Boot up problems and HD making strange noises.

Hi all, Our powerbook seems to be having trouble accessing the OS or the Hard Drive. Applications keep freezing, and restarts have become agonizingly slow [up to 10 minutes for the spinning gear]. The hard drive sounds like it's spinning inntermittently grinding approximatly 2-3 times a second. the boot up screen only showed a folder flashing a question mark and an OS logo alternatively. It wasn't until I lifted the powerbook and tilted it at some funny angle did the hard drive make a louder grinding noise and then the OS was slowly accessed.
This sounds like a physical problem with the hard drive, which doesn't make much sense since the powerbook rarely leaves the house or the table it sits on. Is there any advice that can be given regarding this issue?
Cheers
Iain

Iain,
Further advice:
After backing up your data, run, do not walk, to your favorite competent, friendly, neighborhood Apple repair shop. While your description points to catastrophic hard disk failure in the near future, there could be other causes... In any case, you need to consult a repair professional.

Hello my battery power has a x on it and the lights are not working and its making a noise - Please assist

The Battery icon with the "X" indicates that your computer does not detect a battery and is operating on electrical power from AC since your computer is plugged in. If your battery is installed but not detected that indicates a problem: 1. the battery is dead; 2. the battery connector is not functioning properly. You mention that there is no response from the indicator lights so it could be either of the two possibilities. The noise is not a good sign. Best to shut it down safely while you can to prevent any possibility of damage and get it to an Apple Genius Bar or Authorized Apple Service Provider to discover the nature of the problem

  • Macbook freezing, running slowly, and making strange noises

Hi. Just today my wife's MB froze while doing nothing more than playing music in iTunes. She had to leave so just closed the lid. When I opened the lid later, it came back from sleep eventually (playing the music), but was making an odd clicking noise. It sounded like it was coming from the upper right side under the keyboard. It didn't sound like the noises the optical drive usually makes, and there was no disc in it.
I left it charging, and when she came back to use it later, found that it was running really slow, taking forever to open applications (prolonged spinning pizza of death), and still making that strange noise. She restarted it twice, and the same thing occured after a reboot?
Any thoughts/suggestions? We have applecare, so we'll likely be giving them a call if it doesn't go away, but I like to check here first.

The same thing happened to my notebook last night, and I did some research. Apparently one of the reader arms in the harddrive separates from the drive and swings loose, digging gouges in the magnetic disk.
If it still boots, make sure you get all your un-backed-up information off of it before it crashes.
Mine is dead, and the only thing Apple can do is replace the drive.

  • Macbook Pro 15" right fan making strange noise

I have a mid 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, 2.3 Ghz with 8 GB of RAM running 10.9.4.  About 3 days ago it fell on to tile floor from about 10 inches off the ground and hit the floor at a 45 degree angle.  There was no damage except for a small scratch near and under the charging port.  Everything was working perfectly until a day ago when I noticed the right fan was making a strange high pitched humming noise.  It's very quiet, I can only hear it when there's no other noise but it is extremely irritating when I can hear it.  Other than the noise the fan works fine, it speeds up when when the computer gets hot, and in Temperature Monitor nothing gets hotter than it should be.  The computer works completely fine, but I'm wondering what could be making the noise.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • My macbook (2009) keeps making strange noises. What to do?

Yesterday, my macbook started to make strange noises. A little scratchy noise. Like there's somthing wrong with the Fan or something.
I called Apple Support, but they told me i had to reset the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM. I triend, but the noise is still there.
Does anyone know what to do?? Is it bad?
    Its a really annoying sound.

It could be the fan.....or the hard drive.....this is a link to a data recovery firm that has posted the various sounds made by failing hard drives.......
    datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php
......make sure your data is backed now in case the hard drive is failing.....

  • Mac Mini making strange noises through external speakers

I am experiencing a strange problem with my mac mini and my external speakers. I have two different sets of speakers and the problem occurs with both so I don't think its the speakers as I have never had any problems with them on my other computers. The Mini will make strange gurgling and hissing noises through the speakers at seemingly idle cpu times. Under heavy loads I get the gurgle occasionally but it seems more prevalent at idle times. After playing around with it I have noticed a direct correlation with my wireless connection and the noise. If the mini drops the network, which it does from time to time, I get the noises but if I disable airport then they stop. Have any other mini users experienced this? It's harmless but rather annoying because my mini is set up in my dorm room and we often have music playing and when I go to sleep I hear these weird noises.
Thanks for the feedback in advance.

The Airport sub-system in the mini is identical to any other Airport Extreme equipped Mac, with the addition of a riser board on which the AE card is mounted, and which no other Mac has.
If the mini suffered a design flaw in Airport implementation, then everyone would be hearing the same sound. Neither AE-eqipped minis I've got in my system exhibit any sign of it.
RF interference can get into an audio system in a number of ways - most commonly by direct injection (ie, something in the audio circuit such as a circuit board track or speaker wire) acting as an antenna and picking up an unwanted signal, or by FR breakthrough into the power circuit - usually through the transformer or rectifiers. In the first instance, a change in channel would change the transmission frequency and thus the sensitivity of the component to the signal (thus usually making it stop altogether) and in the second, would usually require a transmission power of significantly higher level than the few milliwatts used by Airport.
There are other possible causes too of course. Even a cordless phone in the same vicinity is capable of generating RF interference - but then stories of people listening to radio stations breaking through into phone lines, and even when opening oven doors are legion - and often true.
In the case of an Airport network, where the user has control over transmission power levels and frequency, a bit of tinkering with the two can resolve many FR interference issues. Incidentally, if you're interested (given your general technical background) a number of very informative sources on RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) are published for and by the amateur radio fraternity.

  • IMac Making Strange Noise

Over the past few weeks, my year and a half old iMac9,1 has been making a strange sound. It's kind of like a clicking/buzzing/whirling noise. It's coming from the lower right corner of the computer. I can't tell if it's the fan or something else. It doesn't sound much like a fan. I've tried resetting the SMC, but that hasn't worked. It hasn't affected my computer speed...yet. The sound starts the second i wake it up and stops the second i put it in sleep mode. It gets louder and softer as I use the computer, and sometimes will stop for a little while. I'm just trying to figure out of this is something serious or not. I'm hoping this is something that can be fixed at my house, so i don't have to lug the thing to a Genius bar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
According to iStat the fans are running at:
    Optical Drive 1348 rpm
    Hard Drive 1599 rpm
    CPU Fan 1198 rpm

I have exactly the same problem, - this seems to be an issue of the first revision of these early 2009 iMac9,1 series.
Reseting SMC and every other doesn't help anything. Fortunately my iMac is under Apple-Care warranty.
It was now for three times in repair, - at last they changed the mainboard / logicboard. This has worked for a while (4 weeks). But now it started to make heavy noise again.
All very frustrating... Seems to be the harder issue than the infamous "iMac vertical line" symptom at the 17" iMac. If you have no Apple-Care you can throw the iMac away, - the repair cost will be more than $1000.-
Well, will bring the iMac a fourth time to repair, - will see what's happen...

  • Ipod touch making strange noises

My ipod touch (4th gen) is making a clicking/grinding noise when I am listening to pandora and try to go into the bump app. Is this a problem with the pandora or bump app or my ipod? Is it a hard drive problem? What can I do to fix this? I already tried restarting the ipod several times, sounds still occurs. But it ONLY occurs when I'm listening the the Pandora app and enter the Bump app (which turns off pandora) then I press play (on my headphones) and the noise is back. I'm really confused, what should I do?

Pandora is not a faulty app. This might be a problem with the ipod touch itself. Try resetting by holding the home button and the sleep/wake button for up to 15 seconds until the apple logo appears. If that doesn't work try doing a restore.
A restore will delete all data from your ipod touch and return it to it's factory conditions but I can almost guarantee that it will fix your problem. I suggest you make a backup file for your ipod touch before doing this.
To restore your ipod touch follow these steps:
    1. Connect your ipod touch to your computer and open iTunes if not already open.
    2. Select your ipod touch from devices section of the source pane and open the summary tab if not already open
    3.  Under the version section of the summary, click on the restore button. An alert will pop up asking if you really want to do this. To affirm click restore.
    4. The restore process has now started.
Now with your ipod touch restored you can re-sync and Pandora should now work.

  • Skipping Problem and Ipod acting Strange

I brought an Ipod Video 30GB in march 2006
Recently it has started having the following problems
*it started freezing up in the middle of playing.
*It has also stopped loading tracks. It'll bring up the screen for the next track, sit there for a couple seconds with the track on 0:00 and then go on to the next track (without playing it either, on and on).
*The drive emits strange whirring sounds like a Hard disk being struck or like a CD drive trying to read a faulty CD but of course on a smaller scale
*sometimes when i try to switch it on it freezes with the apple icon
*it gets struck in the middle of a song and keeps continously replaying the little bit over and over again
I've been restarting it four or five times a day at work, mostly for the freezes. After a restart, it's good for an hour or two, then POW.
I have tried every trick in the book, like updating, resetting, formatting and restoring
I tried taking it to the apple service centre and they claim there is nothing wrong.
Now what am i to do???
Should i sell it off and buy a new one or can this problem be solved??

If you bought the ipod new in march, it should still have its warrenty, so it shouldn't cost anything to fix, just have to pay 29 US dollars for shipping and handeling, soory don't know how much it is in india

  • I need help with my iPod. It's making strange noises. Can I get some help?

I just got this brand new 160gb from the Apple Store. When I got home, I put all of my music and tv shows on it. When I started to use it, it started to make a buzzing noise, then a clicking noise, and then a noise that sounds like "pewwww" like it's powering down.
I was wondering if putting all that music and stuff on was too fast too soon. The "Genius" at the Apple store said it was a problem with the hard drive.
    Thank you in advance.

I believe them. I was just wondering if the noises are something that will eventually go away with use. Something else I wanted to know is if putting ALL my music and other media on the iPod at one time is what did it.

  • Disc drive making strange noises

Whenever I insert my Sims 3 disc (haven't tried with other discs) my drive does one of the following:
    1. Starts making a worrying noise, as if the top of the disc was being rubbed against a brush, and takes FOREVER to load (and eventually spits it out anyway)
    2. Makes a 'bo-bo-BEEP' noise repetitively, and doesn't eject the disk, even when I press eject.
This has only been happening for half an hour, but it still worries me. And worse yet, you need a disc to play The Sims! This is the third time I've had a disc drive that stopped working for no reason, but usually I can fix it. Not this time though...

    iiiiitsacoolguy wrote:
Whenever I insert my Sims 3 disc (haven't tried with other discs)
Try another disc and see what happens.  Or is the Sims 3 disc stuck?  If it is, try this to eject it:
If the drive does not eject discs use the F12 or eject key on the keyboard.
If the disc will not eject try dragging the disc icon to the trash.
If the disc will still not eject, holding down the trackpad or mouse button after restarting the computer should also eject a disc.
If the disc continues not to eject, reset the Power Manager (PMU) or System Management Controller (SMC) and try steps 1-4 again.

  • Help with Apple Error Code & Intermitant Boot Up Problems and ? marks

Well that was a long winded Subject line but I am a technical individual ... but know PC's and learn the Mac world which I have fallen in love with.
Recently I have been getting lock up as well as hanging boot ups with the flashing question mark on the screen.
I have been doing some research and one of the most recent things I did was run the Apple Hardware Test. During the quick test I received the following erro message:
    4M0T/ 40000003: HDD
I am feeling like this likely a hard drive problem but not certain. I was trying to find what this error code meant and havent any luck yet so I thought I would try and post here. If I could find the error codes it woul dbe helpful. But if you have any ideas please help me out.
I have had session lock up where I can not do anything but move the mouse, totally frozen sessions, as well as boot ups.
One of the things I did earlier was run the TechTools System Tools that came with my Imac. It said everything was fine. So confused with what is wrong.

For an iMac 24 inch (Early 2008) 3.06 GHz machine, the 4MOT error code* indicates a fan issue, and recommends that a technician…
    • shut down, the power back on and retest the machine
    • verify that the fan speed indicator is not a zero value (yours is reporting a 3)
Without special tools and substantial experience, and because doing so would require opening your machine and thereby invalidating its existing warranty, they indicate that a technician should…
    • verify that the fan blades are not obstructed by cables, tape or other obstacles
    • verify that the fans are properly connected to the logic board and rotate when the machine is started
    • if the problem persists, replace the fans and retest the machine
    • if it still persists, replace the logic board
While HDD is a commonly used abbreviation for hard disk or hard drive, there is no Apple Hardware Test error indicator for a hard drive for this particular platform, and yours does not relate to one based upon that AHT result. While there may be a sensor issue in play, AHT does not report a sensor issue in your case.
You may wish to run the SMART diagnostics against your drive to see if it indicates an impending failure, but what you report is limited strictly to fan operation. You should take your covered machine into a dealer or service provider in order to have it tested and repaired under warranty.
*NOTE: these error codes are often non-unique, and can mean very different things from one model series to another, and—within one product family—from one specific machine type to another.
