Bootable Solaris

I'm downloading 5 Solaris 10 ...iso.zip files. I want to load up Solaris 10 into a vmware virtual machine so I need a bootable CD. Anyone know how I create that after I have this download?
TIA

  • Creating Bootable Solaris CDs on Linux

    Hi,
I downloaded the zipped iso images for the Solaris 8
(7/01) CDs. I tried to create the CDs using cdrecord
but the Installation CD and Software CD1 are coming
    out as un-bootable CDS.
Here is a command I used:
    cdrecord -v -eject speed=12 dev=0,0,0 sol-8-u5-sparc-v1.iso
    Similarly for the Installation disk.
Is there something else I should do the make CDs
    bootable on a Sparc machine?
The Installation CD shows only 120KB of data. It has a erroneous link (Boot -> ../s1) in the root directory.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

    machine is ultra 10 , 4.3gb, 300 mhz , 256 mb ram from ebay

From your post I do not believe the CD drive is at fault. I believe the machine you wrote the CD is at fault. I would create another set of bootable CD's using a different machine with a CD-R/W drive. I would write the CD at 4 speed and try again. Some Ultra 10's have the slower 4 speed CD drive. What OBP is telling you is the CD appears to be 'blank' or 'corrupted', that's the cause for the 'bad magic number' error. If you can find a bootable Solaris Installation CD I'm sure it would boot just fine. Another thing you might look at, I've seen this be a problem with CD's, is the recordable surface. Are there any finger prints, smears etc? If so, clean the record surface then try booting the Ultra 10 again.

  • How do I install dual-boot Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on one hard disk ?

I tried to install Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on same disk using CDs, but
the second installation overwrote the first Solaris which was installed
previoudly on the half-disk size partition of same disk.
How do I install two Solarises on one hard disk ?
    Thanks
    Yakov

There are no tricks to get Solaris to dual boot on the same drive. Just allocate and pick the free slices not used by the first Solaris install when you put in the second install. Technically speaking there is nothing preventing you from running seven separately bootable Solaris instances on the same drive (one of 8 available slices is overlap -- slice 2) provided you use a swap file on a root partition instead of reserving a whole slice for swap.

  • Solaris 10 sparc boot dvd

    Hi,
i need to make standalone jumpstart bootable solaris 10 sparc dvd but i have some problems with the new installation process. i readed all the scripts in the boot process but i don't now what i need to change and where i need to change it in order to have this customized dvd.
I follow the blueprints for solaris 9 and i had no problems !!
    best regards,

    hi spammy,
yep, the link to slice 1 is only on the Cdrom version, not on the DVD.
i configured in the same manner my Solaris 10 as Solaris 9 but after the "boot cdrom -install" command, the installation don't find the config files (sysidcfg, rules.ok etc...) and then return in the interactive mode.
Where should i place the config files ?
Is there the need of changing some scripts in Solaris 10 ?

  • How to reinstall Solaris Grub menu

I have a dual boot PC with Solaris 10 and Windows Vista. I installed Windows Vista and the Solaris 10. So I got a boot menu (which I assume is a grub menu) to make a selection of the OS I want to boot on my system.
Unfortunately I lost the grub for Solaris. Now I can boot only on Windows. How do I recover the previously installed grub?
PS: Steps to do this will be helpful.

You need at least a bootable Solaris Install CD/DVD. Go to command line option rather than install option. Type 'grub' and enter
    # grub here you type 'c' to get to 'grub' command prompt
    grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
(hd0,1,a) Note: This is the answer from grub where solaris boot partition resides - number may be different on your system+
    grub> root (hd0,1,a)
filesystem is ufs, partition type 0xbf
    grub> setup (hd0)
    Checking if “boot/grub/stage1” exists...yes
    Checking if “boot/grub/stage2” exists...yes
    Checking if “boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5” exists...yes
    Running “embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5(hd0)”...16 sectors
    are embedded... succeeded
    Running “install /boot/grub/stage1(hd0) (hd0)1+16p (hd0,1,a)
    /boot/grub/stage2/boot/grub/menu.lst”... succeeded
    Done.

  • Bootable Linux CD - Help Needed

    Hi,
Firstly I'll apologise as this isn't really a Solaris problem.
If anyone can point me to the correct Linux forum I'll take my query there.
But for the moment I hope someone here can help...
Does anyone out there know how to create a bootable Linux CD for Sun SPARC hardware.
Most of the references I have found are for a bootable Solaris CD and start with the Solaris 8/9 installation CDs and involve making small changes to the rcS scripts.
I'm trying to create a bootable Linux CD so nothing on the Sol 8 or 9 disks will be relevant to me.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for creating a CD from scratch
    Thanks in advance
    Kevin Neave

    Hi,
You will need an external CD burner such as an Apple Superdrive that you can get from Apple Store. You can then rip the tracks into itunes. I would suggest that you get an external drive to mainly provide back up of your music - don't rely solely on Cloud storage.
Once you have ripped your CD's, you do this directly to the external drive you can subscribe to match http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4914.

  • Making bootable trouble shooting CD

    Making bootable trouble shooting CD
I am trying to create a bootable Solaris 7-8 CD that will have the basic file system. What I am would like to have on the disk is the following:
    Fsck
    Snoop
    Mount
    Ifconfig
    /usr/bin
    /etc/
    and some others.
Does any one have suggestions on how to do this?
Currently I use makecd.i386 command. I am not sure where this came form. I found it on one of my servers and it was set up to make a 2.5 bootable CD. I would like to know how to upgrade to 7+. Also if anyone knows of any information on this command. I would be willing to use a Linux boot disk if I could find a driver that supports ufs file system.

I am having the same issue. My disk drive will not accept any CDs, music or blank. It doesn't recognize them and ejects them. I have a Power Mac G4 with a combo DVD-RW/CD-RW drive. I have never had problems with this before. Could it be from updating versions to 10.3.9? I'm weary of restoring my computer because if that doesn't solve the problem, I won't be able to reinstall all my extra software (like Adobe photoshop, etc) b/c the disk drive doesn't work and you use it for the installation CDs. Any help would also be appreciated!!!

  • ??? - Install CD w/ custom /boot/solaris/devicedb/master ?

    Howdy Friends:
Any suggestion on how I might go about creating a custom Solaris 10 install CD with a modified /boot/solaris/devicedb/master file? My IDE controller isn't recognized by Solaris 10, and I need to modify the master file to include the driver info (Sil 0680 IDE RAID) for installation.
I am aware I could just create an install floppy via DD, however this system does not have a floppy drive nor a working FDD controller. I also cannot boot via a USB floppy due to no support in the BIOS.
I've tried installing via a network install (PXE), but I never get past the "Solaris Network Boot..." screen.
Any help installing on this system would be awesome. I'm excited to use Solaris 10!

The process for creating a bootable Solaris x86 CD is quite a bit harder than it is on Sparc hardware. Or at least it was with the only process I know about. It is much simpler to perform a network-based installation.
One catch to the network install, however, is that a Sparc system cannot read all the partitions on the x86 Solaris CD. I had to put the disc into an existing Solaris x86 system, NFS mount a directory from my Sparc server, and perform a "./setup_install_server" from the x86 system to the NFS directory.
Once that was complete, I could use the Sparc server to jumpstart the x86 systems using custom configurations. It also allowed me to install the correct drivers for the x86 system in question that were not part of the Solaris CD (which is one of the problems you describe).
I realize that you were probably looking for a simpler answer that this...

  • Can't boot 250 Server w/Solaris10 free download

Hi, very new to Sun/Solaris. Attempting to fresh install Solaris 10 on Sun 250 Server. Downloaded all 4 .iso images from Sun website, extracted files, and burned to CD. From OpenBoot, here is message:
(### commented comments are my own ###)
    # here I am starting server w/CD in drive:
    #<Sun banner>
Boot device: disk File and args:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
#seconds later, here I am booting
    #from command line:
    ok boot cdrom
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@6,0:f File and args:
Bad magic number in disk label
    Can't open disk label package
    Can't open boot device
    ok
    #end of OpenBoot messages
So, the machine appears to begin boot, but fails. I have examined the files at CD root level. They are:
    SOLARIS_10 (a directory)
    .CTTOC
    .INSTALL_CONFIG
    .SLICEMAPFILE
    _VOLUME.INF
    COPYRIGHT
    JDS_THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME
Being new to Sun, I'm guessing that the file named .INSTALL_CONFIG might be the boot file? But this file is 100% empty. I have downloaded the disc 01 .iso file twice from the Sun website, same thing each time.
Any help graciously appreciated. My goal is to get the server booted & running on Solaris 10.
If nothing else, if I just knew the name/location of the boot file(s), I might be able to figure things out.
    Thank you!

Yes, I've successfully burned many sparc bootable solaris install cdroms with cdrw on both sparc and x64/x86 solaris. Assuming the image download isn't corrupted there probably is nothing wrong with your host.
We only release floppys for x64/86 installs. You can also setup jumpstart or JET on another host and net boot the e250.
Having the ISO image you can burn a bootable Sparc CD
with any program that is able to burn ISO images to
CD.That's not completely correct. You can only use a burning program that doesn't care about the size of the cdrom and just lays down the iso. The sparc bootable image is larger than a standard burnable size because of the added boot image layed out in the vtoc. I've used cdrw -C -i filename. The -C option allows the burning program to ignore the file size limits and use the raw iso. Google for "vtoc bootable cdrom site:www.sun.com" and look at the blueprints and whitepaper pdfs for more information on how to build a bootable cdrom image.
Last night I created a Sparc bootable cdrom from Nero 6.3.0.
    Open Nero,
Get to the "burn iso to disk"
After selecting the iso open the configuration icon
            Select the General Tab
    Uncheck the following:
Check for correct disc format before burning
                    Check joliet filenames before burning
            Select Expert Features tab
    Check:
X Enable overburn Disc-at-once burning (read the notes below)
82min 0 sec 0 frmMine was set to 82 minutes by default.
A word of caution, if you create you're own isos and if you don't re-enable these settings to what they were, you may burn bad cdroms.
I put the disk in a solaris host, with volume managment running it mounted an Solaris 10 u1 Sparc as the following:

  • Resetting root password

    Hi
I have a Sun Ultra5 Server running solaris 2.6. I have lost the root password and would like to reset it. Does anyone know how I can reset the root password? I have a bootable Solaris software CD.
    Thanks
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
It is good to know that you have a bootable cd.
Well to start with don't if you have lost the root password.
    We can reset the password.
    Way to reset the password.
    1. boot the system to come in ok prompt.
    2. then boot from cdrom in single user mode.
    3. after booting from the cdrom mount the file system (root file system c0t0d0s0) which contains the etc\shadow,password ... files.
    4. then vi the shadow file and remove the password.
    5. save and come out.
    6. reboot the system. you login as root then you will be promped as to give new password.
    7. So here give the new password.

  • Need help creating a bootable dvd for solaris 9 using windows

Ok, I am using windows XP, I have 2 hard drives in my computer and want to load Solaris 9 on my other hard drive. I have downloaded the ziped ISO files from sun.com, I have extracted them (sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a, sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b, sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-c, sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-d, and sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-e) Now what? I burned them to a DVD but its not booting to them (I have checked my boot sequence) I figured I would have to make a bootable DVD but I don't know how. All the instructions I am finding are for doing it in Solaris 9. Can someone please give me instructions on what I need to do now that I have downloaded the files or point me to a site that already has the instructions? Also I have Nero 7 Essentials as my DVD burning software.
    Thanks

Copy all unzipped pieces into one directory (sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a, sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b etc... all 5 pieces)
take command prompt and goto that directory and run the below command
    copy /b sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a + sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b + sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-c + sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-d + sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-e sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso.iso
    It will create sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso.iso file.
Using any DVD Burner software (e.g. Nero 7 or later), Burn the newly ceated image ( sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso.iso) do "Burn Image" (NOT a DATA DVD/CD)

The Solaris installation program is divided into a series of short sections
where you'll be prompted to provide information for the installation. At
the end of each section, you'll be able to change the selections you've
    made before continuing.
    About navigation...
    - The mouse cannot be used
    - If your keyboard does not have function keys, or they do not
respond, press ESC; the legend at the bottom of the screen
will change to show the ESC keys to use for navigation.

On the next screens I have to choose the NFS4 domain:
    {color:#3366ff}-- NFSv4 Domain Name{color}
{color:#3366ff}NFS version 4 uses a domain name that is automatically derived from the
system's naming services. The derived domain name is sufficient for most
configurations. In a few cases, mounts that cross domain boundaries might
cause files to appear to be owned by "nobody" due to the lack of a common
    domain name.
The current NFSv4 default domain is: ""

After I select "Continue", the installation is proceeding automatically.
Could you please tell me what I should to to make this installation hands-free?
The sysidcfg file contains these parameters:
    system_locale=C
    timezone=PST8PDT
    timeserver=localhost
    terminal=sun-cmd
    name_service=NONE
    nfs4_domain=dynamic
    network_interface=primary {netmask=255.255.255.0 protocol_ipv6=no}
    security_policy=NONE
I have found some information in the internet, that I need to create the
.NFS4inst_state.domain file in /etc directory. But it doesn't work...
I have also read that I need to edit the post installation script, but as far as I know this script is executed after the installation, so it doesn't affect the solaris Installation Program that is launched after the first reboot.
If you could give me any tips on how to resolve yhis problem, I'd be very thankful.

I had similar, not identical, issues with a custom JumpStart DVD I was creating. I was not using flar and it was for x86, not SPARC.
I found that changing the case for the value assigned to network_interface made a difference. In looking at the sysidcfg manpage and online JumpStart documentation, all the examples they used had capitalized "PRIMARY" and "NONE". When I changed the value to the capitalized equivelant, my particular issue had gone away.
You may also want to consider adding ip_address and default_route to the network_interface section. Test either way to identify the differing results.
In my particular scenereo, I did not want any networking configuration to be done. The resulting line in sysidcfg was:
    network_interface=NONE {hostname=jsclient}HTH
