2 on something other than Redhat AS 2.1?
I have a test environment I want to set up for OCS Release 2 9.0.4.1, but I'd like to do it on something other than Redhat Advanced Server 2.1. I saw a Note or something on Metalink a couple of days ago on how to trick runInstaller into thinking the OS is Redhat AS, but tonight when looking for this document I cannot find it.
Does anybody know how to do this? I'm downloading a developer edition of UnitedLinux right now, but I'm really interested in attempting to install the single-box install on Mandrake 9.1. One reason because I'm more familiar with that distribution, and also because I'm curious to see if it will work.

Can't rememeber the case, but if you run the runInstaller and pass an option or perhaps -? or -help it will show you a whole bunch of options.
