Boot Solaris 10 Install CD with Sunblade 100 with SPARCIIe

OK > boot cdrom
This fails and is looking at [platform/sun4u/kernel/sparcv9/unix], asking for the boot file name. I have used these install CDs on other systems (probably 32-bit) and I understand that 32-bit and 64-bit installs are now on same CDs.
I also tried boot cdrom install with errors.
I think this error is probably related to 64-bit boot since Sunblade 100 with SPARCIIe requires 64-boot only boot.
Any idea what the boot-file I should specify is?
Thank You

The symptoms sound as if you're attempting to use CDs for the
Solaris-10(x86) instead of the proper Solaris-10(SPARC) disks.
Both sets would be readable by an OS, but only the SPARC distro
would be bootable on a SPARC-based system such as your Sunblade 100.
There hasn't been a 32-bit SPARC system since pre-Ultra days.
... perhaps 10 years ???
The PeeCee universe still swims in 32-bit-land.
The x86 port of Solaris has both kernels,
but that's for a completely different architecture.

  • What external tape drives are compatible with sunblade 100s?

    hi,
    please, can anybody tell me:
    1. where i can find out whether or not a particular tape drive is compatible with my sunblade 100 workstation running solaris 9?
    2. do external tape drives usually connect to the workstation's serial port?
    3. what kind of specs/features should i be looking out for?
thanks in advance for your replies.

I would imagine you could use any tape drive with your sun blade... most are connected by either scsi or fiber channel... there could be some that are network controlled... not aware of any that are controlled by serial port...
GOOGLE is a wonderful thing... try it, you will like it...
compatibility is more concerned with which OS and program you want to use with the tape drive...
specs depend on what you are backing up... a single user would most likely only need a single drive... if you were a multi-national corp, then maybe you might contact Sun Sales...
maybe you should to some research yourself...

  • IMac won't boot after install of itunes 7.6 with ipod connected

Just an FYI for anyone that comes across this issue. If you do, just disconnect your
ipod and the system will boot up.

Hi Dean, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Unbeknownst to you, you had problems on your HD before the update.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...

  • Wont Boot or Install New OS - Flashing Folder with Question Mark

I was trying to upgrade the OS. It downloaded all files. Asked for restart and then went into this mode of displaying flashing folder with "?". Tried to boot from original install CD by pressing down C key but again it gives flashing folder with "?". If I boot with D key even then it gives flashing folder with "?"
Should I try to replace the hard drive?
The CD I was trying to install from MAC OS X Install Disc 1 (10.4.8)
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.
It is an Intel processor. 2.16 Core 2 Duo.
I believe it originally came with Tiger pre-installed - it was purchased around early to mid 2007. However, it was then used by my son who went to a boarding school where they installed 10.5 I believe. And they "locked it down" with parental controls etc. Perhaps that is part of the issue.
I had logged into admin and was doing an OS Update (dont recall exact function). It downloaded bunch of stuff and then asked for reboot. On reboot it got stuck on the flashing folder.
The CD/DVD I am using is an Apple CD which says
    For Mac Computers
Mac OS X Install Disc 1
    Mac OS Version 10.4.8
    Copyright 2007.
I assume these are the original CD/DVDs that came with MacBook Pro.
    Thanks

  • Hum problem with DDTS-100 with Klipsch Promedia 5.1

I have a problem with me decoder DDTS-100 since the beginning. I use it with Promedia 5.1 Klipsch kit.
When I use digital sources either optical or coax, when my decoder does'nt receive any signal from my DVD or X-box, I am earing a big hum coming out from my speakers. And then when my DDTS-100 receive a digital signal the hum disapeer.
I am not earing the hum when I use the analog input.
I am very disapointed about this bug because when the volume is high I am worried about my Klipsch kit.
    Thanks in advance
    Mat

I finnaly found out my problem
The buzz came out from my coax cable from my DVD. My DVD player was probably inducing 60Hz on the coax output.
I switched to the optical output and no more buzz.
I'll need to buy a new toslink cable to plug my x-box on the optical input #2
Also I pluged my TV audio out in my st analog input, it also induced a 60 Hz on my DDTS-100. The decoder does not seem to filter out electric noises.
I'm pretty happy to have found out my problem but I'm very dispointed that the DDTS-100 does not filter any electric noises.

Complete install from CD Media on all 3 machines (default, Entire Group.) On the 100's, after final reboot, X-Server would not start on console. /var/dt/Xerrors showed "not found" libraries (libfont.so.1, libtypesclr.so.1) and Xsun would die. On the 150, no problems.
I compared (by size) /usr/openwin on the 100's and the 150 and revealed the 100's directory pretty much empty. (Sizes at end.)
I copied over /usr/openwin from the 150 to the 100, rebooted and JDS and CDE are working fine.

  • Sunblade 100 questions

My new toy is on the way. I have several questions, will figure these out eventually but anyone ( especially from Sun with knowledge of the Sunblade 100 ) with opinions or knowledge I am interested in hearing from.
The machine is evidently pre-installed with Solaris 8 1/01 and a bunch of patches. That's nice, and fine for most people, but I want to figure out how to re-install all on my own.
First general area: How useable will the machine be when I try installing Solaris 8 1/01 without putting in the whole list of patches recommended/listed in the produt notes guide? Are the patches mostly related to "fancy" things like supporting video (beyond base already in machine), supporting usb stuff, etc ... or does the machine really have problems without?
Second general area: Memory configuration. Machine ships with 128 Meg of PC 133 ECC ... I can add other 128 meg compatible to the other slots, right? I don't need to put 512 meg chip into the first slot, right?
Third general area: Sun ships with one 15 gig drive IDE drive. The machine will support almost any regular IDE drives, in the primary or secondary bays, correct? I want to try adding a 40 gig maxtor into second area, will also try experimenting with 40 gig maxtor as primary ... any hints on issues I may run into?
    Thanks in advance ... John

Ok, the sunblade 100 rocks! Everyone should have one ... that being said, this is what I have learned so far!
First, it ships with two different operating environment disks that let you install 10/00 or 1/01 versions of Solaris 8, then patches those versions as needed for the Sunblade. Thanks Sun, very nice work there.
It also supports other standard IDE drives very nicely (I have a 40 gig maxtor in there and a 6 gig wd currently) (and saved the 15 gig shipped with it ... for what I don't know!).
My machine is currently at 512 meg ( you can buy 256 meg of ECC PC133 at about 99 bucks) ... more memory on the way.
So far it has done a very nice job of recognizing/using standard PC components. What about SCSI controllers for the internal expansion slots? Sun sells one ( kind of pricey ) ... what will it recognize and use? Will it see old ones, new ones, what? Does Sun have a list somewhere of what is supported? Opinions by anyone about what may work?
Thanks in advance. Hey, who is sungodone?
    Cheers, John

    Hi,
OpenSPARC T1 v1.5 does not support Solaris boot. This feature is scheduled for v1.6 which is expected to come out soon.
With v1.5, you can boot hypervisor and can run stand-alone C program. Method to link C program executable in the hypervisor binary is described in the Design and Verification document.
openboot.bin included in the S10image directory is meant for booting Solaris on Legion full-system simulator.

  • Trouble with Solaris 10 install on SunBlade 100 using Media CDs from Sun

    Hello World,
My SunBlade 100 was not reading various burned Solaris 10 media, so I purchased the media kit from Sun. The installation is successful up until the point where it asks for CD2. I didn't even hear the drive spin when I clicked "Next" after inserting CD2.
I know it is not the CD drive since it obviously works for CD1. It is also not an intermittent problem with the CD drive because CD1 works each time I run the install. I also don't think it is the media since CD2 went right from the factory envelope to my CD drive.
    So:
    1. Has anyone encountered something like this?
    2. Can I resume the installation from the command line?
    Many Thanks,
    Greg

    Actually ...
Yes, it can be the optical drive.
Those factory shipped drives in the SB100's were prone to spontaneously failing, one minute to the next.
Additionally the CD's are actually written differently, whether they are the bootable ones in the set versus the non-bootable CDs in the set.
    Data track layouts are different.
The optical drive could commonly have difficulty reading every disk you ever insert into it.
Borrow a replacement drive from a PeeCee.
Jumper it the same as the current drive and just use it.
If that works, then go buy a replacement.
Optical read-only drives are laughably cheap.
Optical read/write DVD drives are inexpensive, as well.

  • Running Dual boot windows 8 and win 7 pro with xp mode installed!! I love it!!

It took over 2 days to figure out how to adjust the bios to get my win 7 pro DVD to boot and install dual boot on this GREAT MACHINE!!
Step 1: using diskmgmt.msc you have to shring the C partition. I shrunk it so I had 80GB remaining as unallocated space.
Step 2: You have to enter the machine Bios adn set the BIOS to Both and UEFI as first
Step 3: Connect your usb dvd
Step 4: Put your win 7 pro dvd in the usb dvd drive
Step 5: Reboot your machine and when it starts press F12 to get the boot menu and select the usb dvd drive then press enter
    The machine restarts
Message on screen says press a key to boot from cd/dvd
Press space and it boots up the win 7 pro DVD
After files copy and load the setup screen asks to accept the agreement and where to install win 7
BE SURE TO SELECT THE 80GB location
Then follow thru the win 7 prompts to load it.
When the machine restarts you will see a dual boot screen with Windows 7 on top as first selection and Windows 8 below it as 2nd selection.
Make sure to hit enter with windows 7 selected
    The win 7 installation completes.
You will see many items with drivers not installed dont fret.
You can load most of the drivers by highlighting the device in control panel/device manager and pick update driver then select BROWSE for DRIVER and be sure to put in drive D:\ which is now the windows 8 drive and hit search.
Many of the windows 8 drivers installed with no issue.
The Realtek driver was an exception .. goto to the lenovo site and pick the x100e tablet and download the LAN driver from there  about (4MB). Copy it to flash drive and install it in win 7 from the .exe file. The driver for LAN will install sucessfully. The version of the driver is 7.46 something the 7.11 versions do not workl.
I have only 3 drivers that I could not find - 2 list as unknown and are related to ACPI or power management and 1 lists as USB controller but all the USB stuff works without it.
Be sure to either shutdown the system or sign out of win 8 when your done so you get the dual boot menu. If you shutdown while logged into win 8 the next time you start up it will go right to win 8 until you signout and restart.
Just to let you know an easy way to shutdown is go to the desktop and press ALT + FN + F4 and a shutdown menu comes up on the desktop.
Once win 7 pro is installed you can download the XP mode free from Microsoft and install it.
This is of course AFTER you have ACTIVATED WINDOWS 7 ONLINE with YOUR ACTIVATION KEY(you supply).
ENJOY! This is the BEST machine I ever had!

It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...

    2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
    - A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
    - Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
    - ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
    - In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.

Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use Boot Camp. There's a Boot Camp Support Community where everybody uses Boot Camp. You should also post this question there.

Boot Camp doesn't install the drivers. You have the drivers on a separate USB device if you followed directions. Once in Windows connect the USB drive with the driver software. It should startup automatically and install the drivers.
You don't even need to do that. As downloading the drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant can be unreliable, it is better to get the package directly from here:

Copy the .zip file to a USB flash drive or burn it to a DVD in OS X. Install Windows as normal, insert the flash drive/DVD in Windows, copy the .zip file to the hard drive, extract it, then run the setup executable.
