Boot to "no" symbol-- not the hd's fault

My macbook pro running 10.6.4 is set to turn on at 6pm when i get home from work. However I get home from work and the power is out. It stayed out for about 24 hours and when the power came back on my mbp boots to the "no" symbol that from searching others have experienced. I immediately thought hard drive was to blame but still did the usual (pram reset, boot to safemode, repair disk permissions) to no avail. Then i pulled the hard drive and stuck it in an external and it booted right up with my mac mini. So it is not the hd's fault which leaves the question what is??
Other background info:
MBP was running with no battery as i am currently using it as a desktop 24/7 bc the screen broke.
I have a time machine back ups.
Don't have snow leopard disc but do have a leopard disk (which i used for disk utility).
Anyone have a guess?
Thanks!

I think you've got your question and answer right here. What trauma broke the MBP's screen? Whatever it was, I think that something else was damaged as well. I recently dropped a MBP, and it continued working for about a month, then just died out of the blue.
If the machine wouldn't boot from a hard drive that 1) it used to boot from and 2) can still boot a different machine, it's got to be a hardware problem. Call Apple for service.

  • Boot Camp Assistant thinks I'm booting from an external (not the case!)

OK, long story short, I had Vista installed via boot camp, I'm going back to XP now. Problems arose and Boot Camp refused to let me restore the partition in order to start over.
Here's what I did. I completely wiped the three drives I have installed in the Mac Pro — Completely: zeroed them out. RAIDed the two 500GB drives together like I've always had them. The 250GB (which has been in the past, and will be again, my boot camp drive) is left blank for the time being. I installed 10.5 onto the RAID pair. No problems so far. The moment I got to my desktop after installation I open Boot Camp Assistant. I click continue and it gives me the message I got before:
"*You cannot partition an external disk drive.*
Restart your computer using your computer's internal startup disk."
Awesome. I don't even have any external drives attached.
Any idea why I'm getting this? I've been struggling for the last week trying to figure this out.
Here's a shot of the message along with a system profiler window with my hard drive details:

    Thanks for your insight,
    Sean

I almost never use BootCamp Assistant and don't find it that useful.
I will say that I would never, ever, RAID un-like drives and it seems you have Maxtor and Samsung for your RAID.
I would only use Seagate if it was OEM, maybe, or a .11 new series.
I assume you have 10.5.1+ and while I can't claim to have read even 10% or the threads in the Leopard forum, I can't recall hearing of the error you have with repair permissions, though I would always do so while booted from your boot drive, not from the DVD and 10.5.0 (I wasn't going to buy Leopard until it came out on a later version DVD, 10.5.0 is just "too early" for me).
I always had to pull OS X system when I installed Vista x64.
Not sure why, I don't think zeroing the drives was necessary to remove any and all partitions, though.

  • Adding a Preloader to a Symbol, not the Stage. How?

I have a local video (not one hosted on YouTube/Vimeo) as part of a Symbol. Since it's a local video and may take a while to load once the button to load it is clicked, I'd like to add a Preloader to either the video itself, or to the Symbol. It's easy enough to do this to the entire Stage, but I just want the Preloader to appear when the Symbol it's in is loaded onto the Stage. How do I do this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
You can do it using the "poster" attribute: HTML video poster Attribute
I assumed that you have one and only one video and you have a preloader within the images folder, so:
    sym.$("video").attr("poster", "images/myPreloader.gif");

  • Client getting an IP lease on the 64-bit LiteTouch boot image, but not the 32-bit version.

MDT 2012 U1.  No problem with PXE booting so WDS is not the issue.
The NIC in question is the Intel I217-LM, which resides on both the new Dell Optiplex 9020 and the Latitude E7440.  I downloaded the Dell drivers and then the Intel drivers and imported them into the WindowsPE drivers folder in the workbench.  Updated
the boot images to make sure the new drivers were injected.  Both yielded the same result.  I can do everything I need to do when booting to the 64-bit LiteTouchPE_x64.wim boot image,  but not the 32-bit version.  When booting to the 32-bit
version, I get no IP configuration info at all.
When looking at the drivers in MDT, I see only one difference:  the supported OS versions.  The 64-bit driver supports 6.1, 6.1.1, and 6.2.  The 32-bit driver supports only 6.1.1 and 6.2.  Not sure if that's the issue.
Tried using drvload within 32-bit WinPE to manually inject the NIC driver.  Still no luck.  Ipconfig yields no configuration at all.
If I can't get these machines to boot to the 32-bit boot images, I can't deploy 32-bit images, unless there's a way of which I'm unaware.
EDIT:  A little extra background.  My WindowsPE folder has two subfolders called x86 and x64.  Obviously, 32-bit drivers go into the x86 folder and 64-bit drivers go into the x64 folder.  Then in the properties of the deployment share a
selection profile is selected which points to the architecture-specific folders.

Specifically what do you see when you are in WinPE, press the F8 button, and run ipconfig.
    1. ipconfig shows no network adapters (see:
http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/rpedersen/clip_image002_53DA17D4.jpg ). This means you still have not loaded the correct device drivers, check the c:\windows\system32\wpeinit.log file.
    2. ipconfig shows an "autoconfiguration IPv4 Address" with a netmastk of 255.255.0.0. This means that the client did not get an IP address from the DHCP server. Double check the connection between the client and the DHCP server.
    3. ipconfig shows a correct address. There is no problem. :^)
    Keith Garner - keithga.wordpress.com
I get the first result.  Absolutely no network adapters, which I assumed indicated no appropriate device driver.
This is the result of the wpeinit.log from the machine booting to the 32-bit boot image:

  • I am in mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book will not boot up & stays only on the grey apple screen. When I verify the disk I get open error5 :input /output error on Syst stuck on 1 minute pouring out over 50 error messages & still counting

I am in Mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book pro will not boot up & stays on the Apple grey screen . When I verify disk permissions I get
Open error 5:"input/ output error" on syst with over 50 of this messages & still counting . Disk Utility says 1 minute
But this has been going on for over 10 mins .
I can not verify disk or repair disk .
I have tried to reinstall mavericks operating system but it says my hard drive is locked which is very strange .
Does anyone know what is going on here ?
My system looks like it has been totally corrupted . Thanks Andrew

Could be. The "lock" isn't actually looking for a password.
WARNING: This will completely erase the ENTIRE hard drive.
What you would need to do is boot to recovery > disk utility > select the MAIN drive on the left side > partition > change partition layout from CURRENT to 1 PARTITION > ensure on the right side it says Format : Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) then push APPLY.
Then if it will allow us, close the windows until you see the 4 options popup again and select "Reinstall Mac OS X" select the Mac HD and you should be good to go!

    Likely this:
Errors related to third-party security software
    Error 2, 4 (or -4), 6, 40, 1000, 9006
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.
Verify that communication to albert.apple.com or photos.apple.com is not blocked by a firewall, or other Internet security setting.
Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps underAdvanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations.
Restore your device while connected to a different network.
    Restore using a different computer.

Are you using the virtual keyboard to input your password and you cannot see/find the characters you need on that keyboard?
Or are you trying to use a bluetooth keyboard and pressing the printed key does not produce the right character?

  • T60 will not boot - lights, but nothing on the screen, no beeps

    Hey everyone,
My approximately 4 year old (and thus out of warranty) T60 is having trouble booting. Sometimes, but not always, when I press the power button I get the lights turning on, but then all but the power (Z in a circle) indicator and the battery (if I have it in - I've tried it with and without) and the power cord (if that's plugged in- again, tried every way) lights stay on. Here's a video of exactly what's happening (made by someone else):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pm4Lklr6-Rk
It just sits there and nothing comes up.
I've tried the following and still had trouble booting:
Removing each of the two RAM modules (I have a 512 and a 2gig stick) - I would leave one in so that it would work, but I tried it with each.
    Removing the hard drive
    Removing the optical drive
I also opening it up to see what I could see, but there are no clearly loose connectors. The fan starts just fine, but then turns off shortly after I press the power button. The harddrive also seems to spin up, but the indicator doesn't flash for very long before the lights return to the configuration I mentioned above. There are as far as I know no beeps, though I had beeps disabled in Windows (not sure if that matters at the POST level though).
However, it does sometimes boot up. I can't tell what exactly makes it work sometimes and other times not. When it does boot, it is extremely stable and works just fine. I'm tempted to just leave it on 24/7, but I'm on vacation and will have to turn it off at least to get through airport security.
The last time, I tried holding the power button down for about a minute with all power sources disconnected, and it did boot up, but that may have been coincidence.
I've seen some threads that make it seem like perhaps this problem might be related to the USB ports (http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T400-won-t-boot-can-t-access-BIOS/td-p/20280... but visual inspection doesn't reveal anything wrong with them.
Any ideas? I'm leaving it on as long as I can now, but I can play more with turning it off and trying things once I get back home in a few days. It's frustrating, since once I get it to start up, it's more or less solid and Windows and all peripherals seem to run as expected.
    Thanks!

  • G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD

We have a DP 1ghz Quicksilver PowerMac G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the machine.
We were in the process of installing 10.4 Tiger before placing it for sale.
The Mac was originally OSX Server 10.1 that we later converted to a worksation running 10.3 Panther.
It has 1 GB of memory, 80GB hardrive, 250MB Zip Drive and a Radeon 7500 video card.
Since this machine only has a CD-R drive and not a DVD-R, we installed Tiger using another Mac via Target Disk Mode. The installation process went well, but when I tried to reboot I got a Kernel Panic right after startup screen with the grey Apple logo.
On some reboots we get to the blue startup screen, others it stops at the grey Apple logo, others a black box like the a Kernel Panic - but with no text. Twice it went directly into Open Firmware.
We have done the following during our troubleshooting:
    - Reseat RAM, Video Card, Hard Drive, Zip & CD-R connections
    - Remove RAM 1 stick at a time and reboot
    - Replace RAM with RAM from another working Quicksilver
    - Replace Video Card with one from another working Quicksilver
    - Zap PRAM
    - Reset CUDA switch
    - Unplug the MAC and remove everything (RAM, Battery, etc) for 30 minutes and try to reboot
    - Tried booting from the Macintosh Server G4 Software Restore CD
    - Tried booting from Mac OS X Server CD
    - Tried booting from AppleCare Protection Plan CD with TechTool
    - Tried booting from Diskwarrior CD
    - Tried booting from an external FireWire drive with a disk image of Tiger OS Install
    - Tried booting with the hard drive disconnected
The Mac WILL boot from the Apple Hardware Test CD and will pass ALL of the extended tests.

Conventional wisdom says that any Mac that will not boot up from a System/Install CD OS 9 or an Install CD Mac OS X, has a Hardware problem.
The diagnostic CD is a red herring because it uses a very primitive method of reading the CD, and so does not properly represent the machines general ability to read CDs.
I would look at the CD drive cables, etc, and see if another drive gives different results.
You have not mentioned using the Startup Manager (option key at Startup) to do any checking:

You could try doing a hard shut down (holding the power button or yanking the battery) and then doing a safe boot by holding the shift key at startup:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Also, not sure if this applies in your case, but I've had that happen when there's a USB drive inserted either in the computer or a connected external keyboard.  I did a hard shut down, removed the drive and it went through a normal start up.

Open, if not so already, the Windows formatter. Identify the BC Windows partition. It will be the one listed with the proper size you created and/or will be labeled as a C: drive. Be careful you select the right one or you may be corrupting the entire drive.
    Format the partition as NTFS.
