Bootcamp 2nd monitor resolution changes upon restart

Here's my problem:
I have 3 monitors connected to my Mac Pro (specs listed below).  Whenever I restart in Windows 7 (drivers updated, installed monitor control panel, Mac drivers updated) one of my monitors always gets screwed up with the resolution.  I have 2 22" monitors and 1 28" monitor.  The one that always gets messed up is the 22" screen with a resolution at 1680x1080.  Windows 7 detects the resolution being about 600x800 or something.  To fix this, I have to unplug the mini dvi port from the computer and simply plug it back in.  The monitor instantly goes back to full resolution and then I have no issues until I restart again.
I don't seem to have issues if I leave 1 22" monitor and the other 28" monitor plugged in.  This only happens when I have all 3 connected.
I've tried numerous times to update drivers and download the graphic card control panels, but none of it seems to help.
Would anyone have a clue as to why this happen?

Strange. I naturally assumed that it would be the HDMI socket that has this issue.
Did a little digging and found this by Mr Grand Bennett. It was here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2746930?start=0&tstart=0
A related topic, but the same fundamental issues is being discussed nearby:
Can I use all three ports on the ATI Radeon HD 5770?
The movie version is that Mini DisplayPort does not convert directly to DVI, and the card cannot run three displays reliably unless you are using ACTIVE or POWERED adapters to convert to HDMI or DVI, which provide active conversion.
This is not your Mac Pro model, but you ARE using its display card, so these DO apply:
Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Early 2009): Issues with three displays and multiple DVI, HDMI connections
Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations

  • Screen resolution changed upon awake; old resolution no longer available

My new MSI Z97 i7 mobo based Windows TP woke from sleep this morning, with the resolution changed to 1024x768.
When I went to change it back to 1920x1200, that resolution is not available; only 1920x1024, and the screen looks odd. Unless advised otherwise, I will try to re-install the display drivers that came w/ the mobo, to get the display correct again. Otherwise,
    really liking Win10

    Hello Giggirock,
Firstly, i would take the display and conect it to another machine. See if you can achieve this resolution with another computer. If the same problem occurs, i would say its the controller board on the LCD. if the resolution was there(on the other computer) then u may have a problem with the video card in your computer.
try this out, and let me know how you go

  • Unexplained Monitor Resolution Change

I just experienced a bizzare occurrence where upon booting my G3 Powermac running Sys 9.2, the screen resolution on my Princeton VL2018W came up as the coarse 640 X 480 resolution. The G3 has a ATI Rage 128y graphics cards w/16MB of VRAM and this coarse resolution now displaying is a complete departure from what I am accustomed to. I've been enjoying for many years a beautiful crisp, sharp, proportional resolution however I have no idea just what that was prior to this anomaly.
I immediately went to the Control Strip and clicked on the wavy screen monitor icon to attempt to get back to my original resolution... however my attempts at several RECOMMENDED resolutions in the queue gave me mixed results. All of them however failed to return my screen to the crisp, proportional resolution I have become accustomed to.
The closest to the original appearance is 1280 X 960 or 1280 X 1024 BUT both of those display the text with an almost smeared appearance. The letters and lines are indistinct & fuzzy and the screen is stretched horizontally. I regularly draw with an object oriented application and when I called up one of my drawings... the circles appear as ellipses and squares appear as rectangles. I measured one screen object that was supposed to be a square and in 1280 X 960 it measured 2-1/2" horizontally by 2-3/32" vertically and in 1280 X 1024 it was off even more... measuring 2-1/2" horizontally by 1-15/16" vertically. Whatever my screen resolution was previous to this anomaly it had PERFECT proportion... a circle was a circle and squares were squares! This is as puzzling to me as it is
unacceptable. I can't produce work with it like this.
In attempting to explore some other listed higher resolutions I typically got a screen saying OUT OF FREQUENCY or when the screen did come up with a display... it had a strange patch of angled lines that would obscure a portion of the underlying graphic. I learned my Princeton VL2018W monitor has a native resolution of 1680 X 1050 with an aspect ratio of 16:10. This 1680 X 1050 resolution is not among those listed in the Manager.
I'm an application user... not a computer whiz. I'm completely baffled by this occurrence and at a loss as how to correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, senna12625 -
First, try replacing the internal battery in your B&W G3. When that battery gets too weak or is dead, the machine has a problem retaining info in PRAm; one of the items maintained in PRAM is the monitor setting.
This setting is used during the startup of the machine until the actual prefs settings become available, at which time the machine should revert to the original monitor setting. Since it does not return, it may indicate that the preference file is damaged somehow.
There are two preference files which may pertain - Display Preferences, which can be found loose in the Preferences folder in System Folder; and Monitors Preferences, which can be found in the Monitors Preferences folder in Preferences folder in System Folder.
Try throwing away those two preference files, and restarting. On this restart reset the PRAM -
Article #HT1379 - How to Reset PRAM and NVRAM
Once the machine is back up and usable, try making an appropriate change in the Monitors control panel.
If you have a Monitors & Sound control panel in addition to a separate Monitors control panel and a separate Sound control panel, disable the Monitors & Sound control panel - that combination control panel has limited application, and can conflict with the separate control panels.
In the Monitors control panel you can choose to view resolution choices as All instead of Recommended - there's a pulldown menu just above the list of resolutions to make that choice. If yours is set to Recommended, change it to All - doing so may allow you to regain access to the optimum resolution for that monitor.

  • Yosemite 10.3.3 2nd monitor resolution problem

I just updated to the new Yosemite 10.3.3 on my Mac Pro 2011 and my second monitor will not let me choose my correct display resolution. It only lets me choose 1080i, 1080p, 720p. It worked fine at 1920x1080 before the update and filled the screen correctly but now i have the TV top and bottom black bars on the monitor and is driving me nuts. The monitor i am using is a production monitor JVC DT-V20L3DY.  I have tried the restart and the button inside and same thing. Any ideas how to fix this?

I have the same issues with the 10.10.3 release, running on an older (2009) MacBook Pro.  Graphics system for mine is the NVIDA GeForce 9400M chipset.  Touchstone is spot on, the 10.10.3 build does not seem to have a selection in the scaled display settings for 1920x1080.
However, on a much older iMac, (2007?) I have, this is not the case.  I'm running Dell S2490W Monitors as secondary on both systems, and the iMac build has retained the correct scaled resolution of 1920x1080 as an option.  This option does not appear on the MacBook pro load.  Obviously, this worked properly until the update (in 10.10.2) on my MacBook Pro
I suspect we have a driver issue with out MacBook Pro graphics chiptset and the 10.10.3 release.  I would love to hear from the community if this is a common problem.  I would hate to hear a "We don't support that hardware anymore"!

  • Screen resolution changes on restart

I have my screen resolution set to 1680*1050 on my 2014 rMBP. When I reboot my the machine, it switches back to 1440*900, or even lower. On 10.10.1 the resolution would return to normal past the login screen. Not with 10.10.2: I have to manually turn the screen resolution to 1680*1050 after a reboot. I do not use any external displays. Does anyone else experience the same problem?

    Greetings cubic_p,

  • Helix can't boot without a 2nd monitor attached

    Hi,
I maintain a Helix (36984RU) that gets used for presentations.  It will not boot to Windows without a second monitor attached.   I can hear the fan spin up and the unit gets warm, but the screen remains blank.  The only thing I can do is to shutdown by holding down the power button.
When booting with a 2nd monitor or projector attached, the startup Lenovo logo appears on the 2nd screen and the laptop screen remains blank.  When the Windows login screen appears, it appears correctly on the laptop screen.  I've checked the Windows Screen Resolution page and it correctly shows the laptop monitor as the primary monitor.
This issue presents itself whether or not I disconnect the 2nd monitor prior to shutdown/restart, or whether I remove the 2nd monitor before restart.  It also does not make a difference if I start in tablet or docked mode.
I've updated the BIOS to version 1.29 and have checked that the boot display device is set to Thinkpad LCD, and not either of the two displayport options.
Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks!

I don't know what it is - I have Enable Transmit on the Program monitor to enable it to do so, and I can't go back to 7.0 or 6.0 as I'm now working on projects in 7.0.1 and don't want to keep chopping and changing.

  • IMac monitor goes dark; 2nd monitor ok

I have a dual monitor setup on my iMac (2009) running Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  The iMac monitor had been working great, but now it goes to a black screen.  I am able to access it briefly (for about a second) by lightly pressing the power button on the back.  The iMac monitor flashes on briefly when I do this and I'm able to quickly click on user.  I used this same method to open Settings and drag it over to the 2nd monitor to change the display setting to Mirror mode, so I'd have access to the dock on the 2nd monitor (Dell 2007WFP).
I have tried the following so far:
         checked cables
restarted by powering off, pressing on/off button for 5 seconds, unplugging for 15 seconds.
         booted in Safe Mode
reset PRAM (I believe this was reset, but I don't know for sure because I couldn't see anything on the monitors.)
    Other information:
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
         8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
         NVIDIA GeForce 9400
Thank you in advance for help with this issue!

Replacing FBDIMMs would be today inexpensive and worth doing.
No one knows if heat is an issue without your using thermal sensor monitor. Probably want to up the default fan speeds while at it.
And because you don't have Lion+ then even more reason to setup a small maintenace volume on another drive with OS X basic system for repairs. In fact you should always have a bootable backup or two  you can rely on.
Restarting may work, or it  may be you have now new issue with corrupt fies or directory that a safe boot even is no guarantee of fixing.
When in doubt, try a clean new OS install on another drive.
    And FBDIMMs: $25 for a 2x2GB set on Amazon.com
You want to get  the most out of what  you have, a small investment  in RAM,  maybe recycle those drives for 2-4TB units. And an SSD will have system responding better and perform better.
My guess, the 5870 wasn't needed and was overkill and a 5770 for almost  half would have been more than adequate.

  • T43 extended desktop (2nd monitor) maxes at 1280x768

I use an HD Flat panel TV with computer monitor capability as a 2nd monitor for extending my desktop.  This 2nd monitor has a very high resolution capability (the manual recommends a setting of 1920x1080 for computer connections).  The T43 display settings dialogue limits this second monitor to 1280x768 pixels, even though it allows much higher resolutions for the T43's built-in screen (I currently run at 1400x1050).
I see no Lenovo driver updates that address resolution issues for a 2nd monitor, but would really like to take advantage of a higher 2nd monitor resolution in my work.  Am I limited by my video hardware, video driver, BIOS, or what?  Is there a solution to my problem?

  • How do you determine correct monitor resolution

monitor resolution changes in system preferences is not restting the display back to correct resolution.
how do i determine the correct setting so the desktop image is not running off the sides of the screen?

do you choose the "best for display" radio button ?
for me that set the correct resolution
of cause if you set it to mirror it will not be it's native resolution if the display it's mirroring is in a lower resolution

  • Windows 10 shows the 2nd monitor has 1920x1080 but actually it is 50% less around 1080x840

The resolution of the 2nd monitor, a Vizio VF551XVT 55-inch 1920x1080 HDTV connected through HDMI cable, shows 1920x1080 (Recommended) on the Windows 10’s Display Screen Resolution setting utility but the true resolution of the 2nd monitor is less than 50%; around 1080x840. All applications on the 2nd monitor displayed their header & boarder frames twice wider on screen, which waste/occupy lots of the 2nd monitor’s display area. Please advise how to correct this critical lower than the set/expected resolution problem of th 2nd monitor.  Thanks. The 1st/primary monitor in this case is a mobile PC Display (1920x1080), Lenovo Z710 Intel i7 4710MQ notebook with NVIDIA 840M GPU. Previously running under the Windows 8.1 OS with the same configuration, the 2nd monitor resolution was also displayed incorrectly but just initially right after the Windows 8.1 reboot, i.e. 2nd monitor shows 1920x1080 resolution but actually the 2nd monitor is about the same as Windows 10, the actual resolution is much/50% fewer than 1920x1080. However, the resolution of the 2nd monitor (HDTV) under Windows 8.1 can be corrected (worked around) by switching the main display from 1st to 2nd monitor, then switching main display back from 2nd to 1st, but such Win 8.1 work around doesn't work for Windows 10 OS . Also, please advise whether Lenovo, MS Windows or NVIDIA is responsible for the displays re-position issue. The re-position issue is, when a TV, PC, shared 2nd monitor is disconnected to watching TV, etc., Windows OS currently moves all the display positions, both active and minimized displays, from 2nd monitor to 1st/main monitor, but ideally would be just moving/re-position the active displays to the main/1st monitor and maintain/leave those minimized display positions intact, so when 2nd monitor reconnects back (done watching TV), user doesn’t need to re-align all the displays back to 2nd monitor again. Thanks for helps.

If you won't lose anything and if it is not a big hassle, I would re-install.
Mainly because Win 10 TP is, after all, a beta OS. Too many possibilities of bugs and glitches. It is better off to reinstall.
The latest build 9879 has a ISO download link. Use the ISO and burn it to a bootable DVd. Then use the DVD to do a clean reinstall.

  • Restart GKrellm on screen resolution change in KDE

    Hi all!
Any trusty GKrellm wizards still out there? Or KDE mastahs?
I much prefer GKrellm and dockapps for my system monitor needs and currently use the former as a panel in the top right corner on my KDE 4.5 desktop. It works great except for screen resolution changes where switching from larger to smaller resolutions and vice versa breaks the alignment to the right border of the screen.
My question is if there is a lean way, either through GKrellm, KDE or even bash/d-bus or similar to restart GKrellm (which is fast and good enough a solution for me) when I change resolution? Any ideas?
I wish KDE had as an option for "on resolution change, execute X". Come to think of it, I would like KDE to offer this option for power management state switches as well. Hmm, perhaps there should be a generalized "state-based" daemon for launching arbitrary external commands in KDE much like the tools available on Android phones these days, like Tasker, Locale and Setting Profiles...

No hints for how to do this? What about in Gnome?

  • 2nd display resolution 1440x900 and cannot be changed!

I have connected a 2nd display to my laptop using Toshiba DynaDock.  The monitor is an Acer S200 with native resolution of 1600x900. Monitor is connected to DynaDock by DVI cable. However I cannot get the monitor to display in 1600x900.  The maximum available is 1440x900. I am sure that when I first plugged in the monitor using VGA that I could get 1600x900 resolution.  At some point this stopped. I really don't know if it has to do with switching to the DVI cable. I am running Windows 8.1.  The S70 laptop has a 17" display at 1600x900. I'm also confused by the display adapters.  The laptop has an AMD Radeon Graphics adapter.  However, it appears that this is not being used.  When I right click on laptop display, I get the HD Intel Graphics adapter control. This adapter has no idea that there is another monitor attached.  It only controls the built in display. I can access the AMD Radeon Catalyst Control center by right clicking on 2nd display, then click Graphics Properties. This opens the AMD Catalyst Control center.  However there is nothing within the CCC that allows me to select a resolution.  If I click Screen Resolution from right click on 2nd display, I get a window "Change the appearance of your displays". This shows 2 monitors. #1 is Mobile PC Display, 1600x900, Landscape, Extend these displays. #2 is "No Monitor", 1440x900, Landscape, Extend these displays. If I open the DynaDock Display Link Manager (version 7.7.60366.0) , I see 2. Dynadock U3.0. This opens a set of options. If I click screen resolution, there is a list of available options.  The list jumps from 1440x900 to 1600x1200.  There is no option for 1600x900.  If I click any resolution above 1440x900, the "Input Not Supported" message appears on the monitor. Once again, I want to display my 2nd monitor at 1600x900 resolution, but I cannot figure out how to do that. Please help.

  • Resolution won't stay on "Default for display" setting upon restart

I have a Macbook Pro 13" 2014 edition with Yosemite.
I have a problem in that my Macbook won't stay on the "Default for Display" option upon re-starting... Each time I restart the machine, I have to manually select this option (and then it works fine). Upon reboot, it always starts up as "Scaled". What can I do to make it start up as "Default for Display"?
I noticed this problem started happening a few weeks ago when I had connected my MBP to an external projector. I did have to change around the display settings then. But now that I don't have it connected to any external display, i'd like it to default to "Default for Display" upon re-starting.

Thanks for that... It led to me solving the issue.
If you care to know the full story... Once I did those steps, I realized something important I didn't notice before... Upon restart, the machine would indeed to startup in "best for display"... You can tell by the "high resolution" of the background image and dock-icons, etc... The screen would then flicker for a second and would go to "low resolution". That led me to thinking it was one of my startup apps that was causing the problem... And thus not related to my connecting to a projector like I thought, nor to the actual restart of the machine itself. I then discovered the problem app ("iDisplay") and removed it from my "login apps"... and problem solved.
    Thanks!
