Bootable ext. drive with 10.5/internal with 10.4?

I run 10.4.11 on my intel and want to keep it for now. I also have a lacie 500 fw which I want to install 10.5 on as a bootable disk. Do I just format the hd and load 10.5 on it, do I partition it? I have some older programs which I don't want to lose and run with 10.4. If this is the right way, do I just set the start up disk each time I want to change? Are there complications with this. I also want to use this hd as a back up disk.
Cheers, Roughcuts

That's a lot of questions in such a short paragraph.
You can install Leopard on the external and boot from it, and switch back and forth between the two using System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane.
To install Leopard, the drive should be partitioned using the +Partition Map Scheme+ of +GUID Partition Table+. You can check what it is currently by running Disk Utility, selecting the drive in the sidebar (not the volume indented below the drive), and looking at the details at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.
If it says +GUID Partition Table+, you can proceed with installation. If it says +Apple Partition Map+ (or something else) you should re-partition the drive. Technically, Intel Macs can boot from drive that is +Apple Partition Map+, but the Mac OS X installer not will allow it to be select as the target for installation unless it is +GUID Partition Table+. Installing the Mac OS X system will not delete the existing data on the volume, but you should make a backup of important data, just in case something bad happens. You may want to run +Repair Disk+ in Disk Utility +First Aid+ tab, just to check the drive before running the installation.
If you need to change the +Partition Map Scheme+, with the drive selected in the sidebar, go to the Partition tab. NOTE: THIS WILL ERASE THE DRIVE. Reset the +Volume Scheme+ to the number of partition you want (even if the number is the same as current). Click on the Options button. In the dialog that pops up, select +GUID Partition Table+. Back on the main window, set the format type to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ and Apply the change. This will re-partition and reformat the drive.
I also want to use this hd as a back up disk.
If you are backing up stuff from the internal drive, that should be fine. You may want to create a partition to use for the backups and a partition to use for the Leopard boot volume. You don't have to, but it may make maintenance of the volumes easier (if you ever need to erase one volume while keeping the other). If you are cloning to make the backup, then you probably need to use a separate partition.

  • Win 7 on Ext drive with Lion

From reading some of the posts it appears you cannot load Win 7 onto a Mac using bootcamp and an external drive.   But- please confirm.
I have an Intel-based iMac (early 2008) and 2 external drives.   I have Snow Leopard installed on the Mac and just installed a copy of that install on  external drive 1.  I partitioned the ext drive for 3 partitions- one for SL, one for Data and one for Win 7 (ideally).   The OS partition is ExFAT.   The other 2 are Mac OS Extended (Journaled).   I can boot from the SL partition from the ext drive with no issue- works just like the internal drive.
The second external drive (EHD2) has 2 partitions- one for Lion and one for data.    I can also boot from that drive with no issue and am currently running the Mac with Lion.
The sequence I would really like to follow is this:
1- set up EHD1 with SL and Win7 and see how it works out.
2- if #1 is working as expected, I would like to erase my internal drive, create 2 partitions (Mac OS and Win7).    I plan to do a clean install of Lion on the OS partition and copy over my apps, etc from the EHD1 SL install.   I am doing the clean install of Lion because the install now on EHD2 has issues- I did not migrate properly.
3-  if that works, then I would like to copy the Win 7 install from EHD1 into the internal partition reserved for Win 7.
End result- I have Lion on my internal drive.   I have SN on an external drive (running older MS Office that I do not want to repurchase for Lion).   And- I can boot into Win7 with either ext or int drives.  If the EHD1 install works well, I may not even move the Win7 install to the internal drive and keep the space available for data.   And I can use the EHD2 for other things, or maybe just as a OS backup.
So- that is what I would LIKE to do.   I would appreciate some advice as to what I CAN do and the right sequence to pursue.    Thanks in advance.   Sorry for such a long post.

TH- thanks for the reply.   After I posted this I kept looking around and now I understand.  I did not realize Windows required the internal port.   Another nail in the coffin for Windows vs Mac (IMHO).   I was really amazed at how easy it was to copy a Mac OS image- put on an external drive and boot it.   Felt Windows should be the same.
I erased and did a clean Lion install on my internal drive and placed a Windows partition on it in prep for installing Win 7.   Boot camp gave me the right options- so I should be off to the races.    Thanks again.

  • Create a new bootable hard drive with XP - without CD reader

    All,
Since couple of years my Satellite CD reader is dead. Most probably an hardware failure, the CDs are spinning but that's all ... unbale to read them at all.
As the PC is getting slower and slower, I decided to refomat and re_image it.
As I can't use the CD reader, I have to create the bootable hard drive (with the XP-Home edition provided when I bought the laptop)  using another machine (A DELL or a Toshiba Portege I have also at home).
For that I remove the hard drive fro, the satellite and put it in the other machine, and then reinstall windows ont it.
Everything went fine,  untilI plug back the satellite hard drive to its original host (Satellite machine.
It refuse to boot and stop just after loading the MUP.Sys drivers  (classique as the hardware is diffrent)
       My questions are :
       1. Any way I can create a proper bootable drive for Satellite 5105-S501 in such conditions (any place I can download  an image for it)
       2. I can' enter the BIOS (ESC key do not let me in, F1 and F12 same ...). Any way to force to enter in the BIOS
ESC key just show me the message : Type F1 for default :_°
    Thanks
    P.

    Malcolm:
Thanks so much for replying to my question! I am new to MAC and have Tiger and Windows XP on separate drives. I will be removing the drive with Tiger and putting in a new drive to load Leopard and I wondered how that would effect accessing Windows XP since the Windows drive will remain in the system. Is there anything I need to do with bootcamp, since Windows was loaded using the Beta version of bootcamp, and bootcamp icon currently shows in the Windows XP taskbar. Tiger was pre-loaded when the computer was purchased. In fact I had to backdate the beta bootcamp version in order to get it to work. I hope this is not asking too much, but I wondered if there would any problem with Windows after the Leopard load.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

  • Should Tiger (10.4.7) be able to boot an ext. drive with Panther (10.3.9)?

New iMac 20" won't boot 10.3.9 volume from either of two external drives.
Maybe it is the fact that the volumes on my external drive are 10.3.9 and the iMac is 10.4.7?? This ext. drive house the drive from my dead G5 which I have been booting from thru my old G3 (also running 10.3.9), to use my current data and programs from the G5. I thought I'd be able to boot from it on the iMac.
Option/power up, only shows the iMac's HD as an option to boot from.
    Thanks, Dave
    iMac 20" 2.16GHz, G3 PowerBook (Pismo 10.3.9)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

:o( I had just read the KB article you linked to, then came back here. Unfotunately, I had a G5 that shipped with 10.3.2, that did not come with Setup Assistant. It is now updated to 10.3.9, but that is no help (I don't think).
Other variables are that the G5 is dead. I am running it's OS from an external drive thru my old PowerBook G3 (also running 10.3.9). The article says be sure your old computer's firmware is up to date.
My Powerbook matches the link for current firmware ver. 4.1.8. I don't know if the G5 OS's firmware ver. (running from the ext. drive thru Powerbook) matters, but it appears to be one version old at v. 5.1.4, when current seems to be 5.1.5f2. (I doubt this can be updated because there is no more G5 machine!)
So can I still use Target Disk Mode which I used for PowerBook to G5 long ago. If so, I hope I can selectively move only the parts I want. The G5 was purchased used and had ton's of eroneous stuff on it.
I know I can do this (repeat)...
    my mantra,

  • HAL doesn't recognize my ext. drive with 1500GB, the 500GB one works

    Hi there
Some days ago I bought a 1500GB external harddrive, but after plugin it in via USB, it doesn't appear in my file manager. I tested it with thunar and pcmanfm, with both it didn't work. I don't think, that it's their fault, I think HAL doesn't like my new drive. My older one with 500GB is automounted as it should be. And I also don't think, that its a hardware issue, because in an ubuntu live-session it works with both harddrives.
This is how the two drives are partitioned
    Disk /dev/sdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x0008941c
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 1 60801 488384001 83 Linux
    Disk /dev/sdc: 1500.3 GB, 1500301910016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 182401 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x0004aa3c
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdc1 1 182401 1465136001 83 Linux
As you can see, no difference here. The drive with 1500GB has xfs as filesystem, the 500GB has jfs, but that isn't the reason, I tried many filesystems on the 1500GB one and it didn't work with all of them
In the AUR, there appeared a new packaged called devicekit and I thought, that this might spit out some helpful informations. I used the command "devkit -m"

The last line says that it can't find the "scsi:t-0x0d" module, but I can't find what I would need to enable to get that module. I can't find any related modules in the standard arch modules either. I'm using a custom kernel and I can't boot the standard arch kernel to test because it says something like "/dev/sda5" cannot be found and then it panics (the same startup options work fine on my custom kernel, the standard flips out for some reason).

  • Using 2 ext. drives with a MacBook?

I want to upgrade from LE8 to Logic Studio. My MacBook's hard drive, though, has
only 37G of free space. Looking at Apple's system requirements, I get the feeling I may need additional hard drive space for the exs samples and other content. Even though I'll only be installing Logic (and not Main Stage, etc) it also seems prudent not to ask the MacBook's internal HD to run both the application as well as the samples.
The MacBook has only a single Firewire port. I currently have an external hard
drive connected there to record my audio files to. Can I load the exs samples onto a second external drive and plug that into the available port on the separate drive I currently
    use?
Put more briefly: Can I daisy chain firewire drives, using one for recording and
    one for exs
    sample storage?
    Jim

The solution you suggested is perfectly reasonable, however if you are running a large number of audio files and EXS files you may run into bandwidth issues.
You could always get a larger firewire drive and use the other one to archive stuff, but to be honest i think you would be perfectly fine using a USB 2 drive to stream + record audio. Are you using a firewire or USB audio interface?

  • Backing up iMac and photos stored on an external drive to another ext drive

    Hi
I have been searching everywhere for a solution to my back-up procedure. But there are so many different options and scenarios and I am getting so confused. At the moment I have an iMac with a 1TB HD. Very little of it is used up as all my photos are stored on a 1 TB external HD and managed through Lightroom. At the moment I am backing up both drives using Time Machine to another 2TB ext drive. I don't really feel comfortable only using Time Machine to back up all my photos. And maybe that is only because I dont really understand how it works, especially when it comes to overwriting the data (which I have not had to do yet - even though I have had my iMac for over two years and I have about 400GB of photos on my 1TB external drive). What I would like to do (but am not sure how) is have two identical ext drives with my photos on that I can swap regularly and also use between my iMac and my new MacBook Pro which I am getting next week. I want to continue backing up my iMac HD with Time Machine and possibly even have a bootable clone. It would also be nice to be able to carbon the 1TB ext drive to my 2TB drive alongside my TM backups. So I will therefore have two exact copies of my drive with my photos on it. And a back up drive with TM backups and a copy of the photos (in a separate folder or something). But I am so confused about what is the best way to go about this.
Thank you so much in advance for your help or taking the time to read this looong explanation.

Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to another one...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    Or SuperDuper...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Or the most expensive one & my favorite, Tri-Backup...

This last one can do everything CCC, SD, & TM can do, and so much more.

  • Moving a sparcebundle from TC drive to TC ext drive

I have 3 macs backing up to TC. I want to move 2 of them to backup to a TC ext drive and retain the sparcebundles already created. Dragging the sparcebundles to the ext drive seems to result in a 6602 error message. Superduper cannot 'see' the sparcebundles. Suggestions? Also, tested starting fresh on the ext drive with one mac and it worked fine. thanks, gib

I've never tried this, but what about using AirPort Utility -> Time Capsule -> Disks -> Archive? Once you've created a clone of the TC HDD onto that drive, delete the sparsebundle you do NOT want. Again, just a suggestion as I've never tried this before.
Note: Since it is a clone, all content on the external HDD will be erased (including that new sparsebundle you've just created).

  • After reformatting my 1 Tb WD ext drive and tinkering with the "exclude these items" list, I now get the following error message from Time Machine:Are you sure you want to back up to the same device your original data is on? the WD disk has mounted??

After reformatting my 1 Tb WD ext drive and tinkering with the "exclude these items" list, I now get the following error message from Time Machine: "Are you sure you want to back up to the same device your original data is on?"  I've reformatted in Disk Utilities...not sure what I did wrong.  Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by "booted" from it.
If the Mac OS is installed on the external drive, then it's possible to start up from it, just as you do from your internal drive. Please open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, and verify that your internal drive is selected as the startup disk.
Assuming that's the case, then it may be that your TM settings have been corrupted. Turn off TM, then move or delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. Turn TM back on, recreate your settings, and try again.

  • Want to swap internal 120GB hard drive with 500GB but retain Aperture Lib

I am still on Aperture 2 but want to upgrade to Aperture 3. Current Aperture lib has grown to over 40GB. My laptop is starting to get generally slower and I feel that I have a lot of HDD fragmentation that I have not resolved yet. My internal HDD is 120GB with only 19GB now available. I do a monthly backup to an external 500GB drive using Time Machine. No other backups performed nor do I do any Aperture backup including vaulting. My laptop is roughly 3 years old.
I have not used any kind of defrag software. I have been reading about iDefrag which gets a lot of praise. But my understanding is that to use it, you need to have a lot of disk free space to copy files to temporarily. Below is what I plan to do and I am asking for opinions as to whether it is practical.
1.) Purchase another 500GB portable external drive.
2.) Divide new drive in 2 partitions; bootable 300GB and 165GB (remainder is used in formatting).
3.) Copy my entire internal 120GB hard drive to bootable 300GB partition as a full system backup.
    4.) Start Aperture.
5.) Vault my entire Aperture 2 library to non-bootable 165GB partition.
    6.) Stop Aperture.
7.) Have Apple technician swap out internal 120GB drive and replace it with a new 500GB drive.
(Data will not be copied from old drive to new drive by Apple tech.).
8.) Boot the reconfigured laptop from the 300GB external drive.
Q1.) Is it possible to boot from an external drive with no data on the internal drive?
9.) If yes, copy the 300GB drive to the new internal 500GB drive. (Maybe format 500GB first?)
Q2.) Will the copy put in place all previous software e.g. Aperture, etc. on new drive.
Q3.) Will I be able to start Aperture and retrieve images without accessing 165GB partition?
Q4.) If I can not access my Aperture library images after the copy, can I restore the library
from the vault operation in step 5?
    10.) Upgrade to Aperture 3.

    Hi metoymi;
Personally I don't like your plan. Even with two partition on a single drive all of your eggs are in a single basket. The most like disk problem is disk failure which will wipe out both partition on the single drive.
I know it is more to carry but I would suggest that you at least consider putting the old drive in a portable shell and using that for your vault instead. At least that way a disk failure is only wipe out half of your data.
    Allan

I am not 100% what isn't allowed.. but I am assuming you want to spread the backup across the two disks.. internal TC and 6TB external.. this is not possible.. It has to be one or the other. TC has no way to build a raid JBOD or anything else. Nor would you want to as that is the most likely to fail and kill your data.
Let me add, backing up 6TB over USB on TC.. will be the most excruciating experience of your life.. cf child birth or passing kidney stones.. large ones.. being the male equivalent.

  • Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partition?

Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
Read carefully the speed of the USB drive plugged into the TC.

Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

  • Time Machine: Can I use a smaller external hard drive with larger internal?

Can I use a 250G external hard drive with and 500G unfilled internal drive with time machine? Or will time machine require I a 500G? I don't plan on filling the internal drive for a long time and don't want to buy a new external drive right now.

Yes, but you are very likely to get in trouble very quickly.
The problem is that TimeMachine saves multiple versions of any file modified, and if that file happens to be large, you can quickly fill up your TimeMachine drive such that it is throwing away older versions faster than you would desire.
Also if your boot drive's storage usage gets even close to the 250GB external drive's capacity, TimeMachine is likely to stop working.
If possible, I would suggest an external drive that is twice as large as your boot drive, or at least 1.5 times larger.
I guess you could repartition your boot drive so it is smaller than your external disk so you would be less likely to use more space than could fit on the external.
Personally, my opinion about backups is that much of my data is impossible to replace (family pictures, etc...), and spending money on backup hardware is a small price to pay for securing those memories. I also try to have it backup in more than one location in more than one way.
