Bootable backup install on Mac Intel?

I have two questions about creating a backup boot disk I can carry with me. The first is the exact process, but the second is that each time I try it, I discover that the Install Disk 1 is 4.8 GB but DVD's are 4.7, so I run out of space. I need to know what I can delete or is there some other way around this? Many thanks.

You can exclude the Developers Tools.
To make the disk "Bootable" you have to burn it with Disk Utility -> Convert -> Image format -> DVD/CD Master
Best Regards.

The Adobe knowledgebase on this error doesn't seem relevant.
    What to do now?

I had the same problem - mine was because of the
adminconfig.xml doesn't properly update once the install was done.
Go into your Coldfusion 8 folder. Then go into folder named
"lib" - then open adminconfig.xml. In the xml, you will see this
    <runsetupwizard>true</runsetupwizard> but it should be
    this
    <runsetupwizard>false</runsetupwizard> (since
there is no need for a runsetupwizard once it is installed
    already).
You should be good to go then.

  • Creating a bootable backup for upgrade to Lion

I've read some articles and watched some videos on how to create a disk of my drive from the disk utility. Is that a good way to create a bootable backup of my Mac Mini? I also want to have all my applications transferred over to Lion, though I know how to do that in the installation of the OS. But I want a fresh install over Snow Leopard and reinstall my apps from that bootable disk, again is that possible? If this can work, how can I know for sure if the backup works?

    Spinland wrote:
Then what CSound1 said: use CCC to clone your drive to another disk for safekeeping, then install Lion and enjoy. All of your apps will still be there after the upgrade.
Have you checked to make sure your apps are Lion compatible? This guide can help you find out:
    http://fairerplatform.com/2011/07/are-your-apps-lion-compatible-how-to-check/
    Hi Spinland
That is not what I said exactly ......
1 Clone the SL (internal) to the external.
2 Boot from the external and install Lion on it.
3 Run Lion from the clone until you know it works (and you can identify any incompatible apps).
4 Clone the Lion external back to the internal.
    5 You're done.

  • Bootable backup?

I am trying to create a bootable backup of my mac hard drive.  I attached a USB hard drive to my mac mini 2012.  Then I GUID partitioned it, cloned my internal drive to the external (using carbon copy cloner), and confirmed all the data made it over.  Then I set the external drive as the bootable drive and restarted; but it still booted from the internal drive.  I have retried mulitple times with the same result.  I have also tried holding down the option key while restarting but the computer does not give me the option of rebooting from the external drive.  Is there something I am missing?
    I have confirmed the following:
    1.  The hard drive dock is bootable to the mac (voyager S3 from macsales.com)
    2.  The hard drive is readable from the mac
    3.  The hard drive is partitioned to GUID format
    4.  Selected the external drive as the boot drive from inside mac os.
Can anyone think of anything else?

As a quick test you can try installing OS X to the external drive to try booting to a fresh installation. If this works then try another cloning approach. It is likely you might have an odd setting or two in Carbon Copy Cloner that might be the problem here. While not the best option, you can use Disk Utility's "restore" feature to clone the boot drive to an external drive.

  • Bootable Backup on Intel Macs?

I read this on the internet. Has anyone checked this out?
A Bootable Backup for an Intel Mac
Shortly after I got my shiny new 20″ Intel iMac I read in a forum somewhere that booting from an external firewire enclosure was no longer supported on the Intel-based Macs. I was disappointed to hear this, because I’ve used this feature on my PowerMac in the past to great advantage, it makes upgrading your system hard drive very easy, and the same would apply to recovering from a hard drive failure.
I decided to try anyway, so I connected my IoGear Ion external firewire drive to my iMac and started a disk cloning operation using Carbon Copy Cloner, a very popular Mac backup program that works well on my PowerPC based Macs. It kept asking for my Admin password, and it eventually locked up without having finished the backup.
Then I tried LaCie Silverkeeper with no luck either.
Next I bought a shareware license for a program called ChronoSync, which seems to be well written, but also failed at the task of creating a bootable system backup. In a later email exchange with the author of that program I was told that kind of an operation was “not supported”.
Finally I tried Synchronize! Pro X from Qdea, it worked. In only 3 hours it copied 182gb of data across a firewire connection to my external drive, and the OS X Startup Disk preference pane saw the disk as bootable. I’ve done a test boot, and it worked flawlessly.
I like to keep a mirror image backup of all of my computers. It has saved my cookies (literally and figuratively) on more than one occasion. I did have to pay $99 for a license for Synchronize! Pro X, but I consider it to be money well spent.

Well... If you are using CCC, the only way to use it to restore would be to start up from the bootable backup and run CCC from there. Unlike Disk Utility, CCC can clone the disk being used for startup; Disk Utility want the "source" disk to not be "busy." On the other hand, if you are using Disk Utility from the Mac OS Installation Disk, the backup does not need to be bootable. The backup can even be a disk image, which has the advantage of not occupying the entire external drive.
A bootable backup has several advantages. First, running from an optical disk is slow if you are going to be making backups at regular intervals; I'm not sure if want to boot from the Mac OS X Installation Disk so often. Second, the bootable backup will serve as an emergency boot disk to diagnose problems that you may have with the internal drive. If you buy tools like DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro, you can run them from there.
If you want a full identical copy of the internal drive, the following would be ideal... Get an external drive that is larger than the internal drive. Partition it so that it is bootable for Intel and with TWO partitions. Make the first partition about equal in size to the internal drive (it can be somewhat smaller since you will never fill the internal drive to 100%). Make the second partition the rest of the space.
Use CCC to make regular backups of the internal drive to the bootable second partition. As an added precaution, copy just your user directory to the second partition and keep it in sync with the one on the internal drive. You can do this manually, or with a tool like ChronoSync. Why the second user data backup? Because during the time when you are using CCC to clone the internal drive to the first partition, there is risk. At that moment, the previous backup is gone, the new backup is being written, and the "original" is actively being accessed. If there was a internal hard drive failure, or a power failure, you could lose the original and not have a backup. But if you have that user data backup on the second partition, at least you did not lose what's most important. Though inconvenient, you can always spend a day reinstalling the OS and apps from scratch.

If you have a Mid 2010 model: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If later then see below:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you have an earlier model:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 Start up disk preference   Internal bootable backup

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro 5,1 running yosemite. My OS is installed on a PCIe SSD and I am trying to make a bootable backup of the OS to an internal HDD in one of the standard HD bays.
No matter how I make the backup (time machine or chrono sync), once a backup of the OS is present in the system my Mac won't boot and I get stuck on the white screen with no apple logo. Deleting the backup resolves the issue.
I have tried reselecting the Startup Disk, as well as resetting PRAM etc.
Has anyone seen this issue before?
Is it bad practice to have a backup on an internal drive?
    Thanks,
    Danny

Oh wow, thanks for this info. You've actually just provided info for another problem which I had given up on finding a solution to...
I have two PCIe sata cards (one single & one double), and through this thread I have identified the single card as Apricorn - I was unsure what make it was...
SLOT 1 - ATI graphics card
SLOT 2 - Apricorn Velocity Duo x2 (OS on Angelbird 250gb SSD + OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD)
    SLOT 3 - Firewire 800/400 card
    SLOT 4 - Apricorn Velocity solo x 2 (empty - no drive)
All backup drives are HDDs in the traditional bays.
I had experienced HEAPS of problems with OWC drives and the Apricorn cards. The OWCs were unable to boot when on an Apricorn card by themselves. For some reason, having the Angelbird and OWC on one card lets the system boot. Seems I might need to update the firmware of the Apricorn cards.
If you have any other info on the backup problem though it would be of great help!
    Thanks,
    Danny

  • If I no longer have the old application Backup installed on my Mac (part of the .Mac subscription), do I still need the folder called Backup, that is in my Library in the Application Support folder?

If I no longer have the old application Backup installed on my Mac (for performing scheduled backups of data on the computer), do I need the folder called Backup, that is in my Hard Drive, to Library, to the Application Support folder?  (There is no Backup folder in my Home Folder, to Library, to the Application Support folder.)
Backup was part of the .Mac subscription I used to have, and I have not used it since I gave up being a .Mac subscriber many years ago.  In fact I recall Apple saying at one point that they no longer supported the Backup Application.  I assume the Backup folder is just remnants from when I used to have that application, however I could be wrong, and don't want to trash the folder unwisely.
As I looked through the various items in the Backup folder, nothing appears to be modified since 2007, which further confirms that this folder is from long ago when I used to have that application.  I did notice that the main Backup folder itself was the only thing that had a more current modification date on it.  That date coincides with the date that I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac earlier this year.  But I'm assuming that any operating system software installation will place a modification date on all the various folders of one's computer, with the date the new OS was installed.
Any insight will be appreciated!  Thank you!

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

  • Stupid noob question:  Will Mac OS install on an intel-based machine ....

.. that previously was running Windows?
I have a friend (really - it's not me) who is considering moving to Mac OS, but doesn't want to buy a new box. I'm pretty sure the answer is "no", but I thought I'd take the temperature of the experts.
    Thanks.

If I understand your question, your "friend" wants to install it on a non-Mac Intel chipped box. It can't be done without violating the EULA agreement and it can't be done without a long series of hacks. Violating the EULA will result in Steve Jobs taking your first born child, the hacks will result in a Frankenmac.

  • Question re: Bootable backup disc / preparing for Leopard Install

    Hello,
    I've an iMac G5 :
Model: The one right before an isight camera was added CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.1), CPU Speed: 2 GHz, L2 Cache: 512 KB, Memory: 1.5 GB
I'm trying to figure out if I can make a bootable backup of my Tiger OS before installing Leopard. I have heard that Superduper requires a firewire drive to make a bootable backup, but I have a 500GB USB external drive. Is there a way for me to use my USB external drive to make the bootable backup?
I have already backed up copies of my Home folders on this iomega 500gb usb ext. drive. Maybe, this is all I need to worry about and I should just go ahead and install Leopard?
Any helpful advice greatly appreciated. Thank you for considering my post.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The hard drive is not formatted, and it must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in order to install OS X.
Close the OS X installer, and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility. Then, format your hard drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and install OS X

  • Installing Mountain Lion Without Bootable Backup

July 2011 I installed Lion over Snow Leopard and got roundly chastised for not first creating a bootable backup. Now having nothing but trouble first with carbon copy cloner then my external Lacie hard drive died.
I know the answer but I'll ask anyway; Lion was a drastic change from Snow Leopard, no more Rosetta, 64 bit from 32 bit etc. Mt Lion doesn't seem to be that drastically different than Lion. So, better chance to just download over Lion and forget about backup???
    thanks in advance

Hi Barney. Thanks for reply. I'm not worried about my data. Stock sales, tax returns, papers, spreadsheets, journal articles, in other words, anything involving numbers or words as pertain to my personal or professional life are backed up every day at 3 a.m. by MOZY. Once a week I move such things to drop box and I have 2 16GB memory sticks.
When I installed Lion, my data was protected but apps no longer worked, battery time went from 7 hours to  3 hours, I couldn't find some apps and some folders. Pictures,tv shows, videos and movies I purchased at I Tunes and elsewhere that I really didn't care about but would have been nice to have kept were gone.
By the time 10.7.4 came out, almost all non-I Tunes issues (except the battery) were resolved. Virtually everyone at these boards insisted i should have done a complete backup and clean install which I still want to do but this seemingly simple task is becoming a royal pain in the butt. Until Lion, I had downloaded every new OS just like Apple says to with no problems. I don't want to go through what I went through with Lion and will get another external hard drive and buy Carbon Copy Cloner if that's what I should. Already purchased Disc Warrior per CCC suggestion and will bite the bullett if you say to
