Bootable Volume Permissions Keep Changing

I've got a strange problem.
I have two bootable backup volumes on different physical disks...one is a 3.5" firewire hard drive and the seceond is a portable 2.5" firewire hard drive. The permissions of bootable volumes (the volume itself, not the items inside) are supposed to be:
system: Read and Write
admin: Read and Write
everyone: Read only
And, the checkbox for "Ignore ownership on this volume" should NOT be checked.
However, over time, the permissions of these volumes will somehow change to:
my username: Read and Write (my actual admin username)
(unknown): Read and Write
everyone: Read only
And, the checkbox for "Ignore ownership on this volume" will become checked--which totally messes up a bootable backup.
If I run Diskwarrior on the volume, the correct permissions for that volume will be restored. BUT...why is this happening?
I'm pretty obsessive about having having bootable backups and have been doing them for years and years. I don't ever remember this happening before. I'm pretty sure it wasn't happening when I was running 10.5.7. I upgraded to 10.5.8 about 3 weeks ago.
Finally, the permissions of these volumes will change even if I haven't done a backup. I'll just mount one of them and voila: the volume permissions have somehow changed since the last time.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

that is very strange because i have the opposite problem. The permissions of my actual hard drive keep changing from
my username: Read and Write (my actual admin username)
(unknown): Read and Write
everyone: Read only
to
system: Read and Write
admin: Read and Write
everyone: Read only
did you find out what was the source of your problem?

  • Why does the Volume Limit keep Changing?

Hello, I have an I-pod Classic 80 GB and the maxium volume limit will change from time to time on it's own. I want it at maxium so I go to volume settings move the little arrow to the limit and press the center to lock it in and fiddle with that stupid combination crap but it will never stay put! So, how can I keep the volume settings from changing?

    (a) You will always get a different client side port, that's normal.
    (b) the Registry port is 1099 but RMI servers are exported on a system-selected port unless you specify one. If your Registry and RMI servers are in the same JVM they can share ports

  • Volume tracks keep changing

    hi,
Although I don't have any automation or any continuos controller for the volume of the tracks they keep changing.
    any advice?
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem for SO long, until just now. Midi tracks would jump up in Volume at certain points, and I couldn't control.
Found the answer (for my issue, at least) here: http://www.logicprohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=71347
Now my remaining question is, how can I PREVENT Volume events from being written in? Cause looking at one midi track's events right now, I'd have to go thru the list and delete about 15 different volume events for the volume to not jump around on me...
I think I have Midi Volume assigned to a fader on my midi keyboard... not to figure out how to unlearn that assignment...

  • Permissions keep changing on a NAS volume?

I have an 8TB NAS with a few shares set up.  Randomly, a padlock appeared on the lower left corner of one of the shares' icon (my media share).  I can still access the share fine.  If I SSH into the NAS via Cyberduck, the permissions for the media share say "unknown".  I can change them to 777 recursively and the padlock disappears, for a few days, but eventually it comes back.  No one else has access to the share.  I don't get it.
    Any ideas?

That's doesn't sound like an issue with your Mac. What did the NAS vendor's tech support tell you?

  • Why do my disk permissions keep changing?

can someone please tell me how the permissions on my Macbook keep geting corrupted under normal use?   have been programming and traching UNIX in some form or another since 1983. I have never seen anything like  the conditions in OS X where this happens continually.
The disk repair messages seem absolutely bogus. Ho can something be listed as a file rw-r--r-- aand then say it is supposed to be a Directory! (drw-r--r--)
There has to be some kind o bug or OS X developers are very lax with their install/modificaton scripts.
Can someone enlighten me on this??
    Ed Kenny

I would seriously like to know the answer to this as well.
I never had a problem until recently. I am running 10.8.3, but have been for some time now.
A few weeks ago, I had an issue with permissions, came to the forum, saw someone's suggestion to "get info" and change the permission level. Somehow my name had been removed entirely and it was under something else like guest or something.
Tonight, I am working on labeling and moving some of my son's vacation photos - photos first installed over a year ago. I have been working on this folder and these photos, opening, viewing, moving, renaming etc. for 2 days - the same origin folder - with NO problem. Tonight, suddenly, several photos in, the next 3 photos in line say I don't have permission. It suggests I do "get info" and change the permissions. I do this, and there I am, my user name clear as day with both read AND write permissions already! I have read and write permissions visible for both these photos as well as the folder itself and even the dang hard drive and still it isn't letting me access MY files!

  • Permissions keep changing

Ok, I have owned 3 Macs in the past and I have never been so ready to chuck this brand new Mac Mini out the window. Here is what I got:
My wife does not have permission to view her pictures, music, itunes database, etc. she is an admin and in the file info I have to change the permissions file by file, if I change permissions on a folder and select apply to contents, it does not do so.
Also if I do this logged in as myself I will put her name in the permissions for read and write, select apply to folder contents, it just changes her name to mine so my name is on the list twice and hers is not there. This is very frustrating, any solutions?

Well after another 15 mins of research I found there is a bug in 10.6, I found the solution here:

  • Help-device permissions keep changing

    Hi All,
I am sure this is a simple issue, but let me explain quickly. Solaris 10 X86, Ultra 20, USB to Serial convertor, Serial barcode scanner.
Whan I connect it all together Solaris does just fine in configuring the device and creating link /dev/term/1, but when I change the permissions on the device(crw--w---- root:tty) so that "other" can read the device(crw--w-r-- root:tty) in a minute or 2 it reverts back to (crw--w---- root:tty).
How can I make this permanant?

    For reasons I can't explain.
I have found that it depends on what USB slot the USB to Serial converter is connected to. When I disconnected and placed it in a different USB location the permission on the device where created completely different.
    They are now crw-rw-rw- root:sys.
I started to think I was seeing things, but when I first tested it I must have gotten lucky and selected a port that worked the way I wanted.

  • How do you change volume permissions with Solaris Volume Manager?

(Previously posted in "Talk to the Sysop" - no replies)
I'm trying to set up Solaris 9 to run Oracle on raw partitions. I have my design nailed down and I have built all the raw partitions I need as soft partitions on top of RAID 1 volumes. All this is built using Solaris Volume Manager (SVM).
However, all the partitions are still owned by root. Before I can create my Oracle database, I need to change the owner of the Oracle partitions to oracle:oinstall. The only reference I found telling me how to do this was in a Sun Blueprint and it essentially said "You can't change volume permissions directly or permanently using SVM and chown will only remain effective until the next reboot. To make the changes permanent, you must modify /etc/minor_perm". Unfortunately, I can't find an example of how to do this anywhere and the online man pages are not particularly helpful (at least not to me).
I'd appreciate a quick pointer, either to a good online resource or, even better, a simple example. For background, the volumes Oracle needs to own are:
    /dev/md/rdsk/d101-109
    /dev/md/rdsk/d201-203
    /dev/md/rdsk/d301-303
    /dev/md/rdsk/d401-403
    /dev/md/rdsk/d501-505
I provide this information because I'd like to assign some, but not all, of the devices under /dev/md/rdsk to the oracle user and I was hoping some smart person out there could illustrate an approach using simle regular expressions, at which I'm horribly poor.
    Thanks in advance,
    Adrian

Ron, I feel your pain.  I just came from an HTC also and a lot of stuff with this iPhone is bugging the crap out of me.  Who makes a phone where you can't adjust the ringer and alert volumes independently?  Instead, I have to adjust the alert volume when it is active.  C'mon guys.  Get with the program.  You won a bunch of Android users over with the 4S, but you're going to chase us all back when we're done with our contract.  Frustrating.

  • Sound volume keeps changing

    Hi,
I bought my hp dm4-3055dx 2 weeks ago and I have problems with the sound ever since the beginning. I'm using the pre-installed Windows 7 64 bit OS.
The problem with the sound is the following: The sound volume keeps changing. Sometimes it seems to me that it's oscillating. The Windows volume (in the tray) is constant though. For example, when I turn the volume of my Winamp player to 1% the volume of the sound decreases, but after some seconds it starts increasing until it hits the Windows maximum volume, then it starts oscillating a little bit. Increasing the Winamp volume doesn't change anything, cause it's already the Windows maximum. But when I turn it down again, there's again a change. But as I described before, the volume will go up slowly to the Windows maximum. I have encountered the same problem with the VLC player, so I guess it's not a software problem.
I already downloaded the sound driver and installed it but there was no change. Any idea what that could be?
    Cheers

Any response here?  I am having the same problem in that the sound constantly fluctuates up and down as I am trying to listen, no matter if I listen through Spotify or ITunes.  It is very frustrating and I am seeing similiar posts for many models, especially considering this was marketed as a Beats Audio laptop with superior sound performance.  I have the Pavillion dm4-3055dx.

  • How can I view the boot volume permissions?

How can I view the boot volume permissions in the Terminal and/or Single User Mode?
I have tried: 'ls -l /Volumes' but this appears to only work for the non-boot volumes. I can test this by 'sudo chmod 777 /' followed by 'ls -l /Volumes' but the change is not reflected by the new list.

I prefer to have my bootable volumes as follows:
    drwxrwxr-x
I see no point in allowing others to write to / and sticky here often gets in my way. Can you see anything wrong with this?
I couldn't say, as I let Mac OS X do what it wants with the / root directory. I don't know how sticky can hurt, as you need to have elavated privs to do anything in root anyway.
But if it is working for you, have fun. Just make a note to yourself somewhere that you have made this change, so that if something stops working, you can take this change into consideration. And if this change does not cause problems, but does something useful for you, you can use the note to remind yourself that you need to re-make the change when installing a new system. So take notes on your changes. It will make your life easier in the future.

  • NetBoot Images not "seen" by MM / MBA when booting with ALT without any local bootable Volumes

    Hello Community!
I ran into a very odd Problem trying to start Production and Service Mac Minis or Mac Book Airs from our NetBoot Server holding the ALT Key while the Startup Chime sounds. Image selection is working fine if a local Volume is present. When no local bootable Volume is available the Macs will (in 90% of the Cases) stop responding at the point where the Bootpicker should show all available NetBoot Volumes. The dropdown menu for choosing a Wireless Network is popping up but after that the spinning wheel next to it stops and the Mac wont recognize any input from mouse or keyboard.
The EFI Startup environment is not totally stuck in these cases though, cause sometimes when you restart the NetBoot Service on the Server the NetBoot Volumes will popup on the clients screen.
If you hold the clients "N" key instead to Start Up from the Servers Default NB Image it works like a charm. Also all the other Mac Models have no problem at all Netbooting using the Bootpicker.
Among other things I already tried the following:
    - changing NBI index numbers
    - shortening Image names that are sent out by the Server at the BSDP ACK[LIST] step to reduce the packet size
    - deactivating all Netboot Images but one
    - setting up a second netboot Server and transferring half of the Images to it
the Netboot Log shows that the following client - server communication is repeated over an over:

  • [8.1 pro update1] Windows KEEPS changing and reinstalling keyboard layouts regardsless of IgnoreRemoteKeyboardLayout

Windows 8.1 is driving me nuts beyond believe once again. I have 8.1 Pro update 1 English, installed from the VLK iso from our Volume License / SPLA account. As we are a Dutch company, the Location is set to The Netherlands, as well as the date/time format.
Therefore in my keyboard settings the language is Dutch (NL) but I set my keyboard layout to US, as below:
As you can see there are no other languages our installed. This worked for years with Windows 7 and before with XP. Windows 8.1 however KEEPS changing my keyboard layout to plain Dutch making my keyboard unusable. The language bar in the systemtray, or whatever
it's called in this OS, shows THREE layouts, which are actually 'selectable' and work as if they were installed. However, they are not 'really' installed, as per the screenshots above.
This is driving me completely mad. Why on earth is Windows making descisions for me which I should be making myself? In addition, in my oppinion Windows should NEVER change somthing as trivial as a keyboard layout by itself. People don't change switch keyboard
even when logging on to a remote system that has a different layout configured. Whoever came up with this 'automatic switching per application' idea once again had no clue of real-life usage at all.
I've added those two languages I do NOT want to my keyboard layouts and removed them. Sure they are gone then, and as only language NLD with layout US is left, the language bar in systray is gone as well. After a few days all three are back, and my keyboard
    is producing wrong characters again.
I've tried with regvalue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout\IgnoreRemoteKeyboardLayout set to 1, to no avail at all. It just keeps changing. This should help to prevent my keyboard when changing when I RDP to one of my servers.
The advanced settings in Language don't help either:
'let me set a different input language for each app window' is unticked.
Override for default keyboard is now set to Dutch - US, like I want it. Doesn't help either.
I cannot reproduce it on demand, settings do NOT change when connecting to my RDP server(s). They do NOT change when I open any of my used programs, being IE, Chrome, CMD.exe, notepad and a few others. It shouldn't either as I disabled the 'keep settings
    per application'.
I have changed the keyboard shortcut from alt-shift or whatever it was to 'none'.
How to prevent Windows 8.1 completely from changing the keyboard layout I use? Is there any way to check WHY or WHAT actually changes my keyboard?

This might be really late to this post but I've been having this issue while playing games, particularly those which are complex enough to require Control, Alt, Shift. At first like some people here suggested
Windows Key + Space was the cause, but even after removing all alternate layouts (for reference, I want the UK layout, but it was switching to the US Layout) it was persisting.
This post pointed me in the right direction, go into your Language Options
    > Change Override (Advanced). At this stage I've noticed there is the Switching input methods section, look for
Change language bar hot keys and here I fount Alt + Shift
was being used for switching Between input languages - a key combo I'd probably hit quite often just purely by accident. You can change the key sequence to no binds.
I haven't fully tested it, but it appears to be working for now - and I hope its an extra option for people to look at if they're running into this issue.

  • Messages Buddies window keeps changing size

The buddies list in Messages keeps growing longer and longer for me. Is there a way to make it stay the size that I want it to be?

    Hi,
It is a bit odd that you have that many Buddies that have gone Idle rather than showing any that are Away.
However it does not seem you have that many Buddies in total that would make a difference.
I notice that in the View Menu > Show Buddy Pictures is Off.
This as you will have found out does allow more Buddies in the space you have allowed. (each line is only as big as the Video and Audio Only icons)
If you make the Buddy List smaller than what you have shown (i.e. hide the Off Line group title bar and a few of the Buddies) does the Scroll bar appear ?
I don't Display the Off Line Buddies and also don't use the Off Line Group from them either. I am wondering if your setting are what makes the Buddy List dynamic in size.
    My test.
I tried setting my Buddy lists with no pics.
I also set the Off Line Buddies and as a Group and "turned" the reveal triangle so they were hidden like yours.
I they set a couple of other AIM Buddy Lists to Off line.
Then I resized the buddy List to not shoe the Off Line Groups Title bar and also a few buddies up from that.
I then set the Off Line accounts to Available and logged them in.
In my Buddy list more Buddies dropped out of sight and the List did not resize.
Can you open a Finder window ?
Then go to the View Menu  and chose Show Path Bar.
This will add some info  across the bottom of the Window.
Can you also Select View Menu > Show View Options and Select the Modified option in the Show Column choices.
Now in the Finder > Go Menu hold down the ALT key and select the Library item that appears.
    Navigate to the Preferences
    Find the com.apple.ichat.plist one.
Alter the size of the Buddy List  Or chose to Show Pictures and see if the Modified Date Changes (it should show the Time fro today's change).
The setting you are changing (window Size and what the window contains) are written to this .plist - or they ar if you Own like you should do and have Write Permissions (as well as Read ones) if the file settings are correct.
If you have lost Ownership of this File and changes will not be written to it.
It may be the Permissions have changed and you have lost the right to Write to it.
To find out, do a Get Info (CMD + i keys together) when the file is highlighted.
At the bottom of the Info panel is the Ownership and Permission Details.
Your shortname should appear in the list with Read and Write Permissions.
If you highlight this line and then use the Cogwheel icon at the bottom it should list "Make yourshortname (Me) the Owner" but it should be greyed out as it is already done.

  • Permissions Mysteriously Changed

I regularly access my second hard drive (internal) but, suddenly today the permissions have changed. I have no idea why. What's worse is that I can't change them back. Under all categories, it is now on "custom". When I try to change them, it goes straight back to "custom". The icon of the second HD has a lock on it now and when I try to open it, I am told that I don't have sufficient access privileges.
I don't understand how this could possible happen. I have made no major changes to anything and nobody has been in my home to hack my computer.
    Can anyone help?
    Mark.

    Glad things are working again!
A further caveat if you did an Archive and Install rather than an Erase and Install - When you clicked "Apply to Enclosed Items" it presumably affected everything on the HD, and as I had mentioned earlier, an Archive and Install, preserving Users, might not fix the ownership and permissions on your Home folder and its contents. Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions won't fix a Home folder either. The startup volume was owned by System; your user account should own everything in your Home folder. A further wrinkle, which pushes my limited knowledge of Unix, is that the permissions on the startup volume include a set "sticky bit", and this might also have gotten transmitted everywhere else, leading to potential problems when deleting things.
I would do a Get Info now on your Home folder and on a few of your files and folders within it, and make sure you are listed at the top of the permissions list, with read-write privileges. "System" should not appear there. If there does seem to be a problem with the ownership and permissions of your home folder, [this post by V.K.|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10885473&#10885473] in the thread I had listed earlier describes how to fix it.
