Boot OS X Volume appears on TimeMachine after ML install

Hi everybody,
I just upgraded to Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 from Lion 10.7.5 (MBP 15" mid 2010). So far, everything went really well.
Today I ejected my TimeMachine Volume (External WD Elements 1.5 TB, 3,5", FileVault 2 encrypted under Lion 10.7.4), when ML asked me, sorry for the translation from german: "TBias I is one of 2 partitions on this hard drive. Do you want to eject TBias I or both?"
Now the strange thing is, that this was for sure not there in Lion. I checked for all hidden partitions (defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1), and there are 4 listed with the details underneath:
1) The disc "TBias" Iitself, the only one visible normally (/Volumes/TBias I, encrypted, 1.5 capacity, capacity for whats occupied and free)
2) disk2s1 (not activated, EFI, 209.7 MB)
3) TBias I (not activated, pysical core storage volume, capacity 1.5 TB) --> is this normal? I have a second WD 1.5 TB where only disk1s1 appears?
4) Boot OS X (Volumes/Boot OS X, capacity 134,2 MB) --> even though it says its Mounted, it doesn't show on desktop or anywhere.
TimeMachine is working just fine, but I would like to get rid of this message that appears everytime I try to eject the volume. Unfortunately, I don't know if I can erase "Boot OS X" safely or not. I also didn't find anything about this newly appearing partition on an external TimeMachine Volume.
So my questions:
- Why did this appear?
- Can I safely erase this partition to get rid of this message?
- is the second TBias I, hidden partition normal? On my other WD 1.5 TB it does not appear
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.
Best,
Tobias

I see this too. When I open Disk Utility (DU), I can see all the partitions even the hidden ones. I read the defaults for DU and I had turned on:
DUDebugMenuEnabled = 1
DUShowEveryPartition = 1
Turning those back off prevents ML from asking about ejecting all partitions.

  • Boot Camp: Mac Pro won't start after Windows install

After installing Boot Camp on a Mac Pro dual 2.66 (firmware updated), XP installer went through installation & copying files, then restarted. Went to a black screen with white Windows-style text that said something along the lines of "XP cannot start from this CD, press any key to restart." Totally unresponsive, held down power to restart. Will no longer power up. Have reset the SMC without any effect. Makes a brief sound when trying to start, but does not actually start up.
Is there any known power issue that I might be able to solve myself, or is the supply likely blown?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I put Vista on its own dedicated drive, 64GB Vista, the rest as FAT32 to make it easier to share files. I had to remove the OS X drives in order to allow Windows/Vista to install. Once installed, had a black screen and some blue crash screen, until I ran the BootCamp driver updates.
I would try unplugging your drive(s) first and see if you boot from Tiger Installer DVD - or better, boot Apple Hardware Test (hold down "d" on startup from Install Disk #1).

  • Time machine no longer a "timemachine" after re-installing Leopard

Time machine worked fine on the first install but I had some network issues like not being able to connect to my iMac G5 from a Windows PC. Mac support suggested reinstalling Leopard after all other suggestions failed. Now, when Time Machine application is enabled it no longer lists a time table. Only "Today" and "Now" is shown and no times. The restore function does not work either. Disk repair utility has not been able to correct the problem and there are no Time Machine .plist files in Library preferences either. How do I correct or fix Time Machine?

I am having similar issues with TM. After spending close to 3 hours on the phone yesterday with apple tech support and a product specialist, I was able to temporarily resolve the issue (disappearance of my external hard drive icon on the desk top and in finder). I asked the specialist if I should just disable TM and not use it until Apple provides a fix to all of the problems, but all he could say was, I can't advise you on that. I have turned TM off, but did not deleted the TM files from my external HD and the problem started again this morning. I need to go into Monitor to fix this, but forgot the codes they gave me to fix this problem, so i have to call in again!

  • Macbook Pro 2011 boots to Recovery disc or bootcamp only after successfully installing bootcamp on Mt Lion 10.8, the 3 harddiscs are there, but selectin Mac HD will boot to recovery disc

On my Macbook Pro 13.3" mid 2011 model, with Lion and bootcamp, upgrading to Mountain lion 10.8 hung for the whole night. It failed to boot up, I was panic, reinstall the OS in the hope it will repair the boot disc, but it locked up the macintosh HD.
I rebuilt OS without bootcamp from backed up image (Lion) then upgraded to Mountain lion, no problem at all. Used it for a couple of days, then installed bootcamp and restored the Windows 7 image from the backup. It's completed without any problem. It can boot up in Windows 7 and I changed startup disc in control panel to Mac HD, it can only boot from the recovery disc. Holding down the option key will show the 3 hard discs: Macintosh HD, Windows and Recovery 10.8, but selecting Mac HD always boots up by recovery disc. I have use disk utility from recovery disc to verify and repair Macintosh HD to no avail.
If I use only mountain lion, it will be OK.
Has anyone experience the same problem? Thank you.

I suppose it is serious bug in Mac OS Lion managing FileVault and wonder what the help could be?

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck

When booting and holding down the option key, my primary volume appears twice. I'm sure it's not supposed to and looking for help on removing one instance of it.

After removing the external drive, diskutil list produces the following result:

       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.1 GB   disk0

4:       Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP               113.2 GB   disk0s4
I have attached a screenshot of the volumes that appear when I hold down option during start. The first two volumes are both named, "Momentus XT".

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Boot DVD does not appear in list on Option Restart

Greetings - I am attempting to run Stellar Partition Manager to adjust two partitions on my SSD drive.  I have setup a dual boot configuration where 10.6.8 as well as 10.7.2 reside on that SSD drive in two separate partitions.  To adjust the partitions I must restart the workstation from a Boot DVD created using that software, however after restarting while holding down the Option Key, the DVD disc does not appear as one of the choices in the bootable drives list.  I believe the DVD drive is functioning properly as I routinely use it to read and write discs, including loading software.  I have reset the PRAM, but that has had no affect.  So far I have not received knowledgable support from Stellar, and have kind of gotten the run-around.  I am hoping I can independently work around this issue.  Thanks for any thoughts.   Scott

  • Unable to boot arch after re-installing nvidia

My system is x64. I have Ubuntu installed along with Arch on a different partition. After having installed arch with some (probably redundant) nvidia packages, I decided to remove them by installing packam -S nvidia nvidia-uitls.
I had to remove mesa-(something or just mesa, I don't remember) and xf86-video-nouveau. So I installed nvidia nvidia-uitls successfully. Plus after that I installed xfce-settings because as I found out it should have resolved the issue of gnome-terminal. and I added this to xorg.conf:
    Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
    EndSection
The bottom line is, I can't boot to arch anymore. Only standard label on the black screen shows up (kvm: disabled by bios) and nothing else happens, meaning it kind of "boots" but it doesn't boot further than showing that label. What can I do?

  • Error while booting after fresh install

Hi, I decided to reinstall Arch on my laptop. So I first used gcdisk to make my partitions, I have 4 (/ , boot, home, var). I made sure to make a fifth partition of 2mb for bios booting with grub at the beginning of my disk. I chose jfs filesystem for all partitions except var I chose reiserfs.
I mounted everything, installed base and base-devel, grub following the wiki, generated fstab, etc. Then when I reboot I get the error : error 'grub.pc/i386/search_fs_uuid.mod' not found. I tried reinstalling everything twice.
I thought maybe I was doing something wrong with GPT so I used MBR this time, re-did the full installation and same problem. I read the grub wiki and did everything it says. I'm not doing dual-boot.
    any suggestions? thank you
PS: After booting it brings me to maintenance terminal.

    henk wrote:

Is this a typo? As in it should have been '/grub/i386-pc/search_fs_uuid.mod'?
Ooops it might have been a typo sorry.
WonderWoofy wrote:I think the significant portion of what you did has to do with the error message itself.  Ergo, instead of reinstalling everything over and over again, debug grub.  I think you need to do better than "I read the grub wiki and did everything it says" in how you ask your quesiton.  What exactly did you do?
BTW, i really do not like grub2 as it has become particurly crazy bloated (as exemplified by the need for a 1-2MB partition in addition to the space in the disk's boot sector).  So I try to encourage others to use something simpler that allows more user control over configuration.  I like syslinux, but grub-legacy or lilo are good choices as well.
I had grub2 installed before so that's why I chose it. Also on the syslinux wiki it doesn't say it supports jfs filesystem, which is why I chose grub2.
Is there a way to install the missing path with pacman?
edit: Also when I check in /boot/grub/i386-pc/ I can see the search_fs_uuid.mod
