Boot Panic: trap type d, error 0 at 8fa7

Hi
I am trying to install Solaris 10 on x86 machine:
Mother Boad : K7S41GX
Socket :A(462 pins)
Bios Version :3.3a AMI Bios dated 7/19/2004
Processor :AMD Sempron 2200+ (1.5 Ghz)
Monitor :Samsung Sync Master 753DF
Hard Disk :1 WDC WD1200 JB-00GVA0 (Westren Digital)
2 Maxtor 6L040J2
CD : EIDE CD-ROM 52X/AKH
DVD :Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-812S
chipset :SIS 7S41
I have checked the MD5 sums of all the five files and found them in order.
After making a single large file I again cheked the DVD iso file and found
the sum to match with the one on solaris server.
After burning the Solaris 10 DVD again at 2x speed . Now I have been
able to boot from CD. But I can get to only the following prompt and after
that the installation stops:
<<<staring interactive text installation, console session>>>
booting kernel/unix....
Boot:Panic: trap type d , error 0 at 8fa7
I might mention here that I did go through the various solaris 10 installatin
manuals and sun.doc but have not found anything like this or similar.
any vetren would care to give tip
cheers
and thanks for reading.

  • Boot panic

    My configuration is:
    Athlon XP2100+
    512 DDRAM
    2 9.1GB SCSI HDs
    Adaptec 29160N
    3C905CTX NIC
    Solaris 8 10/01
At Webstart installation, I let it default to interactive. Then I get:
boot panic: trap type e, error at <different addresses>
I'm booting from the CD-ROM with a downloaded copy. Occasionally I
    have seen messages like:
    bogus sector number
    short read. 0x2000 char read
    just before the panic
I thought about replacing the CD-ROM, but then and just for the sake
of confirming, I installed W2K using the same configuration without
    any problems.
Any hint on what it may be causing this situation?
    Thanks beforehand for your comments.

The same problem is described here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82065 However, I don't know whether something was fixed in the package, or in the kernel. Either way, you might be able to work around this problem by installing an old kernel from /var/cache/pacman/pkg.
You need to chroot from a live-cd into your existing system to install that
Yeah, I've seen that thread. I have already looked up on how to downgrade my kernel (wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … g_Packages), but that page only talks about downgrading packages... Your message was quiete clear. Many thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it out and report the results.
Okay, I've installed the LTS kernel now (2.6.32.31-1) and so far, so good.

What's wrong and how can i determine where i have errors?

    Hi segmantal and Benedict_White.
I have been finally able to diagnose and repair the problem: the right driver is there (sata_nv), but there is a bug/deficiency in the sata_nv driver with kernels 2.6.8+ for NForce3 250 chipsets (e.g., in my Shuttle SN95G5). This has been reported as a bug in some other distributions (e.g., Red Hat) and at the OSDL bug web site. There is a proposed code repair/kernel compilation fix (which I have tried successfully).
This sata_nv driver worked properly with earlier kernels (and I as able to boot with DevFS and udev and all relevant modules with kernel 2.6.7). But things went to pieces when I upgraded to 2.6.8 or 2.6.9. The Red Hat and OSDL bug reports coincide precisely with what I'd been experiencing.
I have submitted this bug with background material to the Arch bug site and you can find the gory details there if you're so inclined.
    Regards,
    Win

  • FileVault 2 seems to be causing kernel boot panics

    Hello,
I'm on a 10.8.2 Mountain Lion OS X (13-inch, Mid 2010), no new updates are available. I turned on FileVault 2 a few months ago and since then I've had a lot of kernel panics while booting. Sometimes it just booted ok and sometimes it panicked. Sometimes even twice in a row. Sometimes it created a crash report, sometimes it did not.
This is actually a clean-ish install, it's not an upgrade from Lion. I don't use Parallels Desktop or VMware as other threads sometimes mention. I don't use any NTFS driver. Although I do have Flash Player, GPGPreferences, Growl and Java plugins installed (I don't know if they have anything to do with those drivers).
Before I turned the Vault on, no boot panics.
After I turned it on, sometimes panic, sometimes not, couldn't find any system in it. About 50 % chance of a crash.
After I turned it back off, no panics so far.
So I turned it off today and tried restarting about twenty times (shut downs, restarts) and no kernel panic so far. I also installed Memtest and had it run in single user mode once and everything was ok.
I have three very similar general protection fault reports, I'm going to post the latest one here but if anyone wants to take a look at the other ones, please let me know.
Problem is I don't know if this is my hardware error or FileVault error.
    Thank you,
    Ollie

There are other reports of kernel panics like this one with FileVault. The cause seems to be an OS bug that only affects certain models and/or aftermarket SSD's. Make sure your system is fully updated. If it is, the only workaround I know of is to deactivate FileVault.

  • I have a G5 with a brand new hard drive, when I try and install the os I get a panic we are hanging error. What can I do to load the os

I Get a panic we are hanging error when trying to install the os on a new hard drive on a G5

Yes, the hard drive needs to be formatted and OS X must then be installed.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation.
It's only a lost cause when nothing else works.

This look like a panic in UFS ufs_dirlook() in accessing fbuf structure.
There is a recent bug that was closed as not reproduceable whicvh is similar to this panic.
Bug 16818353 : PANIC IN UFS_DIRLOOK(): BAD TRAP 0X31 WRONG VALUE IN FBUF->FB_ADDR
I will recommend that you open a new Service Request with Oracle Support and provide explorer result along with
the crash dump to  Oracle Support for further investigation. Thanks.

  • SPARCstation 20:  BAD TRAP: type=7

I don't use Sun machines too much, my company mainly sells HP, so sorry for ignorance. But, we have sold some Sun and one customer with an old SPARCstation 20 is reporting a problem.
He says that it attempst to boot, giving the bood device name, Sun copyright notice, etc. But it doesn't get very far, and dies:
    BAD TRAP: type=7, rp=f0243964 addr=0 mmu_fsr=0 rw=0
    : Memory address alignment
    pid=0 ... etc.
I made the educated guess it was memory, so the customer found some of the proprietary memory that this unit uses, and replaced the memory. Didn't help. I did a web search for BAD TRAP type=7, and some of the information I found seems to indicate a processor problem. Does that sound right?
I guess the customer is probably going to need a new machine or get Sun to repair the one he has. Just thought I'd ask for any confirmation.
    Thanks.

    Paul,
Sun will decline to service a SPARCstation-20 system.
It has been classified as End-Of-Service-Life ( EOSL )
It reached that point in 2002 (last ship date in 1997).
    http://www.sun.com/service/eosl/index.html
It is too old a platform for Sun to have any obligation to provide parts or repair services. Even if by some odd chance that their local area's service manager agreed to send someone on a pay-as-you-go basis, it would be less expensive to just buy three or four replacement SS-20s from an online auction site and swap parts until something boots.
    Just on the off-chance...
Do they have a spare disk that they could experiment with?
Re-install the OS to that other drive and see if the system boots.
There could be a corrupt kernel instead of a hardware problem.
They <i>are</i> using Solaris, I hope. A quick trip to Google showed such errors when booting to FreeBSD, though I don't know if that was just a result of how I searched Google.

  • Bad trap: type = 0x31

    Hi,
what's a trap type 0x31 (see below)? Couldn't find any information about this specific trap in the "SPARC_Architecture_Manual_Version_9".
    panic[cpu0]/thread=30001820060: BAD TRAP: type=31 rp=2a10048b0c0 addr=ffffffff00000198
    mmu_fsr=0
    ttymon: trap type = 0x31
    addr=0xffffffff00000198
    cu,
    Stefan

This trap type represents a "Data Access MMU miss".
This is a memory management error that can caused by bad memory or by corrupt OS. SOme Ultrasparc 400MHZ modules also had a general problem with this in 2.5.1 and 2.6 that was fixed by kernel jumbo patches.

  • Word (Office 2001) gives Type 2 error at start-up - help needed

Good day - I'm puzzled by a problem I'm unable to resolve. First, Word (part of the Office 2001 suite) suddenly lost it's pull-down menus, including the About tab, and then, upon relaunch, gave me a Type 2 error and refused to start. It first shows the Start-up 'Gallery' scene, and when you try to open an existing document or a new Word document, it then briefly shows the Word template and then crashes with a Type 2 error (I've run this program for years without any major issues). When I couldn't get this resolved after re-starting with a desktop rebuild, I checked the other applications - Entourage, PowerPoint, and Excel, and they all work fine. I trashed the Microsoft prefs - still no change. I removed the fonts - no change. I reloaded the MS Word portion of the Suite - no change. I zapped the PRAM, tested all the system extensions, even replaced the Internet Prefs - no joy. I even went so far as to do a Clean Install of new System software from my software install disk. Other than this, I haven't loaded any new software or done anything that I can think would cause this, and the odd thing is that the program installed on the hard disk WILL RUN when I boot from a restore or Norton system CD! Yet, when I reboot into my system on the hard drive, I'm back to the error message. With brand new system software the application will crash as before. Short of completing re-installing the Office 2001 suite (which I don't want to do, as I will likely lose all my email and address book and calendar) or re-initializing the hard drive and completely starting over, losing everything, I'm at a loss. I have run Norton (de-fragged the HD, ran anti-virus, etc.), checked my hardware with the hardware test disk, used Disk First Aid, all to no avail - no problems with memory, hardware or software indicated. The only thing I haven't done is update drivers, primarily because I have a newer (3.2.8) disk driver on the system than the Driver Utility has, and I don't want to replace it with 3.2.7. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this, or have any ideas before I'm forced to take this to a Mac repair facility? Thanks in advance...

Greetings to all - Thank you for your replies and help. I did this in reverse order to the posts. Trashing the ASLM, Finder, Mac OS and System Prefs provided the same result - Type 2 error at Word start-up. I had tested extensions using the extensions manager in sets of 5 with no change previously; I restarted with all extensions off (shift key at start-up) and got the same Type 2 error when launching MS Word.
Further info: I've tried this with VM at 1M + installed memory and with VW at double installed memory and it made no difference (I've always used VM in substantial blocks, even with VPC, which I use daily). I've removed ATM 4.6 as a precaution. I've also tried to remove everything that interfaces with MS Word - PrinToPDF comes to mind, as well as all non-original fonts.
I'm puzzled by one thing, which may be nothing but a curiosity, and it may have to do with the way I'm installing MS Word in an attempt to overcome this issue. As you know, Office 2001 provides you with a number which you need to retain upon installation. My original number, then, becomes superceded with each install; in other words, the last 4 numbers changes, out of the original 54092-XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXX number provided. A number shows up on the initial lauch window; the problem I detect is that this number isn't the number given at the last install, but the ORIGINAL number I was given when the program was originally installed. This 'suggests' that perhaps the problem is with MS Word itself, as you'd think the program at lauch would recognize the new ID number given when the program files are re-installed using custom install. As an aside, I originally tried to do a 'drag and drop install of the Office 2001 folder, as suggested on the install disk; the system read the item numbers and gave me a 'preparing to copy' message and a spinning beach ball for 20 minutes before I was more or less forced to restart the computer with the reset button. I'm unsure this makes any difference, given that the program will launch with a boot disk, and all of the other modules will launch as they always have.
I'm appreciative of your help and comments. I didn't realize that this forum existed before, having been using a local MUG forum exclusively, and I suspect I'll use it a lot in the coming months as I coax an aging machine to continue working. This may be the first time in 20 years of Mac ownership that a technician might be called for, but I'm hoping for an easier solution.

  • Last Trap: Data Access Error

    Hello,
I don't know what the appropropriate forum to ask this would be; please
suggest another one if this is not the best one.
We have a PCI-Express board (that we developed) that we're attempting to
use in a Sparc system. It is an Ultra 25 (also says Ultra SPARC IIIi).
We've attempted to use both Solaris 9 and 10.
With our board in an x8 slot, the system will not boot. If our board
is in an x16 slot, the system boots okay and the system can access
the board properly. Our board is an x1 board.
The following error message is seen during boot attempts:
"ERROR:/pci@e,600000/pci@1/pci@0/usb@1c,1: Last Trap: Data Access Error"
In addition, systems are able to boot and access our boards properly when the
boards are in x4, x8, and x16 slots of x86 systems running Windows and other
    operating systems.
Could anyone suggest what might be wrong?
    Thanks,
    Nathan

    Hello Sane,
I'm seeing a wierd problem on a new v890 server...
Record the current OBP settings, then issue set-defaults.
If the problem persists, open a service case.

  • Type-two error

All of a sudden my Performa has addressing errors. This started a day and a half ago--at the end of the work day I was rushing to get the day's mail out, and my PLW NT stopped working. It's been doing that for over a year now. The two amber lights blink simultaneously, indicating a problem in the fuser assembly. (I've addressed this problem elsewhere in the Apple Discusson forum.)
Well, what's different this time is that since Monday night I've been getting a lot more Type 2 errors in the Performa. Now Acrobat Reader 5.0 won't start up at all. Everytime I try to start it, I get a dialog box saying that it won't start because of Type Two.
I have some problems with other applications, too. For example, MS Word locks up seemingly at random. AOL refuses to run more than two Flashsessions in a row (but it's been doing that for a couple of years.) Netscape occasionally locks up, too.
Acrobat is the big problem. I have a PDF file that I must print. Yesterday morning I could get the file to open, but then the LaserWriter conked out, and my back-up Stylewriter reports that it doesn't have the memory to print in Acrobat. Now, though, I can't get Acrobat to open at all.
This addressing error occurs regardless of whether I boot off the internal hard drive or from a back-up system on the external hard drive. I ran Disk Warrior on the internal hard drive. It reported 3-12% of the data out of place among the four partitions on the hard drive. It then claimed to have successfully repaired the drive. Disk FirstAid and Tech Tool 3.0.4 report no problem with the internal hard drive. Using Disk Utility I installed a new driver on the internal hard drive twice, without effect. I have trashed almost all the preferences that changed in the last two days (leaving only AOL's Access Numbers, Address Book, and Filing Cabinet.) No effect.
Occasionally the PLW NT will work after I restart the computer and work only in MS Word. But as soon as I get any crash in any application, the printer stops and may not start again the rest of the day.
Does anyone know why my computer is suddenly throwing out these type-two errors and what I can do about it? TIA

    Hi, Richard -
Given that the problem does not appear to be program-related (it happens in more than one or two), nor even OS install related (it happens when you boot to either drive), it would appear to be a hardware fault of some kind.
Try reseating the RAM in the Performa, and any user-serviceable cards in the printer.
Check the cabling - unplug and re-plug all connections to ensure good contact.
If you are using a LocalTalk connection to the printer, make sure none of the small resistor plugs have fallen out of the unused ports in the transceivers.
