Boot with rescue CD ??

HI!
I have installed the last Solaris 8 recommended Patch-Cluster. The installation on my SUN Blade 150 takes a long time, and I had problems at the Patch with the ID 108528-29. This patch needed more than 5 hours and so i stopped the installation and continue in the patchlist.
Now, if I boot the workstation it falls to the OK prompt. Clear, the Kernel is defekt.
Now my question: Can I boot with a solaris-rescue CD or something like this and how could I repair the system??
thx a lot!
stewen

Hi!
I defeated it :-)
1)I have booted with Solaris 8 Installations-CD from OK-Prompt
OK> boot cdrom -s
2) mount filesystems / and /var (e.g.)
# mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /a
# mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s5 /a/var
3) install kernel-patch again
# patchadd -R /a /a/<path-to-patch-dir>/108528-29
# reboot
And now it works!
Thx- Danke!

  • Dv2941se hard disk no boot with error Err2Err3

On my dv2941se laptop with AMD 64 x2 TK-57,4096MB total Memory Bios versionF.26 Running Vista 64 bit home premium.
When I turn on to boot  I get the HP screen with function keys and then goes to black screen with cursor in upper left corner. When boot with esc I get  memory passed, System Bios shadowed, Videobios shadowed, ATAPI CD ROM: HL_DT_ST DVD RAM GSA-T2ON, Fixed disk 0 Samsung HM250JI, Mouse initialized, and then full black screen and Err2Err3 appears in upper left corner and that's as far as the show goes. Will not boot any further no matter how long it's on. Any key I touch will repeat this error. When I boot up with my backup CD to perform an image backup which has been done up to the point that I can't boot anymore shows on the hardware screen that my hard disk C: is full. The D: drive that has the rescue for Vista and the small X:sector for boot looks like the number of sectors has not changed. Since this is OEM Vista I have no way to access C; in order to do a file check, or reformat is out. I cannot copy my latest backup because all sectors are written and the backup bombs. Not that familiar with Vista, is there anything I can do from here? I have no idea what is on each of the included 17 "installation "disks or will the last link of emergency " restore to factory conditions" (last resort) even going to work or has my hard disk turned to toast? I was doing a Microsoft software update at the time that this happened. I am on landline so it takes hours to do an update and I just let it run overnight to load the upgrades if it is more than 5MB in size. Phone line will give me 1.96 KB/sec. Someone please let me know how deep a dilemma I am in and how to possibly dig myself free. Thanks in advance.

  • Boot into Rescue and Recovery but not Windows

Everytime my pc is powered on or restarted, it boots into Rescue and Recovery, but not Windows.
    What can I do?

    Hi,
first I would like to explain one thing, so that we are on the same page with the RnR partition.
Vista and XP are using different RnR partitions and the location of these aprtitions is placed on the HDD is different way, so that it can be used in conjuction with your Operating system.
So in the time, where you have used the XP and OS, the RnR partition was placed in the partition table on the end/back. DIrectly after you upgraded to the Vista and did not made any changes to the RnR partition, than it is still on the end/back, which is not the corect way. Becase the Vista should use the RnR partition, that should be placed on the begind/start/in the front of all the other partitions.
So in case there was no change made to the RnR partition, like relocation, or reinstall using the Vista RnR version, then you will not be able to boot into it.
So here is what I would advice you to do:
    - reinstall, or download and install the Vista version of RnR (the latest version) => this will rewrite the partition table and in case of need it will create the RnR partition.
    - use bmgr32.exe , which is located on your HDD by default to rewrite the partition table. Please start it from command line in follwing way:
    bmgr32.exe /phil
==> this will bring you all the command line options and you can use it based on this.
    NOTE:
Plase note, that once you captured some backups using the XP version of RnR , or a different version of RnR, then it's not possible to restor the backups using a different version.
Simple: you must use the exact same version of RnR for backup and also for the  restore process.
Let me know, if you have any more informations to this situation.
    Cheers

  • Kernels 3.10.6 and 3.10.7 fail to boot with EFI stub

Been using rEFInd for some time now. Current installed version is 0.7.1. Kernels 3.10.5 and earlier would boot without incident. Yesterday I upgraded to 3.10.6 and boot failed. As a workaround, I copied the Liquorix kernel and initramfs from my Kubuntu partition; to my mild surprise, this worked. My next test was to install the 3.10.7 Zen kernel from heftig's repository. This kernel boots fine (I added a version number string to the name of the kernel image and the initramfs so that rEFInd would automatically match them). After that, I enabled Arch testing and updated the Arch kernel to 3.10.7; this also fails to boot just like the 3.10.6 kernel did.
I'm a fan of boot text, so I've configured rEFInd in text mode only. Here's my refind.conf, with almost no changes from defaults:
    timeout 20
    textonly 1
    use_graphics_for
    scan_all_linux_kernels
    And my /boot/refind_linux.conf:

Steve, your picture is far too large for these forums.  You are going to want to put it in some kind of a picture sharing/hosting site and link back to it.  Otherwise it will end up disappeared (likely via black magic) from your post.  I don't think that it provides any useful information anyway.  If you want to post your kernel command line that is great.  But posting a picture of a frozen screen with no output... doesn't really do much good.
Efistub has been a bit shaky since 3.6 actually.  There is a monster thread about this already, the title of which references 3.6, but the content continues on through several kernel releases.  Still people continually report this as being an issue.  What I do is I keep a normal efi bootloader (one that doesn't rely on efistub) at the ready all the time.  My choice was elilo, but since [testing] started including syslinux-efi in the syslinxu package, I have started using that... though I still have elilo set up.
Can you boot with efistub from the UEFI Shell or gummiboot?  I prefer gummiboot, but I have had this problem in the past, and when I did, I was able to boot with rEFInd... which was strange.  Some people even report that simply having a direct efibootmgr entry in their firmware causes it to magically work.  Though there should be to reasonable explanation for this, it was confirmed by several people in the mentioned thread.

  • T61 Boots to "Rescue and Recovery

I'm a desktop support tech working on an issue with a T61 that has started booting to Rescue and Recovery every time it is booted on a docking station.  It seems fine when off the doc.   I booted several times off the doc and it boots normally.  I booted several times on the doc and it goes to Rescue and Recovery.
Any help with a fix would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hi, blank white screen where exactly?
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

  • Problem with Rescue and Recovery after installing Norton Internet Security 2010

    Hi all.
It's my first time in this forum.
I have a problem, with Rescue and Recovery, after installing Norton Internet Security 2010 on my T43.
    The message I get it:
"Rescue and Recovery is unable to back up the file 'C:\Documents and settings\all Users\Application Data\ Norton\ 00000082\00000109\000003c1\cltMLS1.bat' Because the file is either corrupted or being used by another application. Please close any application that could be using the file.
I tried to close the Norton but I couldn't find how.
    Tanks

Hi and welcome to the forum,
the reason for this situation is, that the antivir files are protected from being modified.
This is the reason, why this file cannot be backed up. I assume, that you would get much more such messages, as there are surelly multiple files files, that are protected like this.
So the solution is to block folders from being archived. Please start RnR application and in the configuration set this folder as the excluded one.
This will skip the backup of this file and will fix your situation.
Please let me know, if you have covered this.
    Cheers

Give your previous partition layout, you cannot install Windows via Bootcamp, unless you are willing to give up all your extra partitions and go back to EFI, OS X and RecoveryHD only configuration.

    1. Windows installer will not work and you will end up with driver issues.
    2. No.
    3. You cannot, but if you could, the Apple Bootmanager would be your Boot Manager/Loader.

  • K8N Neo fails to boot with more than one DIMM

I have been searching the forums for a while now, and will continue, but I am really hoping for a quick resolution.  My system was running fine for over a year with a pair of PC3200 512MB DIMMs.  I normally leave my computer on all the time.  Recently I updated my BIOS to 2.10, and the system performed a soft boot afterwards.  Christmas Eve day I knew I was going to be gone the whole day and probably not need my computer until late on Christmas day.  I received a very unpleasant surprise.
I attempted to boot the computer up, and I got nothing but a repeating single long beep.  I did a lot of troubleshooting and discovered that the system will boot and run fine with ONE DIMM, either DIMM.  My system will no longer boot with a second DIMM in either the 2 or 3 DIMM slots.  This is a major bummer for me, please help.
I have not played around much with memory timings and such as of yet.  It is quite a pain to put in a single DIMM, and boot the system to make a BIOS change then shut it down again and install the second DIMM to see if it works.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Scott

Go back to your previous BIOS.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot with new hard drive, but a different MacBook Pro will

So here are the details. My friend and I both have 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro's. Same processor and specs since they were purchased at the same time, but originally had 250 GB hard drives. His hard drive failed and needed a new one. Put a 500 GB Seagate Momentus 5400.6 in his computer, and tried using a flash drive with "Install OS X Mavericks" on it to install Mavericks on his new hard drive. No matter what, it wouldn't install. I finally was able to install OS X 10.9.4 on it by connecting the new hard drive to my computer with a USB hard drive enclosure. I put the hard drive back inside his computer and it wouldn't boot (stuck on the gray screen with apple logo and a spinning wheel). I then attached to the hard drive to his computer externally with the USB enclosure, and then it booted and worked perfectly.
So, it seemed like the problem was with something inside his computer, but then I switched our drives, and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I put my original hard drive into his computer, and his new hard drive into my computer, and they both booted and worked perfectly, so I have no idea why his computer will not boot with the new hard drive internally.
To summarize, his computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally (won't work if it's internal), and 2) my hard drive internally
but my computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally AND internally, and 2) my hard drive internally.
Both hard drives have OS X 10.9.4 installed
If anyone has any idea what's causing this and how to make his computer work with the new hard drive internally that would be greatly appreciated.

So after switching the internal SATA cables from each computer, now we have
His computer, with my SATA cable:
    1) Worked with every hard drive!
My computer, with his SATA cable:
    1) Works with 1 TB Toshiba hard drive
    2) Works with 500 GB Seagate hard drive
    3) Works with my original hard drive
    4) Flashing folder with question mark with his old hard drive
So it turns out you were right! Definitely had something to do with the SATA cables. But it's still strange that mine was able to boot with all the hard drives except the one that was originally in his. So it seems like it was some combination of his SATA cable and something else, since when his SATA cable was in his computer only 1 hard drive (my original) worked, and when it was in my computer, 3 hard drives worked. But at least its working, and I'm just gonna keep our SATA cables switched since that seems to work out fine

  • Z68A-GD55 G3 -- how do you get it to boot with 4 DIMMs installed?

    Howdy folks,
I am really hoping that someone here can enlighten me on this magical BIOS setting that allows you to boot this unit up with all 4 DIMM slots populated?  I have scoured the dark corners of the interwebz trying to figure this out and it completely eludes me, I even read the manual cover to cover... all I can find is a couple posts where people have updated the bios or went into the bios and changed a setting allowing them to escape the reboot loop that I get with all four memory slots filled.... the unit boots just fine with two DIMMs installed and it doesn't matter which two... I found this on a post but nothing else:
"One more thing, it wouldn't boot with four RAM-sticks out of the box, but it worked fine to start with only 2 RAM-sticks and use F1 to change bios-settings. After doing it that it had no problem with 4 RAM-sticks."
Take from: Google search "Z68A-GD55 megathread" since I can't post external links, the author of the article is "the Squonk"
    Any one encounter this before?
    Thanks in advance,

  • HP Envy 700-430qe DT CTO - - - Trying to dual boot with Windows 7

                                                                                                       HELP HELP HELP
I know how to set up double boot for several different HP computers, based mostly from what I have learned in this great forum, but this one has me stumped.
I have been trying to install Windows 7 on this computer to double boot with Windows 8.1. I have tried to set the bios up correctly, enabled legacy, disabled secure boot, disabled fast boot. I booted under UEFI  to get in to GPT mode, still no luck at all.
The installation always goes all the way through the first 4 steps and through most of the 5th.  After the reboot in the 5th step, it stops and can not go any further. A message appears without any error code.
I think it may be a problem in this computers UEIF  settings, but I do not know if anymore of them to try.
I can use all the help you all can offer.
    Thank, Brad
PS, If we ever get this to work, then I will have to ask you where to find drivers for this model, if they exist!

    Hi Brad,
According to the information that you posted you have a W8 delivered PC.
If the graphics card in your PC can run in legacy mode then you should be OK.
I suggest that you use a separate HP for W7 as you will probably run into partition placement issues when you try to install W7 to the same HD. Installation to the same HD is not impossible but you will have to remove some partitions such as the recovery partition and then resize the "C" partition to make room for W7. You should be able to use Disk Management to delete partitions and resize the "C" partition.
Be sure to create the external HP recovery media as it will be needed. Backup your data to separate external media. You should also consider installing the HP diagnostics to an external flash drive.
Boot in the BIOS and set the BIOS to legacy mode and fast boot off.  Save the changes on exit.
Now boot up the external recovery media (don't select the EFI media if shown) and reload your PC with W8.
If your PC boots up and runs OK then you should be good to load W7.
If you are using a separate HD for W7 then unplug the original HD.  If you don't then W7 will install a boot manager to the primary HD.

Dozens of reports in this forum over the past year.
Keep in mind that by "not working" what was meant was that the startup keys wouldn't work. The Alu keyboard otherwise works fine with the Mini.
It has also been reported that the Alu Keyboard does work for startup keys if it is plugged into a hub with an external power supply.

Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
