Bootcamp & 3tb non fusion drive - Windows 8.0 and 8.1

Is it true that on an IMAC 2013 with 3 tb non fusion drive it is possible to install, via bootcamp, windows 8.0 and not 8.1. I have read on internet a lot of discussions about the the 3tb problem and the fusion problem, but only speaking about the windows 8.1.
Besides if you read on the release notes of bootcamp 5.1 seem Aplle solved both problems related to 3tb and fusion drive; is this solution related only to windows 8.0 ?
Please, can someone give me a clear statement about this before buy the IMAC and windows?

my imac 21" mid 2011 run windows 8.1 update 1 just fine
got it with Lion
installed windows7 64bit ultimate from dvd in bootcamp
updated to mtn lion
updated digital windows 8 on win7
updated to maverics
updated digital windows 8.1
updated digital windows 8.1 update 1

  • Restoring Time Machine from non-fusion drive to a Fusion Drive

I have a mid 2010 iMac (1TB HDD—before they had fusion drives) that I'm thinking of upgrading to the new iMac w/Fusion Drive because it's having hardware issues. I do a lot of development and have installed numerous packages and server configurations, of which I've been terrible at cataloging, so I'm hoping to simply do a full restore of the system from my Time Machine backup.
I've done Time Machine restores before, but I'm not sure if it will work properly. I think I remember reading (back when fusion drives came out) that time machine restores that originated on non-fusion drives can't be restored onto fusion drives. After doing a few searches I can't find reference to that, but I have this nagging memory of reading that at some point. Is this true? If I get a fusion drive will I need to start the system new? If so, will I be able to at least restore my home directory files?
    Thanks!

A Fusion Drive won't behave any differently than you expect.

  • Mavericks, 3TB Fusion Drive, Windows 8 (again!)

I am so confued now, my head is spinning.
I have read probably 18 different posts now on how to install Windows 8 on a 3TB fusion drive, and none of them are complete, or give a step by step.  I'm on a new late 2013 model iMac running Mavericks 10.9.1.
Is there a way to just wipe the whole thing, (after creatin a Mavericks boot disc, I would assume), blow away the current configuration and just re-set it up so that windows gets 4th partition on "core data" volume?
    Here's my rundown:
    - Boot camp assistant runs, creates windows partition, but then partition is inaccessible for install by windows. (GPT)
    - Disk ultility fails to create a new partition if the first mac partition (the main one) after downsizing the main OS X partition
    - No further partitions can be created beyond a second Mac partition in disc ultilty.
Fortunately my OS X Mavericks is still working, but my partitions are now what looks like a mess.
In the debug mode of disc utility:
    Macintosh HD (Mounted)
    EFI (unmounted)
    Macintosh HD (Mounted)
    BOOT OS X (Mounted)
    EFI (unmounted)
    Macintosh HD (unMounted)
    Recovery HD (unmounted)
I'm about ready to take it to the apple store and jusrt ask if they can thrown in a regular drive, or if they can fix it.  My fear is that if I can't fix it, neither can they.
Anyone find a way to do this?
I found one article that showed an unsupported methog using a time machine backup, but Mavericks has already failed to use my Mountain Lion backup (I had to recover the data manually) so I can't really use it to re-setup this mac.
if anyone has a "clean" install method, please do share!  I'll buy you beer.  Seriously.
    Thanks!

OK, I managed to get the computer back to "stock".
I had to used system rescue CD (it's a Linux tool with Gparted) to blow away all the messed up partitions on the 2.7GB hard drive (part of the fusion drive).
Next, I created a bootable USB by downloading the Mavericks installer app from the app store, and then reloaded OS X.  I had to use disc utility to do this, and disc utility picked up the missing and incorrect partitions, and recreated all of it. (There are a lot of steps involved here...)
Anyway, I got back to square 1.
Again, I tried to use bootcamp assistant to install Windows 8, and now it is failing on the partition selection screen. Windows can't install because the bootcamp partition is labled as disc1, and windows can only install on disc zero.
    Next?

  • Fusion Drive & Window 8 Pro

    Hi,
Does Windows 8 Pro supports "Fusion Drive"?
How does Windows 8 Pro work on a "Fusion Drive"?
And, is it "wrong" to "Zero Out" a SSD(or Fusion Drive) too often?
    Thanks.
    Ed

How are you installing it? Are you using Bootcamp Assistant or are you using a virtual Machine?
If using Bootcamp Assistant visit the Bootcamp forum where Windows 8 and fusion drives are frequently discussed. https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp
If using a virtual machine, Windows 8 then visit the virtual machine's web site for Windows 8 instructions.

  • How to restore a 3TB imac fusion drive back to its original state?

I bought a 27"imac with a 3TB fusion drive which stopped working. Ended up having to boot from the internet and since my HD stopped working and wasn't being found by disk utility I erased it using Disk Utility an re-installed OS X. Did OSX automatically get installed in the 128gb SSD drive (under disk util i only see one macintosh hard drive with another one under its first branch but there is no separate ssd drive)?
Also, since then my imac's hard drive haven't stopped making a constant cranking noise as if it's working non-stop (unless the computer goes into sleep mode). Is this normal? Anything I can do to bring it back to its original state?

The problem is that I bought my computer in the US and brought it with me to my home in Brazil and over here it's going to take a long time to get it fixed or repair/replace parts if it's necessary. Any other procedure I can try on my own before throwing the towel and taking it in?
    Thanks

  • Backup and Restore image fails 3TB Advanced Format Drive Windows 7-32 SP1

Windows native backp fails to create an System Image, or a Complete PC Backup.
This occurs in Windows 7, 64 bit Professional, Windows 7, 32bit Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, 32 bit. It occurs in 6 different computers I've tried. All the backup drives are 3TB. I have tried Seagte USB and Hitachi USB drives. 4 of them. The Windows
7 Ultimate, 32bit machine has SP1. All operating systems are using the current Service Packs, and all of the MS Updates including all of the recommended harware drivers. All of the systems are using the latest BIOS, firmware and OEM drivers as well.
It looks like the issue may be causes by a deficiency in Windows related to the Advanced Format drive spec. All of the computers that qualified had the AF hotfix applied; Advanced Format Drives 512e 4k, Vista
    and 2008 - KB2470478, Windows 7, and 2008 R2 KB982018
    Error messages follow:

Error message: One of the backup files could not be created. (0x8078002A)
The request could not be perfomed because of an I/O error. (0x8007045D)
This deficiency seems to apply across the board to different hardware manufacturers of external hard drives.
From what I have heard, Western Digital may have a format utility that addresses this issue, but only for WD drives.
    Help.

    Hi David,
Did you have found any error message?
Check if all the files have been created on the hard drive.
Check the Volume shadow copy service in services window. To check follow these steps:
    i.
Click Start and type services.msc in the search box
    ii.
Search for the Volume shadow copy service
Make sure the start- up type is automatic.  Steps to set the services to automatic
    i.
    Search for the service
    ii.
    Right click on the service
    iii.
If the service is stopped then Start the service
    iv.
    Select Properties
    v.
And in the Start-up type select Automatic
This is the most definitive answer I can find so am taking this as the answer.

  • Fusion drive lack of response and system freeze

I have a 2013 iMAC with fusion drive.
I find that I get very slow response when I open a folder in finder - it takes anything up to 10 seconds for the contents of that folder to be displayed.  I also get the system just hang when I do simple photoshop work.
    Can anyone help?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • 2 hard drives - Windows on one and OSX on the other

I currently have one 750gb spinning HDD with Windows on a Boot Camp partition in my MacBook. I am thinking of getting a new 256gb SSD and making it a OSX only drive. Once I get that setup, I would like to get rid of the SuperDrive and install my old HDD as a 2nd drive and use it to boot to Windows.
Can I have 2 hard drives with one booting to OSX and one booting to Windows? Will I have to reformat/reinstall Windows on the 2nd drive or will it recognize the old Windows bootcamp partition?

Install the OS X drive in place of the optical drive. Windows will not boot from an external drive, and it may treat the optical drive as an external device. If you are willing, then experiment the other way around to be sure Windows will boot from the optical drive connection.

  • Compiz-fusion + gtk-window-decorator minimize and maximize missing

I am running GNOME using x64 at work, and here since the upgrade to 2.24, my minimize and maximize buttons are missing using the GTK-window-decorator in Compiz.
I have had this problem at home using my i686 system when I used the testing repository, but the problem was fixed in the packages that entered the extra repository.
Now I wonder why this problem still exists in the x64 packages. I did not test the former testing packages because I have to do my daily work on this pc.
Please help me. Is there a broken package that was not fixed in the x64 repo or do I need to do something myself?
Last edited by PJGrefhorst (2008-10-27 10:19:46)

I solved the problem myself. The compiz-decorator-gtk needs to be rebuild against the new metacity and compiz. Please replace the package!

  • How to reset 3TB fusion drive to original partition scheme

When I first purchased my 27" iMac in early 2013 I was unable to use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition (with the version of OSX it shipped with bootcamp was initially disabled but added in an update later).  I found a guide online for untangling the Fusion Drive partitions and essentially setting up bootcamp manually.
However, a few days ago I had Windows 8 get screwed up and needed to reformat.  I figured that since Apple now updated Mavericks to allow my machine to use bootcamp I would start from scratch and do it properly.  The problem is, I cannot seem to get my machine back into a "factory default" setup.  I tried removing the CoreStorage volume and letting the Disk Utility tool "reset" the drive, and that -seemed- to work.  I had one 3TB partition (according to the GUI) and re-installed OSX.  I used Bootcamp to split 2TB for Windows (games) and leave 1TB for Mac.  Everything went fine and I restarted into the Win8 installer.  However, at this point Windows refused to install to the 2TB partition.  I tried formatting it, and delete/create but it said it couldn't install to that partition.  The confusing part is that according to Windows I had about 8 partitions (EFI and Recovery I understand but the rest I don't know the reason for).
So now I'm back at the OSX Recovery and this is what "diskutil list" is giving me.  Why are there all these 524.3 KB partitions?  I can't seem to remove or merge them.  I know I should have recorded what the original structure is, but it's too late now.  Can someone tell me what the 3TB Fusion Drive *should* look like, and how I can get back to that?

  • Will VMware or Parallels work for a 3TB fusion drive?

I'm in the market for an iMac but I need windows for work-related stuff (and some games)
I have an older macbook pro (13" the first year the 13" went pro, 2009 i think) and I load windows through bootcamp, so no problems there.
I understand that the 3TB fusion drive won't work with bootcamp so my only option seems to be either VMware or Parallels (i haven't used either of these) to load Windows 7.
Just wanted to ask to make sure that there is no limitation with a 3TB fusion drive and VMware or Parallels.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Scott

There are limitations with either choice you make.
With boot camp, that is where you partition the drive to install windows and have a dual boot system, and a fusion drive windows will be installed on the rotating standard drive only. Not utilizing the ssd flash storage at all.
If you go with a virtual machine install of windows in either parallels, vmware fusion or the free vm program virtualbox from oracle the limitation are in the virtual hardware used. Most specifically in the virtual video card all of the virtual machine program use. So if you are using graphic programs the preformance in a vm will be lower then if windows was in it own partition and using the real hardware in the system. On the plus side for a virtaul machine install of windows is that you can run both os x and windows at the same time, windows and the virtaul machine program might be placed on the ssd part of the fusion drive and will actuall run faster then if it was in its own partition on the standard rotating hard drive.

  • If I install Windows 7 on iMac (what we have done many times and it works very good) does windows support the fusion drive?

if I install Windows 7 on iMac (what we have done many times and it works very good) does windows support the fusion drive?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Fusion Drive is created by software on OS X. On a computer with Fusion Drive, Windows is installed on the HDD, but when you install the Boot Camp drivers, you will be able to read Macintosh HD, so it looks like it supports Fusion Drive but only for read

  • Fusion drive & dual boot

Is it possible on a fusion drive to have Maverick and Windows at the same time? Is it going to work the same way on windows ( I mean as fast as in osx)

    Michael Conelly wrote:
After much gnashing of teeth, and a half dozen support calls, I'd all but given up.  I finally seem to have solved this though - sort of - by installing windows 8.1 on boot camp on an older iMac, then cloning the bootcamp disk to an external thunderbolt drive via Winclone.  That worked seamlessly, sticking to winclone's instructions, and I can boot via EFI to Windows 8.1 on the new iMac.  So far so good.
I usually install W8.1 via EFI by using DU and a Free Space partition. The 3TB Fusion is first split into the underlying SSD/HDD physicals. OSX and Windows OSes are installed on SSD via EFI (no BCA). The OSX part and half the HDD are then used to create a new CS volume. The other HDD half becomes NTFS for non-Windows OS files. The Hybrid MBR method is completely unsatisfactory with the 3TB Fusion drive.
How is the TB/Winclone image for performance of the OS (since pagefile.sys is also on the TB)?
