If your PC or laptop supports UEFI and legacy mode then the following tips may help you. Legacy enabled:If the bios setting is legacy enabled then hard drives and USB devices will normally boot. If you are using two independent hard drives that are not connected by boot manager then the UEFI boot hard drive will always boot first before the legacy hard drive unless the bios allows you to change the boot priority. Legacy disabled (UEFI mode):If the bios setting is legacy disabled then only UEFI devices will boot. You may run into no hard drive selection menu, no boot option menu or Boot Device not Found followed by a message Hard Disk (3f0). USB flash drives boot considerations:If you wish to boot up a USB flash device using Windows 7 repair, Windows 8 repair, Windows 7 or Windows 8 installation media then be sure to create the flash drive formatted as FAT32. You may notice a bootable flash drive showing twice in the boot menu, one marked UEFI and one not marked UEFI. Both will boot up. The popular MS Windows 7 USB WIndows installation media creation tool will create a NTFS flash drive using a Windows 7/8 iso file in NTFS format which is not bootable in UEFI mode. It works fine in legacy mode. To get around the NTFS issue, create the flash drive in NTFS then copy the contents to your hard drive, quick format the flash drive to FAT32 and then copy back the contents back to the hard drive. There are other known methods to do the above but this method is very simple.

i have a HP Sleekbook 14-b035tx which came with a windows 8 OS installed already. due to some reasons, i tried to shift it back to windows 7. After many unsuccessful tries, i finally managed to install windows 7 by changing my boot sequence to Legacy Boot.
later on, due to lack of drivers for win 7, i installed, rather upgraded to win 8 which was running on legacy boot (using MBR if im not wrong). now, i want to install a fresh copy of win 8 with UEFI but the problem is when i change my boot sequence to disable legacy boot, then during installation of win 8, i cannot see my HDD ... im using a flash drive to install win 8 which is already in UEFI (i used diskpart for that).
also, when i use legacy boot and try to install windows, then the HDD appears and when i format the HDD and create new partitions, it creates 3 partitions (System, MSR, Reserved) and the fourth one for OS. i tried installing the windows like this but after install, when i change the boot sequence to UEFI again, it fails to boot
now, i want to install windows to UEFI... and i really need help with this please ... i hope i have explained the scenario... if anyone would like to ask anything, please do ... as i really need to get this away... and also, i'd like to ask that how can i check if my HDD has been changed from MBR to GTP

I was installed ubuntu alongside windows8 but while restarting PC directly windows8 loaded, even I enabled Legacy mode. In BIOS setting it was clearly given that "In Legacy mode both UEFI and Legacy are available and UEFI has heigher priority ".

Z77A-GD65 (mostly) unable to boot usb in legacy mode

So I already made a post about this issue over in the BIOS forum back when I assumed it was something to do with the forum flash tool, but upon closer examination I was able to replicate this problem with other bootable usb sticks when I attempted to boot them in legacy mode instead of UEFI mode (and while this is viable for the Windows 8 image usb it isn't for the flash tool since when I try to boot that drive in UEFI mode it hands off to the Windows bootloader).
I am not sure where I'm going wrong here (or where to start) because this behavior doesn't seem entirely consistent and I haven't recognized any pattern in which it occurs. Basically whenever I try to boot a bootable usb device from the efi boot menu in legacy usb mode I'm presented with a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the top left corner. The inconsistency that I describe is that every so often the usb will actually boot, sometimes after only a few seconds of the blinking cursor, sometimes after leaving the screen up for an hour or so, and sometimes even if I leave the screen up overnight it still will not boot (this is what happens the majority of the time, regardless of the time interval).
I've used the "fix my stick" option in the forum tool. I've used the HP utility. Since it can be replicated across multiple usb drives I am fairly certain it isn't a geometry issue and has got something to do with my bios settings or my usb controller itself (although the only other problem I've had regarding usb is my wifi adapter only working properly on a specific port and I believe that to be unrelated).
Obviously something is amiss here. Any settings I should check out? I'm currently running no OC and I'm trying to recover my BIOS A after something went awry with the flash tool (long story as to why I was flashing in the first place, not really worth going through unless prompted...but this issue has been going on since at least early january).

I did have some issues with the ME fw at the beginning of January after a bad M-flash, but I thought I had recovered. After seeing someone with a similar problem (but with more symptoms of bad usb) had success with booting from usb after disabling the sata controller temporarily. So I've been doing that and it seems to work for now, even if it is kind of a roundabout way.

I want to wipe the harddrive, buy a Lenovo W~7 PRO installation DVD, and do a completely clean installation.
Lenovo User Guide (.pdf) Ch. 8, Adv'd Config, Installing Windows 7, p. 295 (212 of 298) says:
Start Thinkpad setup, then choose UEFI versus Legacy, then insert the installation DVD.
This obviously does not apply when the harddrive has already been wiped (necessary to 100% eliminate all traces of irreversible damage caused by a virus, including the re-installation partition (Q-drive).
When an intallation DVD is purchased from Lenovo, is not the first step to insert the DVD ?!! Then presumably there is an installation wizard resulting in a restored O.S. ?!!
If not, please tell me what surprises are in store, and where I can find a reliable written resource to consult !!!

You're over-thinking this and making it harder than it needs to be. The manual isn't helping...
The BIOS is stored in non-volatile memory on the motherboard. One would probably call it firmware, not software. It is there regardless of what's on the HDD - or whether there's even an HDD installed.
Turn your machine off. Turn it on again. When you see the logo screen, hit F1 - multiple times if necessary. That gets you into the motherboard's BIOS configuration utility - what the manual is calling "Setup".
Here's a snip below from the T520 BIOS configuration utility (actually from the on-line BIOS simulator). In the StartUp tab you can see where UEFI/Legacy can be selected. You can configure UEFI boot there. Or "both". Or - probably - just select Setup Defaults, save, and exit.

U410 Can't Boot UEFI

I pretty much imediately removed windows 8 as soon as I got it. Not knowing at the time about Secure boot. I'm trying to restore it to factory now and running into issues.
There's no issues booting into legacy, but after reinstalling windows 8 the wifi radio has been turned off and wont reenable. When I was reading up on hackintosh I ran across someone with this issue and it was fixed with a command in ubuntu. I can't seem to find this thread again if anyone knows of this sollution I'd appreciate it
After setting a admin password in bios I am able to apparently disable Secure Boot. However it doesn't seem to really disable it. When I try to boot an OS in UEFI mode all I get is a Black screen. So my question is: Is it possible for me to get UEFI mode working again without the original windows 8 recovery from the factory or sending it to lenovo for restore?

I just got a U410 Touch myself last week so I am still learning about it, but the first thing I did was to order the four DVD set of recovery media from Lenovo for it (about $59, if I recall correctly), remove the HDD and small mSATA SSD and replace it with a single, larger mSATA SSD.
In order to get the laptop to boot from the recovery media in an external USB DVD±RW disc drive I had to go into the "BIOS" and on the Boot screen set the Boot Mode to Legacy Support and the Boot Priorityto Legacy First, then go to the Exit tab and set OS Optimized Defaults to Other OS. After that, I could use the F12 key to select the boot from the DVD±RW disc drive, and shuffle through the DVDs until finished.
At that point, I went back into the BIOS and changed the settings back to UEFI and Win 8 64-bit, respectively, to allow the restore operation to continue with UEFI firmware present and allowing Secure Boot to be enabled.

Switch from uefi to legacy bios

How would you go about switching from uefi to legacy bios/boot? Would you have to reinstall windows? Can you use the hidden partitions for this? Would you need a windows install disk?

how do I switch my partitioning scheme to MBR so I can use legacy boot/bios?
In the System Configuration section of the UEFI, for starters, set the Boot Mode to CSM Boot. That essentially bypasses the UEFI.
The easiest way to change the partitioning from GPT to MBR is to use old fashion tools like a Windows 7 installation DVD to delete the existing partitions and create new ones.

I upgraded just for the sake of being up-to-date,
but I solved the problem earlier otherwise
So, I can't really comment if the newer/provided VBIOS solves the black screen problem or not.
In my case the problem was from Nvidia driver 320.18.
There is a supposedly acknowledged problem with Win 8 which silently installs on the background
an earlier Nvidia driver (311.06) from windows update,
and *not* informing the user about the background install/need for reboot.
If the user installs another/later driver without rebooting 1st it becomes a driver binary mess.
In my case, when using 320.18 with Win 8 (even from a clean install and not messing with any previous driver),
caused the monitor going to sleep after POST and when MB UEFI handed-off control to OS in 80% of the cases.
A situation I could exit from only with a hard shutdown.
So, for any other poor soul having similar problems,
it might be a good idea to try an earlier Nvidia driver.

Disabling UEFI boot or prioritizing legacy boot in dv6tqe-7000 laptop

Hey guys, I currently have windows 7 on my pavilion laptop. I'm trying to install ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS on it from the cd-rom drive. Unfortunately, the ubuntu installer does not detect my hard drive's windows 7 partition while booting in UEFI mode as Windows 7 was installed in legacy/bios mode.
I want to either disable UEFI booting or to make the bios prioritize BIOS/legacy boot ahead of UEFI so I can correctly install a second OS. Unfortunately, the bios options I see do not seem to allow me to switch to a legacy boot, they only allow me to change the boot priority within each of those modes. Is there any way for me to boot with legacy?

UEFI vs Legacy Boot order

I have disabled the secure boot option and enabled the Legacy boot option which allows me to boot from USB stick. However, UEFI takes precendence over Legacy boot and I don't want that. For a little school project that we are running we want to run the educational OS Sugar on Stick(on a USB stick) to run straight from the stick instead of kids pressing 3-4 different buttons to get to that.
In short, I want to change boot priority from UEFI first to Legacy. Let me know how to do it? Whether its possible or not? If not, then I don't need these 4 laptops that I ordered and I will return the laptops.

I was thinking to delete the "protected" EFI partition, but I am not an expert on that front, so I'll move with caution.
I know it will not load my windows and space will be wasted and so on so forth, but UEFI should not be forced like this. It is for customer's convinient and a standard, but manufacturers have started making it a rule.
My problem still remains unsolved, because I reached the same conclusion. Also, its just f9 and selecting the USB. No need to press ESC. Regardless, thanks all the same.

PXE boot UEFI Thinkpad 10 not working

struggling with this problem for some time now..
saw some related threads but not really providing an answer
have one customer who bought a bunch of Thinkpad 10 machines from lenovo and the purpose is to install them with a 8.1 SOE, untill now the only thing that works is to use a standalone usb medium
our setup is SCCM 2012 R2 on top of Server 2008R2 using infoblox instead...
the thinkpad 10 has the latest ATOM cpu and is definitely a 64 bit UEFI machine
we also noticed that some switches have problems to (try and ) boot the UEFI machines, dont know why yet
the issue is that the only thing we see during a UEFI only PXE boot is that the NBP file gets succesfully downloaded (even twice) and then just switches back to the next bootoption.
i've checked:
-PXE boot another UEFI device: same symptom
-PXE boot legacy devices: ok
-changed the bootfile in option 67 to the efi file: same symptom
-all files are in the smsboot\x64 folder
lenovo support now wants me to do this: include a winPE x64 image that supports UEFI and then run the following command on the server:
"WDSUTIL /New-MulticastTransmission /FriendlyName:"WDS Boot Transmission" /Image:"Microsoft Windows PE (x64) Win8" /ImageType:Boot /Architecture:x64
/TransmissionType:AutoCast"
but I don't see what UEFI/pxe has to do with multicasting and why should I change something on wds if UEFI boot under similar circumstances works in other implementations?
any more useful ideas folks?

if you are using dhcp options, remove them, instead configure iphelpers to point to the server hosting your pxe enabled DP (should be running server 2008r2 or later).

the problem was to convince the network guys to try this for us...
since we are using IP helpers it works to do the PXE boot for UEFI

[SOLVED] impossible to boot (UEFI-grub2) after update

Hi,
problem : after update my computer refuses to boot. It doesn't get to the grub2 (actually 1.99) menu, it just says : no boot device found.
My hardware : Asus M8Z77-V LX motherboard with 1 SSD.
In the bios I disabled the bios legacy option to force it to boot with UEFI.
As I hadn't moved to systemd yet, I waited to update a while(2 months).
Last week I updated several pacakges by hand (kernel, vlc, ...) : All updates that according to me didn't involve with systemd.
Then I rebooted and ... problem.
I have tried a whole weekend to solve it by browsing through the wiki's but to no avail.
I can boot with live-cd and access my SSD. All data is there. I can also chroot and do stuff.
The SSD is partitionned in GPT as follows :
sda1 : 1 gb fat 32
sda2 : 20 gb ext4 root
sda3 : 20 gb ext4 var
sda4 : 79 gb ext4 home
I did not do any update of my bios or changed anything on my hardware.
It seems that my bios does not see my SSD as UEFI-bootable device anymore.
When I installed Arch in June on my brand new computer I made a backup with redobackup (partclone) of a working installation.
As a final ressort I put back the image I created then.
But it doesn't work either!
Then I updated my bios but same problem.
My bios can see the fat 32 partition. I know this because to update the bios it looks for attached fat 32 storage and there is shows the partition .
I there anywone who can point me in a good direction?

I am sorry if I lost your confidence. I can't find any contradictory info in my post.
The Arch Wiki-Grub 2 says that you need to boot in UEFI before you can (re)install grub2.
As my live-cd won't boot in UEFI mode, the only option is that I make a live-usb stick and see if that one will boot in UEFI.
But in the end it is still strange that a software update breaks my Asus UEFI-boot.
I just found another unlucky guy with a simular problem. I'll try his solution tonight.

BIOS mode-UEFI or Legacy in Lenovo G580?

I have lenovo g580. in bios setup under boot tab, it says UEFI boot 'Enabled'. but when i go to cmd and type 'msinfo32', it says my system has LEGACY bios mode. what actually is it? if i have UEFI mode enabled, why it shows legacy in msinfo32? please help........

According to this FAQ, the UEFI BIOS has to emulate legacy BIOS so that existing applications aren't broken (this means 32bit programs since UEFI only works with 64bit versions of Windows). If you have UEFI enabled under BIOS and see it's saying Legacy under msinfo32, you probably have a Windows 7 system installed on legacy mode as the Lenovo G580 supports UEFI with an emulated Legacy.support.
To check if you have Windows installed on UEFI (GPT) or Legacy mode (MBR), check your drive volume:
1. Click Start, right-click Computer and then click Manage
2. On the Computer Management window, choose Disk Managemment
3. Right click on any of the Disk (i.e. Disk 1), choose Properties and on the Volumes tab, see Partition Style

GS70 Stealth Pro won't boot UEFI after setting up Raid 0

I just recently acquired a GS70 Stealth Pro, which came with only 1 128gb msata ssd. i picked up two more, put them in, for a total of 3 128gb ssd's, and have since enabled raid 0. upon doing so (and restoring an image i took with acronis) my laptop will now boot directly to BIOS when UEFI boot is on. If i change it to Legacy, the laptop boots fine, first to intel rapid storage, then to the OS. r/w speeds are around 1k and 500, and everything says that the raid volume is enabled. is there an issue with being on legacy instead of UEFI? and what exactly is the difference?

It seems like your system is installed under Legacy mode which doesn't allow you to boot up under UEFI mode.
You'll need to re-install the system under UEFI mode to do so. I'd suggest to use the MSI BurnRecovery to create the Recovery disks and recover the system under UEFI mode.
People share that the most obvious difference between Win8 Legacy and Win8 UEFI is the boot up time, but I've never tried it on the GS70 model.

Can't boot uefi usb windows 7 install

I have a MSI A55M-P33 FM1 motherboard and a 3tb hard-drive
I used a linux live usb to change the partition to gpt and now I need to boot my windows 7 usb stick in uefi so that it can recognize the gpt partition..
the usb stick wont boot when selecting it from the uefi boot menu....I can boot the same stick from the regular bios and install windows...but I lose about 800gb because of mbr limitations...
Is there anything special i need to do to the stick to get it to boot with uefi?

I can boot from the usb in bios mode....but int that mode...windows defaults to mbr mode and doesnt recognize the gpt disk... it forces an mbr format which is limited to 2.2 tb on my 3tb drive.
I need to boot into uefi mode so windows can recognize the gpt disk so i can install.
