Boot screen error

Just installed some software after the assistant prompted me. Machine wouldn't get past the boot screen showing first the apple then showing this:
[img]http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4047/4191378577d8a957076ao.jpg[/img]
I did a hard shut down and gave it another shot. This time around I am letting it think it through for a bit before I start up from disk.
Any thoughts on what my problem might be and the best route to take in order to fix this?

Hi Felix. No, it won't necessarily be any faster (Well, faster than reinstalling the OS) - however, you might have noticed that when you launched Disk Utility on the Mac that, while you could Repair Disk Permission, you could not perform a Repair Disk - it was grayed out. DU can't repair a disk that the OS has been booted from.
Seeing as you have already re-installed the OS, repairing the Macs' HD is not necessary. But for future reference...
a. Insert the Mac OS X DVD.
b. Reboot the Mac and hold down the C key as soon as you hear the startup chime.
c. The Mac should boot from the DVD.
d. When you reach the Welcome to Mac OS X splash screen, go up to the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility.
e. Highlight your Macs' HD on the left and then click Repair Disk (Note: NOT Repair Disk Permissions)
f. When it completes quit DU and then quit the Installer.
g. The Mac will reboot and bring you back to the login screen.
Cheers!

  • Blue Screen error using Boot Camp when installing XP on the MacBook Pro

I have been trying to install Windows XP Professional (with SP2) on my MacBook and I keep encountering blue screen errors during the install. I successfully create the Windows partition with Boot Camp (v2.0) and then Windows install begins. However, during the setup process it hangs and then eventually throws an error showing a blue screen. There has been a different error each time I've tried to install. I've booted in OSX and then deleted the Windows partition through Boot Camp and then attempted the process from the beginning five separate times and each time I get an error during the initial install phase.
Its not a matter of the installation CD because i borrowed 3 differnt copies from some friends and i still have the same issues.
Once, I managed to actually start windows XP however it was full of errors probably as parts of it weren't properly installed due to the the blue screens that made me reboot several times.
Am I the only one having this problem??
Is this a matter of the hardware? Can you think of any possible solution?
(I used NTFS did everything propperly I'm 100% sure)(I tried FAT as well)(still nothing)
    PLEASE HELP

Can you read and write from your optical drive? I would have it checked by burning something to it and seeing if it can be read.
I have noted a link, with some information that may be helpful, for you to check out.

I would repair permissions before your next attempt too.
If this fails, I would contact Apple.

  • Window setup option on the boot menu after fixing Blue Screen Errors

Hello Everyone, this is my firs t request.
I spent two days fixing the Blue Screen Errors (BSoD) on my computer but one thing keeps bothering me is that everytime I start or reboot my computer, it gives me TWO OPTIONS; 1. windows xp home edition 2.windows setup (default). I want to disable the second option. I had attempted to re-install windows but later changed my mind, and found an alternative to fix the Blue Screen Errors. I believe the reason Blue Screen Errors (BSoD) showed up was that I had created a new user profile and copied over old user profile files so improperly that it duplicated drivers, and gave me a list of STOP errors with blue screens for both new and old users.
    The bootini file currently shows:
    [Boot Loader]
    Timeout=5
    Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
    [Operating Systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
Does anyone know what to edit for the bootini file so that I don't get two options at the startup??? My system details are:
    IdeaPad, S10-4231
    Windows XP Home Edition SP3
    4-year old
    Thanks,
    Lenovo User

    Hi
    Welcome To Lenovo Community
As per the Default Sample of Boot.ini the default value after timeout section needs to be modified
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
Before making any changes please save a copy of Boot.ini
Save a Backup Copy of Boot.ini
    <script type="text/javascript">//
    loadTOCNode(2, 'summary');
    // </script>
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    -or-
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Startup, click Edit. This opens the file in Notepad ready for editing.
In Notepad, click File on the Menu bar, and then click Save As.
Right click in an empty area of the Save As dialog box, point to New in the context menu, and then click Folder.
Type a name for the new folder, for example temp, and then press the ENTER key to create the folder named temp.
Double-click the new folder named temp, and then click the Save button to save a backup copy of the Boot.ini file.
     Please try modifying the following
     Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
     to
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    Hope This Helps

  • Blue screen error message on Satellite Pro A10

    Hi,
I'm trying to help my inlaws with their Satellite Pro SPA10. I had set this up for them a few months ago and it was running really well.
Now it restarts about two seconds past the "use last good configuration" etc. screen, gets to this screen again then restarts immediately ad infinitum, never pausing on the error mesage for long enough to see what it says.
I managed to get it to boot from the windows XP home disc and got as far as the repair or continue with installation screen. When I asked the computer to do either it crashes to blue screen almost immediately. The error message is
    *** STOP: 0x000000c5 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x8082B98B)
This is beyond my level of expertise, can anyone help?
    Thanks

Hi Mike thank you for replying,
I am not able to start the computer in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last good known configuration etc, Each time it quickly blue screens and restarts about two secs into the process.
I was unable to try a clean OS install from the disk as it gave the blue screen error shown in the original post. The same thing happened when I tried to use the repair option on the XP home disc. So i can't get into the computer at all to start diagnosing the fault, the only clue I have is the error message, and after searching the internet I haven't found much enlightenment from that yet.
If you can help me out or suggest where to search it would be much appreciated.
    Thx

  • Macbook won't go past boot screen-want to back up files before reinstalling

    Hi everyone,
My Macbook (Aluminum Unibody-before they labeled it "the pro") started slowing down when I installed snow leopard recently. It was jamming up a lot and I would have to restart often. On my most recent lock up, I restarted and it never went past the apple boot screen. I booted from the system DVD and ran disk utility, to no avail. There were all sorts of errors. Brought the computer into best buy and they tested the health of my hard drive-it is in perfect condition. THey suggested I just reinstall the OS and everything on my computer would be saved. I went to do this and received this error "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume without changing your installation settings. Click Options to change the settings. The contents of this volume cannot be changed"
When I click options, I receive this:
"The destination disk must be erased for installation.
The detination volume will be completely erased and a new compy of Mac OS X will be installed on the volume. All your data will be lost" Then gives me these options "Format as: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled).
You gotta talk to me like I'm someone with no experience with this sort of thing. Because.. I'm not experienced with these issues. I did all the startups that are suggested... the fsck (or whatever) thing (doesn't fix anything), the single-user start up, start up in safe mode (doesn't work).
Now, I can boot up with my system disk and reach the disk utlity. There is an option there to "restore" by dragging the Mac HD to the top field and the external hard drive to the bottom field. It does say it will write over any other files, however.
Here's my issue-first, I want to make sure that it will really make a full copy of everything, just as Time Machine does. The only hard drive I have that is WORKING with this, is the one that my time machine backups are on. I'm assuming all of my backups (there are many), will be erased and written over. Is this so? And will backing up by this method, really work to where I will be able to access all my files? Will I be able to restore from this backup after the OS is reinstalled? I hadn't backed up since December 3 and there is some important information and files on there that I just can't lose. I already tried switching out the hard drive from my computer to another mac, but for some reason, the screw keeping the hard drive attached, is stripped and there's no way to get it out. Very strange since I've never tried.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
    Thank you!

    Jenn,
If you cannot run Repair Disk from Disk Utility you are ARE NOT running it from the original Install Disk that came with the computer or the Snow Leopard Upgrade Disk you purchased. Please follow the directions I provided and you should be able to run Repair Disk form Disk Utilities.
Regarding Best Buy I would recommend NOT taking it to them for repair, if you have an Apple Store in your area please take it there. If you don't have an Apple Store within a couple of hour drive use this link to locate an AASP to take your machine to.
I am assuming you have your Time Machine backups on an external HD. If so they are safe for now. In the event you need to reformat the internal HD on your MBP and reinstall OS X you can use the TM backups to restore from.
Regarding "do you think copying the disk as mentioned (from the disk utility) would work?" No that would not work.
Lets first see if Disk Utility can repair your internal HD. If for some reason that fails then you can run Apple Hardware Test and see if any HD errors are reported there. And finally if that doesn't come up with anything then you can make an appointment at an Apple Store or AASP.

  • BLUE SCREEN ERROR!!! - Stop: 0x00000124 (0x00000003 0x00000000 0x000000000 0x00000000)

    hi,
When i restart my Windows 2008 R2 server, suddenly a blue screen appeared. In the screen the message was like,
System malfunction call your hardware vendor for support. After getting this message i gave a force restart but while booting
i got another blue screen error in which i got the below error code
Stop: 0x00000124 (0x00000003,0x00000000,0x000000000,0x00000000) and after dumping physical memory(100%) the system is keep on restarting as it happened before with blue screen.
In the server machine LCD display i am getting another error message like,
    E1716 Chipset IERR. Bus 0 Dev 20. Function 2 . Review &. clear SEL.
Can anyone help me to understand the actual problem and how come i can resolve this?...

This from the Dell web site.
The system BIOS has reported a chipset internal error that resides in bus ##, device ##, function ##.
Check the SEL for more information, and then clear the SEL. Remove AC power to the system for 10 seconds, and restart the system (SEL = System Event Logs)
So I probably contact the hardware vendor.

  • R61 R&R won't start after "unmountable boot volume" error

    Hello all,
New user, first post - after problem, of course.
I have an R61 Thinkpad with Windows XP on it.  (SP2 or SP3, not sure).  Has worked flawlessly for years, then the other day I got the dreaded "unmountable boot volume" error and it would not start.
No problem - I re-start, hit the ThinkVantage button, then hit F11 to use the R&R hidden on a separate partition of the hard drive........I get the black screen with the big progress bar, ok, then a blue screen......then nothing.  Hangs up and sits there.  I have repeated this about 5 times now.
No problem! - I was smart enough to make an R&R CD set a while ago!  Put the primary R&R disk in the CD drive, start the machine, ThinkPad button, F12 this time to choose boot from CD.....much CD activity ensues and I once again get the black screen with the big progress bar.  It takes much longer, and I get teh blue screen - BUT - then it goes one extra step to display the "ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery 4" screen with the life preserver image.
Excellent, I thing - except it then hangs there.  Just sits there.  No disk activity.  No keys will do anything.
I can find no threads here or on any other forum with this particular issue.
Am I fubar?  Or is there something else I can do?
    Thanks a bunch.

Hi jim, welcome to the forums,
Is the hard drive recognised in BIOS, was there an entry in the boot list against HDD0?
Regardless of it being shown in BIOS / boot list or not, the first thing I would do is to reseat the hard drive and see if that helps, maybe over time it's lost contact to the mainboard socket. If you don't know how to do this you can find out at the R61 movies site.
The next thing I would do is run a hard drive diagnosis check from a bootable cd, these can be downloaded from all HDD manufacturer's websites e.g. Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test.  It may be that the drive has simply gone bad after all those years of work.
Let us know how you get on

  • Blue Screen Error Please Help.

Hello ... i m getting this error when ever i start my pc Multiprocessor_configuration_not_supported... this error came when my system finished booting then eventually this blue screen error occured and i needed to restart my computer .. after restarting
this error gone and my system runs fine.... i want to ask why i always get this error at the very first time when ever i start my computer... i have windows 7 professional 64bit and Intel Xeon 5160 3.0 GHZ dual processors 8 gb ddr2fb ram.....i updated my bios
    also but it wasn`t effective..
    please help..

Please post a copy of your dump file as a shared file to your Sky Drive with a link here.
The dump file will be created at c:\windows\minidump. You may need to change your settings in Windows to be able to see the file. To show hidden files type Folder Options in the search box above the Start button and select View,
Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide
extensions for known file types" is not checked.
What is your computer make and model? If not a branded computer what is your motherboard make and model?
Please download and run Driver View and upload a copy of the report it produces to your Sky Drive. To get a report on all drivers select Edit, Select All followed by File, Save Selected Items.
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/driverview.html
Please provide a copy of your System Information file. Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key (alternative is Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information).
Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to
allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload to your Sky Drive, share with everyone and post a link here. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode. The request for a copy of this file is additional
to answering the question about make and model.

    Hello pleurisy,
Your system is getting an error when trying to play a game.
This might be caused by the system getting too hot.
    Do a hard reset.
    Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.
This should reset the hardware in the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
    Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.
When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.
If your still getting the error, go to HP.com and update the BIOS.
Here is a link to the update.
Also make sure that the system does not have a buildup of dust inside the system.
Take the side panel off and clean the inside of the computer with compressed air.
Let me know how everything goes.
    Have a good day.

  • Blue screen error code. Please help.

    late 2008 version.
Recently my school reinstalled windows 7 but after he did that, there was some blue screen error code which only appears while running on windows and everything is fine on the mac side.
He reinstalled windows 7 again but the blue screen error code started again. He said that it could be that my apple disc is not original which caused the error code, however last year they were able to installed windows 7 without any issue. He also said that it could be the hard drive problem.
Another problem I have is that while on windows the hard disk drives doesn't show the mac too.
Please help! Much appreciated if any of you can help me out.

Unless you run a VM such as Parallels, you're not going to be able to see your Mac disk using Boot Camp. If I were you, I'd see about getting Parallels Desktop and installing Windows 7 on it. You can then inter-operate with both systems.

These crashes were related to memory corruption (probably caused by a driver).
Please run these tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.
If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved. If you don't
know what it is you probably are not overclocking.
Since it is more likely to be a driver please run verifier first.
1-Driver verifier (for complete directions see our wiki here)
If verifier does not find the issue we can move on to this.
2-Memtest. (You can read more about running memtest here)
If you cannot boot after enabling verifier reboot into safe mode

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You got bugcheck 0xa - "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".  A kernel mode component tried to read from address 0 at an inappropriate time.
Can you upload the contents of c:\windows\minidump to your SkyDrive and
    provide a link?
For dealing with Blue Screens, general guidance follows:
Consider running chkdsk on all partitions.  Let chkdsk complete on each partition and see if that helps.
    Also consider running SFC /SCANNOW.
If you boot into safe mode, do you still experience bugchecks? What about if you do a clean
    boot, or device
    clean boot?
For memory corruption cases such as you seem to be experiencing, it can be helpful to use Driver Verifier.  To enable Driver Verifier... start->verifier.exe->OK->Create standard settings- >Next->select driver names from a list->Next->sort
by Provider->select all non-Microsoft drivers->Finish, and OK your way out  of the dialog.
Then, reboot and use the system as you normally would, and wait for a problem.  In the event that the system does not boot  completely after enabling driver verifier, boot into Safe Mode and run driver verifier, and tell it to delete the
    changes.
Wait for a bugcheck to occur after enabling verifier as described, and then upload it to your SkyDrive,
    and provide a link.
Consider testing memory with Windows Memory Diagnostic or memtest86. Note that memory that passes tests is not necessarily  good memory - it just hasn't failed a test.  Consider systematically eliminating RAM from the system - run with
a couple of  modules for a while, and see how things go. Then try the other modules.
Other common suggestions include ensuring drivers are up to date (including video drivers), as well as ensuring that you're  using the latest BIOS.

  • Unmountable Boot Volume error in Z61T

    Hi Members,
I just encountered the the Error Unmountable Boot volume error(Blue Screen)  in my Z61T Think pad laptop.
I'm not sure what caused this error. Is it possible to fix the error?
I tried to go in to Recovery Console using XP CD and then repair the OS, but unfortunately when i go to repair mode i get another error which says unable to recognize the hard drive. Im really confused as of what is the exact problem with my laptop and also im worried about that data.
appreciate if anyone can throw some light in to the issue and help me out in fixing the same.
    Thanks
    Rajesh

If you believe that your hard disk/file system may be corrupted, try using any bootable diagnostic cd.They are operating system independent and will let you know if your HDD is getting corrupted.
Try the data life guard diagnostics(bootable).
    Cheers and regards,
