Bootable eSATA PCIe Card ?

Hello,
I have a Mac Pro 8 Cores
is there any one can suggest a good eSATA Card so I can connect my External Drive and be able to boot Windows from it (Boot Camp)?
something like this:
http://www.lacie.com/no/products/product.htm?pid=10839
http://www.lacie.com/no/products/product.htm?pid=11068
I have already Apple's Raid card with 4 WD Raptors (Raid0), and I need to use windows for a task (program) that is not exists on OSX and as most of you know I can not install Windows (Boot Camp) on my system because of Apple's RAID Card
I do not want to use VMware or any Virtualization!
Thank you

Hi,
The best way to use boot camp is with one of the internal Mac Pro bays. If you plan your system configuration for Boot Camp use with an internal Mac Pro bay it will always work.
Boot camp typically will not mount if a 3rd party controller is used. If you want to make life easier move boot camp to the internal Mac Pro bay.
From my tests, Boot camp Windows volumes will not boot if they are mounted on Silicon Image based cards, Sonnet cards, Areca cards or HighPoint cards. You might find another solution but the deck is stacked against you
Have fun!

  • Compatible eSATA PCIe Card

    Hi Gang
Back here again beginning to realize a familiar trend; many newer PCIe eSATA cards will not function in older G5 Dual Core with 10.4.11
New System Drive, 2 fresh OSX installs, no hardware modifications. 'No Sleep' options ALWAYS selected.
Relocated ALL 6 Drives to totally independent eSATA enclosures NO BRIDGE. All data thoroughly checked with Disk Warrior. Cables tight and secure.
Tried the Tempo SATA E2P, will not show up in Profiler (Specs show Mac Pro Only).
Tried both FirmTek SeriTek/2ME4-E & FirmTek SeriTek 2SE2-E. Will work for a while until system freezes, (Specs Vague). Tech Support Puzzled despite Firmware Flashes forward and backward. Freezes NEVER occur thru FW800.
Tried inexpensive 'Best Connectivity' Controller Card - Specs show compatible with OSX will not show up in Profiler.
OWC Speedy3G 2 port PCI-e SATA card - SOLD OUT
OWC NewerTech MAXPower eSATA 6G PCIe - 10.5 or later
Seems it's the same old story; back to searching for an older design card that might work.

You mentioned; 'cheap OWC eSata card' was that the 'Speedy3G'?
Yes, that's the one, not bootable, but...

  • Sonnet eSATA PCIe card prevents waking from sleep mode

Tried 2 x (removing card and then reinstalling). If the MacPro goes into sleep mode with the E4P card installed (v2.1.7 driver), then it will not wake up (mouse, keyboard or power button). Only recourse is power off.
Looks like a new driver required from Sonnet.

A new driver, version 2.1.8b1, is available.
Email Neal via [email protected] to obtain it.
He said that 10 users have already installed it and so far are happy.
Be sure to provide him with feedback in case it needs a little more tweaking.

  • Ok, so now I need a new eSATA PCI Express Card for my Mac Pro

I have a Seagate eSata External Drive which comes with an eSATA PCI card.
The http://www.cwol.com/serial-ata/esata-pci-express-1-ext-1-int.htm site recommends this card: eSATA PCI Express Card - 1 eSATA II and 1 Internal SATA II Port, but it doesn't specify whether it works on a Mac Pro - any suggestions?

    Hi
I think the Radeon 9800 is certainly the most powerful graphics card you could buy for your G4 and would do everything you need.
Just be aware there are at least 3 different Mac versions though.
There's a G5 version, the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition, which is 8X AGP and has 256MB VRAM.
There's an older Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition, which is 2X/4X AGP and has 128MB VRAM.
Finally there's a newer Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition, which is 2X/4X AGP and has 256MB VRAM.
So long as you get one of the 2X/4X AGP versions, either with 128MB or 256MB VRAM, it should work fine.
It's perhaps also worthwhile mentioning they do require a separate internal power connection, although this can be taken from a hard drive molex power connector. Also they have a cooling fan which can be noisy.
    I hope this helps.

  • MacPro eSata Port/Card doesn't work with new Hard Disk

    I just bought 4 x 3TB Hard Disc http://tinyurl.com/d2rglvn (specs of disc)
Which I put in Macally Enclosures to work on my Barracuda internal Hard Drive externally http://tinyurl.com/clg8yjo
I already have like 5 x 1,5 TB that works perfectly well with eSata connections (with exact same enclosures)
**My problem is that my 4 new Hard Discs works really fine with my Mac Pro but only with the USB connections but won't work with the eSata Connection. I tried it on a MacBook Pro with an ATA to eSata adaptor and it works perfectly fine (So my discs are not the problem)  **
I am working on a Mac Pro (bought in 2007) - Mac OSX 10,6,8 and this is (I think) the card where I put the eSata :
    PCI Card :

I am kind of new using Mac and its support so what want to know is :
Do I need to update my PCI Card ? If yes how can I do that ?
If not, what can I do to make my disc work ?
My disks are eSata III (6GB/s) is it compatible with my  Mac Pro ?
Thank you Very Much for your time

Difference between the disk that works in eSata and those that doesnt is this....

  • PCIe card to enable bootable SATA3 SSD on early 2008 mac pro?

    Hello all,
Looking to get some feedback on the potential workability of this upgrade for my early 2008 MacPro (16GB RAM running OSX 10.6.7). I work in video post production so I need speed though not necessarily a lot of space.
    Here is what I'm thinking:
BOOT DRIVE: Internal 240GB SSD (OWC SATA3)
    - Power via optical bay via adapter cable
    - Data via PCIe SATA3 card and cable running out the back
    Was thinking of this card:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-PCI-E-SATA-3-0-SATA-III-Card-6Gb-s-eSata-ASM1061-/16 0583982904?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_InterfaceCard
as it seems to be the same as this but cheaper:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/MXPCIE6GS2/
SCRATCH DRIVE: 2x 300GB Velociraptor SATA2 in software RAID 0 in drive bays 1+2
    SCRATCH DRIVE/PROJECT DRIVE: 2x 1TB 7200 SATA2 drives in RADI 0 in drive bays 3+4
BACKUP/STORAGE DRIVES:  2x large 5900 drives connected via external Icy Dock stations that connect to 2 internal eSATA ports on logic board via extension cables. Possibly an extra SATA drive in the optical bay too via SATA-IDE converter. I have an external firewire optical drive.
    Questions:
    - I am using a flashed PC graphics card: 1GB ATI Radeon HD 4870 which takes up so much space I only have room to use the two top x4 PCI slots. WIll these slots be able to fully support the PCIe SATA3 card for the SATA3 SSD?
    - Will the SSD be bootable with the PCIe card linked above? It appears to be the same one that OWC sells but cheaper?
    - Is the speed increase with the PCI card/SATA3 SSD really worth all the fuss or should I just get a SATA2 SSD? I've read on barefeats that SATA3 SSDs can actually be slower than SATA2 SSDs when not in a SATA3 connection
    - Any bottlenecks you can see for limiting my speeds? Will the total transfers max out at 1gbps and do you think this will push that?
    Many thanks for your time!

It has been reported that OS X 10.7 and 10.6.8 do support the ASMedia ASM1061 chipset, which can be found on some very low cost cards.
    http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2011/08/increasing-disk-performance-sata-6gbs.htm l
No promises that it will work for you, but its a cheep enough card that it may be worth trying. You can find the card for even less on eBay by searching for ASM1061. Just be sure you get one with the ports in the right place for you (some have all external, some all internal).
Likewise the Marvel chipset has been known to work as well.

  • ESATA PCI Express card not being recognized

I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz and I'm having trouble getting an eSATA PCI Express card to be recognized in either MAS OS X (10.5.6) or Win XP SP3.
When I plug a FireWire PCI Express card into the slot with a drive attached it gets recognized right away but the eSATA doesn't.
I can go into the system profiler when the card is plugged in and MAC OS X sees the card but the drive doesn't get mounted, or there is no prompt for me to initialize the drive (if it's a new, non-formatted drive). I've tried installing the driver that comes with the eSATA card with no change.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can try?

    Hi,
Typically, this type of issue is caused by an incompatible enclosure or a card problem.
Please provide a link to the card and the enclosure for additional help. If you need an ExprressCard/enclosure combination that works I would suggest FirmTek.

  • 4 port Esata PCIe 8x card crashes mac pro

    Hi
I now have purchased a couple different PCIe esata cards. A cheap one at Best Buy that the drivers crashed my computer. So I bought and expensive 4 port card that is suppose to be compatible with a Mac Pro. Loaded the newest drivers from the site and guess what it crashes my computer. I had a powermac G5 prior and it worked fine with a esata pcix card. Any suggestions???

    Hi kasmik;
Your PowerMac G5 used Open Firmware and the Mac Pro that you are running now uses EFI. So the old PCIe card doesn't have the correct code in RAM to run with the Mac Pro.

  • Installing Esata PCI-e controller cards

I have an IdeaCenter K450 and I have installed (2) two port esata controllers and niether of them is recognized. It does not ask for drivers or a installation CD. My second question is, there difference between an esata Raid controller and an esata controller?

I've to admit, it's new to me, and I believed to many others as well.
How old do you feel PCIE technology is?
To me, 3 years ago, Intel annouces PCIE platform to take over AGP and PCI on the number of parity bits handled to make smoother and faster communication with the board.
About 1 year later, nvidia annouces SLi to bridge 2 PCIE x16 GPUs for faster performance, following by ATI's Crossfire several months later.
If PCIE was really mature, all PCI slots would be simply phased out today on a motherboard. To me, the reason for the standard PCI to remain on a board is like a fall back plan, where makers do not jumped onto the bandwagon to start rolling out masses of PCIE cards. Probably high cost, probably more R&Ds needed due to compatibility issues, this I'm really not sure.
All in all, some have success and some have not, which is why I said test and trial.

  • PCIe card for eSATA drives - and 10.6

    Help !!!!
I have 15 1TB external hard drives - in three 5-bay DAT Optic enclosures. They are on my Mac Pro (2009) - and they house tens of thousands of photographs for clients.
The external drives run from a PCIe card - using a Silicon Image driver ... SiI3124
    http://www.siliconimage.com/products/product.aspx?pid=27
My copy of Snow Leopard will arrive on Monday .. and now I learn that SiI3124 is not supported under 10.6. That makes it unusable for me.
Does anyone know of a PCIe card that can run eSATA drives under 10.6 ???
I can't believe that 10.6 was released without a driver to support external hard drives - other than consumer USB boxes.
Sometimes I fear that Apple is becoming a music store - and forgetting its role in supporting the graphics industry that helped found it. PCs run Photoshop faster than do Mac Pros with CS4 -- and now I can't even store my images with 10.6 !!!!!!!!
    What a huge disappointment !!!!!!!!!

Use the Sonnet tech cards, they have a 10.6 compatibility matrix in the support section of their site. Yes, I paid more for the card when I got it, but I haven't had any headaches with it at all. I guess you get what you pay for.
This is good advice for both PCIe and Expresscard. I have discussed this with Sonnet and I think they regret the cheap/expensive strategy owing to the lack of support on SI drivers. They did lower the price on the Expresscard/34 Pro by 1/3 , or $100.
I still have their E2P (PCIe Si 2 port based card) and an Expresscard/34 (non-Pro) available cheap for anyone who thinks Si drivers are a good value.
The new 64 bit driver will be nice for the handful that run in a true 64 bit boot situation which won't be many and is not really necessary at all anyway. OF course if you have one 32 bit driver you need then that won't be a viable option.

  • Mac Pro RAID and Boot Camp and eSATA controller Card

    Hello all,
I have carefully read the topics concerning the Apple RAID card and its inability to run Boot Camp. Of course, I read this after placing my order. I have been mulling over my alternatives based on everyone's input. Here is what I want to do and how I think I can get there:
My system, when it finally arrives and is assembled will be:
    Mac Pro 3.2GHz
    12MG RAM
    4 x 1TB hard drives
    Apple RAID Card
    ATI 2600
Except for the RAID card, the memory and drives are third party.
My plan was to create a RAID 5 with 3 of the internal drives, with the OS and apps on the non-RAIDed drive. I wanted to install Windows in a Boot Camp partition, but since learned this is not possible with the Apple card. I also planned on using the OWC Mercury Elite RAIDs I have (each enclosure house 2 x 500GB drives, and I have 4 enclosures for a possible max of 4TB of back up) to handle Time Machine (or other BU strategy) for the internals.
I have not received the Mac yet, so cannot look inside. From what I can gather, the Graphics card will occupy the Slot 1. The Raid Card will occupy Slot 4. This leaves me with only one 4x slot for a 4 port eSATA controller card (such as the RocketRAID 2314)
As I see it, I have a couple of obstacles to overcome, and I would appreciate advice/feedback on my possible solutions.
Problem 1: In order to use my existing OWC RAID enclosures, I need TWO controller cards, each with 4 eSATA connectors. Unless I scrap the 500GB drives for 1TB drives, I am stuck. Am I correct in assuming I cannot use Slot 2 for another controller card? Is there any work around?
Problem 2: Boot Camp. Can I purchase the Newer Technology extender cable to access the two eSATA ports on the Mac's motherboard to attach an external SATA drive for this purpose?
    Questions:
    1) I assume I can set up an external RAID (another RAID 5?) with my OWC drives and use Time Machine to back up to them?
    2) From the illustration in the Mac Pro manual I downloaded, there appear to be only 4 PCIe slots, but 5 openings (one seems to be aligned with the back-up battery). I assume this is the double-wide space for the graphics card. Can I use the extra opening for the Newer Tech ports since there is no card taking up space?
    3) Should I remove the Apple RAID card (resell on ebay) and buy the CalDigit RAID Card? It has the virture of allowing a Boot Camp install AND has ports that I can buy SAS to eSATA cables for, allowing me to use all of my OWC drives.
The CalDigit Card sounds good, but I would like to make the Apple card work if I can. Also, with the OPTIONAL battery back-up, the CalDigit card isn't that much less than the Apple card. Besides, I cannot find this card anywhere, everyone's at NAB, and it's Passover next week. AND I need to get this system up and running ASAP so I can begin making the money to pay for it.
Any input would be most welcome.
    Gary

You could get new enclosures with SATA port multipliers for up to five drives per SATA port.
Am I correct in assuming I cannot use Slot 2 for another controller card? Is there any work around?
Apple says any PCI-e card should work in slot 2
    <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWtechPCI/Articles/pciimplementation.html#>
"Mac Pro detects whether an inserted card is PCIe 2.0 (5.0 GHz) or PCIe (2.5 GHz) and selects the operation depending on the card's maximum capability."
but there have been reports of trouble (maybe caused by the recent firmware update). Check with the card maker to be sure.
Problem 2: Boot Camp. Can I purchase the Newer Technology extender cable to access the two eSATA ports on the Mac's motherboard to attach an external SATA drive for this purpose?
No. Those ports are only usable from OSX, but if you only have one optical drive, you can mount another drive in the lower optical drive bay with a Pro Caddy for use with Boot Camp.
    <http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?Category=2704&RequestTimeOut=500>
This simplest connection is to use the optical ATA cable (with a SATA to ATA adapter for a SATA drive).
If you want to use a SATA connection, use a iPass to SATA cable from the iPass port on the Mac Pro logic board, which is normally used for the four SATA drives when there is no RAID card.

It looks like it should work if you route the cables just above the graphics card.

  • ESata express card. - opinions wanted

I've got a Lacie 1.5Terabyte HD and a Lacie eSata express card. I have created 2 partitions on HD, one for installing MAc OS X and the other one for data. Inserted Mac OS X disk that came with Mac, restarted Mac, boot up fine but the Lacie drive is not shown in the list of drives I can choose from to install the OS on. Am I correct if I say that is because the Express Card needs its driver to function ? Connected the drive with fire wire and installed the OS, connected drive to eSata card again. When I go to preferences, I can select the Lacie drive to start up from but the computer do not start up from it, it start up from internal HD, Am I correct if I say it is because the eSate express card is only seen by the Mac after the driver is loaded ?

  • USING A PCI CARD TO RUN A 320GIG ATA/IDE HD IN A QUICKSILVER G4

I didn't realise that my model did not support HD's over 120gb. After much reading I found out that I would need a PCI ata 133 card. On checking on ebay it was confusing as to which one. What do I specifically need? There is a range in prices also for similar units. I would rather pay more for quality? Are all PCI cards compatible for macs and PCs?

Hello! No not all cards will work in Macs and many are not bootable. Sonnet's pci cards are bootable and many like OWC's cards. Personally I like Sonnet's SATA card since many new drives are the newer technology. You could put the drive in an external firewire enclosure that would also be bootable. HERE's the Sonnet ide/ata133 card which will do what you want and HERE's a good enclosure should you decide to go that route. tom

  • Sata PCI card

I have a G4 dual 450 and would like to install a sata pci card so I can use a raid subsystem for my company. Will this G4 support the sata PCI card?

Hi! The G4 can support a SATA card though check for bootability on RAID cards. I use a Sonnet Sata card and it is bootable but the one I use is not a raid card. Tom
