Boot problem, RAM error but RAM fine, help!

I've been having trouble booting for some time now.
At first I didn't get any response when I pressed the power button (black screen, no chime). The force restart <ctrl, apple, power> would get it going after a few tries but unreliable and it could go for weeks without a successful boot. Now I can hardly boot and get a RAM error (4 beeps) at the startup, more frequently now.
It won't boot from an external firewire drive or installation CD.
Tried the following;
Disk repair, when I eventually got it to boot on CD after many attempts said everything was fine.
Everything was fine on the hardware check.
Changed the RAM, twice!
Tried this ribbon cable insulating thing I found on another thread, it booted up straight away and then not again for ages. Probably just a coincidence.
Reset PRAM, PMU etc.
Paid a service place €50 to tell me what I knew and that it's probably the logic board, €800 odd to replace... no thank you.
It works perfectly when it's up and running. I did get the odd crash when waking from sleep.
So my choices are, now that I've booted it again after a few weeks of attempts;
1. Leave it on indefinitely as a desk top, don't sleep and don't install anything requiring restart, like Quicktime so I can't see iTunes videos.
2. Start saving!
3. Be saved by some genius out there...?

Have you tried isolating which RAM slot may be at fault. If the RAM has been changed and the problem is intermittent it could be a loose connection between the RAM holder and logic board.Actually 4 beeps isn't a RAM error but rather a ROM error. This would point towards a new logic board being required ££££. You could take a risk on ebay. There's plenty of Ti owners who smashed displays or broken hinges who break their Powerbooks up to sell in parts on ebay.

    Hello,
I just set up my new rig, the system specs are..

    K8N Neo4 Platinum PCI-E (non SLI)
    2x80gb SATA (insockets 5 and 6) Silicon
    2x512 ram generic

The entire install went well.. It zipped through windows98... But when it tired to Boot windows98.. it went really really slow.. The animation bar at the bottom was chugging.. like lagging.. and took well over 10 minutes to fully load..
I check RAM was not it.. re-connected.. was not it.. new SATA cables.. no idea any help would do.. getting impatient and tired =O must get it up tonight!

Don't know if you or many people have seen this it's appeared over the last few days K8N Neo4 Platinum  -  NOTE: NVIDIA nForce 3/4 Series board DO NOT support Windows® 98/ME
There are people running 98 but my own understanding was that 98 could only use a sata drive as a data drive & could not be installed on a sata drive. Where have you installed it ???

  • Dm4 wont boot- hard disk error but passes hard disk test

My dm4 laptop froze yesterday and I was forced to restart it- it is 3 years old but I have had no issues with it. When trying to reboot it will not start and if I run windows repair it comes up with the failed 2 hdd error. I thought it was a hard drive failure as I originally got a 305 error code when running the hard drive test. Upon opening system diagnostics I ran the hard disk test and it passed no problem. However if I run any of the other tests- start up, run in, or system tune up, I get the error Hard Disk 1. I tried the hard disk test again and it passes. Ive run Avg virus scan and found no threats. I have no idea what is going on- I did a BIOS rollback and the computer still wont boot up. What is happening and can I recover my data?

With the intermittent errors,it sounds like the hard drive is failing and will need to be replaced. A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.
As for whether it is possible to recover your files it depends on how much life is left in the hard drive. Many times you can remove it, attach it to a USB Adapter or install in a USB Enclosure to plug into  working machine via usb port and copy files over to the hard drive of host machine.
If you need more help selecting/replacing the hdd post back with full Model & Product Number as listed on the Service Tag attached to bottom of laptop.

  • Boot problems with older ti-book - please help.

I have a ti-book that is giving me the flashing question mark when I startup, then nothing further.
I have tried to boot from the install disk, but the combo drive is not working properly (didn't work properly before this issue).
I can boot using an external fw drive with os x installed, but cannot repair, verify, or anything to the internal drive using os x disk utility.
I also cannot select it from the 'startup volume' menu within system preferences.
I have read many posts about some of these issues, but not with my situation concerning all this and a non-functioning optical drive.
I also have zapped the p-ram, for what it's worth, and have tried booting with various ram modules.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi jarrod,
You've posted in the Titanium folder, but you list a 17" PB (and not a TiBook), so I'm not sure which you're asking about. If it's the 17", you'd do better to post in the Aluminum folder. TiBooks are 15", have ports on the back, dark colored keys, and CPU speeds from 400MHz to 1GHz.
Have you tried running fsck or booting in Safe Mode?

  • MSI P7N SLI-FI LGA 775 nForce 750i booting problem and error message

Got this board a week ago and I'm having some issues with booting-sometimes. I power it on and it just hangs there doesn't do noting. I hit the restart button and it powers on, but gives me a red letter error message that "previous overclocking has failed and settings were restored to default". But I never overclocked it. The settings were at default in the first place. After it boots and goes into Windows I have no problem at all, works great. But as soon as I reboot it i hangs again until I restart it or power it off. I tried different power options in the bios, but I get the same problem. I checked the MSI web site for BIOS update but there isn't any. So if somebody knows a solution to this problem let me know. Thanks.

I know the 7600GS doesn't recommend a PSU with a lot of power(15 - 17 A), but you're running two of them in SLI.  Your PSU only has 18A on the +12V rail. This could very well be your issue.  Below are some good single +12V rail PSUs, Corsairs and PC Power & Cooling.  You can also look for Silverstone single rail PSUs, but they tend to be pricier.  If you can't get anything other than split-rail, post back and we'll try to make some recommendations.

  • Virtual Hosting Problem - SMTP error, POP is fine

    Hi all,
I set up my server with this domain: brandingforces.com
Additionally I did managed it to get 9 other domains running.
Everything is working fine, even webmail and POP.
However, on the virtual hosted domain steinberginc.com, I do get this error:
Cannot send message using the server mail.steinberginc.com
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings.
I am not sure where the problem might be since other domains are sending fine SMTP.
I did set up all domains in SA-mail-hosting-virtual domains...... I listed them without the WWW.
Each domain has one IP for the nameserver and 1 IP as the mailserver (in machine field)
    Can someone help me?

my fault. old email settings on mail were still configured on port 26 instead of 25. What were the old settings from the other server.

  • Windows freezes when ipod is connected but charges fine-HELP!

I've had my 80GB ipod video since October. Its never frozen before or anything like that.2 Days ago,I connected it to the computer and a few seconds later, the computer froze.Ever since, everytime I connect it,Windows freezes.I don't think there is a problem with the USB cable because it carges fine on my plug and also after the computer freezes,it keeps charging but no "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen.Thing is,it says "Do Not Disconnect" before th computer starts and then it stops and charges as soon as the Windows XP logo comes up and then the computer doesn't even start, freezes at the Windows XP screen.Help would be much appreciated.
    Thank You
    Ian

Usually theres no need for this, cuz when you uninstall iTUnes it does not erase the iTUnes Library, nor any music on the PC.
That said its always a GREAT idea to back up your music regularly. Apple covers this on there site by using iTUnes to burn backups on CD, but it doesn't include backup of the all important iTunes Library file that contains all the playlist rating playcount Ect ect here it is tho http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93033
Long as you have all your music in one folder like "My Music" you can just copy it to an external Harddrive. that will backup all the music AND all the iTUnes librarys and crap since its in the "My Music" folder by default

  • Same problem with payment but still need help to s...

    Hello,
Could one of the mods. please respond to this?
Still have a problem with paying bill/dd's. As my next bill is due by the end of the week (23/9/11) I will be billed for the whole amount. Due to current circumstances I need to be able to have a monthly budget. This is something I tried to do but without going over old ground this is currently not working. As setting up a DD requires payment of outstanding amounts I am looking for now is options which BT can offer to be able to pay my bill in regular monthly payments. I also have been charged for late payments which is not helping the issue. Could you please clarify what options are available for me to do this? I believe that I have shown 'goodwill' on my behalf to make payments but to stop this from remianing an ongoing problem I would like to resolve this ASAP. Thanks.

  • I know what the problem is. But can anyone help me fix it?

Please, please somebody help me uninstall and reinstall my audio driver since it is not letting me play any music.

Right click on my computer, and choose properties. Then click the hardware tab, then click the device manager button. Click on the Sound, Video, Game Controller plus sign to expand that part, and find your audio driver and right click on that and choose Uninstall. After that, close all open windows and reboot your computer. The audio drivers should be automatically reinstalled when the computer reboots.
    I hope this helps you.

  • Cold boot problems

    Hi out there,
I have a problem with my MSI 6590. When I boot it hangs on th detection of the IDE HDD. It stays there for about 25 seconds and then tries the floppy and cd-rom. As it does not find an OS it stopps. When warmbooting from there the boot works as HDD is recognized and everything works fine from there on.
Anybody out there who has teh same problem or an explanationor better even a fix ?
    I am using a WD1200JB.
    :(

    Hi,
Don't know if our issues have anything in common, but me and a few others have experienced lots of cold boot crashes with Win2K and WinXP. These issues disappear when the PC has "warmed up". Boards KT4 Ultra and KT4V.
In my case for example, W2K might crash on cold boot reporting random errors, but this never happens when the PC has warmed up.
All my components have been checked and bios settings set to default so it has to be an issue with the board or bios code or something. I have also reinstalled the OS many times and tried different IDE cables, power supplies - you name it. Issues remain (and got worse with the new 1.25 beta bios, so I flashed back to v1.10).
But - check your cables and connections. Try to replace the IDE cable and also try the suggested jumper change. Hopefully your issue is just a loose connection or starts working with a different jumper setup.
As a long shot bug check - try to drop your cpu FSB down to 128 MHz or even all the way to 100 MHz (if running at 133 MHz) and check whether this takes the issue away.
    Regards,
    Tom

  • Z77GD-80 Boot and RAM Problems ( caused by ME Flash Fail )

Hi everyone , i recentlty updated my MB to Bios Version 1.2 and noticed that an option had been added => update bios and ME
tried that option , chosen the same bios file ( 1.2 ) , a warning popup came up that mentioned to not unplug or shutdown the system , the flashing went well until it decided to flash the "ME".
the device rebooted after the the flashing reached 100% ( i think that was when the BIOS flash ended )  ,another flashing started after the Reboot but it did not complete and rebooted @ 60%( ME flash ? )  ! since then i cannot boot using that Bios , the debugger keeps showing error 15 and 19 , going from one to another rapidly .
tried to boot using the second bios ( bios switch ) it did boot fine , but only detects half of my RAM ( 8 G ) tried each MB DIMM and Module separately and  all worked fine !
tried to flash the first bios via booting from the second but that didn't work from bios ( strange thing was that when i saved the second bios in USB it was only 6Mb and would not be detected to flash , but my downloaded bios are 8Mb and were available to chose for update )
1-if i try to only flash the bios it restart @ 100 % but then the same debugger error appears after reboot
2-if i try the BIOS and ME , same thing happens it restart @ 60% and the debugger error appears
tried AMI bios flasher for windows , and it did flash the BIOS just fine but when it tries the ME , it keeps erroring that this Bios doesn't support this function
so i had 2 question in mind
1- How can i flash the ME to solve my problems ?
2- why is half of my ram not detected in the second Bios ?
    any help would be appreciated
    thansk

    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
Use the forum flash tool to prepare a usb stick for flashing. Download the attached bios to your desktop and use option 1 of the tool, point the tool at the entire archive. After the flash (It will flash the me as well) do a full cmos clear with the cord removed.
Then re-install the ME drivers inside windows.
In regards to the non working bios, first try a full cmos clear, if that fails:

  • Imac G4 20 inch 512 mb ram 1.25 ghz boot problem

i have a boot problem with my imac when i start it up it keeps on loading forever i have made a video so you can see the problem any suggestions on what the problem could be? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh2jhTf0MHI

Hello, and welcome to Apple Support Discussions!
    While I did look at the video you posted, nothing was clearly evident in there;
so you may have to see if it is possible to start the computer from an install
disc, with C key held down, and use Disk Utility in the Installer's menu.
You may be able to see if you can 'verify' the hard disk drive, and if so, it
may be possible to 'repair' the Macintosh HDD. Some kinds of errors may
not be repairable by Disk Utility's tool options; but you could secure erase
the entire hard disk drive, and reformat it, then install a new system if that
may be the only way to make the computer work again.
Though the internal hard disk drive, or other hardware may be behind the
failure to get past the gray start screen with busy wheel, etc.
You may be able to try & see if the computer could start up in SafeBoot
mode, this is usually achieved on a startup by holding the Shift key down
and keeping it held down until you see there is a hint that the OS may work
but I usually suggest to keep the Shift key held down until you see the Login
screen (in Tiger) or a preliminary window appears in Panther, with SafeBoot
in a dialog box. In SafeBoot you can read system Console Logs, to try and
detect a hint of what isn't working, in those reports.
In SafeBoot, if the computer gets that far, it would be running in a reduced
version of OS X and you could also check the computer to see if the
hard disk drive shows up as Verified or passes SMART, etc. You can also
run Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions' in Safeboot. Generally, after any
use of SafeBoot, you'd restart the computer; or try to.
The computer probably could use more than 512MB of RAM; the total it
can use, is 2048MB or two 1GB chips; each is a different style chip. The
lower more easily accessed RAM slot can use on 200-pin PC2700/DDR333
laptop chip similar to that which the 'mid-2005' iBook G4 uses, by specs.
There is a chance the data on the hard disk drive may be corrupted enough
to not get past the startup point; if you can't get a rise out of the computer
with Disk Utility or SafeBoot, or other localized means, you may have to get
and try to use a version of Disk Warrior on bootable CD; one most likely to
be similar to whatever OS X version is running in the computer.
Also, the hard disk drive may be worn out or have a defect; so due to age
and wear, that may be on its way out. There are several reasons why the
computer may get stuck at that stage of startup. There also are articles you
can find in a search, by using words such as ' Mac OS X gray screen start'
    and other different ones, provide other responses. Some can be helpful;
in that owners with similar issues have posted online dozens of times, and
some of them get similar replies. You can test a validity of any consensus.
Without knowing more about the status of the computer, its hardware or
software; its history and use, etc; a reply can only focus on a few items.
