Boot stalls/repeats - verbose boot reveals stall on Bluetooth

I have a problem with my MacBook 2 GHz running 10.5.1 - the boot up stalls and keeps repeating itself until eventually it will continue and boot up.
It gets to the gray screen with the circle graphic...sticks there for about 2 minutes and then shuts down and starts over. It usually does this between 5 and 10 times before it will continue and finish the boot.
Here's what I've done to try and solve the problem:
1) Reset PRAM - no change
2) Reset system controller - no change
3) Remove battery and put back in - no change
When I run a verbose boot (command + V) the boot stalls on a Bluetooth controller entry. I can't find any reference to that.
This started happening after I ran system updates a couple of weeks ago. The unit functions correctly in all other areas. Once booted up you can put it to sleep and resume with no problems.
Ideas?

Your disk is dirty, clean it with a bit of rubbing alcohol and a soft clean cloth to polish.
Hold c and try booting from the disk now,
if it doesn't work, order a replacement, either a 10.6.3 retail (no free iLife, comes faster) or machine specific 10.6 disks (for machines that originally came with 10.6.4 or later you must use these)
When you install, use Disk Utility to Erase with Security Option > Zero the new drive, it's better for it that you do, maps off failing sectors ahead of time.
last resort to install is making a 10.6 boot USB on another Mac, in case the optical drive is bad

  • Error in verbose boot

    AppleBCM5701Ethernet: 0 0 setFixedSpeed - logic error, speed any?
That error keeps showing up and slowing down the boot. Appears at the very end of the verbose boot. Is this a problem, i rarely use ethernet, but is it broken?
    Thanks in advance!

I would suggest that something in the startup items may be a cause of this. Something you have installed, perhaps. Startup with the Shift key pressed gives Safe mode and this disables such items. A search for lsd, apart from the obvious mind-enhancing links, suggests that the Laboratory for Simulation Development might be connected. Does that ring a bell for you?
There is also a Live Sequencer that sounds more up your street, but that appears to be Windows software. Or perhaps something in the Unix installation. I cannot find anything in the system processes that might link to this.
As to bad sectors (perhaps not); but memory is something that sometimes rears its head, depending on where it came from; and even then memory can go bad.
If it happens again, a look at logs might reveal something: look in Console. It might be useful to post any such logs here as someone (not me) might be able to identify a process. As a point, do you have any devices attached when starting up?

  • Spinning Grey Wheel - won't boot, with verbose boot kext can't load errors

Just solved a problem with an iMac that wouldn't boot for a customer, and thought I should share the solution as well. None of the previous discussions covered his exact situation.
Problem: after a power failure, the iMac would not boot. It would just sit with the Apple Logo, and the grey spinning wheel.
We found that it would boot into safe mode. Likely in the first boot to safe mode, any file system errors had been fixed.
Trying to boot regularly again had the system just sit with the grey spinning wheel again.
At this point the customer brought the system in to me.
I was able to verify no hardware errors (Booted from external hard drive, and checked the System.log on the customers drive, no I/O errors)
Re-checked that there were no filesystem errors (there were not)
Did a repair permissions hoping for a quick fix - no luck.
Did a verbose boot, saw that at least 6 kext couldn't load including AppleFileSystem.
Forced a Kext Cache rebuild hoping that it was just a cache issue.
Next verbose boot revealed that the 6 kext couldn't load because IOStorageFamily could not be found.
rebooted to external drive again. Checked iMacs hard drive, IOStorageFamily.kext was in the Extensions folder. Replaced it with a known good IOStorageFamily.kext from the same OS version (in this case, 10.6.4)
Repaired Permissions so the new kext would be set as a system file again.
(If you do this as the root user with Terminal commands, you wouldn't need to repair permissions, but I just used the GUI method)
The iMac could now boot normally (first boot is a little slow as it rebuilds the kext cache)
    Alternate Possible Fixes:
    1) Time Machine - boot from Snow Leopard DVD (or original install disks) and restore to a save before the power failure. (after checking the disk for filesystem problems)
    2) Using the Snow Leopard DVD (or original install disks) do a re-install of the system (In 10.5 and earlier, this would be an Archive and Install) This replaces the possibly damaged parts of the system. (again, after checking for filesystem problems)

I posted the answer in with the original problem.

  • Verbose Boot. How to get rid of it?

My Mac Pro boots with a bunch of what look like Unix line-items showing in white monospaced text on surround lines of black.
How did I do that? How do I turn them off?
At one point it seems to be saying that it is in dev mode with a "verbose boot."

I would first try resetting NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that doesn't fix it, take a look at the last commands in this article: http://www.cnet.com/news/boot-argument-options-in-os-x/

  • Verbose boot after imaging

Having received a fresh batch of NVidia MacBooks I've remade our default image and attempted to image the MacBooks. However once the imaging is completed they all boot in verbose mode. Other than this they operate perfectly. Our deployment script blesses the disk once the imaging is complete and I've tried blessing both the volume and the folder but it still boots in verbose mode. I've also tried disabling verbose boot in the NVRAM (it's not enabled anyway).
The only way that I've found to fix this is to manually select "Macintosh HD" in the Startup Disk Pref pane. So I guess the question is, what else is the pref pane doing all of a sudden?

You're close to understanding the issue.
The problem you're having is the result of the boot.efi file in System/Library/CoreServices being out of date. For some reason, Apple doesn't update this when system updates are installed. The newest version is instead located in /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi.
When you open the Startup Disk Pref panel and then select the hard disk, the pref pane appears to update the copy in CoreServices with the one from /usr/standalone/i386/
So, there are a couple of solutions.
    1) on your master image, open the Startup Disk Pref pane and re-select the boot disk, then create your base image. This will force boot.efi to update, and when you deploy the image to those new systems, they will no longer be in verbose mode.
    2) copy the version in /usr/standalone/i386/ to System/Library/CoreServices as part of your imaging process.
No matter how you decide to do it, you must get the latest version of boot.efi to System/Library/CoreServices

  • Verbose Boot

    Hello,
I have recently come across an eMac that presents a long boot sequence during startup. I take it this sequence is usually hidden by the boot screens, but not in my case. I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled OS X 10.4 as a part of taking new ownership, and hoped that would solve the verbose boot sequence.
The Mac boots just fine, it is just showing all of the process each time. How would one turn this off?
    Thanks

How would one turn this off?
Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release the keys when you hear the second startup chime.

genius bar suggested deleting 3rd party plist items.  i deleted only some of them for software
i no longer use or recognize. they also suggest a verbose boot to show errors. all i could see
was ReadyKeyAction. does anyone know what this is, what it does, how or should i repair/delete it?

  • Snow Leopard booting in unwanted Verbose mode

    Hi,
Just bought a 2nd hand Mac Mini on which I clean installed Snow Leopard. Whenever I boot the screen goes black and fills with white text with information about the boot process. Verbose Mode, I presume. After the GUI comes in the Mac Mini boots and functions as normal. My question is how do I turn this off. I have tried: "sudo nvram boot-args=" to no effect. Is there another way to stop Verbose mode?

  • ThinkPad hangs on boot - stuck at Lenovo boot screen

I'm experiencing random boot issues with a brank new thinkpad yoga 20CD0038PB win 8.1 pro. Once the system stalls on the boot screen the fn light stays on and I cannot even access bios. Powering down and keeping power button pressed for several second doesn't help either, However If I leave the computer powered down for and hour or longer it usually boots like nothing happened. Then the issue comes back intermittently with a restart or sometimes a preceeding blue screen.
Sometimes when the issue occures it also reports hdd0 error, and lenovo sent me a new hdd which I replaced that this has not fixed the issue.
I have the latest BIOS GQET29WW 1.09. I've run memory and disk tests using Lenovo Solution Center and memory tests in bios and they were ok.
On the BIOS download page I've found references to some issues regarding boot hangs with earlier versions of bios (1.7).
At this point I'm stuck. Anyone experiencing similar issues?

I am also experiencing this problem Like the OP, it seems random and has occured from day one.
    Boots to Lenovo Screen
    Fails to show spinning circle
    F1 light stays on
Nothing further happens (longest I have left it for is ~ 5 min).
If I hold the power button down for several seconds, I can switch the machine off. Usually waiting 30-60 seconds and re-starting is sufficient for a normal boot and start up. On occassion, I have to go through the shut down cycle twice before I can successfully start the computer.
Unlike the OP, I have not seen any error messages, or blue screen.

  • 2010 Mac Pro Boot Camp - Refuses to boot Windows after installing Boot Camp drivers

    Hey all,
    I have a quad 3.2Ghz 2010 Mac Pro with a Radeon 5870 and 8 GB RAM.
I have 2 10000RPM WD Raptor drives, the first drive is my Lion boot drive. The 4th bay contains the second Raptor which has Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed. Bay 2 has Time Machine, bay 3 has a Windows backup drive.
I had first installed Windows and the Boot Camp drivers a few months ago and everything was humming along smoothly. Monday I tried to boot into Windows and it crashed immediately after the black Booting Windows screen started to change to the login window. This happened repeatedly. Nothing changed on the system that I am aware of. Whenever I tried to boot windows again, it booted into the repair mode. That did not seem to work because after running the repair it would still not boot.
So I did what is usually required of Windows, and that was to reinstall. I reformatted the hard drive, ran Boot Camp assistant, and started the install.
Everything was peachy so far, so I tried to reinstall the Boot Camp drivers (4.0). Did a reboot. Same problem. Doh!
So I did ANOTHER reinstall, and everything was fine. But this time I tried to install the Boot Camp drivers off the os install disc that came with my Mac (3.1). Still no go!
So finally I did my third reinstall and after that I did not install Boot Camp drivers. However, I did load up the CD and individually installed drivers for the Apple Mouse, Apple Keyboard, Cinema Display, etc. No problems whatsoever. Everything is actually still humming along fine.
So it looks like running the full Boot Camp install for some reason no longer works. Which means I am missing the Apple Boot Camp control panel, but that's not really a big deal. Althought it's quite annoying to not have the functionality of the special Mac keyboard keys like volume control, etc.
Has anyone run into this? I thought it might be a hardware problem but my Mac OS X OS exhibits no problems whatsoever.
    Thanks!

    Thank you to The hatter.
I have a Mac Pro mid 2010 with a SSD and several internal hard disks. For some time I was trying to install Windows 7 on a fresh boot camp volume on a new WD 7200rpm 1TB hard disk. It was taking hours to install, and then I had a series of failures to reboot that proved permanent. The Window Repair utility would come up and took forever to repair the volume - but failed to actually do so, requiring completion reinstallation of the bootcamp volume. This occurred three times, between 1 day and 2 months after installation. I had already moved the Windows drive in to drive slot 1 of the Mac Pro.
Eventually I gave up and installed boot camp on a secondary partition of the SSD. This worked fine, however is limited in capacity. So yesterday I thought I would try to install Windows on the hard disk again. The Windows installer took many hours to do its thing, and eventually a message came up that the installation had failed.
I took your tip about possible hard disk failure, and ran Techtool Pro surface scan. It turns out that there are lots of bad blocks being reported. According to Micromat's documentation, the bad blocks being reported are those that may be in critical areas of the disk that cannot be mapped out. They recommend low level reinitialisation (with zeros) to map out the bad blocks, if possible. I am now running Apple's Disk Utility to do this, and fingers crossed that this reinitialisation succeeds, or I will have to replace the drive.

  • 10.6.3 ran from install, not from power on boot, yes from safe boot

Installed 10.6.3 from retail disk to FW external HD. Migrated everything from 10.5.8 internal boot drive. 10.6.3 ran fine until I shut down overnight. Power up the following morning gave login screen, then blue screen. Rebooted to safe mode; is now running fine. Repaired permissions more than once. (Log shows exactly the same items found and "repaired.")
Would appreciate a systematic way to determine what's keeping the normal boot from completing.

  • IMovie - Black Screen - Scrambled Boot Screen - Mac not booting: I got it somehow fixed

    Hi there,
I am not sure if its a Mavericks issue, but I think I should report somewhere about it:
I have a Early 2011 MacBook Pro and upgraded it yesterday to Mavericks. I played a bit around with the new iMovie today, and suddendly the display turned black. I did a hard reset and encountered a scambled boot screen. I saw the Apple logo with wired grey lines. And the Mac didn't boot. I tried everyting: Reset PRAM/NVRAM and all other magic tricks out there. Diagnostics was not booting, the same as the Recovery system. I even tried to boot Windows7 from the bootcamp partition, but only got saw a half windows logo totally pixeled. I also tried to connect an external Display: nothing working.
For me, the diagnostics was clear: ****, the logics board was fried. Especially the graphics gard.
But something was strange for me: My machine was running smooth for 2 1/2 years, and 1 day after installating Mavericks it kills itself? ***?
And guess what: After the 1001st attempt to boot, playing around with all available boot shortcuts, I just noticed the boot screen looked okay again. And the machine booted. The last thing I was doing was doing verbose boot (holding shift, then holding shift+v).
I have no idea what happened, but I am happy its back to normal. And I hope it will not happen again in a few minutes. If so, I will report. If not, be happy to find something when you google for it. And if you work for Apple, please tell me what the **** happened and fix it. I am scared now to ever start iMovie again.

Could be your monitor power supply is going. could also be 10.6.6 so first try to get back to a OSX which did not give you problems.

Hi-Thanks for the quick reply, and sorry for the all CAPS.I did what you suggested, and it worked!!You are the Man!!
On some of my other machines I always have the boot to cd-,as first and then h.d. as one of the last, but i've never had to go back in bios to change to h.d.  as the first. Is there any reason for this?
One other thing,it seems that the boot process takes longer than i normally wait on,on other machines,is this anything to be concerned with?
Once again, thank you for your knowledge and help.
"One other thing,it seems that the boot process takes longer than i normally wait on,on other machines,is this anything to be concerned with?"
perhaps no, can be just slow initialisation(enable "quick boot", disable floppy drive seek to speedup boot time a bit.
"On some of my other machines I always have the boot to cd-,as first and then h.d. as one of the last, but i've never had to go back in bios to change to h.d.  as the first. Is there any reason for this?"
well if the CD are blank or CD in drive is not bootable, boot process will continue with 2nd assigned boot device.(probably you don't have hdd configured as 2nd boot choice)(try to boot from other device should be enabled from BIOS as well). also if there is no respond(no user action taken due few seconds) at "press any key to boot from CD" boot from CD will be skipped automatically and boot process will be forwarded to second boot selection..
