Boot options with Bluetooth keyboard

I have an Intel iMac that came with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. There are a variety of options that can be used when you boot the Mac, such as hold down the C key to boot from a CD/DVD, hold down the option key to choose the boot drive, etc. When you have a BT keyboard, it doesn't connect until it is booted. How do you get the iMac to recognize, say, the Option key?

Here's the apple article on the subject:

  • Start up options with bluetooth keyboard?  keeping keyboard clean

As you know, sometimes you need to hold down the "option" key or the "shift" key when the machine starts up or even the pram reset key combo. Does this work with the bluetooth keyboard? or is a wired one essential for this? Thanks
Also how do you keep the keys clean? my keys on the wired aluminum keyboard are dirtier than my apple pro keyboard keys ever got....any secrets to keeping them clean?

Let me answer my own question re CLEANING.....just tried oxiclean/water mix...works perfectly......i initially cleaned them with the iKlear wipes and thought they looked clean. Then I made a mixture of warm water and oxiclean....used a q-tip and it's just like new (this is the wired version). tried it on all my apple white keyboards and it's done a good job. it's amazing how much more dirt came off even after a "cleaning" with iKlear.

  • Mac Mini HD errors with bluetooth keyboard

I have a Mac Mini with bluetooth keyboard.  I cannot boot to OSX Recovery (command R).  Yet I need Disk Utility to repair HD errors.

I found this link searching Apple Mac Mini Support: Apple Wireless Keyboards: Using startup keys.  Tried this and it worked on the second try.  Worked using Restart in the middle of the startup chime sound, not Shutdown.

  • Can Startup Manager be Chosen with Bluetooth Keyboard on Cold Boot?

The subject line pretty well sums it up. Can the user hold down the option key while booting a shutdown Mac and get the Startup Manager screen to come up when using Apple's wireless keyboard on a current model iMac? Does the wireless keyboard make "contact" with the iMac soon enough in the boot process to allow this choice to be made?
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

    Hey Steve,
I am using the "old" white wireless keyboard with my macbook pro and os x sl and I can access the boot options (alt, c, t...) right after a cold start (for bootcamp, i.e.). Your imac should have build-in bluetooth, so I guess it should work. I only heard of problems when using third party products or the old bluetooth adapter from apple.
The only thing that bugs me is after start up when the login sceen comes up, the connection seems to be lost... so I have to wait like 30 seconds for my keyborad to react (again?). I haven't found a solution for this so far.
    Good luck,
    Fabian

  • HT3131 Booting in Clamshell Mode with Bluetooth keyboard

I have a macbook pro with retina display which I am using with two apple 27" monitors. I use a logitech K811 bluetooth keyboard while the macbook is closed. I would like to be able to boot from the keyboard directly. Does anyone know how to do this? I believe I saw instructions somewhere but cannot find them.

    Hey there paulh20016,
It sounds like you are needing to set your Mac to let bluetooth devices wake it from sleep. You can do this in your System Preferences:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth.
    Click Advanced.
Select the “Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer” checkbox.

  • Mac mini safe boot with bluetooth keyboard

I have a mac mini running mac os 10.6
Cannot boot my mac mini. When I start from CD and run disk utility i am getting following error msg: "invalid b-tree node size"
Seems to be a fs problem and not hw. Safe boot might solve the problem :  )
Now i am trying to do a safe boot but no success so far. I am having a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Holding down shift key and power on is not working but holding down cmd&s for single mode or holding
down c for booting from cd is working.
    Any ideas?

That message indicates that one or more of the directories on the drive has become damaged. Disk Utility can usually diagnose such problems, but not repair them.
Suggest you get a copy of Alsoft's DiskWarriot. DiskWarrior can usually fix such problems with no loss of data. There's no need to install DiksWarrior - boot the machine to the CD and run DiskWarrior from that.

  • Boot Camp, Aluminium Bluetooth Keyboard & Mighty Mouse not seen by Windows

I recently installed bootcamp (win xp pro sp2), and am unable to get windows to recognise my bluetooth keyboard and mouse. they work fine in OSX, and i know that the bluetooth drivers are good in windows because i can connect to my phone. I think the problem may be with pairing them with multiple computers, because while trying to figure out why it wasnt working i attempted to pair the keyboard with my ibook g4, and was unable untill i removed it from my MBP through system prefs. I have searched high and low and havent been able to find a solution, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

What I have had to do, after booting into Windows, is toggle the mouse and keyboard power off and on. After about 3 or 4 seconds, Windows finally "sees" the input devices and everything works fine. It is a pain, I know.

  • Stuck In Boot Camp With Broken Keyboard PLEASE HELP

    Hi there,
Just recently, I decided I wanted to install Windows 7 on my iMac for gaming. Now, this has worked before, so I expected it to go without a hitch.
Now I sit here (on my Dad's PC), waiting for an answer. I am stuck on the black screen saying "No bootable device - press any key". I see a lot of other posts saying that I need to press option on my keyboard, but that's another problem. I have a Windows gaming keyboard, so the keys have a Windows layout. So instead, I pressed alt, which apparently is the equivalent. Nothing. I tried all the other key shortcuts, and still nothing. I noticed that when I booted up, my keyboard lit up (it's LED), but if I pressed CAPS lock or the num key, the indicators wouldn't light up.
All I want to do is boot into OS X! This is extremely frustrating, as I have some very important work on my iMac.
    Someone please help me.
P.S I have tried with other keyboards, and that hasn't fixed it.

Just generally starting up my Mac, and changing back to OS X when I used to have Windows working on my iMac. By pressing alt on my Windows layout keyboard.

  • Recovery Disk Assistant with Bluetooth Keyboard?

The recovery drive "creates a hidden, 650MB partition called Recovery HD. You can boot your Mac from Recovery HD by holding down Command-R at startup"
How do you perform the keyboard command when you're using a bluetooth keyboard?

You plug in a USB keyboard.  Any keyboard will do... USB HID is a standard.  If you use a Windows-logoed keyboard rather than a Mac one, the Windows log key is the Option key.

  • Startup key combinations with bluetooth keyboard?

In Lion, accessing the recovery partition entails holding down the command-R key combination at startup. Selecting a startup disk and starting up in Safe Boot mode also require holding key combinations at startup.
But under Lion and a bluetooth keyboard, none of these key combinations work. A wired keyboard works fine, but I no longer have one.
A friend who downloaded and installed Lion today just called and asked how he can do this with HIS bluetooth keyboard, so this seems to be a general concern.
    Any tips? Thanks!

Some PC keyboards may map it to the Windows key, but on most it should be ALT.

  • How do you start the hardware test on an imac with bluetooth keyboard

How do you start the apple hardware test on an imac with a bluetooth keyboard as the instructions is to press the D key whilst restarting? And of course the imac cant see the keyboard whilst booting up as the bluetooth connection has yet to be established

Have you tried following the directions for running it from the DVD? The instructions are on the Hardware Test link.If you are correct and it cannot due to the wireless keyboard not making a connection you will need to borrow a wired USB keyboard.

  • KeyRemap4MacBook with Bluetooth Keyboard?

I'd like to remap some keys on both my MBP 13 10.6.4 laptop keyboard and my Apple Bluetooth keyboard to function as a number pad. I've downloaded KeyRemap4MacBook, and haven't installed it yet.
    I read on http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/list.html --
    # Don't remap external keyboards
    # Don't remap Apple's keyboards
So...is it possible to use KeyRemap4MacBook with the Apple Bluetooth keyboard without causing any problems?
I've asked this question on the pqrs.org site but haven't received a response yet, and there's nothing on this subject over on the Bluetooth forum. Thanks for any help with this you can offer.

I think you need to read a bit more deeply into the documentation for KeyRemap4MacBook. At the top of the page you've linked, I find the following apparent admonitions, two of which you've already quoted:
    •Don't remap an internal keyboard
    •Don't remap external keyboards
    •Don't remap Apple's keyboards
•Don't remap keyboards which has third vendor's driver (Logitech, Microsoft, Kensington, ...)
Thinking about these instructions for a moment, one quickly realizes that if these were instructions to the user, they would preclude the use of KR4M on any keyboard at all. That can't be what the software's developer intends.
And it isn't. The page you've linked +is not a page of instructions to the user.+ It's a page listing 1036 different instructions that the user, at his or her option, can program into KR4M to govern its behavior. I've never used KR4M, but it is the most widely and often recommended keyboard remapping utility for use on Apple notebooks, and that certainly wouldn't be true if it didn't work on them, were dangerous to them, or caused the user to turn into a pumpkin or a pillar of salt. So go ahead and try it out, and if it works for you, use it in good health.

  • 6500 with bluetooth keyboard?

Is it possible to use a bluetooth keyboard with the 6500 classic?. if not then, I'll probably have to get an S60 phone like the 6120 - although I'm not even sure if that works with a bluetooth keyboard.
I use gmail (java app) on my current phone but would love to be able to type something a little bit longer without relying on a numeric keypad and a T9 dictionary.

Yeah, But the 6120 has the option to communicate with the Wireless keyboard via Bluetooth

  • Can you create a keyboard short cut for the dictation mic with bluetooth keyboards? The multi-button requirement to open the onscreen is annoying and unintuitive.

(Using an "iPad 3", i dont care what apple calls it) There should be a built in one button access to this from EVERY keyboard since this function is used to replace typing. An inherent Apple shortcut like copy and paste. I set my iPad up on a framed photo holder and use it like a moniter screen when I write, my Bluetooth keyboard is separated from it and makes writing comments and long articles less efficient because it requires extra steps with every dictation, while taking up screen space to have the on screen open. There needs to be a way to access dictation without the onscreen keyboard open, via any standard keyboard.

I was "reasonably frustrated" for having more than one answer offered for a question that not only didn't I ask, but made it clear I was aware of the information it appears they cut and paste at me.
I see it as: the title of my post should inform any person with an elementery handeling of the english language that I not only have this type of keyboard but am well aware it has a button for the ONSCREEN keyboard. That makes it look like they were just "approval hunting" #1. 2nd Grampa Joe's generic sounding response as a zero level newbie already who found "this" post where the first line is about keyboard shortcuts......WHEN there are better posts with more views and commets for exactly that. Approval hunting #2. I'd say based on both, my suspicion is darn reasonably justified sir.
"couldn't find the answer he wanted" no sir, I didn't get an answer at all, they answered OTHER questions. Questions I didn't ask, even after having explained myself more clearly. If anyone is a Jerk, it's you for jumping to eronous conclusions and attacking me for them on personal level. I made a justified claim based on the BLACK AND WHITE TEXT, that it still appears to me is well supported, you just flung mud.........who's the jerk?
Finally, your first post answered my question directly. Thank you. However under General/Keyboard, at the bottom you can make keyboard shortcuts. They may not function how I'm asking, but you can make them.

  • Can I use USB mouse with bluetooth keyboard?

I am in need of some help. I recently got my iMac about 3 months ago and absolutely hate the magic mouse and want to use my rocketfish usb mouse along with the bluetooth mac keyboard. Is this possible or just wishful thinking on my end? I have searched everywhere for drivers and answers with programs etcetera and have came out empty. Help?

I've done so (and even tested it on my Macbook and the USB mouse works fine) but for some reason it will not interface with my iMac - and I've tired multiple USB ports and still nothing, which is why I brought up the keyboard being bluetooth I didn't know if that somehow may interfer with the USB mouse when the bluetooth keyboard is turned on and paired. I am pretty good when it comes to computers so I know what to look for and what I am doing (for the most part) but this has me stumped.
