Boot/Partition Error

After partitioning my hard drive, first using Disk Utility and then GParted (to change the format of this new partition to something besides Mac Extended Journaled) and then an incomplete install of FreeBSD onto this new partition (note, the partition containing my OS X still worked fine until I began the actual installation of FreeBSD) my MacBook will not boot. Using ubuntu LiveCD, I was still able to mount the partition containing OS X and explore the file system, and all the files were still there; however, it seems the boot partition has some error with it, and also the OS X partition has lost whatever makes it able to be recognized by OS X's Disk Utility.
If I boot to the setup DVD for Leopard, the Disk Utility does not even recognize that there is a valid Mac (hfs+) formatted partition on the hard drive, though it can find a second partition which should be listed as unallocated space.
Is there any way to simply fix the boot partition and make the valid hfs+ partition recognized again without formatting and making a clean install?

I have the rEFIt boot utility installed, which blocks the automatic EFI boot of OS X and allows you to choose boot options. Apparently, the problem with the boot partition was that it wanted something to be in the unallocated space (the mysterious second partition) when there wasn't anything. I just did a basic install of ubuntu Linux onto the free space (giving it a partition and OS where it wanted one) and everything works fine again.

  • Boot partition error message

My mid 2010 iMac i7 will not boot past the apple logo? I'm running 10.7.3. I have tried restoring from TM backup from recovery mode (worked the last time this happened) however upon completion it returns to the recovery screen? I made a disk of Lion when I downloaded the first time (followed same instructions sourced from numerous websites) which does not seem to work when i set to start up from this disk, just gets to the grey screen and flicks between the apple logo, a folder icon with a question mark and the circle with line through? Now I can't eject the disk either, a message appears that system can't eject and to make sure all applications are closed? Not sure how to go about closing these applications without being able to start the system? When I tried booting from the Macintosh HD I got a message that the boot cache partition was faulty? I have ran disk permissions etc all ok.
Is my HD gone or is there anything else I can try? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Ok so I spoke to tech support, who suggested deleting all data on the HD by re-partitioning and then re-installing snow leopard from start up disk, updating software then re-downloading lion. All of which worked well until lion had finished installing and re- started. At this point I got a kernel crash and that was it, all over with only solution a new HD.
Kinda mysterious because snow leopard worked when I tested it before downloading and installing lion? Disk repair reported no problems either? Tech support were somewhat preplexed as to the reasons it seemed like they had not encountered this issue before? They said that there are only 2 reasons this could happen and that is corrupt lion download from the app store, which they obviously said was highly unlikely, or that lion uses a part of the HD that snow leopard does not and that is the faulty section of the HD.
Anyway they are ordering a new HD so we'll see if that works thanks again.
    Cheers

  • Error code -50 on boot partition (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) )

I`m often experiencing error code -50 when trying to change or move files on boot partition (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) ) on my MacBook PRO 5,5.
I already know that this error is related to MS-DOS formatted disks. But this one is all the time Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
All the files are created on Mac OS X 10.6.7 - so there can`t be a problem with a filename.
Is there another solution than corrupted harddisk?

while the next error code -50, I looked into Console and kernel says: "BootCache: too many history clusters (151, limit 151)". So that`s the cause of error, but how can I manage with it?
I tried this one in Terminal
    code:
    /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl stop
but no success. "-BootCacheControl: could not stop cache: Operation not permitted"
    any ideas?

  • Invalid Partition Error with each boot after BIOS update???

    Need help from the experts:
I have all of a sudden had problems with every boot, receiving an "invalid partition" error every timeI start my machine. ONly significant thing I have done lately is flash bios to v 1.1 on the K8N Neo2 Plat board using MSI tool. I had no such problems prior to flashing to 1.1, though I have had other problems related to memory voltage...
What, if anything, does BIOS have to do with it? my drives are both 160GB, formatted NTFS each a single large partition...is the system thinking that's an invalid partition size?
At any rate, I have already tried a complete low level format of my drives and re-install of Win XP Pro from scratch to make sure nothing was corrupted, and sure enough, upon next boot (needed to complete some driver installs) I get the same error. Of note, I also get an error re: one of my 2 DVD drives...related?
So, for now, the only way around this is to boot using XP CD, execute 'R' for recovery, then use DOS command 'FIXMBR' to write a new boot record, and then I am able to get back in...until the next re-boot.
Have had numerous issues with this board / bios, though this is the most profound one.
Need help...this is confounding me. What should I be looking into, trying next?

  • Stumped On How To Fix HFS+Partition Error!! Help!

WEll hello and i am having so much trouble with my mac software. My current setup is as follows.
-Windows XP Home Edition Installed As Base OS
    -80GB Hard Drive Partitioned
    -65GB Windows NTFS Partition
    -15GB Mac Partition
    -Intel Celeron Processor
-Multiboot Software Set Up As Well
Here's my problem. I made all the partitions correctly and installed the Mac software onto my pc with already had Windows XP installed on it. The install went smoothly and the disk was mounted and formatted correctly. But after the install of the Mac OS I restart my pc and boot into Mac. Immediatly a message comes up saying HFS+ Partition Error. I have tried tons of things to fix it but everywhere I go it tells you have to fix erros related to intalling Windows onto a Mac. But luckily my Windows Xp still boots up fine. Someone out please help me!!
    Great appreciation if ya do

  • R61 R&R won't start after "unmountable boot volume" error

    Hello all,
New user, first post - after problem, of course.
I have an R61 Thinkpad with Windows XP on it.  (SP2 or SP3, not sure).  Has worked flawlessly for years, then the other day I got the dreaded "unmountable boot volume" error and it would not start.
No problem - I re-start, hit the ThinkVantage button, then hit F11 to use the R&R hidden on a separate partition of the hard drive........I get the black screen with the big progress bar, ok, then a blue screen......then nothing.  Hangs up and sits there.  I have repeated this about 5 times now.
No problem! - I was smart enough to make an R&R CD set a while ago!  Put the primary R&R disk in the CD drive, start the machine, ThinkPad button, F12 this time to choose boot from CD.....much CD activity ensues and I once again get the black screen with the big progress bar.  It takes much longer, and I get teh blue screen - BUT - then it goes one extra step to display the "ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery 4" screen with the life preserver image.
Excellent, I thing - except it then hangs there.  Just sits there.  No disk activity.  No keys will do anything.
I can find no threads here or on any other forum with this particular issue.
Am I fubar?  Or is there something else I can do?
    Thanks a bunch.
    Solved!

Hi jim, welcome to the forums,
Is the hard drive recognised in BIOS, was there an entry in the boot list against HDD0?
Regardless of it being shown in BIOS / boot list or not, the first thing I would do is to reseat the hard drive and see if that helps, maybe over time it's lost contact to the mainboard socket. If you don't know how to do this you can find out at the R61 movies site.
The next thing I would do is run a hard drive diagnosis check from a bootable cd, these can be downloaded from all HDD manufacturer's websites e.g. Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test.  It may be that the drive has simply gone bad after all those years of work.
Let us know how you get on

  • Trouble installing Lion due to partition error

    Hi everyone,
So I don't know a whole lot about computers, and I have had my macbook for a couple years now and decided to install Lion last night. After I downloaded it, I got an error message saying that it could not be installed and I needed to change my HD's partitioning to GUID. The internal HD I have in my mac now I installed myself, and I must have accidentally clicked apple partition map instead of GUID when I installed it, which didn't cause a problem until now (my macbook has an intel processor). So i backed up everything on my HD to an external HD using carbon copy, hoping that I would just be able to reformat/partition my internal HD correctly and move everything back onto it from my external drive. I booted my computer using the external drive, and tried to repartition using disk utility, but I keep getting a partition error message that tells me the disk cannot be unmounted. I got the same message when I tried just erasing the disk first. Anyone know how I can fix this?
    Thanks, and Happy Holidays!!

Try starting from your Snow Leopard Install disc.

  • OVM 3.2.1 / OEL 5.6 Template:  How to resize the  /boot partition

I need to enlarge the /boot partition from its default 100 MB to 300 MB for OEL 5.6.
I am using OVM_OL5U6_X86_64_PVM_10GB.tgz from Oracle edelivery.
Examining the modifyjeos manpage there is no function for extending and/or modifying /boot that I can locate unless it is an undocumented feature.
The way the disk partitions are laid out in the template make it very daunting as well with
    /dev/xvda1 /boot
    /dev/xvda2 /
    /dev/xvda3 swamp
Perhaps there is an undocumented means via modifyjeos to change the partitioning layout ? or, even better, increase the size of /boot inside the template itself via modifyjeos or some other OVM 3.2.1 and.or OEL 5.X magic
    Thanks

  • Partition error, troubleshooting has been unsuccessful.

Like many before me, whenever I attempt to partition my hard drive using boot camp, I recieve the "Files cannot be moved" error message. After troubleshooting online for a couple of days, I'm still nowhere. I've download iDefrag and defragmented the disk, and have removed any large files that could have caused the error, yet, I still get the same message when I try and partition my HD again. I don't see any point in reformatting the disk like the error message asks as my HD is already in the extended journaled version, and I already defragmented the disk.
What else can I do? Is there some other benefit to reformatting the disk that I'm unaware of? I'll admit that my computer knowledge is limited, but I do consider myself somewhat useful.
For reference, I'm using a Macbook Pro 2011, 8gb ram, 750gb HD, running Lion.
Reponses are very much appreciated. Options that don't include reinstalling the OS would be great, but I know that it might be the only option at this point...

    Shrink the partition then try
The error and reason to erase and restore - preferably from a clone - is to consolidate ALL free space into one contiguous chunk.
iDefrag works best when run from and booted from another hard drive where it is free to work, not from the same. IOW, boot from your backup clone. And the #1 step is to backup before doing anything.
I prefer to have bootable backups in addition to any other type backup.
Multiple sets, redundant, and so if a drive or one set fails, if TimeMachine dies I have another set.
Before Lion the user had to insure that they had an emergency boot partition to perform repairs and mainteance, or use a DVD which is limited, older version, or use fsck and Safe Boot.
    Shrink
    Repair
Resize again to extend the partition
Personally I like to do the above knowing I have bootable backup, doing it from another drive rather than "pick yourself up by your own bootstraps"
Some methods work for some but not 100% and consistent for everyone.
They are all just tools and techniques.
Cloning - superduper, carbon copy cloner, Clone X 4, etc
defrag programs like iDefrag and iPartition
    Shrinking partition
Repair the boot drive (from your Lion Recovery )
Paragon CampTune 9.5.x also ($19, resizes partition between Windows and Mac also)

  • /boot partition empty

hii.. i am new on arch, i have trouble...
after i upgrade arch using "pacman -Su" and i reboot but it show error, it seem like cannot find root partition... so i do reinstall grub with my another ubuntu linux, i do update the grub and try boot to arch again...
it show error that "you need to load kernel first", i found that my /boot partition is empty...
how can i recovery the linux image on boot partition
    i have separate boot partition....
    please help me...
    sorry for my english...

    Root, or Boot?
If /boot is empty, it probably means it is a separate partition and is not mounted.  Look at the output mount.  If it does not make sense, post the output here, along with the contents of your /etc/fstab file.
If root (/) is empty, then there is something horribly wrong -- or you are very confused
    Edit:
so i do reinstall grub with my another ubuntu linux, i do update the grub and try boot to arch again...
Would you care to elaborate on exactly what you did here?  I have a bad feeling about this.

My /boot Partition was somehow deleted.
    How can I recreate it?
I've been trying to boot from a LiveCD then un-archive the Grub and Kernel26 pkgs from a flash drive.
    Then run:
    mkinitcpio -c /mnt/sda3/etc/mkinitcpio.conf -k 2.6.31-ARCH -b /mnt/sda3/ -g /mnt/sda3/boot/kernel26.img
Everything seems to work except it fails to detect /dev/sda3.

    1) Boot on your live CD
    2) Launch fdisk on your boot disk and create a new partition
    3) mkfs.ext3 your new partition
    mkfs.ext3 /dev/your_boot_partition
    4) mount your / partition and /boot
    mkdir /mnt/my_system
    mount /dev/your_system_partition /mnt/my_system
    mount /dev/your_boot_partition /mnt/my_system/boot
    5) Chroot into your system :
    chroot /mnt/my_system /bin/bash
    6) Install grub and kernel26
    pacman -S grub kernel26
    7) Edit your /mnt/my_system/boot/menu.lst to reflect the change
    8) Exit your chroot and umount yours partitions and reboot

  • Nuked T43! Need Recovery boot partition CD

It seems that this is what I need based upon my research. Bought nuked (DBAN) T43. Purchased R&R from Lenovo, but cannot recover and re-install system. Get error messages.  Does this sound correct? Can anyone help with T43 boot partition CD?....or must I call Lenovo Customer Service ($$$$$). Thanks for reading and trying to help me.

    Three possible issues:
    a) Defective or improperly formatted hard drive. Download PC-Doctor for DOS, burn a CD, boot from it, run all HDD diagnostics. If the drive proves good, do a full erase on it.
    b) Bad media drive. Try swapping with another, or use an external drive.
    c) Improperly burned CD.
Good luck and keep us posted.

  • Partitioning error in bootcamp

also why do i get a partitioning error that says "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files connot be moved"
the seubtext says "Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
ps sorry about the link, its the only way to copy and paste

It means one of two things:
    1. You are trying to create too large a partition and are running into a part of the drive OS X is currently using.
    2. Your request needs contiguous space, but the drive is slightly fragmented and Boot Camp Assistant cannot allocate the amount of contiguous space requested.
You can try configuring a smaller Windows partition if that's feasible. Otherwise, you need to defragment your hard drive.

    1. Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the external one.
    2. Boot from the external hard drive.
    3. Erase the internal hard drive.
    4. Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    After startup do the following:
    Erase internal hard drive
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.  Do not quit Disk Utility.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
    1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    3. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure.
