Boot Issue... iMac hangs...

Hi
I've got a iMac G5, 2GHz speed with 1GB memory using Mac OS X 10.4.9 with 150GB hard drive (40GB currently used)...
My iMac currently boots to the Mac OS screen with loading horizontal scroll bar, but once that reaches the end the iMac just sits there...
Used the iMac install disc and tested hard drive with Disk Utilities which found errors on the volume which it could not repair...
Trying not to format drive as i have no backups (yeah i know!!!)...
Where should i go from here trying to retieve data, use something like Techtool Pro which i read on other discussions or boot from another source???
Please assist???
Tanx...

Techtool Pro or DiskWarrior may be able to help; however, your first priority should be to back up as much data as you can.
Something that may help with this is to connect your iMac to another Mac using FireWire target disk mode. If your iMac's drive mounts & is accessible to the other Mac, try to copy as much of your home folder(s) as you can to its drive, offloading that to CD's/DVD's if necessary.

  • Boot issues

When I boot my computer (MacBook Pro, 15", Early 2010, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD, 2.4GHz Intel Core i5), it does nothing for quite awhile, and eventually gives me the folder with the question mark on it, signifying it can't find a startup volume. I think I know why, but this has not helped me fix the problem.
I used Disk Utility to partition the internal hard drive so I could install Linux (Ubuntu 10.10) and dual-boot. I used Linux to reformat the partition and used one of the 134MB spaces between partitions (the one at the end of the drive) as Swap space for Linux. I installed Ubuntu, and it worked fine. I could use the built in boot manager (holing down the option key at startup) to boot into either operating system.
That was last night. This afternoon, I booted up the computer, and it gave me the flashing question mark folder and wouldn't boot. I connected it to my iMac (20", Early 2009, 2GB RAM, 320GB HD, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) via a FireWire 800 cable and started the laptop up in Target Disk Mode. I started my iMac up holding down the option key to get it to look for the (possibly) bootable hard drive of the laptop. It did not find it, but displayed only the boot volumes normally available to it (Mac OS X 10.6.7, Windows 7 Ultimate, Mac OS X 10.5.8). I then shut down the laptop and proceeded to start it back up. Miraculously, it booted of its own accord into Mac OS X (10.6.7). I later booted the machine into Linux and began dinking around with some settings to get the illuminated keyboard to work. I did not entirely succeed, but the laptop was still working fine. I shut the clamshell to put it to sleep (while in Linux), and about an hour later, upon opening the clamshell, all I got was a black screen and the mouse pointer (as if it was stuck trying to get me to enter a password to unlock the screen). On rare occasions, this happens to me under Mac OS X as well, and I have usually been able to resolve it by shutting and opening the clamshell. After waiting a few minutes, I tried this, and when it failed, I decided to force shut down the machine, as I have had to do sometimes when this has happened under Mac OS X. Upon restarting the computer, I got the flashing question mark once again. I tried holding down the option key on startup, but only got a mouse pointer against a blank grey screen (like the boot loader screen, but without any icons). I tried zapping the PRAM, starting up in Safe Mode, starting in Verbose mode, holding down the x key, then Command-Option-O-F (then realized that wouldn't work since Apple doesn't use Open Firmware anymore), and also tried Command-Option-V-R, but that also appeared to do nothing. I just got the question mark folder each time (except for resetting the PRAM: that worked, but then I got the question mark folder).
I repeated the same steps as before (Target Disk Mode, etc) to see if they would miraculously fix the problem a second time (I still don't know how they did the first time), but to no avail. I fully booted my iMac with the laptop connected as a FireWire disk to attempt to use Disk Utility on it. Disk Utility did not recognize the drive. I checked System Profiler. It recognized that there was a Target Disk device attached to my iMac, but it did not list any hard drives under it. I proceeded to boot my laptop from its install DVD, which worked. However, Disk Utility on the pseudo-OS that is on the install DVD failed to recognize the internal hard drive. I checked under the Serial-ATA section of System Profiler. It showed two connections, one for the DVD drive, and I presume the other for the hard drive, but the hard drive one showed nothing connected to it. It simply listed a few specs on the SATA port.
I decided to boot my laptop from my iMac's internal drive. I reversed the roles of the machines, my iMac now being in Target Disk Mode, and the laptop trying to boot from its hard drive. I held down the option key at startup so I could choose what to boot from. I choose Mac OS X 10.6.7, and the machine started to boot. Just before it should have gotten to the brief blue screen before the login screen, it had a kernel panic, and the grey came down the screen and told me to restart the computer. I did, tried again, got the same kernel panic, so I decided to try Windows 7. When I selected Windows from the boot manager, it seemed to try to start up in Mac OS X (10.6.7, because 10.5.8 wasn't connected), but never got past the grey Apple icon. After a while, it started occasionally flashing a circle with a line through it, and sometimes the question mark folder, but always switched back to the Apple icon quickly. After at least 10 minutes, I decided to shut down the computer. I then tried booting Mac OS X 10.6.7 in Safe Mode. After showing the progress bar (it only got about half completed before it vanished, but it took a long time to get halfway) for awhile, it eventually successfully booted to the login screen. I signed in, and opened Disk Utility. Nothing. I checked System Profiler and got the same result I had from the install DVD. I shut down the computer, and tried to boot it normally one last time. Nothing.
Does anyone have a clue what's going on? I can understand why the computer would be having boot issues, with my shaky installation of Linux, and all, but I can't understand why nothing will recognize that the computer's internal hard drive exists.
I do have AppleCare for the laptop, unless I've voided the warranty by installing Linux. Should I send the computer in? (I'm over 250 miles from the nearest Apple Store). Is there anything I could do by opening up the computer (I know that would void the warranty if I haven't already). I do have a backup of most of the data, but the backup excludes some video files because of their size. Luckily, I do still have them on MiniDV tape if I have to reimport them.
I feel like I've tried everything, but I wouldn't be surprised if I've missed something obvious…
Thanks in advance for any ideas, suggestions or answers!

Update 2: That successful boot seems to have been one of about four flukes. For some strange reason, my computer will successfully boot into Mac OS X and Ubuntu, but only on rare occasions. There seems to be no pattern, but every once in a while, the computer will decide to recognize it has a hard drive.
    Any thoughts?

  • HT1148 Installed Mountain Lion - Now my IMAC hangs in a short loop (1 sec) at least once every other day.

Updated my IMAC from Lion to Mountain Lion. Processor 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 Mag 1067 MHz DDR3. Now (usually when I am running two software items) my IMAC hangs up about once a day or so. It seems like a short 1 sec repeat. At that point the only way to stop it is to shut down using the main power button. Is anyone else having this problem? I never had a problem until I upgraded. I'm 99% sure it must be in the operating system. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Has Apple found this glitch in Mountain Lion and will they be coming out with a fix?

I was having a similar issue, my 27" iMac would lose the Internet connection, but not the wifi, later I'd find that the machine had restarted giving me a notice that there'd been a kernel panic. It was happening persistently after upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I used CCleaner to clear caches and now two days later I've had no problems.
I'm relieved that I didn't have to resort to more complex solutions.

  • Mac Pro Boot Issue

    Mac Pro - "Quad", 2 X 2.66Ghz; 5GB RAM; OS X 10.5.6
Mac Pro will not boot. It powers up to the grey Apple logo screen. The progress circle spins for about 3 seconds, then powers itself off.
This past week I came back from two weeks off. The first morning back I noticed my Mac was sluggish at times and freezing for a few seconds here and there. When Time Machine backups would kick in, the whole system would be unresponsive for minutes at a time. After turning off all other equipment in my office, I could detect a tell-tale "click click, spin" type noise coming from one of my two internal drives (one for OS and a second for backups).
I tracked the noise to the boot drive and guessing it was about to go out, I ordered a replacement Samsung Spinpoint 750GB. Good thing, because the next day when I came in to work my machine was having worse problems. IF it would boot, it would hang after a few minutes of use. If it would not boot, it would power up to the grey Apple logo, the progress circle would spin a few seconds, the power itself off.
I waited another day and the new drive arrived. I pulled the old OS drive, installed the new one, then dumped our standardized clone image on the drive (using CCC). After the clone was complete, I booted up on the drive, tested it out for a couple of hours and verified that it was working as expected. Next I copied data over to my drive from my backup drive. Everything looked fine.
Three days later, I come in to find my Mac will no longer boot. Grey Apple logo, spinning, etc.. I power off and boot from my external diagnostic drive (OS X 10.5.5). It will not boot. I remove both internal drives and try another boot from the external diagnostic drive. It boots up fine. Shutdown. Remove the backup drive (drive bay 2) and try to reboot from the diag drive once again. It will not boot. Remove the OS drive (drive bay 1) and it boots to the diagnostic drive fine (note: no internal drives are installed at this point). Shutdown. Install the OS drive into drive bay 2 and it then boots to the diagnostic drive just fine.
So now I have booted to my external diag drive and can see that the OS drive is showing on the Desktop; however a pop-up error stating there is a problem has appeared. I try to verify the OS drive using Disk Utility and it stops about 2 seconds into the process with a "Filesystem verify or repair failed" error. The OS drive will then not mount.
I restart booting back to the external diag drive. The OS drive shows up on the Desktop with the same pop-up error message as before.
I run Tech Tool Pro from the diag drive and it comes back with a File Structure error of "Type List Offset Is Invalid" and "No method for Tech Tool Pro to repair a corrupt file". I have a surface scan and drive hardware test running now, but on a 750GB it will be a WHILE.
So here is my predicament... I can understand my original OS drive having problems. It was at least 3 yrs old and has been run quite hard. But what are the odds that I would replace it with a brand new drive running a verified to be good cloned disk image AND have almost the exact same boot issues on the new drive that I had on the old one?
I have taken my original OS drive and hooked it up to external cases and sata-to-usb adapters to make sure that it was actually dead and it is. It will not spin up properly and makes lots of clicking noises. However, having a similar boot issue with a brand new drive has me worried something may be wrong with the Mac Pro hardware also. The new OS drive ran fine for a few days and only had these problems today.
    Any guesses?

Here is my own "cookie cutter" template to this type of problem.
Insure your UPS is working properly and that you have 1300VA to start with.
Run Apple Hardware Test of course.
CCC has been updated so make sure latest (it auto checks probably already).
Do you have Windows? run diagnostics from there, much better.
I settled on WD drives and use WD Diagnostic and has saved a drive.
Avoid Barracudas, seems even their 1TB is also suffering early failures (the 1.5TB was suffering from firmware problem).
Check for reviews and drive upgrade DB on AccelerateYourMac.
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
I know the F1 got a lot of early praise but they aren't compatible with Apple Pro RAID card and may have other issues.
If you want a fast low-cost drive, WD Cavair 640GB $69.

I have seen more than a couple of similar stories from people going away for 1-2 weeks and coming home to system that won't work properly. Hopefully people shutdown and unplug, or shutdown and have UPS, but it is strange to say the least.
Resetting SMC is a good idea but best done with 2008 model by leaving it unplugged for a full night 8-12 hrs. and not just 5 minutes. contrary to Apple tech article. For yours, there is a small physical button accessed by pulling drive tray #4 (easier to see if it is on its side and you have flashlight!)

  • Apples update didn't work for me: Boot Camp: iMac displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7

Boot Camp: iMac displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7 - Apple Support
I have followed each of the steps listed in the link above with no success.
Prior to adding the extra drivers I was able to start the Windows install process up to reformatting the "Windows" Bootcamp drive. After that the computer would go through some instal processes and eventually restart. After the restart the screen would go black. The black screen lead me to the  Apple Support link above dated March 5 2015. After going through steps listed in the link above, I get an error message stating that the D:\Sources\instal.win. file cannot be located. I am forced to restart the computer at that point and theWindows install process attempts to start again but always ends up at the same point.
Note: I am installing windows 7 Pro from a DVD. I scanned the AutoUnattend.xml file and noticed that it refers to "Windows 7 ULTIMATE" but not "Pro" or any others that I could see. (see below). Could that be part of the issue?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 ULTIMATE" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />

Here is an over-simplified explanation of WIM and CLG files. Assume your DVD Media contains
    W7- Ultimate
    W7- Professional
    W7- Home Premium
    W7- Home Basic
    WIM Files
    File1
    y
    y
    y
    y
    File2
    y
    y
    y
    y
    File3
    y
    File4
    y
    y
    File4
    y
    y
    y
The File .wim will contains a compressed image which contains File [1...5].
The W7-Ultimate .clg will have 5 entries, with all set to 'Y'.
The W7-Professional .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','Y','Y'.
The W7-Home Premium  .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','Y'.
The W7-Home Basic .clg file will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','N'.
This allows a single .wim Image file on the DVD media to be used to install any of the 5 flavors of Windows. When you enter your product key, the Installer knows what specific W7 variant you have the key for and will tell the WIM to extract the specific files the installer needs to be extracted.
    The following line
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 ULTIMATE" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
is telling that a retail product key will be entered, which should go look for this specific .clg file (from the five you already have on disk).  You can test if it will work for you by changing this line to the following
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
If it does not work, the other issue can be related to device discovery. Typically A: and B: device names are reserved for Floppy Drives. C: is your internal HDD.
D: can either point to the Optical drive, or the USB. The normal convention is that the removable media is named from Z: backwards. Y: and Z: are usually used for Network drives, so X: should be your USB. First try with the change to "Professional". If it does not work,

  • IMac hanging caused by Safari (I think)

Have been having problems with my iMac hanging which I think is caused by Safari.
Safari (5.1.7 )will be working OK and then hang with the spinning wheel. Am then unable to quit and finder hangs in turn and I end up doing a restart with the power button.
Have 1 external hard drive attached which is partitioned for Time Machine backup and iTunes library.
In attemt to address problem I have previously erased my iMac and reinstalled all software (from new rather than from Time Machine backup) and then reinstalled user files (but not application library files in case any of these were corrupted.
Problem is common to all users.

Can anybody spot an aoffending item? Any help gratefully received.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • My imac hangs up after upgrading to new os

After upgrading to new OS my imac hangs up where it never has done this before. My apple care has long sinse expired and I am really bummed. It was clearly related to the new OS. Any suggestions for relief?

  • Boot issue after shutdown plus power - no problem after restart or after removing power cord

    Hello,
I have a Pavilion Elite m9275.nl desktop. I experience boot issues after a regular shut down.
    After a regular shut down and pressing the power button within a few seconds/minutes, it keeps hanging in the HP startup / BIOS screen, Windows 8 won't boot, the hard drive light doesn't flash;
    After a restart from Windows (instead of shut down) it boots correctly from the c-drive. No hard-drive problems at all;
After a shut down and removing the power cord for 10-15 minutes, it boots correctly from the c-drive. No hard-drive problems at all.
When the PC does not boot, F10 (to enter BIOS settings) does not work neither, so it seems to be a hardware or BIOS issue.
I already replaced the CMOS battery and already loaded default BIOS settings.
During a succesful boot or after pressing F10 (to enter BIOS settings) the screen shows some disk information right after the BIOS. This is the screen that says something like "press CTRL-I to start configuration utility". During a succesful boot the hard disk light flashes shortly before displaying that screen. During an unsuccesful boot the hard disk doesn't flash.
Before replacing a hardware component, I need to know what to replace...
Could it be the hard disk controller or hard disk is defect?
Where is the hard disk controller stored?
Can I upgrade the firmware of the hard disk controller?
BUT: why does it work when I remove the power cord for 15 minutes or after a restart (instead of a shutdown and than pressing power)?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sjoerd-Jaap Westra

  • Windows 7 Boot Issues (After Installation via Boot Camp)

    Hi All
Today I attempted to install Windows 7 x64 on my mac via boot camp.
The install went fine, and I installed the necessary drivers using my Mac OSX Install DVD.
When I restarted I could select Windows as the disc I wanted to boot into, but after selecting it, I only saw the white blinking cursor at the top left hand side of the screen for a few seconds before the computer restarted and booted into OSX.
I tried it a few more times just to make sure it wasn't a one off.
I then inserted my Windows install disc and attempted to repair startup. There were no issues detected.
I can also successfully boot into Windows 7 through VMWare Fusion in OSX, leading me to believe that there must be some thing wrong on the Mac end of booting (although I'm not familiar with the booting process in Mac, so I'm not really sure).
If anyone has any idea what's wrong, I'd really like a hand!
    Thanks

  • 3rd Gen booting issues - board grinding

I have a barrage of booting issues.  After reconnecting the battery, I get apple logo> file/exclamation logo> then a loud clicking sound which can only be dampened by disconnecting the battery.  At first I though maybe it was the drive, but I still get the sound with the drive detatched.  I can reset fine, but will not go into diagnostics.  Also, no trace of mounting.
It was working fine until I went in to jiggle the display cable as I was getting intermittent display.  Maybe I f'ed up the logic board somehow?
Anyone out there slept with enough ipods to throw me a bone?

So,after using a firewire enabled PC to discover that my cord was okay and that my ports were not working not matter what was plugged in...I did something simple.I unplugged the iMac fr about 10 minutes. So,I guess all I needed was a Mac reset, either way it worked and maybe this will help someone later. Thanks to everyone who at least read the post;)!
Now I have to get back to my Halloween playlist.

  • Boot issues with Win98. Safe Mode Boot only. Not all drives detected...

Hello guys!  This is a great source of information and I've learned a TON browsing this place (on company time, hehe), but I've hit a road block that I can't maneuver around.
    System Config
    Neo K8T Neo Fisr mobo
    Athlon64 3200+ CPU
    1 Gig Kingston RAM
    Ti4200 64 MB video card
520 Watt Antec Power Supply (after getting schooled by Bas's great posts on the importance of PSUs, I found out my lame-o 350 watt (!!!!) PSU, errr, ain't gonna quite cut it.)
    Problem:
Windows98 won't boot all the way to normal mode.  It only boots to safe mode.    Apparently a driver issue?
    Symptoms/Clues:
    - Only detects my Western Digital harddrive (and only after some finegling)
    - Wierdness with my 1.44 3.5" floppy (A:) drive.  At first the BIOS would tell me the A: drive was there, regardless of whether it was plugged in.  Then I plugged in the A: drive and Win98 in safe mode couldn't read from it.  Right now, I don't have my A: drive connected and it's not in my Boot Order sequence (hard drive only for now).
    - BIOS doesn't detect my new CD-ROM (SONY) drive at all.  Note, this is a brand new drive that was NOT on my old system.
    - I disabled the S.ATA controller.  (This was confusing because there's an option to disable some SATA thing under an "Integrated Peripherals" menu.  However, there's another setting to disable s SATA thing under a PCI Controller's menu.  Seemed vague to me,, but then it's been a while since I've done this sort of thing.)
    - I cleared the CMOS earlier because of wierdness were the system would hang on bootup and would ask me about starting a "Flash Recovery" process, upon which it would just sit there ( I left it running overnight once).
    Call for help
Unfortunately I have no boot floppies, so I was hoping this was something I could fix without one, perhaps by changing some BIOS settings.  Maybe it's a RealTek Boot Agent thing?
    Any help is appreciated!
    BamaBoy

Im running win 98se with no real problems, and its doing so well that I still dont even feel like trying anything else..........
I'd say RE-clear your c-mos , using the jumper, and unplugging the power for 5 seconds..... then reset your bios settings.......Also, maybe just reinstall the via 4-in1 chipset drivers...... I remember fiddling with some bios setttings before, like the acpi     by os or by bios etc.... that helped.....but its been awhile......The great thing about 98 is that you CAN tweak so much.......
You can reinstall over itself also, which can help redetect the hardware, yyou should always have the 98 files on the hard drive so you dont need the floppy or cd...... So many things you can try....... Resolve yourself to trying as many as possible , its fun when you get it right........... My prob. is that I never remember what I did to fix stuff heheheheh.......good luck
ps, the "flash recovery" thingy has to do with the realtek ethernet lan thingy....which you should disable in its bios.....I forgot how to get to it, I think F11 or something like that while it shows when you are booting....Then it will still ask when you boot, but wwont hang......

  • IMac hangs on spinning color wheel when coming out of screen saver

Since updating to the latest version 10.5.5 my iMac hangs when coming out of screen saver mode with the spinning color wheel and I have to do a hard reboot.
I did some searching and it looks like this was also a problem back with and earlier version of 10.5
I use the pictures screen saver.
Anyone else have this problem since the last update??

I was so spoiled from not having to do anything with my iMac but enjoy it that it never occurred to me a little maintenance would be required.
Still compared to the Windows PC's I have around that I have to try and maintain once a day I think the Mac is a killer machine....
You should attend to your iMac. Even the best machines need periodic attention.
Like an iceberg, most of Leopard is "under the ocean" or as we say, "under the hood." There is an extremely powerful BSD OS down there and it is really that, not Leopard per se, that need an occasional "tweak."
Actually there are automatic routines that do much of the hidden maintenance but permissions repair is not one of them.
Again, you do not need to run permissions repair every day. Not even every month, but it's best to do it anytime you install new software - before and after installing the software.
Some, but not all of the issues you see here are the result of not maintaining the computer.

  • Warm boot / MUP.sys hang - possible success

    Hi,
This post is for information and to hopefully save a lot of pain from others suffering my problems.  However, this appears to be partly an XP software / drivers issue, so the causes of my problems may not be the same things as for others who are suffering the same symptoms.  However, I'd appreciate feedback from other people who have had similar problems.
I've been suffering regularly from warm (and cold) boot hangs - these occur after POST and RAID setup screens, and I either get a black screen or the Windows logo (part transparent).  When choosing safe or debugging mode, the problem always occurs after MUP.sys.  There is a big thread about MUP.sys hangs at Annoyances.com, which identifies a number of possible causes / solutions, many of which appear (to me) to be unlikely.  These include:
    1) Problems with USB2.0 (conflicts or a lack of power) - Remove USB devices and try to boot again
    2) Problems with Power distribution (either a weak power supply or poor power distribution across the board causing instability in either memory, Processor, or USB)  - Solution may be to up core voltage slightly.
    3) The Windows XP setup used an "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" instead of one of the other options - either change the setting or toggle (enable / disable) the ACPI setting on your mobo (Note, articles I have seen do not recommend changing these settings, but it seems that both Hardware and Software need to match ACPI settings (on or off) for it to boot)
    4) Issues with the BIOS - try setting to defaults / adjusing various settings
    5) Software installation / drivers causing conflicts.  - Appears possible, but is certainly not clear-cut.  [Note: My boot issues often get worse after I install something new]
    6) Miscellaneous others (including cluttered drives, virus infestation, etc)
At one point this evening, I simply left my PC in its "hung" state, and came back to it later.  Eventually (after more than 1/2 hr, I believe) the machine DID boot into Windows, but my SATA RAID array had disappeared from my disk list (I have XP installed on a normal IDE partition, and use a RAID array for programmes & media files).
It has proved of great help to me to ensure I had the "Bootlog" setting enabled.  This writes a file to ntbtlog.txt in the windows directory, and you can sometimes interrogate this to see where the boot was failing.  Of course, other times XP never gets to write to the file, soit can prove useless.  In my case, the log showed the system apparently failing at the "processor" installation, with good boots usually showing "Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\AmdK8.sys" immediately after MUP.sys, while bad boots showing "Did not load driver ACPI Uniprocessor PC" immediately after MUP.sys.
This does not provide infallible evidence that it is *that* driver that is the problem, but it may be an indication.
The issue of missing my SATA RAID disk also made me check those drivers, and I noted that the NVidia 4.24 XP RAID and IDE driver were dated 13/1/04, which was identical to that in my System32/Drivers directory.  However, I then saw that the MSI 5.03 drivers were more recent - the IDE drivers in that distribution are dated 3/6/04.
This confused me as I had already installed the 5.03 drivers (the install programme initially "hung" on the SW drivers, and I had to run in Safe mode under "Windows 2000 compatibility" in order to make it run).  I was therefore a bit annoyed to find that the IDE drivers had not "taken".
I therefore browsed to the directory and chose "install" from right-clicking the XXX.inf files.  However, this also made no difference, and my System folders stubbornly maintained the 13/1/04 drivers despite a reboot and another try to install using the main MSI / NVidia install programme.
In the end, I manually selected each IDE and RAID device from device manager and forced a driver update, pointing the update programme at the MSI driver directory.  This finally caused the driver update (which does appear to have sorted out some of my problems).
However, I still had some boot failures, and took Creative's advice ( http://dmzweb4.europe.creative.com/htmlhelp/general/acpi.htm ) and downgraded my "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" driver to an "Advanced configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC".  In hindsight I am not certain this was the correct move, as it appears to be a one-way process (without doing a re-install of Windows) and is not recommended by microsoft (see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=309283 ).
I also considered the possibility of the processor not getting enough juice (should be unlikely with a 33A 12V power supply) and I upped the core voltage to 1.55.
I have had a boot hang since the voltage was upped, so I'm not convinced of its help.  However, with all 3 "solutions" applied, I have had 4 good boots now. I'm hopeful the problem will at least be helped, if not solved.
Anyone got any additional helpful thoughts?
    Cheers,
    David

I am having this exact issue and I have no idea what to do!
When I restart, (warm boot) I will often hang after POST.
When I cold boot, I never hang after POST.
When I get to the windows loading, I get the windows logo, but faded.  (It changes from black to the Windows logo, and it dies somewhere inbetween.)
About 1 in 5 boots I will work.
I'm using the latest drivers for everything, and this is a fresh install of XP SP2 onto a RAID 0 array.

Two issues: iMac goes into kernel panic and reboots after watching Netflix in HD, and left cooling fan randomly starts. Is this RAM or logic board?

  • Z77 MPower BIG BANG Boot issue

    Hey guys,
I am having a serious boot issue. I left my PC on playing in auto mode for Sim City while I slept one night and was woken up to my computer violently rebooting itself after a few seconds (the backspin on my graphics card on boot makes it loud). I cut the power because using the power button wouldn't work.
I cannot get into my BIOS, nor get any thing to show up on my screen via VGA or HDMI (both through the card and mobo ports). Although I did get a quick flash of BIOS text after I switched the bios from a->b on the board itself, but it quickly went away.
This is what I am getting on boot now:
Debug LED goes from 4F-> 64->92 and gets stuck on d7 with all the CPU phase LEDs on.
    My build:
    i5 3570k
    Corsair 16GB
    GTX 660 Ti
    Windows 7 64-bit
Thanks for any help/tips/advice in advance.

B4? That's usually a USB problem of some kind.
What IDE mode was the OS loaded under? Z77 default is AHCI, so is that the mode it was installed? Keyboard and mouse basic standard USB devices? Since you can get into the UEFI/BIOS now, double check the IDE controller mode is set correctly and the boot order is set to nothing but the OS drive.
What is the OS installed on, HDD or SSD?
My operating system is installed on the HDD, my only drive installed. I cannot get any further into my BIOS. I run the set-up and it hangs on "entering setup...".  I hit F2 to continue and it reboots a few times very briefly (2 times) and then it gets stuck on A2 in the right hand corner. If I do not clear CMOS after doing the previous and booting the computer again, it reboots 4 times and gets stuck on b4.
I have a microsoft sidewinder x4 keyboard installed in a 2.0 port on the back and no mouse as it's bluetooth (and my only one).

I have problems with my imac (late 2012). The iMac hangs several times a day. The messages (console) are different.
    For example:
03.09.13 13:06:24,465 spindump[1969]: firefox [1056] didn't gather any samples due to audio running
    03.09.13 13:11:15,087 Safari[400]: CGContextClipToRect: invalid context 0x0
03.09.13 13:11:15,173 fseventsd[61]: SLOWDOWN: client 0x7ffe5c827000 (pid 1254) sleeping due to too many errors (num usleeps 15)
    03.09.13 13:11:16,280 Safari[400]: CGContextClipToRect: invalid context 0x0
    03.09.13 13:11:18,079 Safari[400]: CGContextClipToRect: invalid context 0x0

    Does anyone know a reason?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|Previo' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
