Boot Screen Drive Icon on FAT formatted XP partition

+I have been over many guides and forums for this+, and all I can find is information on changing the icon for an NTFS partition.
I have a FAT formatted Windows partition and want to change the icon for the *BOOT SCREEN*.
I am not interested in installing the rEFIt program.
If there is no way that this can be done, please let me know.

From my limited investigations, it appears that the startup manager database isn't updated properly, so the Leopard volume doesn't pop up to the top. Once moved and Startup Disk shows the Leopard volume, a restart keeps it in the appropriate place.

You can not create another partition on a drive containing a Boot Camp partition. You now need to erase then format your drive. Reinstall OSX then reuse Boot Camp Assistant to create a new Boot Camp partition. Reinstall Windows. Ensure you copy off all your data before erasing and formatting the drive.

  • Problems formatting the partition in Windows XP

I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro (SP2, OEM version) through bootcamp. I partition the hard drive (115gb) using the assistant and then start the installation. I get the screen that asks me to select the correct partition and I choose "C: Partition 3 <BOOTCAMP> [FAT32]". However, according to the bootcamp installation guide, I should then see a screen that allows me to format the partition for Windows XP where I can select "NTFS (Quick)". The problem is, I'm not getting this screen. After I choose "C: Partition 3..." it jumps straight into the install and I never have the opportunity to format the partition. Any ideas on whats going wrong?

  • How do I change the desktop icon for an MS-Dos Fat formatted flash drive in Lion?

I have a bunch of flash drives I need to format for work, and we want to put our company logo as the icon for each drive.  We wanted to format them as MS-Dos Fat so that they'll be readable and writeable on both Mac and Windows computers.  But when I format them that way and change the icon, it displays as a generic preview JPEG image instead of the real image or even the default hard drive icon.
I managed to fix it so the icon will display properly in Snow Leopard, but in Lion the drive still mounts with the generic Preview thumbnail.
Is there any way I can easily format a flash drive so that a) it will be readable and writeable on Windows and OSX machines and b) have the icon for the drive appear correctly on Lion, Snow Leopard, and windows machines?
    Thanks!

Command- i will open the info pane of your icon.
Try opening and "selecting all" ⌘-A (of your preferred image,) then copy and paste your preferred image on the high-lighted icon in the upper left.

  • Weird! RAID icons still in the boot screen after restored them back to norm

I created a software RAID 0 with two 250GB hard disks by using Disk Utility. Installed OSX on them. And I restored them to two separated disks yesterday, Installed OSX on one of them, formated another one for media storage. But weird thing is when I press "alt"key into boot screen, they are still there! Now I have five boot icons- two RAID disks, one OSX, one backup OSX and one for windows. What is wrong with that?? Anyone have the same problem? PLZ help!!!

Thanks BUT problem solved! I reformated the disks using "zero-out" option in Disk Utility and guess what? The stupid icons disappeared!:D "zero-out" formating will take longer than normal formating, about 40 minutes for a 250GB HD.

  • FedEx/Kinkos and StaplesPrint Can't Read MS-DOS (FAT) Formatted Thumb Drive

Lately, when I take a thumb drive that I've formatted using Disk Utility to MS-DOS (FAT), the computers at FedEx and Staples can't mount them. I've tried multiple thumb drives and multiple stores--same thing, they won't mount.
Shouldn't a MS-DOS (FAT) formatted thumb drive work? Or, an I missing something.

    Hi,
thank you for the valuable informations about the MacDrive on these stations.
But are you sure about the APT partition scheme ?
Shouldn't it be GPT (GUID Partition Table) in conjunction with Mac OS Extended file system ?
Never used such stations, only trying to avoid confusion.
Stefan, you're incredibly helpful and don't need to worry in the least about me taking your posts the wrong way.
The combo of APT (Apple Partition Table) and HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) is the most compatible across platforms. GPT doesn't offer any advantages to a USB flash drive unless you are intending to use it as boot drive on an Intel-based Mac. GPT also limits the backwards compatibility (possibly not an issue) with older versions of the Mac OS.

  • Macbook adapter sparked, now I can't boot up "no" icon/gray screen

Hi all! I didn't know how to describe the icon, which is why I couldn't find it in search... but it's the circle with a slash thru it like "no" smoking etc...
my mag/plug sparked yesterday, now it' charging "ok" but those little prongs definitely are not as springy as they should be... I have read kb and discussion on cleaning the plug, and that's fine... but before I go replace the entire plug (old one's used to be ~$70) I need to know if I've "fried" (I hate to use that word ) my mac/logic board/????
I ran disk repair from the install disks and it's reports no problem. I have reset pram and smu per kb articals but still get only gray screen.
in summary... power on/after 1-2min of gray screen/apple icon and spinning wheel, (longer than usual) the gray screen only shows that "no" icon in place of the apple, and the spinning wheel just continues... I hear no noise from the hd at that point. Able to start up to install disc pressing "c" but no start up to disk.
Thanks in advance for any advice... sadly this macbook is only 20 months old, I now have 3 mac/ibooks which broke down just out of warranty.
    HELP!

You say you updated the flash storage.  I'm guessing you just recently had it replaced by an Authorized Apple Service Center, perhaps as part of the replacement program.
If that's true, take it back to the Authorized Apple Service Center and have them fix it so the new flash drive boots for you.  They should have done that originally.

  • "Format USB drive to single FAT partition"

I'm trying to use Boot Camp to install Windows 8 on my Macbook Pro, but when I was going to save the Windows support software to my external hard drive I'm told to "format the USB drive to single FAT partition."  I thought I had done that, but after I used the same hard drive to back up my computer, it seems that it went back to its original format.  Does the hard drive have to be empty to download the support software, or did something else go wrong?

try formatting with ExFat, it'll detect immediately.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Any way to back up FAT formatted external hard drive to Time Machine?

I'm a photographer, and right now my library of photos is a complete mess. I have about 20 GB of photos on one external hard drive and about 30 GB on my Mac's built in hard drive. I recently purchased a new external hard drive to use with Time Machine. I was under the impression that I could back up everything on my first external hard drive to my new external hard drive. Little did I know, because my first external hard drive is FAT formatted, I cannot back it up to the Time Machine hard drive.
So my main question is this: is there any way to back up this FAT hard drive to my Time Machine hard drive? If I can't use Time Machine, do you have any other recommendations for backing up my entire photo library?
    Thank you for your help!

A TM backup drive should be used just for TM backups. Buy another drive to use for your photo library. You can then use other backup utilities to keep it current such as:

  • FAT formatted external hard drive is not 'readable by this computer'

    Hello support community
The problem: when I insert my 'FAT' formatted external hard drive (Samsung M3) into my mac book pro it comes up with the error message that says "the inserted disk is not readable by this computer" and I therefore cannot access the files.
    The story (potential further details):
    1. I had a problem with my mac where it took hours to load each time I turned it on, would only work when power was plugged in etc. so I had to reformat my mac hard drive (when I tried to veriify it said repair, that wouldn't work). So i'm starting with a recently reformatted, clean mac.
    2. Before doing this I reformatted my external hard drive (whilst on windows machine) to FAT32 (so I can use on both windows and mac) so that I could back up my files.
    3. I then transferred files from mac onto external hard drive and then also put them on a windows machine.
    4. After reformatting mac hard drive when I then tried to transfer files back onto the mac I get the 'not readable' error.
    The technical details:
Thank you very much indeed anyone who can help or can try and help
    Cheers
    Andy

Erase the drive and reformat using your Mac (Disk Utility)

Restart your MBP holding the trackpad down and hopefully the disk will be ejected.  Then try to return it and get a refund or put it in the trash.  There is nothing that software does for your MBP that you cannot do yourself or with free software.
If can get your MBP started, delete all traces of the offending software.  Worst case is that you may have to erase the HDD and reload the OS and your user data.  I trust that you have a backup (minus MacTuneUp).
Courcoul has given you his opinion in a very succinct manner, and as you might surmise, I agree with him.
    Ciao.

  • How to position boot drive icon to top right on clone

Under 10.4 my boot drive icon always appeared at the top right. This is particularly useful when I boot from a clone, so that I do not carelessly do something believing that I have booted from my main drive. Under Leopard, however, the boot drive icon does NOT appear in the upper right when I boot from my clones. Rather, the icon of the main drive stays there. Any way to restore this Tiger capability? I know that I can manually place the icon on each clone, but that defeats the purpose, since it reverts with each new cloning. Thanks!

I don't have two Leopard drives at the moment, though I have Leopard installed on the main partition of my internal hard drive, with Tiger installed on a smaller partition. Currently, when running Leopard, the Leopard drive is in the upper right, with the Tiger "drive" below it. If I manually move these icons so the Tiger "drive" is in the upper right, and if I then right-click the desktop and select Arrange By ->Kind, the icons revert to the Leopard drive being in the upper right. Would arranging your desktop icons by "Kind" give you what you are looking for?
