My MBP after the Lion upgrade takes 1 minute to put something usable on screen and without doing anything else the HD is active for another minute.
I have visited the Genius bar where they went through some maintenance routines and permissions repaired etc but the boot up time remains the same.
I have cleared the cache as suggested in other threads but is this the best I can expect as with SL the computer booted up in about 30 seconds ?
I recall reading there may be unwanted programs loading at boot up time but I do not know where to look in the system to check.Thanks for the reply, I have followed your suggestion but unfortunately it has not improved the boot time, do you have any further advice you could offer me ?
I use my MBP for working on and storing my photographic images following my Photoshop adjustments, these individual image files are between 50 to 60Mb, I was reading about OSX self defragmenting files below 20Mb, these files are not intended as start up items but do you think storing approx 200Gb of these files could be having so effect ? I am a fromt end user so my limited knowledge is restricted to repairing permissions etc. I am probably clutching at straws but it be better to store these images on an external HD in addition to my backups on other HD's.

I shoul add that the MBPS was plugged into surge protector at the time but there is a noticeable seven seconds added to the normal boot up time and the grey wheel does not appear when booting up.
as to why it happens - could be any number or reasons - got changed by mistake if you booted holding the options key, could be just a simple bug or when you restarted your macbook when it locked up on you or it could've been that power outage you mentioned when your SSD was busy doing something...
it doesn't happen often and when it does - now you know where to go...

IMac 24" freezes on boot about 50% of the time
My iMac freezes on bootup about 50% of the time. The freeze occurs prior to getting to the login password screen (the screen is blue when the Mac freezes). Holding down the power button to hard-shutdown the Mac works, and then typically on the next boot, the Mac does not freeze. I noticed that when it does finally finish booting correctly, the Boot Camp partitioned drive takes a long time restore to the desktop ... about a solid minute or two longer than when Finder finishes loading.
The problem has been going on for months, but seems to be getting worse. Using Disk Utility identifies NO errors on either the Mac or Windows boot partitions.
I have the OS up to date with all the latest patches.HI David,
Go to System Preferences/Account. Click: Login Items. If you have applications listed there to launch on boot, for now, delete them and reboot and see if that makes a difference.
Try maintenance. Mac OS X: How to force background maintenance tasks (logs and temporary items)
Go to System Preferences/Software Updates. Click Scheduled Check then click: Check Now
Make sure your Mac software is up to date. If you install and updates, make sure and run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions after the updates are installed. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.
How much available disk space is there? Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data. Not enough available disk space can slow a drive down considerably.

Macbook Pro not Booting Properly 50% of the time.
I have a 3 year old Macbook Pro 13.3 Inch that I use for school. However over the course of the last 6 months it has begun to only boot up fully into OSX Lion about half of the time. The other 50% of the time it "freezes" during boot up and although I can move the mouse around the home screen, I cannot do anythign else besides do a forced shut down and reboot by holding the power button. Everything LOOKS like it loads except my IDISK icon, If the IDISK does not show up, then I know the computer did not fully boot, Howver If i can see my IDISK on my desktop, the computer is fully booted and works fine. Ive looked online for others having this same problem, and I have done a full wipe and reinstall from my time capsule with no luck, same problem. I have not found any threads like this and the guys at the Genius Bar had no idea how to correct it, any ideas?
Do I need to completely wipe the drive and partition and start with a fresh copy of LION that is NOT from my time capsule? If I do that can I retrieve certain things off of time capsule?
Any ideas would be helpful, the computer runs perfectly except for only booting 50% of the time.

My system boots normally only half the time

I've been trying to properly boot all day and nothing has worked.
Symptom:
Boots to a blue screen no pinwheel or anything.
It froze while working, the pinwheel and everything froze. So I turned it of and on. Now it won't boot normally. The only thing that was open at the time was Firefox and Entourage.
It was actually booting normal randomly. For example out of 6 different start ups only the 1st and 3rd startup actually arrived at the login
What I have tried:
1 Repairing permissions (using Tiger install disc)
2 Repairing disk (it had a minor error)
3 Trashing the following files in single user mode as described in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411?viewlocale=en_US
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
The result was that everytime I booted I arrived at the blue screen. So, I no longer had a random successful boot. I replaced the files and the random success returned.
4 Basically I tried every step in the above knowledge base, except the OS 9 options (I don't ahve OS9), updating the firmware (I believe it is up to date), with no success.
5 I restarted without the network cable connected. I thought this helped at first because it did start up but it continued to have random success while the cable wasn still not connected.
6 I even renamed the entire preferences folder as described in the above link without success.
It appears I'm running out of things to try but I haven't yet reinstalled the system, but I'm trying to avoid it.
Any suggestions?

This is where I'm at.
I did ANOTHER archive and install. Boot to blue screen, but I just let it sit in the blue screen while I did other stuff for about 15-20 minutes.
I shut it down and it booted properly! But gave me an error saying OSX unexpectedly quit upon login.
I shutdown properly and it boots to blue again.
An interesting note is that if I leave it a while in the blue the funs really start going. This didn't happen the time before it booted correctly...
I'm not sure what to make of all this. Any suggestions?

I've tried unplugging everything but it hasn't helped. Sometimes get an error message saying it was not turned off properly. Operating system is 10. something - not sure without turning it on!

Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.) -

aid everything was ok, with no warnings.
found somewhere a link to a hardware test code list, that said 9972 could be the cable (ribbon?) to the drive needed to be reset, replaced, or the harddrive replaced.
our local New Orleans 'official' Apple Tech guy calimed it was the harddrive and not worth replacing. he whined that it would take hours, tho the guys on ifixit claimed only half an hour.
i have since got a refurb MacBook (even older it turns out) with Tiger, but I miss my 15 incher Powerbook. (on very tight budget)
the battery got zapped by lightning last year and have struggled with it ever since. it won't fully recharge.
Right now have got it on the AC without the battery to try to charge the backup battery.
I have managed to restore it several times after crashing, inspite of my tech guy claiming otherwise. but have never really opened it up besides just looking at the memory slots. just one filled with 512 card.
so any advice, or suggestions.

Firstly, you have a backup. Kudos.
Secondly, i suspect the hard drive in the machine is more than just a few years old. Hard drives die. I suspect the hard drive is the issue, not the cable.
Thirdly, it is worth changing the hard drive and take the ifixit advice. Simple to change. If it will be your first time changing the hard drive, just be organized and follow the steps carefully.
Now, before we decided it is the hard drive we need to confirm this.
I would check if SMART reports favorable conditions for the drive. Disk utility can tell you.
If good then I would zero out the drive. This allows the drive to excercise every sector and will build confidence of a well prepared drive going forward.
You can then restore from backup.
The other option is to replace the internal HD with a new one, perhaps with more storage.
As an FYI, I replaced the drive on my powerbook G3 and it's faster, quite , has more storage and gives me some peace of mind. Worth the money. The little guy runs beautifully.

Hello, I'm pretty sure my fan on my 2009 mac book pro has stopped running. Would this cause the computer to slow down and take for ever to boot up and show the color wheel every time I select an application ? how involved to replace fan ? cost ?
thanksNot directly, but if the CPU overheats because of incompatible software, that would cause slowdowns. Do not allow the computer to run if the fan is not working unless you wish to fry your motherboard. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

If it is one year old minus one day it is still under warranty. If it is more than a year since you purchased it then yes, the warranty has expired.
Millions of iPads have been sold. Most continue to function long after their warranty has expired. Check the many requests about updating the iOS on the original iPad on these forums and you'll see that there are many iPads still working after three years. My iPad 2, which I had for over two years is still working well for my son in law who took it over from me when I bought a new one.
Given that there will always be a few iPads that fail early. Most of those will be covered under warranty. But some will fail after the warranty has expired and before the owner expected it to. I'm sorry to hear that you are in this category. Take your iPad to an Apple store and have it looked at. They will provide you with alternatives, one of which is to purchase a like model to the one that failed at a discount. You can then know your options and make the best choice for you. -

Is there a way to hook up both a blutooth mouse and keybord to the Playbook at the same time? If so how?
I have an E-Bay Cheap mouse (Speedlink) and a PCWorld cheap keyboard (Advent) both connected at the same time.
These both connected at the same time when first installed - but on subsequent connections one is required to be deleted and re-added.
Have you tried connecting one, deleting the other and then re-pairing? -

This will vary depending on what HDD/SSD option any system has been specked to, whether from apple or upgraded afterwards (depending on upgradable model)
I have a late 2011 2.4 i5 13" upgraded to 16Gb ram and a Samsung 840 Pro SSD and my install of Mavericks boots in around 15 seconds. This is actually about the same as my 2008 core2duo macbook booted snow leopard with a Samsung 840 (non pro)
You may find a system with less ram actually boots marginally quicker, but this would be marginal. -
I'm not completely tech savvy, but I'm having troubles with my external memory & time machine. I'm a student, and thus its very important to me to be able to back up my computer.
I wanted to back up my Time Machine the other day. I clicked the icon at the top of the page (beside the battery icon, etc.) and the message "The backup disk is not available". My macbook pro is version 10.7.5 Mac OS X Lion. My external memory is only about a year old. It hasn't been dropped or anything; it permanently sits secured to my desk.
What appears when I click "Repair Disk":

I don't want to wipe my memory on my external disk just in case the disk doesn't restore (as I do not have another disk to back up my computer on to).
What is going on? Why is this happening out of the blue? How can I fix this?Sounds like it either has, or is about to die.
If you don't need anything off the old drive, then yes, replace it immediately with something a little more reolaable. I use WD Caviar Black personally. But anything that has a known low failure rate.
