Boot problem under Leopard

Sometimes my Mac Pro wrongly boots on Windows XP (on a separate 250 Go HD) and not on my favourite preselected Leopard HD.
When I check the boot disk in Leopard properties, it appears that the Mac OS 10.5.1 disk is deselected (though I had selected it previously and securely locked its access). So, I have to reselect it again in Leopard and in XP.
Is that a Leopard bug? I notice that it happens more frequently if I plug my Logitech extreme joystick or when I have a DVD (software) within the DVD drive.
If someone knows how to get rid of this bug, please let me know. Thanks!
Regards,
Butchan (Tokyo)

Plugging things in updates nvram device tree. Or that Logitech device.
XP may be set to assume that a DVDs presence means boot from alternate media?

  • USB audio problems under Leopard

I was a long time upgrading to Leopard, but since I have done so I've had nothing but problems with audio. I have an Event EZBus connected via USB and it worked fine under all the operating systems up till now.
It seems to work fine initially in any program, whether I'm streaming audio from the internet, or using an audio program like Digital Performer. But after varying amounts of usage of audio, it begins to stutter, with longer intervals at first, broken by brief soft static sounds, then the stuttering intervals get shorter and shorter each time I play something, until it's more stutter than audio.
Quitting and restarting whatever application I'm using often cures the problem temporarily, but then it just starts again and gets worse and worse until I quit and restart again.
I've tried every kind of troubleshooting I know of and am at my wit's end. Did Apple make some major change to Core Audio that now has rendered my audio interface obsolete, or does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and what can be done about it?
    Thanks.

Apparently there were drivers for Jaguar and Panther. However, check out this web page and see if it helps. http://www.jackosx.com/download.html

  • Boot problem - Snow Leopard on USB flash drive

Built a fresh install of 10.6 on a USB flash drive.  The steps I took to do this were:
Installing from 10.6.3 install disc onto an external firewire drive with minimal install option.  Drive is hooked into a Mac Pro station
Booted to external drive, installed updates to get to 10.6.8.
Carbon Copy Cloaner the external firewire OS to a 32gb Patriot USB drive
Removed the external drive, then forced the station to boot to the USB drive
The behavior I get is a startup chime, then the grey Apple logo, but NO spinning gear.  No other types of signs or symbols come up for roughly 5 minutes. The system then reboots itself and chimes.  Then repeat until I hard shutdown and make it boot back to the Mac Pro's internal HDD.
I also tried installing the OS disc directly to the flash drive ( after formatting it ) but it does the same thing.  Chime - logo - no gears - reboot.
The drive itself works as I've used it for other purposes and I can see the files on there.  The access light is blinking so it appears to be trying to communicate with the computer.
Did I miss a step somewhere?

I was able to burn DL DVD's with 10.4.11, which is what shipped with my MBP when I purchased it. I haven't had need to burn a another DL DVD until now, approx 4 months later.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions on this? At this point I'm pondering waiting to see if 10.5.2 resolves the issue. If not, I suppose a trip to the Genius Bar is in order.

  • RosettaStone Product Activiation Problem under Leopard

Hi - After the installation of latest RosettaStone language software you have to enter its activation id key. after transmitting - the program hangs and never recovers again. running on mac os 10.5.1 and RosettaStone v3.0.42A / ITA1 v7.1. Thanks

Problem solved. Activation was now possible. Guess RosettaStone had a problem with their activation server.

  • Parallels under leopard

I sent a question to parallels directly but I thought I would ask here as well.
Are people seeing a problem under leopard where windows update constantly hangs under parallels?
    It worked flawlessly under tiger.
I installed the latest build of parallels and I am trying to reinstall windows.

It is a networking problem. Reinstalling Windows is unlikely to fix it. Windows Update is very flaky. I had the same problem under Tiger. I'm not surprised that something about Leopard causes it to fail on your system. It works fine on mine, but if it dies tomorrow when I switch from DSL to Cable, I wouldn't be at all surprised.
Try turning off your firewall entirely. That might help - might not.

  • Problems with ViaVoice under Leopard, especially key mapping problems

ViaVoice's behavior has changed considerably under Leopard. First I will discuss the key mapping problem, since I'm eagerly looking for an answer to this problem. At the end of this post, I will voice some of the other problems I've experienced for those who may be interested. The key mapping problem may be specific to the fact that I use a foreign keyboard with a US version of ViaVoice.
    INTRO:
I have used ViaVoice on my Mac for years, more or less without problems (ViaVoice's bugginess is notorious).
Those who know ViaVoice will know that one has two general options for dictation. One can dictate into ViaVoice's so-called SpeakPad, which allows special formatting, editing and dictation error correction within the dictated text, or one can dictate into "external" software such as Microsoft Word, in which case ViaVoice just sends a string of characters to that software. SpeakPad appears to make strong use of the operating system's built-in functionality for character formatting, document formatting, etc.
    *MY PROBLEM*
I have a German keyboard on my PowerBook, yet dictate in US English. When I dictated into SpeakPad under Tiger, all characters appeared correctly. However, when I dictated into Microsoft Word using Tiger, I had to switch the keyboard mapping from German to US to get all characters (that means including the characters that are located at different positions on a German keyboard than they are on a US keyboard such as y, z, apostrophes and parentheses) to appear correctly.
Under Leopard, things have changed. Now it doesn't matter whether I dictate into SpeakPad or Word; the results are the same and many characters do not appear correctly.
If set to a German keyboard, y and z appear as expected. To name a few irregularities:
    "(" appears as ")"
    ")" appears as "="
    apostrophes appear as "#" and
    ";" appears as ","
If set to a US keyboard, y and z are interchanged. "(" and ")" appear as expected. Apostrophes appear as "\" and ";" appears as ","
By comparison, if typed (as opposed to dictated, as in the examples above) "correctly" (i.e. based on the letters printed on the keyboard) on a German keyboard set to imitate a US keyboard:
    y and z are interchanged
    apostrophes appear as "|"
    "(" appears as "*"
    ")" appears as "(" and
";" appears as the symbol for "less than"
Since I don't have a US keyboard, I can't say how it would behave if set to imitate a German keyboard, i.e. if there's a correlation to the results I get when I dictate.
Since I was previously able to dictate correctly into SpeakPad by setting the keyboard to "German" and into Word by setting the keyboard to "US," I presume that this is a problem in Leopard, not ViaVoice.
*OTHER PROBLEMS WITH VIAVOICE UNDER LEOPARD*
In addition to the aforementioned key mapping problems (that may be specific to those of us with foreign keyboards), ViaVoice appears to have lost considerable functionality in Leopard. I cannot access SpeakPad's Preferences and the correction window. Moreover, the traffic-light like window buttons have disappeared from the VoiceCenter (although they work if you click where they should be). SetupAssistent appears to function.
I've written to Nuance about these problems, but have little hope that they will invest the time in producing a patch since they haven't released any updates since 2003.

    Thrums1,
I've never had to "register" ViaVoice after updating the system. I thus suspect you haven't fully followed my above, three-step advice (particularly step 3).
    1) Reinstall ViaVoice from CD.
    2) Update to the latest version (using the patch downloadable from Nuance's website).
    3) Replace the “temp” and “users” folders (in the "ViaVoice" folder at the upper level of your home directory) by a previous copy thereof. When I say previous copy, I mean a copy from when ViaVoice was still working properly, e.g. a copy from when it was running under Tiger.
As I said, I've gotten ViaVoice to survive several system updates by following the above steps. To my knowledge, the last step is critical since it saves you from having to reconfigure ViaVoice under the new operating system (in this case Leopard). I suspect that ViaVoice is crashing on your system because it's trying to start some module of the SetUpAssistant that is incompatible with Leopard (as many are). If you instead use old copies of the "temp" and "users" folders (from the previous system), then ViaVoice doesn't have to go through the initial "registration" process; ViaVoice doesn't need the SetUpAssistant; and all is (more or less) fine.
    Good luck!
BTW, to my knowledge, Dictate only runs on Intel Macs. It thus won't run on a G4 iBook, just as it won't run on my PowerBook G4.

  • Any luck with Aperture under Leopard problems. Here's the problem I'm havin

So, I can tell you that Apple knows of this problem. Two days ago I begun a thread that was a "roll call" for all those having problems with this app under Leopard.
Apple sent me a custom email back saying they had to remove the thread because it would be better to have seperate indiv's with their specific problems.
Ok, I buy that. But I know they are well aware of this problem. Not one mention of what they are trying to do to fix this. I have about 95 pct of my work in Aperture library and the Aperture vault. I will not use the other product from Adobe because, I paid for Aperture, I paid for Leopard and I really don't see why I have to purchase another product to do the work I've already paid for.
Anywho, my problem is still the crashing of Aperture not only when exporting but just randomly at anytime. I've kept Aperture closed not because it just is not worth my time to open the app at all. What a shame. I'm such a huge Apple advocate but now......
Why not at least a open letter from the Sr. Project Manager Joe Schoor? Anthing?
Has anyone found a sure fire fix for these issues? Thus far, I've tried to rebuild the Library, Re-install 1.5 and then upgrade online to 1.5.6 etc....

    hi, tom
what are you running Aperture on?
when you reinstalled Aperture did you delete the Aperture folder in the applications folder and also the Aperture preferences, presets, caches files tucked away in the Home>Library and OSX>Library? if an application is misbehaving and you reinstall it but not remove all of it's files it may continue to misbehave.
I'm not an advocate of deleting Preference files and reinstalling but I might consider deleting the following files if I were in your shoes:
    1. User\Library\Preferences\com.apple.Aperture.plist
    2. Home>Library>Caches>Aperture - (Delete entire folder)
    Maybe even the following:
    3. Home>Library>Application Support>Aperture - (Delete entire folder. This will get rid of your presets and keywords)
    4. Main Hard Drive>Library>Application Support>ProApps>Aperture System ID - (this will delete your serial number and you'll have to re-enter it).)
if any of the above files were corrupt the problem will be solved on start up or reinstall.

  • Unable to save HP printer presets under Leopard

I frequently print a colored first page from the manual paper tray and the rest of the document from another tray. Presets previously saved, work flawlessly under Tiger. I am not able to save presets under Leopard - all attempts revert to default settings. Maddening because we do numerous different print jobs - some requiring staples and collating, some with a color first page, some a mix of both. One of a kind -- no problem -- print 50 and you have to set the preset for each copy. AARG!! Solution -- unacceptable!! Boot under Tiger.

This is a known problem and will most likely require an update form Apple:

  • Problems after Leopard upgrade with ATI 9800 Pro 256MB

I don't know if this is related.. but I've been battling multiple problems ever since I upgraded my G5 to Leopard a week ago. Everything was perfect under Tiger.
The problem that only occurred directly after upgrading to Leopard... is that my graphics now get corrupted and garbled. I've got two video cards running two LCD monitors. The card giving me problems is the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (256MB). What happens is.. first all the window shadows and top menu bar start getting checkerboard patterns.. then the whole screen starts getting variants of different colors and checkerboard patterns. After awhile and refreshing the screen a few times... the problem goes away for a bit. Then comes back.
Again, this card and my entire system and drives were working fine under Tiger. Now, I don't know if I have a bad card? Is there something wrong with Leopard on my G5 2Ghz DP? Did my Maxtor 750GB triple interface drive just go bad with the upgrade?
I don't know where else to look, I'm guessing the "geniuses" at the Apple store won't help me since this machine is out of warranty. Any help would be HUGELY appreciated. I've been battling all these problems ever since I started the Leopard upgrade 4 days ago and have not got much sleep.

I've already reset PRAM with the option, command,P,R keys... letting it chime a couple times... and have already done this many times over the last few days. Doesn't seem to help. I don't know how to reset NVRAM via open firmware and the instructions are vague. But, supposedly a PRAM reset is all you have to do.
If it is a heat problem, why would it only have presented itself directly after a Leopard upgrade? It also does it when I boot off the Leopard disk. Actually does it worse. I'd just get a new card if I wasn't suspicious about the Leopard upgrade... not convinced it's a hardware problem yet. Though the card is mounted on the bottom slot above the CPUs. It has a fan on top that appears to be working but it doesn't look like much clearance between the card and the top of the CPUs case.
I could move it up a slot to give it more air... but it still doesn't explain why until last Monday, it worked fine under Tiger.

  • IMac G4 Booting Problem

After 6 years of trouble-free service, my iMac (17" G4, 1.25 Ghz) won't boot past the gray screen with the apple and the spinning ball. It was running on 10.5.8. I've tried everything I could find in the Apple troubleshooting articles, including resetting the PRAM and PMU and booting in safe mode. I was able to access the hard drive from my MacBook Pro via target disk mode. I ran the disc utility program, and the hard drive is apparently in working order. I would like to try to boot from the Leopard disk or the original Panther disk, but I can't get the disc tray to open. When I try to boot with "c" (or shift) held down, I just get a loud beep before the computer proceeds to the gray screen and spinning wheel, where it remains indefinitely. What does this mean? What else can I try?

To get the tray to open, try holding down the mouse button at initial startup.
If you have not already, you can try starting up with the Option key held down. This will give you Startup Manager. If the internal drive volume is listed as a valid choice, select it and try to continue. See if that method works any better.
If you are not able to start up that way or in Safe Mode, it sounds like a key system component became corrupted. Fortunately, it also seems like the drive is still accessible, so it is probably not a hardware problem. I would use FireWire target disk mode as you have already, and back up your personal user data. Then, startup from your Leopard installation disc, run Disk Utility from Installer's Utilities menu. In Disk Utility, select the internal drive in the sidebar (not the volume indented under the drive). Go to the Erase tab and erase (reformat) the internal drive; name the volume +Macintosh HD+ (if you want to use the standard name) and set the format to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Obviously, this will erase the volume.
After the erase completes (it should take less than one minute), quit Disk Utility to go back to Installer. Run a standard installation onto the internal drive.
NOTE: You said you had Leopard on it, so if you were using Time Machine, you can use the utility to restore the complete system from your Time Machine backup archive. Then, you will be back in business to within one hour of the failure time. Please post back if you need more details on how to do this with Time Machine.

  • DVDSP run under Leopard?

    Hi!
I've been combing eBay for a copy of FCS or FCS2 and been researching how DVDSP 3 or 4 runs under Leopard before I purchase.  Unfortunately I see a lot of folks that have had issues running DVDSP 3 or 4 (FCS or FCS 2) under Leopard.
Essentially, I am currently running 10.5.8 on a G5 1.8 DP and I am looking for a version of DVDSP that will run under this so I don't have to use a dual boot system just to burn DVDs.  Is there a version of DVDSP that will run under this configuration, or do I have to buy an Intel Mac?
Additionally, if I do buy an Intel Mac, can I get  away with a MacBook to run DVDSP and FCP and save the heavy lifting of Motion and/or Color for a desktop?
    Thanks!

I don't have any significant experience with Leopard other than on a Mac Pro, but I've had full FCS2 installs running on 2.5GHz G5 dualies (Tiger) since it was released and have both FCS2 and FCS3 running on Snow Leopard flawlessly.
Apple says you need an Intel processor to run FCS3, but the Get Info for FCP7 says the code is universal and therefore it may run on a G5. Irrespective of that, DVDSP4 should run fine on your G5.
As for what you can "get away with" on a MacBook, you may find that the lack of firewire on recent MacBooks a problem. Additionally, I'm not sure about the video support. The MacBook Pro is a better choice, but more expensive. You may want to look into a used Mac Pro as an alternative.

  • Permission Problems with Leopard & Time Machine are ridiculous!

I just had a hard drive die in a MacBook. I installed a new drive and restored from TM.
Only to find out I have absolutely no ownership to anything in my home directory.
System & Admin -r/w, everyone r --- no where is my id mentioned as having ANY r/w access.
Leopard has been a disaster on 2 out of 3 Macs I've installed it on.
If I wanted this kind of crap I'd use Windows full time.

You'll need to reset permissions on your home directory. Follow these steps:
    1) Boot from your Leopard install CD/DVD (insert it, shut down, start while holding "C")
    2) Choose your language.
    3) When the menubar appears, select Utilities>Reset Password.
    4) In the window that appears, select your boot volume (by default, "Macintosh HD") from the list at the top.
    5) In the popup menu below the volume list, select an affected user. (One that you used "Apply to enclosed items" on).
    6) Click the "Reset" button at the bottom of the window. This will reset the permissions (and ACLs) back to their default settings.
    7) Repeat Steps 5 & 6 for every user on your machine who has this problem (except "System Administrator (Root)").
There is one bug in this process, so you need to take some additional steps to get permissions back to how they should be.
    8) Log in to an account you reset the permissions for.
    9) Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
    10) Copy the blue text in, and press "return". chgrp -R `id -gn` ~
    11) You won't see anything happen, but you can check that it worked by selecting your home folder, and clicking File>Get Info. You will see either "unknown" or "staff" under "Sharing and Permissions", depending on how you installed Leopard. Either one is fine.
    12) Repeat the steps 8-11 for every account that you reset permissions for on your machine. (Remember, NOT "System Administrator (Root)").
    Good luck!

  • Permission Repair takes AGES under Leopard

I have noticed that under Leopard permission repair can take over 20 minutes to complete. On the same machine using Tiger it was only a matter of 2 minutes (at most). Does anyone have an explanation, fix or idea that might point me in the right direction? It's not as if the machine that I'm using is underpowered and the problem doesn't appear to be connected with the size of the machine anyway; my MacBook Pro takes less time (about 4 minutes) than my 3.0 GHz Xeon Quad for permission repair of the system disk.....
    Thanks for your help!

Repairing permissions w/Leopard takes anywhere from 10-40 minutes, depending on what's installed and what's contained in /Library/Receipts/bom/. The repair permissions operation has changed in Leopard. The stalled progress bar is an unresolved bug (they haven't figured out how to make it work whilst it's checking or rebuilding the a.receiptdb, in /Library/Receipts/db/. To see what's really going on, open that folder in a Finder window, select list view, launch Disk Utility, select your boot volume, and click on repair permissions. Watch the Finder window flash files that are being read and checked against the current a.receiptdb file. That's what's taking all the time and freezing the progress bar. Once that's finished, the progress bar starts moving and the permissions are being checked and repaired. Also note, that you won't get any *they were repaired* message back for any that are noted to be incorrect.
Want more information? Then, search these forums for *repairing permissions* or permissions.

  • ISync problems after Leopard upgrade...please help

I recently upgraded to Leopard. It worked fine on my laptop, but something went wrong with my mac mini. The only way it would install is with a complete reformatting...had everything backed up, so I figured why not. Here is my mess.
    1. In iSync, my old Tiger mac mini is still registered and th e Leopard one is not syncing with that registration...it creates its own. Should I just delete both, reset the iSync with my laptop as the model and go from there?
    2. iweb does not have my old web sites in it. They are in my iDrive, but i don't know how to get them back on iWeb. I created them on the mac mini, so would unregistering it make me loose them? Is there a way that I can get them on the laptop's iWeb?
    3. My mail and safari fail to launch windows.....If I open a new window, I can see it listed, but I can't see it. What is up with this?
    Can someone help?
