Boot Keys (Options)

Is there a document anywhere that lists all the boot keys and the options they invoke along with some explanation of the usage of each? E.g.. "boot t" invokes Firewire target mode and "boot c" invokes the stand alone Disk Utility (which is pretty self explanatory.)
Thanks

Hey there,

  • Keyboard boot keys (option) do not respond..

    Hi all,
    I have white intel 2 iMac's.
Both of them do not respond to the OPTION key while booting.
Nor the they respond to C, D, X, etc. etc.
I tried both types of keyboards. The white one that came with the iMacs & the new aluminum ones.
I went to the an apple store where they hooked my iMac to a white keyboard, and it worked immediately. The same keyabord I tried @ home!!!
    Ok, I thought.
Must have been some stupid thing I did wrong, but upon testing it at home again, no success.
So, has anybody else had this happening to them?
Is it fixable? It seems like the keyboard firmware is out of date or something like that.
Software update indicates that everything is up to date.
    Ideas anyone?

    Hi -P5ycHO-
There might be a compatibility issue with the new Aluminum Keyboards depending on which iMac you have.
However, it is strange that the Keyboard at the Apple Store worked and not the original one that came with the iMac. Perhaps you are not applying and holding the Option key and the proper time or the Option key is busted?
    Suggestions:
    1. Try holding the Option and other Startup keys right after the startup chime.
    2. Take the Keyboard to the Apple Store and test it to see if works on there iMacs.
    3. Update your Discussions Profile and iMac to 10.5.8 the current version of Leopard.

  • I would like to change "Windows" to "Windows HD" on boot screen (option key). How can I do that?

I would like to change "Windows" to "Windows HD" on boot screen (option key). How can I do that?
I would like to have the following names on boot screen:
    OS X Lion HD
    Windows HD
    Recovery HD
    Thanks in Advance

    Hello Fortuny,
thanks for helping, although your suggestion does not work.
Renaming c: partition (bootcamp c:) to (Windows HD), does not change the name "WIndows" on boot option.
Your suggestion only applies if changing OS X Lion name on boot option using finder, which I already did in first place. My problem applies only in changing the word "Windows"on boot screen (option key).

  • Windows 7 boot key not showing up in boot menu.

I have installed the Windows 7 ISO to a flash drive to use on boot up, using the instructions here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5488789?tstart=0
I have a Late 2009 iMac and the optical drive is broken; that's why I had to use those instructions and intend to use a boot key.  However, when I boot up with the option key, the only options presented are Macintosh HD and Recovery HD.  No Windows boot or EFI boot to be found.  Does anyone know why this might be?  I have gone through the partitioning process in Boot Camp Assistant.  I really don't know why it's not showing up.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.
    Screenshot provided for reference.

    Christopher,
I can't think offhand of why it would not come back like this (but if you have configured ZPM to use content-repo to store its bundles I would recommend getting http://download.novell.com/Download?...d=f0VuQBxq8DI~ as that fixes problems where a patch isn't cached, even though it thinks it is). Does the patch status tab show any errors? Otherwise we're basically going to need to look at logs...

  • Boot key commands with non-Apple keyboard

I seem to be unable to perform any "Startup key" sequences (resetting PRAM, boot into recovery mode, boot from CD etcetera).
I'm using a Logitech USB (model Y-BF37) keyboard directly connected to the computer but no startup key commands works. (The keyboard is designed for use with apple and has apples command-key symbols on the key nearest the spacebar).
I have tried searching but the general opinion seem to be that any USB keyboard should work.
I have this otherwise well working keyboard and I didn't want to spend money on an Apple keyboard.
Do I have to buy an Apple keyboard to use boot key commands??? I don't think I can borrow an apple keyboard from anywhere and I need to be able to boot into recovery mode...

It is indeed strange that it doesn't work, unless...
Firmware password protection in Mac OS X ...

It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option boot will show a lock, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.

  • Boot Keys Not Working

    Hi,
I accidently installed Jaguar on a G5 Powermac that had Panther on it. Since then, I have reinstalled Panther on it. The boot keys do not work at all now. C, Option, Cmdoption+pr, cmdoption+of, nothing works. Probably a firmware issue right? Is there any way to fix when the boot keys stop working?
The computer boots up fine and works, just cannot use any boot keys.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris!
"I accidently installed Jaguar on a G5 Powermac that had Panther on it. Since then, I have reinstalled Panther on it."
Did you perform an Erase & Install, when you reinstalled Panther 10.3.x?
If not, I suggest that you do, and be sure to use the original system install discs, for the G5. Which I believe are not Jaguar 10.2.x.

  • Problem with meta key option in Terminal app!

I used Terminal for awhile now with and without meta-key option but I like the meta-key to be turned on cause im familair with tabbing that way. But one thing I can't do in like irssi, is to make symbols with altkey1234567890.. I can do that without the meya-key option.. Anyone know how to solve this problem?

This seems a [long-standing|http://www.entropy.ch/blog/MacOSX/2009/01/27/Mac-OS-X-Problem-Unsolved-for-Years-Terminal-Meta-Key-and-Internati onal-Keyboards.html|Mac OS X Problem Unsolved for Years: Terminal Meta Key and International Keyboards] issue.
A possible solution could be to find how to specify an arbitrary alternate key as the META key, for example the Caps Lock or Fn key.
Another solution could be to tweak the shell to print the requested characters, even with the "use Option as the META key" option enabled. For what I understand, this route for the Bash shell is explained [here|http://anders.janmyr.com/2009/01/making-mac-os-x-terminal-hum.html|Making the Mac OS X Terminal Hum]. However, I don't know enough of *nix and shells to really understand what's written in that article… moreover, I use the tcsh shell and those instructions seems to me very shell-specific.
Any idea of what needs to be tweaked in a tcsh shell environment?

  • Preserving boot camp option after re-installing Mac OS X

I have a 1st gen Mac Pro with Vista installed on a second hard drive under boot camp. Recently for reasons that I can't find a solution to, my machine has become rather unstable with numerous crashes and lockups that never used to happen.
I want to do a clean reinstall of Mac OS, but I'm concerned that this will replace the boot sector on the main disk and might remove the option to boot into Vista, meaning the Microsoft OS will still be installed but I'll have no way of accessing it.
Has anyone reinstalled Mac OS and managed to keep the boot camp option? Does it get wiped out? If so, what I can I do to get it back. I don't really want to install Vista again as well.

If you are worred: pull 2nd drive out, backup both Vista and OS X.
If you are haviing trouble, run Disk Warrior regularly, and make some backup clones with SuperDuper.
As for OS X, Apple has some troubleshooting OS X articles, and lots of help in the OS X Leopard forums.
And no, this isn't the same as XP and dealing with boot.ini but you might at worst have to boot from Vista DVD once at worst.

  • T420S does not initialize NIC driver via DOS Boot key

    Hello,
I am trying to boot a T420S laptop via DOS.  When the "net initialize" command is executed  the driver never gets initialized.  This is the first time I've encountered this problem.  I have used my DOS boot key on previous lenovo models (T410, T400, T61, X300, T60, T43, T42).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    FO

I am having the same problem, brand new shipment of T420s models, BIOS 1.24 (not even available on the drivers website), and none of my Netboot/Ghost boot tools work. I can get it to netboot to a TFTP server but it wont load my Ghost image (freezes as "transferring image file"), nor do my USB or CD Ghost boot tools work. I randomly got it to load off a Ghost CD once correctly, but after that, it loads and fails to intiailize the UNDI driver (as if PXE was turned off, which it isnt).
This is pretty frustrating since there are no newer BIOS revisions yet, and I cant image them for deployment...
