Boot panic

My configuration is:
Athlon XP2100+
512 DDRAM
2 9.1GB SCSI HDs
Adaptec 29160N
3C905CTX NIC
Solaris 8 10/01
At Webstart installation, I let it default to interactive. Then I get:
boot panic: trap type e, error at <different addresses>
I'm booting from the CD-ROM with a downloaded copy. Occasionally I
have seen messages like:
bogus sector number
short read. 0x2000 char read
just before the panic
I thought about replacing the CD-ROM, but then and just for the sake
of confirming, I installed W2K using the same configuration without
any problems.
Any hint on what it may be causing this situation?
Thanks beforehand for your comments.

The same problem is described here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82065 However, I don't know whether something was fixed in the package, or in the kernel. Either way, you might be able to work around this problem by installing an old kernel from /var/cache/pacman/pkg.
You need to chroot from a live-cd into your existing system to install that
Yeah, I've seen that thread. I have already looked up on how to downgrade my kernel (wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … g_Packages), but that page only talks about downgrading packages... Your message was quiete clear. Many thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it out and report the results.
Okay, I've installed the LTS kernel now (2.6.32.31-1) and so far, so good.

  • FileVault 2 seems to be causing kernel boot panics

    Hello,
I'm on a 10.8.2 Mountain Lion OS X (13-inch, Mid 2010), no new updates are available. I turned on FileVault 2 a few months ago and since then I've had a lot of kernel panics while booting. Sometimes it just booted ok and sometimes it panicked. Sometimes even twice in a row. Sometimes it created a crash report, sometimes it did not.
This is actually a clean-ish install, it's not an upgrade from Lion. I don't use Parallels Desktop or VMware as other threads sometimes mention. I don't use any NTFS driver. Although I do have Flash Player, GPGPreferences, Growl and Java plugins installed (I don't know if they have anything to do with those drivers).
Before I turned the Vault on, no boot panics.
After I turned it on, sometimes panic, sometimes not, couldn't find any system in it. About 50 % chance of a crash.
After I turned it back off, no panics so far.
So I turned it off today and tried restarting about twenty times (shut downs, restarts) and no kernel panic so far. I also installed Memtest and had it run in single user mode once and everything was ok.
I have three very similar general protection fault reports, I'm going to post the latest one here but if anyone wants to take a look at the other ones, please let me know.
Problem is I don't know if this is my hardware error or FileVault error.
    Thank you,
    Ollie

There are other reports of kernel panics like this one with FileVault. The cause seems to be an OS bug that only affects certain models and/or aftermarket SSD's. Make sure your system is fully updated. If it is, the only workaround I know of is to deactivate FileVault.

After making a single large file I again cheked the DVD iso file and found
the sum to match with the one on solaris server.
After burning the Solaris 10 DVD again at 2x speed . Now I have been

any vetren would care to give tip

What's wrong and how can i determine where i have errors?

    Hi segmantal and Benedict_White.
I have been finally able to diagnose and repair the problem: the right driver is there (sata_nv), but there is a bug/deficiency in the sata_nv driver with kernels 2.6.8+ for NForce3 250 chipsets (e.g., in my Shuttle SN95G5). This has been reported as a bug in some other distributions (e.g., Red Hat) and at the OSDL bug web site. There is a proposed code repair/kernel compilation fix (which I have tried successfully).
This sata_nv driver worked properly with earlier kernels (and I as able to boot with DevFS and udev and all relevant modules with kernel 2.6.7). But things went to pieces when I upgraded to 2.6.8 or 2.6.9. The Red Hat and OSDL bug reports coincide precisely with what I'd been experiencing.
I have submitted this bug with background material to the Arch bug site and you can find the gory details there if you're so inclined.
    Regards,
    Win

  • Stop sign during boot, panic when boot from cd

Figured out my monitor problem; it seems to work now; however another problem appeared.
When I try booting up normally, the Apple logo appears for a brief second and then is replaced by a 'stop' sign (circle w/ line across).
I already tried reseting the nv-ram, pram, already tried booting in every single mode possible; tried booting from the 10.4 Tiger install cd - however after about 3 seconds of it reading the disk, I get a "We are hanging here..." panic.
My boot volume is a extended RAID - two 30gb hard drives, plus another 40gb HD by itself. It worked perfectly before. None of the data is backed up; and I really need to recover it asap.

You are getting a kernal panic, which is usually caused by a hardware problem. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?

  • Installed 10.6.7 and Getting Kernel Panic on Boot

I got the notice to update to 10.6.7 on my 15" 2.66 i7 and when it restarted to install the update, I immediately got a kernel panic. I was able to get it to boot into safe mode and I did a time machine backup. After some research and work..

    Help...
The only thing left that I can think of is that the update fubarred the HDD. I put an aftermarket 640GB drive into it about 3 months ago. I was considering re-installing the factory drive and see what happens. I have tried everything that I could within the OSX restore discs, and nothing seems to help. It seems weird that a 35 pass + restore didn't cure it, if it was software related. Which makes me think firmware/mechanical.
    Thoughts?

I think you missed the part where I said:
"I ran a 35 pass zero out, and then straight reinstalled OS-X from my discs. I still get the same panic from boot."
I still had issues after a fresh install. So, I did a 35 pass zero out and re-installed. Same error.
I just finished installing the factory drive, and mysteriously everything works fine now. Either the update corrupted the aftermarket drive, or the update causes the computer to recognize my aftermarket drive and make it "not work". Either way, I am just going to leave the factory drive in it, as I am selling the laptop and getting a newer version.

  • Solaris 10 x86 install boot error.

    Hi all.
VERY new to the whole Solaris thing (Hell, I only first touched Solaris today), but I've played with Linux and soforth in the past, so I thought I'd give it a try. Well, not working awfully well. Pop CD in, wait for it to boot, everything's going fine and dandy until pop, it spurts out:
"Boot panic: trap type e, error 0 at 11774a"
and 4 lines of things like that
    then:
    " Entering boot debugger:
    [11774a]:"
And leaves me at a prompt. Played around with said prompt for a bit, but there's nothing really there that I can understand. So, rebooted, re-burnt the .isos, played around, had a look on Google, but there's not much there. So, and help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Enaku.

    yeah thanks for that one..
i already run the 5 .exe's and generate the iso file.... ready now to burn the 5 files (not on .iso format, thats clear now to me). i have read some installation manual that the drive where i will put the second OS which is the solaris should be unformatted and should be a FAT32? any comments about this stuff?
    btw,
i already run the check tool, and it says it is possible to install the OS. but theres a third party installer on my audio...
    question now is...
do i have to partition again the hard disk to set my drive to "unformatted" FAT32?
    thanks.

  • I'm getting a kernel panic on startup after restore hd

Long story made short...installed Google Music to use with my new phone...next day Mac running slow, left it running while I was out, came home to frozen screen...booted in safe mode and clicked off everything that was running in background. Tried to reboot and it kept shutting down when reaching grey screen. (I orginally had leopard and upgraded to snow leopard) got my OSX (leopard) install cd and booted to disc, disk utilities and check disc...originally would only let me verify, which failed, then unmounted and was able to get repair disc...unable to repair. I erased hd and then restored from my time machine backup, now when I boot I get kernel panic on startup. I'm running of external hd which I formatted and installed leopard essential software. So my question is, is my HD shot? Are there other step I can take? I can't afford to bring this in to someone. This is most of what my screen says when I boot:
    Panic(cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad): "Process 1 exec of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 8\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504 . 15 . 3/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c.3145

any and all help would be appreciated to help me resolve this

I had similar problems several months ago. I suspect this happens when host pc does not have floppy drive(or bios somehow misreports it) as it was in my case. Solaris 8 seems to work fine in the same environment, so I keep using it for now. Possible workaround might be to use DCA from Solaris 8: Installation of Sol9 started just fine after I entered Sol8 DCA and asked it to boot from Sol9 CD.
Hope this problem will be fixed in subsequent Sol9 releases.

Maybe a driver problem?? I have tried all drivers i found (from HP or Broadcoms Website), but it doesnt solve the problem.

Hold down the STOP key and also press the A key to get the Sparc 20 to come to the ok prompt. At the ok prompt type boot cdrom
press enter and away you go. Solaris will 'at a later time' ask you if you want to format the drive.
One Note: Sometimes the Sparc can be a pain to get to the ok prompt. Watch your keyboard lights ie: Num lock, Caps lock etc. right after they get tested and flash, press stop and A. Sometimes you have to hold down the stop and press the A key by itself. Hope this helps.

  • Failing Drive - Disk Utility not working either

Recently my drive started failing to the point that it was clear that I needed to do some maintenance.
I'm backed up to an external HD, so I wasn't too worried about saving the image - just wanted to get up and running again. I started by trying to use the repair functions under the First Aid tabs. This would run for a while and error out a little less than 1/2 way through.
Because I didn't care about saving the data, I decided I'd got through the erase and reinstall process. The erase seemed to work ok, but reinstalling would fail. I tried this process 3 times and wasn't able to install correctly.
This morning, I decided to try and really wipe the drive using the "Zero Out" function. That process has been running for about 3 hours thus far and seems to have frozen at about 1/20 complete (that is - on the progress bar, 1/20 is blue while the rest remains white.) It hasn't moved in about 2 hours.
Any thoughts on next steps for:
    a) What to do about this freeze
    b) Assuming I can get out of the freeze how to proceed?
    thanks
(oh, and I'm not certain about the OS version - it's what came with the computer (15 inch G4) but I can't eject the disk as the computer thinks it's still mid-process.

Hi there - thanks for the quick responses. Since I started looking through these post, I've been amazed at the community.
First, I think that you may be correct and the zero out is moving, albiet glacially. I put a sticker on the screen to mark progress and it seems to have done something (although, at this point, it could be an optical illusion.) I'd guess that it's closer to 1/10 done now after 8 hours.
My computer was exhibiting strange behavior - and the annoying (constant beachball) became the very annoying (would boot only every 3rd time, sometimes not at all) to the unusable (upon boot - PANIC! error.)
I backed up to a LaCie external drive using the included "Silverkeeper" SW. I am not familiar with the restore procedure, but had the idea once the computer started booting into PANIC! (probably a bad idea) that I'd use the fix utility and if not just start with a clean slate and go again.
As for the specific questions asked -
I did not run S.M.A.R.T. (and am not sure what it is)
I did not run a HW test.
    Thanks,
    Stephen

  • Artifacting on external screen

I use an external screen, but in the last several weeks I have noticed artifacting on the displays (doesn't show when I use the macbook pro alone (e.g. the macbook's screen without the external monitor plugged in). It comes and goes, the artifacting (i think that's what one would call this) doesn't occur in the same places either. The external monitor is plugged in via the TB port using a TB to HDMI adpator. I've replaced the adaptor and the HDMI, but this still occurs... anyone have any insight?

+do I have to run specific diagnostics? Or is that done automatically?+
As long as you hold down 'shift' it's done automatically.
+I ran Disk utility and tried to repair the MAC OS X disk. Unfortunately the macbook seems to restart randomly+
That's weird and shouldn't happen, I can't think what would cause that behaviour to be honest.
OK the Kernel Panic Log does help
It's caused by GeForce Kexts (kernel extensions) that can be removed and it should fix the Boot panic (and might even fix the screen problem) instructions on what do to here (Boot holding s to force single user/command line mode then enter the commands then reboot)

Take it slowly and type each command carefully and let us know how it goes.

  • Startup on external screen

    Dear all,
As my MacBook Pro screen is causing problems, I was wondering whether it is possible to set the external screen as standard. So that my Macbook Pro will start up, not on the laptop screen, but just on an external screen connected via HDMI.
Hopefully you guys can help me on this.
    Thanks,
    Jasper

  • How to install Solaris 8 on IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop

    Hello,
I would like to install Solaris 8 on my IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop and I am facing two kinds of problems:
    -1- I cannot boot on the Matshushita DVDROM which is shipped with : i have got a boot panic ;
-2- My SAVAGE/IX 8MB Video Card is not recognised.
    ANY HELP APPRECIATED
    [email protected]

    Hi There,
Although laptops are not officially supported, I am aware that another
customer managed to install their system over a network connection
    due to local CDROM issues.
This may be something to try if you have access to another SOlaris System with a local CDROM.
As for the Video Card, I have not found any records of anyone
else attempting to use this particular chipset and so you may be
limited to just standard VGA in this case.
    Regards
    Derek SUN-DTS
