Boot issue after shutdown plus power - no problem after restart or after removing power cord
Hello,
I have a Pavilion Elite m9275.nl desktop. I experience boot issues after a regular shut down.
After a regular shut down and pressing the power button within a few seconds/minutes, it keeps hanging in the HP startup / BIOS screen, Windows 8 won't boot, the hard drive light doesn't flash;
After a restart from Windows (instead of shut down) it boots correctly from the c-drive. No hard-drive problems at all;
After a shut down and removing the power cord for 10-15 minutes, it boots correctly from the c-drive. No hard-drive problems at all.
When the PC does not boot, F10 (to enter BIOS settings) does not work neither, so it seems to be a hardware or BIOS issue.
I already replaced the CMOS battery and already loaded default BIOS settings.
During a succesful boot or after pressing F10 (to enter BIOS settings) the screen shows some disk information right after the BIOS. This is the screen that says something like "press CTRL-I to start configuration utility". During a succesful boot the hard disk light flashes shortly before displaying that screen. During an unsuccesful boot the hard disk doesn't flash.
Before replacing a hardware component, I need to know what to replace...
Could it be the hard disk controller or hard disk is defect?
Where is the hard disk controller stored?
Can I upgrade the firmware of the hard disk controller?
BUT: why does it work when I remove the power cord for 15 minutes or after a restart (instead of a shutdown and than pressing power)?

This JUST started happening only 4 days ago.
Most recent installation was Limewire, but I removed it to see if this problem would go away.
I have 3 internal drives (See drive types below) that all have OS 10 on them in order to be able to boot up from either drive in the event of trouble.
However...
No matter WHICH drive I use as the start up drive... the computer STILL restarts itself after it is properly commanded to shut down.
Prior to the Limewire install... the ADOBE creative suite was installed.
There is a Lexmark X83 printer hooked to the computer, which, it seems doesn't matter if it is left on or off... the computer still restarts itself.
Any ideas?

If you still have problems, trash the following three preference files, then shut down and do a PMU reset. (PMU reset procedure for the QS is the same as is shown at the link for the Gigabit Ethernet.)

Power supply problem a little better after unplugging imac for 24 hours
Hello,
I'm currently having power supply problems (at least I hope it's the power supply and not the mother board), similar to many others I've seen on these boards. What I've noticed is that if I unplug my iMac for about 24 hours I can get it to run again for a little while. Unplugging it for a few minutes (or even 8 hours) doesn't seem to help. My iMac won't get much further than the starting chime before it loses power. But it seems to me that unplugging it for 24 hours has gotten me between 5 days to 5 hours of use before I unexpectedly lose power.
Is there anything to account for this or am I just imagining things? Ultimately, I don't think the answer will help me much, but I am curious to know. I'm taking my iMac to a Mac Genius tomorrow to see if they can help diagnose the problem. I saw a little hit in my video today, which was a first, so I suspect the problem may be getting worse. I'll probably be buying a new power supply soon.I'm having the same problem. They say to restart you have to unplug the power, wait 10 seconds and then plug it back in but apparently it's not enough. I have to unplug for about 30 seconds, plug back in, and wait anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours before it'll start up again properly. The last time I had this issue was in october '06- when I had a new logic board and power supply put in. Now I'm worried because my applecare is expired by about 3 months. I bought the computer in feb. '05. I hope a new board doesn't cost more than what the computer itself is worth but I'm afraid that'll be the case...

Successfully installed Oracle Linux 6.4 operating system , which subsequently runs as expected.
When Oracle Linux 6.4 is shutdown using standard GUI system/shutdown ,
it does a clean shutdown and power-off as expected ....
UNTIL some 10 minutes or so later , when Oracle Linux 6.4 reboots all by itself from a fully powered-down state.
Likewise when Oracle Linux 6.4 is shutdown using standard command line " shutdown -h now" ,
it does a clean shutdown and power-off as expected ....

Clearly it is NOT desirable to have the operating system able restart of it's own accord.
A manual shutdown is typically done for good reason , and the server should remain shutdown.
The previous version, ie Oracle Linux 6.3 did not exhibit this behavior.

I have just replaced my older IMac with a new one because of a cronic power supply problem. Now I see this one is doing the same thing. Is anyone else having the same issues with their MC508LL/A.
I'm with babowa there ... I would suspect the power souce, not the PSU. Where you live could be an issue depending on how reliable and 'clean' the electricity is to your home. If that is ok then it could be the wiring in your house ... if it were mine, I'd need an electrician to check it out.
Personally, I've had computers hooked to my electric service since 1995 and no UPS (despite recommendations) and never encountered a problem with the computers ... many electrical issues (brown outs, outages, etc), just been fortunate they didn't affect my machines. -
G5 dual 2ghz. Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard. Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue. What's happening?
I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.

Problem: Within days of building computer in January the computer started to automatically reboot seconds after shutdown or entering sleep mode.
Attempted Fixes:
-Total re-install of Windows + BIOS
-Updated BIOS via LiveUpdate
-Rolled back to initial BIOS that came with MB
-Changed between registry option of "PowerdownAfterShutdown" between "0" and "1"
-Disabled Wake-Up Events in BIOS
-Changed to OS controlled Wake-Up events
-Changed "Restore after AC Power Loss" to off in BIOS
-Ordered a new PSU, replaced PSU
Regardless the fix, if I try to shutdown - the computer reboots within a few seconds. If I try to put it in sleep mode, it boots right back up. The only way to get the computer to shut off is by manually turning off the PSU.

Shorted on with flathead, boots up fine. After flipping off the PSU to turn it off and then flipping the PSU back on, the dang thing waits a few seconds and boots right back up. No short required. At this point I think a ghost might be living in my computer. -
Power Mac G4 not turning on after clean shutdown, works otherwise.
My Power Mac G4 does not turn back on after a clean shutdown, but turns on after being disconnected from the power. If I shut it down cleanly (Apple menu -> Shutdown), it shuts down, but then the power button does not work. After unplugging the computer and plugging it back in, the computer is able to power on successfully. I have reset the PRAM and have reseated the PSU connector.
I am using Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11, but the same problem occurs under Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8. I don't think the operating system really matters with this type of issue though, because the power button literally will not respond until I unplug and replug the computer.
Any suggestions?

IMac DV slot-loading power button glows orange after shutdown, cant start
Hi,
I have iMac DV SE (graphite model) of 1999, 320MB RAM, 40 GB HD, running Mac OS X 10.4.7.
Everything seems to work fine, but when I go to Shutdown, it shuts down fine and power light goes off...Then several minutes later, the power button turns orange and stays like that for a few hours and then goes off again.... Then several hours later or the next day, I have a hard time getting it to turn on again by hitting the power button.. the keyboard (old iMac keyboard) power button never works to turn on the iMac (should it?) but when I hit it while in Mac OS X, it shows me the menu to shutdown, restart, sleep, etc...
Also, by PRAM battery seems good (I measured it at 3.6 V) and it seems to keep track of the date and time just fine, so I cant imagine it's the battery....
So in the past when this happens, it just keep hitting the power button and/or remove the power cord and re-insert, etc, and some combination of that after many tries the iMac finally starts up...
Any idea what's going on? I cant find any discussion of the power button going orange after a shutdown and the fact that my keyboard power button doesnt work to turn on the Mac...

Anyways, I found have some interesting stuff since...
1. On this last occasion when it didnt turn on, I was jiggling some stuff (plugging and unplugging the power cord several times.... then I tilted the iMac slightly and let it "drop" to jostle/jiggle it)... and after the slight "drop," I hit the power button and it turned on just fine... d'oh... I wonder if something's just "loose" somehow... I dont have a random shutdown problem, once it's turned on and inside Mac OS X, it works fine for hours and hours until I tell it to shutdown. hehehe...
2. Just last night, before going to bed, I shut it down and since it's plugged into a power surge, I turned the power OFF to the power surge, so now it doesnt have any power to it... so this morning, I turned power to the power surge, and hit the power button on the Mac and it turned on just fine! d'oh again.. hehe... so it almost leads me to believe somehow that leaving the power cord with electricity flowing to the Mac when the Mac is shutdown is "hurting" it somehow, and if there is no power connected when it's shutdown, it works normally (I think)...
Very strange indeed...
Anyways, I got this Mac second hand so I am wondering if this was a problem for the original owner... when I first got it , I knew the hard drive was missing, so I put a 40GB IDE hard drive from a PC and formatted it, etc... so not sure if the hard drive could cause a boot issue...
Oh, well, I guess I'll keep using this iMac until it no longer turns on.. lets see how long I can keep going like this ..heheh..

2008 Mac Pro random power cut+boot issues
Hello everyone,
I'd like to describe a problem I've been having and see if it tweaks any ideas as to what the issue might be.
In 2008, I purchased a Mac Pro 2x2.8. It's got 4gb ram (2x 1gb Hynix and 2x 1gb Kingston), 320gb, 1tb and 160gb sata's and a ATI 4870 graphics card. Up until about 3 months ago, everything has been dandy - it's the best computer I've ever had, however recently I've been having some intermittent problems that may be related, or separate.
Problem 1: In the morning when I turn it on, on some occasions it will power on for 5 or so seconds, then power right back off again. Sometimes this happens after 5, 10 or even 20 seconds (right in the middle of OS X or Windows boot). The only thing I note is that if it can get as far as the boot selector (hold alt at boot) screen, it won't cut out at that point, only sometimes after I wait a moment then select a boot option. This can sometimes happen 10 or 20 times in a row before it will eventually turn on and function normally.
Problem 2: Random power cut off, sometimes at idle, sometimes while browsing, or using any other app. I can't pin it on any one particular function. I know it's not a temperature problem, I have temp monitors on my menu bar and as far as I can see it's been fairly stable in that regard. Most of the time, I can power up the computer again but very occasionally it will revert to what I described in problem 1.
I have run the apple hardware test, with no errors being produced, and have had the local apple reseller/service centre take a look, with their tech reporting no issues. (He referred to something called ARD being run on a cycle of 20 or 30 times with nothing indicating a problem) I've taken off every non essential piece of hardware, tried with only the stock ram - and the newer ram to no avail of my issues. The only thing that I can still suspect myself is a power issue, however there is another PC in the room that has not had any issues what-so-ever.
Is there anything anyone could suggest I try to pinpoint this issue? It's sending me insane.
Thanks in advance for any help!I found your post after dropping my G6 off at the Genius Bar - for precisely the same reasons. I've had this issue for the past 6 months on my (early) 2008 dual quad core. A month ago, the power supply entirely died and Apple replaced it. Now the same issue has returned and the computer restarts multiple times on boot up, at different points, sometimes as long as 15-20 minutes after booting up, when everything seems normal. At this point, two people at Apple have given me two different causes. 1) The person on the support phone said it has to be the power controller on the logic board. 2) The person who took in the Mac said it has to be the APS UPS (model ES 750) because the G6 has a 900 watt power supply and the UPS is only rated at 450 watts (750 volt amps). I had already thought of this as a possible cause and had purchased a power consumption indicator called Kill-A-Watt. Guess what? The G6 consumes at most 120 VA. In any case, the UPS fuse would have blown at overload. I don't feel like springing for a 1750 VA UPS unit just on the off chance that this might be the cause. This is also driving me up the wall. Additional info much appreciated if anybody cares to make educated guesses.

785GTM-E45 Shutdown / Power on problems
Hello MSI forums, I recently purchased a 785gtm-e45 along with a Phenom X2 555 BE and I ran into a strange problem. When I first put the computer together it would not power on. I had to turn the power supply switch off for at least 10 seconds then flip it back on and power on. If I shutdown from windows, or hit power while it's booting up, the same problem occurs, it doesn't want to power back on without flipping the switch off.
I also doubt it's my power supply , seasonic 430watt, because my last system was an intel e2180 oc'd to 2.8ghz, ati 4830, now it's just the 555be no video card.
Also, has anyone been able to overclock with this board? I got my my 555 BE from 3.2 to 3.8ghz and crashed after prime95 for 3 hours, thinking it's my ram.My apologies for the first crappy post, here are the full specs.
CPU : AMD Phenom X2 555 BE @ 3.20 GHz
MB: MSI 785GTM-E45 - Bios Version 8.3
RAM: 2 x 2GB G. Skill F2-64000CL5D-4GPBQ PC2-6400 CL5-5-5-15 1.8V - 1.9V
HDD: Intel X25-V 40GB and Seagate 7200.11 1TB
GPU: Sapphire Radeon 4830 512mb
PSU: SILVERSTONE ZEUS ST65ZF 650W 12V - 55 amps
OS: Windows 7 32 Bit
Also runs 2 x 120mm fans.
I put in the Silverstone power supply and I am still running into the same problems as the Seasonic power supply which has less amps and wattage. If I restart my computer it is fine, but if I hit shutdown then try powering it on, it does not work.
I have to turn the power switch on the PSU off for about 10 seconds before flipping it back on and powering up.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you. -
Z77A-G43 Computer Reboots after Shutdown Issue
I recently built a new PC using the MSI Z77A-G43 motherboard and installed Windows 7. Everything seems to work fine except one thing - the PC immediately restarts itself after It shuts down through the normal Windows shutdown process. I have read many forums on this similar problem and have tried a few things such as 1) unchecking automatic restart in the system properties dialog box. 2) Changing the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon "PowerdownAfterShutdown" to a '1'. 3) Updated Windows fully as well as installed the latest drivers for everything. 4) Made sure that in BIOS all of the Wake Up Events are set to Disabled. In fact I even changed Wake Up Event By [BIOS] to By [OS]. 5) Cleared BIOS by taking the battery out for 5 minutes, as well as updating BIOS to the latest version 2.2. 5) The only IO card is the graphics card and I switched that out too and it did not make a difference. None of these options seems to correct the problem. I am convinced there is something wrong with this motherboard. Has anyone else had this issue with this or another motherboard? Anyone have any other solutions?
Sometimes a short within the chassis can caused such issue as well.
I suggest that you try booting and shutting down the hardware out of the chassis and see if you can replicate the issue. -
Windows 8 Laptop Boot Issue (and other related problems)
My Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5148 laptop was bought about a month ago, but it's been giving me issues for the last week.
The most significant one was a boot issue, where out of nowhere, the PC would not start, and after a hard restart, I received an error message saying Windows was not able to start. So I called tech support and they guided me through a PC refresh. That seemed to have solved the issue until twenty minutes later, when my system froze and I could not move the cursor let alone use any applications. So I did a hard restart again, and tried to do another PC refresh until the laptop 'clicked' and shut off. I restarted again, and my system seemed to be working normally until two days later (I did not shut it off or restarted it during this period, only kept it in hibernate when not in use).
Upon trying to use my laptop, it said Windows was reconfiguring. Afterwards, I received an error message saying that Windows had to restart due to 'this problem,' though the problem was not specified. The error message included a list of file addresses that presumably contained a description of the problem, but I can't access the files because they don't show up when I search their addresses. They are .dmp and .xml files, respectively.
Is anyone familiar with this problem? I wish I could return the laptop but it's a couple of weeks shy of the return period (Staples has a measely 14-day return period, but I didn't think I'd have to use it). I don't want to go through the hassle of shipping it off to Toshiba for repairs. Would reformatting the laptop solve the problem? I wish I could attach the .dmp and .xml files to this post but I can't locate them. I'd try using the recovery disks, but they were recently destroyed in a flood.
Any comments, advice, and/or suggestions are very much welcome!Happy to learn the hardware is fixed.
I was told they could not do so without the product key. ... Any ideas as to how I can get my product key?
Everybody should know by now that there is no product key for preinstalled Windows. The OEM has it locked into the motherboard.
As I've said over and over, recovery media will restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents. Windows will be activated.
Windows is not installed during this process. Everything on the hard drive is restored. It's an important distinction.

Video or Power manager problem - Overall issue lack of video
Hello,
Lastnight I unplugged the power to my T43 laptop. After I unplugged it, my display became extremely dim, to the point where I could see that there was video however it was to dim to read anything. When I plugged it back in,I had to hit Fn-F7 to cycle through displays and have it re-activate or work properly again. I assumed it was some battery power saving option and decided I would address it this morning.... However, now when I unplugged the power this morning it has gotten worse. When I plug the power back in and hit function Fn-F7, I only have normal display for a few seconds. Then it goes back to the dim state. Does anyone know what the problem or fix is? Is it my display, or perhaps the driver or a setting?
Troubleshooting - I connected my laptop to an external monitor and it works fine on there. I cycle through F-F7 and while I still dont get an LCD display, I do have an external monitor display.
I also tried downloading and installing the latest updates and drivers from thinkpads system update. However, after the updates succesfully download, they DO NOTsuccesfully install. Thats a whole other issue in itself. If the fix for my display involves downloading the updates from sys update or software installer, could someone include the fix for this issue as well? If not Ill deal with sys update another time. Thank you in advance!

Right after they looked up the serial number and saw it was no longer covered, they transferred me to a different department where I couldnt understand a word that was said. I asked the basic question of if they knew what was causing the problem, or if they knew of the system update issue. The woman would not answer but instead just kept repeating the same words that I could barely understand, "I can give you link to drivers or you can pay me $175 to send in for repair." All I wanted to know was if they have experienced this issue before and if so was it hardware or anything else such as a setting.
Was a little shocking as I've got my IBM certifications for personal and business pcs along with my laptop cert. Ive also worked with IBM through my company as a partner for many years. I was surprised to see this as Ive always had good experiences with IBM in the past up and until this.

Boot issues after bios update (U430 touch)
Hi all,
I've been having some problems after updating my BIOS on my Ideapad U430 touch. After updating 7CCN34WW to 7CCN35WW, Windows 7 would not boot. It shows the usual 4 colors swirling to the center and then it stalls. Interestingly enough, at the top of the screen, white dotted lines appear (about 1 cm thick). These dotted lines alternate, turning off and on irregularely. I've waiting at least a half an hour, nothing happens.
Now I figured out how to solve this, which is by changing the boot settings in the bios to Legacy instead of UEFI. After changing it back to UEFI everything works again. But every other day or so it still hangs during UEFI and I have to change the bios settings back and forth to get into Windows. Can anyone enlighten me on this issue? It would seem the bios update is faulty? What's going on? Can I downgrade the bios?

Yes it is possible that a UEFI / Secureboot check fails something in the OS UEFI boot after the update.
The system does not support a backflash feature, Reflashing the BIOS might need to be done in Lenovo Service Depot,
If you don't have much data on the unit, I can suggest performing a one key Recovery while on a UEFI mode.
Downside will be Deletion of current files and documents and back up will be required.

Out of focus still photos in time line
