Bootable Mac OS X Tiger CD?

I am running a PowerPC G4 PowerBook. It is running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and has 1 GB of RAM, and a 1.5 GHz processor. I would like to have a rescue CD in case my computer is does not boot one day. I was wondering how I could create a bootable CD that looks and runs just like a normal Mac Computer, but was compressed onto a CD and I could choose which applications to put on it. I have heard of BootCD by CharlesSoft, but the project is currently abandoned and not compatible with Tiger. If I could get a Tiger version of BootCD, or something exactly the same, that would be my solution, but I have not found one yet.

Hi Steve,
Not much experience with any "liveCD", even though I do have 2.5 Linux installs.
Well, it's very interesting and I have made some full blown Maintenance DVDs... dozens of Repair & Other Utilities, even APPs, like just about everything, but when it's all said & done, counting the unreliability of Optical drives & media for me, the slow speed of everything done from CD/DVD, the low cost of an External Firewire drive... well again, it's Firewire drives for me.

  • How EFI shell can help you backup a non-bootable Mac

I hope this post will help someone in my situation who need an emergency method to backup a non-bootable Mac.
Last week, I have to deal with a MacMini (Mid 2010 with Snow Leopard installed) which worked only 5 months until it froze and gave the following error at startup:
panic (cpu 0 caller0x55a1eb): Unable to find driver for this platform: “ACPI”
“You need to restart your computer…”
The same black screen with “You need to restart your computer…” text appeared when I tried to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD holding the C key. Also, error appeared when I tried to boot by holding the Shift key for Safe Boot mode or Cmd+S for Single-User mode.
So I decided to extract all valuable data and send it to an Apple service. Since, I was unable to boot even from a DVD, I tried r-Studio Emergency CD Demo, which worked fine, but the demo allows only files less than 64K to be recovered.
Then I found rEFIt site and created a bootable CD. It started fine and by using the shell I found that there is a copy command that may help me save some data on an USB flash memory. Unfortunately, rEFIt site lacks any information how to use EFI shell, but finally on other sites related to Intel EFI, I found that this shell is just a DOS box. So here are some useful commands that you may use in order to backup your data from a non-bootable Mac:
    1. You have to create a bootable rEFIt CD. Follow the instructions here:
    http://refit.sourceforge.net/
    2. Insert the CD and boot you Mac by holding the C key.
    3. When the rEFIt boot menu appears select EFI Shell icon.
    4. In the shell:
Use "map" command to list all devices. I didn't find how to list them page by page, so you will see only the end of the listing:
    map
Use "map -r" to remap all devices and assign them a letter. For example if you want to connect a USB flash drive:
    map -r
Now, you are ready to backup your files. Begin by typing "fs0:" to enter in the first drive:
    fs0:
Then "ls -b" to list files page pay page:
    ls -b
fs0 is most probably your CD. Try with "fs1:", "fs2:" until you see your internal drive as well as USB drive. You will recognize internal drive by existence of folders like "Library", "System", "Users", etc. Finally, you are ready to copy your valuable data by "cp" or "cp -r" (for folders) command. Let's suppose your internal drive is fs1 and USB drive is fs3:
    fs1:cd Userscd <your user>cd Desktopmkdir fs3:\Backupls -bcp somefile.zip fs3:\Backup\
This is DOS, so use "\" for paths. Of course, you will lose Mac OS X attributes such as owner, user rights, attached system information (such as Spotlight comment) and resource forks. But unless your files use resource forks (used mostly in Mac OS 9) you can safely backup using the cp command. If you need full list of EFI shell commands you can type "help" in the shell or "help cp", "help map", etc. or search for "EFI Shell commands" in Google.
Don't copy anything from your internal drive back to it. It may be damaged. Always copy from the internal drive to your external USB drive.

Thanks for posting this, I've used rEFIt in the past for my multi-boot Mac (4 operating systems) however never explored the EFI enviroment.
So Mac's are running DOS? Who would have guessed that?
Too bad rEFIt hasn't seen any updates of as late, don't know how well it's going to agree with the new Lion and firmware updates.

  • TROUBLE with Mac OS X Tiger install on G4 iMac 1.25 GHz

Trying to install retail copy of Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 onto an iMac G4 1.25 GHz running OS X 10.3.9. The DVD shows up on the desktop when inserted, but after clicking install and waiting for the reboot, the system just loads OS X 10.3.9 and NOT the 10.4 setup.
Inserting the CD and holding "C" during startup yields the blinking system folder with the question mark.
Apparently no firmware updates are needed and the iMac meets the requirements. Any ideas, suggestions, or workarounds are much appreciated.
I also have a MacBook Pro (Intel, of course), and was wondering if there was any way to use it to install the PPC version of 10.4 on the iMac. (Can I boot the iMac as target disk mode on my MBP and install the PPC version of Tiger onto it that way? I don't know if that will work with the intel/ppc hiccup.)
Someone please tell me how to get this working!

Yes, unless you have the original install disks that came with the computer ( with iLife included) you will have to buy iLife. However, iLife 11 requires an intel processor and snow leopard. If you don't meet those requirements you should try to find an older version. ( usually you can find something on amazon.com)

  • Mac OS X Tiger installation quiz!

    All,
I got a resetting message with my PowerBook G4 12" and rebooted sevearal times but the message kept coming again. I decided to do the following steps:
    a. run a hardware test and it passed complete one
    b. re-install the Mac OS X Panther with the install CD after erase and format my HD
    c. re-install the Mac OS X Tiger with the CD came with the book.
    d. the resetting message with four different languages still showed up when I tried to reboot system every time. I surely can try the safe boot but how I can get my Powerbook back to normal? Should I send it back to Apple center for repair?
    Thanks,

Just why were you wanting to install Panther if Tiger came with your machine?
Unless the Panther installer is the retail version there are any number of problems trying to install an OS from a restore disc from another machine. It just does not generally work.
The restore disc(s) that came with your machine are what I would suggest you use to attempt a clean installation. It would be a good idea to initialize (format) the drive (and would not hurt to "zero" it) to get the remnants of anything that might cause a problem off of it.
Is your machine still under warranty? If doing the above does not straighten things out it would probably be best to call AppleCare and see just what they want to do.
    Good Luck

  • Can I upgrade my PowerBook G4 from Mac OS X Tiger to Snow Leopard?

I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 on my PowerBook G4. Can I upgrade to v10.6 Snow Leopard? Just asking because I never upgraded to v10.5 Leopard. Are there any adverse impacts of doing this for my PowerBook G4?

    Hi jjhron;
As Stedman says you can't go to Snow Leopard with your G4 PowerBook but if your PB meets the specs for Leopard you can upgrade to that instead.

  • Can I install Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 on a dell Optiplex Gx280?

Hi! I have a couple of questions which I can't seem to find the answers too.
    1) Can I install Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 on a Dell Optiplex GX280?
    2) Can I take the HDD from the aforementioned Dell and place it in my Power Mac G4 Digital Audio? If so, will Tiger still be on it?
    3) If I can't install Tiger on my Dell, can I rip the DVD drive out and use that to install?
    4) HDD's don't have to be Mac specific, do they?
Thank you for your valuable time,

  • Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

  • Where do I purchase single user copy of Intel build Mac OS X Tiger?

    Hi,
I am planning to reinstall my intel Macbook pro, and I bought a copy of Mac OS X tiger from campus store today.
I did not mention that I have needed an intel build, thought Apple would put intel and powerpc build together.
Obviously I was wrong. The one they gave me is for build for powerpc only, would not work on my mac, neither can not startup from boot.
The disc is issued under label: MA453Z/A.
Before I go to the store tomorrow, I checked the online store and they only sell powerpc build version(MA453Z/A). Where can I purchase Intel based single user Tiger copy?
    thanks

Mac Book Pro 17 inch CD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Apple doesn't produce/sell a Universal Tiger retail install package since Tiger has shipped pre-installed with all Intel Macs.
You need to contact Apple/Apple Care to request a replacement install package for your Mac model and build which will also include all additional software included with your Mac purchase which is not included with a Tiger retail install package. And keep this copy in a safe place this time.
The Leopard retail install package will be produced/sold as Universal since Universal will be required.

You can't install a second OS on your PB. However your clone should boot your PB from the disk it's on. Just connect that disk, then in System Preferences >> Startup disk, choose it and restart.

The StartupParameters.plist file is a text file
    rw-r--r-- (chmod 0644 StartupParameters.plist). It's

  • I need help installing mac os x tiger, disc 2

my macbook successfully installed disc 1 of mac os x tiger, within minutes, however when it asks for me to insert disc 2, and i do so, it almost finishes installing the disc, then an error message pops up, saying "there were errors installing the software, please try installing again" i have repeated this process at least 20 times, and the same thing keeps happening. i can't even use my computer regularly since everytime i open it up this happens! please help!

Hold the Moyse button down to eject Disc #2 while booting up, at the same time hold the Option/alt key down to have the startup manager pop up, insertt Disc #1 & wait For Disc #1 to show as a boot choice.
That second Disc thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1442
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • Will new Intel macs support OSX Tiger?

I work in a testing environment and I need to setup another Tiger computer. We have a few intel macs that have tiger. I need to get another machine and set it up with Tiger. If I purchased a new iMac or mac mini, is there a release of Tiger that will run on these PCs? Also, I have been trying to look for a retail release of Tiger that supports Intel processors. Was a product like this ever shipped?
    Thanks.
    Kelly

    kelly, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Macs can only run an OS version that they shipped with or a higher version. So if you are looking at a new Mac that has Leopard installed, it can't run Tiger. You'll have to buy an older Mac.
You can look at this list of G4 & G5 Mac's specs to find which newest-older model will run on Tiger. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/index.html
