Bootcamp 4, Windows 7, Time machine disk
Hi,
I'm currently having an weird issue with Windows 7 x64 on my Macbook Pro.
I'm getting a bluescreen of death each time my USB Time Machine disk is connected.
Any other HFS+ disk doesn't make Windows crash, it's only the Time Machine disk.
I've try with Bootcamp 3.2 and i'm getting the same issue.
The only think I can see is the upgrade of Lion who modify my Time Machine disk.

The version you have downloaded is an upgrade one, and you need a PC with Windows to download and burn it to a DVD or USB drive. You can't do it with your Mac, as it's a EXE file. Also, you can't use it legally unless you have already Windows on the computer

Time Machine Disk Crashes Windows
Hi everyone,
When booting into Windows, I have been getting a blue screen and crash. I noticed that this problem goes away when I remove the Time Machine disk from my machine. The disk is mounted internally in my Mac Pro, so it is a little inconvenent to have to remove it everytime I boot into windows. Any ideas?
The same issue was raised here by another user, but no responses, so was hoping that maybe there's an answer now. Thanks!!

But if I click on "Manual Setup," it will time out. If I try to restart the router from the menu bar option, it will time out. The only way to fix it is to manually unplug the router and restart it that way. Is anyone else having a similar issue, or know how to prevent it?
That, I suspect, is a different problem (and mostly out of my area).

Why do I have time machine disk problem after closing and later reopening clamshell.
I consistently see the following after closing and later reopening my Macbook Pro (5,1). I have to unplug and replug my Time Machine USB drive.
The only thing new is Mountain Lion. The Time Machine disk has 229 GB free of 1.5 TB. I never had to unplug this drive under Lion.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I ran disc repair on Time Machine Drive yesterday, but it found nothing.
Here is what I see:

(Window 2)The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:

5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.

Time machine disk permissions changed to read only
Somehow, my Time Machine disk permissions have now changed tand my backups are failing;
The permissions are:
Me - read/write, Staff - read/write, Everyone - read only. I clicked on the lock and entered my system password, but I cannot change anything.
Then I ran Disk Utilities to repair and verify. Still nothing. I rebooted, logged out, logged back in, etc.
There is plenty of space left on the 2 GB drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex drive.This seems to be a new problems that has not surfaced before. My backups always ran flawlessly.

Time Machine Disk can be attached to LAN and still be used with TM?
I had many Time Machine's Backups with an external Western Digital USB Drive.
Now I had purchased a LaCie 2big Network. I use it for my Windows XP Network.
This Lacie has 2 Usb ports. It can be configured to use external disk also with time machine.
I would like to know if I can use my disk without lose my last TM backups.
I asked to Lacie support team if I could use my Western Digital without lose alla my previous backups.
They did tell me that they do not offer support for Time Machine problems.
I would like to try, but I quit fear to lose everything...
Did anyone tried to connect an "already time machined" disk to network and use time machine again directly from LAN?
Thank you...first, i should mention that TM backups to NAS devices are not officially supported. the only exception is a Time Capsule and it also works with drives attached via USB to an Airport Extreme Base station. some 3rd party NAS devices claim to support TM backups. your does claim it which means that it should work. however, if you move your current TM drive to be plugged into the Lacie NAS you'll have to start a new backup sequence. that's because directly attached backups are stored differently from remote ones. directly attached backups are stored directly in a folder on the drive and remote ones are stored in a sparse bundle.

HT204350 Migration assistant in OS X Mavericks cannot find Time Machine disk
Well, the title says it all. My old Mountain Lion MacBook Pro had a harddrive crash and now I have installed a brand new SSD in it. It was not possible to use the Time Machine to restore the old system to the new disk during installation. So I thought, maybe it will work better after the basic system is installed. Nope. I can still activate Time Machine, but I can't regress even a single folder. And if I open the Migration Assistant it all goes well until I choose to use a Time Machine disk and then it just does not find any disk to use.
Of all the things you would expect from a specialised backup utility is that it should be possible to use for restoring a computer. If it isn't then why the **** have I been saving **** to it? I could have used the disk for a plain copy backup, a backup I could use.
I have seen a hundred of these threads when trying to find an answer. Has anyone found something that works? Has ******* Apple ******* fixed the problem somewhere?In the sidebar of a Finder window, select the icon representing your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) At the top level of the volume are folders with these names, among others:
Applications
Library
System
Enter Time Machine and select the most recent snapshot, which is behind the frontmost window. Are those folders present in the snapshot? -
OS X Lion does not boot when my Time Machine disk is connected
Everytime I boot or reboot my MacBook Pro I am stuck at the grey screen and OS X Lion will not boot. When I disconnect my Time Machine disk (external disk connected via usb) I suddenly get the loading screen and OS X Lion boots properly.
Pretty anoying I think, does anyone have a solution for this problem?Have a look at the boot log messages, using Console.app (also with the "dmesg" command), and see if there's a clue there, or, set the boot process logging to "verbose" (i.e., using TinkerTool System) and find out what's really going on live at boot time. (Also, do you have BootCamp setup, or any ofther bootable partitions?)

Have to wait for Time Machine disk before opening or saving
I can't tell you how irritating it is, when it click open or save (any program) , to hear my Time Machine hard disk begin to spool up. As soon as hear that sound, I know that means I have to sit and wait for the Time Machine disk to initialize and get all set before I can save my work. This is majorly ticking me off.
This problem is present on any document i go to save/open.
Why is the OS trying access the Time Machine disk when I try to open or save anywhay??? There's no reason for that! No one is ever opening up and saving to Time Machine while doing normal workflow! The only thing the Time Machine hard drive should be responsible for is backing up!
I swear, I'm thinking about disconnecting my Time Machine disk while I'm working and just reconnect it when I'm away from the computer...it's getting that bad. I shouldn't have to do that. That's ridiculous.
Any ideas?

The system will wake ALL hard disks when the save dialog is opened TM is not excepted from this. There is nothing very special a TM volume other than its icon.

There are many users who use a TM drive for data other than TM backups.
What make and model is your drive? Some drives have power management controllers which have to be set with disk management software. If you have one of these drives you may need to turn off the hardware power management with this software. The problem here is that some manufactures only provide this software for Windows. Seagate is one such manufacturer -
Browse other time machine disks and hidden folders
I recently did a clean install of Snow Leopard, and used the "Browse other Time Machine disks" option to restore my documents from my backup. Now, however, I want to restore a folder that resides in the hidden /usr, and can't figure out how to do so. Normally, the solution would be to open a Finder window go use Go > Go to Folder and type the path to the folder, then enter Time Machine. However, when using Browse for other disks, once it enters Time Machine, it resets the Finder window to Macintosh HD. Does anybody know how to restore hidden folders from a Time Machine backup on another disk (from a different installation of Mac OS X)? Thanks

it should not reset the finder window when you enter TM. open a /usr in finder. enter commandshiftg and enter /user in popup. this will open /usr in a separate window. enter TM from that window. provided you did not exclude system files from backups you'll see past backups of /usr and the view will not reset. if you did exclude system files from backups then the view will reset. -
I had been happily backing up for a long time, then one day I noticed the icon for my Time Machine disk was missing in Finder. I re-booted the disk, I rebooted the Mac - Still the TM disk would not mount. It shows in System Profiler, but not in Finder. When I plug it into my iMac running Snow Leopard, I get the error message "the disk could not be mounted" (but, again, it shows in Profiler). It works on my PC, no problem.
Any ideas?a TM drive must be formatted mac os extended and windows can't even read this format without extra software. perhaps you plugged it into a windows computer and did something with the drive there?
also, check it with disk utility on the mac. does it show up in Disk Utility? if it does, what format is the TM partition? if it's mac os extended then run "repair disk" on it using disk utility. repair disk, not permissions. -
Time Machine Disk out of space
Every time Time machine does a backup I get a message saying that the disk is full and it will delete the oldest backup. In fact, the disk has tons of free space. When I do Get Info on the disk it says that 214 gigabytes are available. My internal hard drive which it is backing up only has 22 gigabytes on it.
As things stand now I can only store about 6 days of backups and things will certainly get worse.
I am running Mac OS X 10.7.2. I have VMWare Fusion installed and Windows 7 as a virtual machine under Fusion.here it is:

I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
All systems are running 10.6.8.Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

I backed up two different computers on the same time machine disk. Now, one of my computer is dead. I can see the backups on my time machine disk. How can I get the backup data that belongs to dead computer. When I enter time machine, I only have access to corresponding backup. I do not want to destroy the backups. My timemachine backup structure looks like below:

Now, my Computer-1 is dead, and I am using Compter-2. Copy error -36 when copying from Time Machine disk to Mac
Since using OS X 10.6.(.6), I can't copy certain files from my Time Machine disk to the Mactintosh hard disk without getting a copy error -36. The error doesn't occur with all files: for example pdf files will copy without problems, but Filemaker Pro files and iCal files don't. May be it's important to mention that when I retrieve files from the Time Machine disk, I have to mount the "sparse bundle" with my user files first and then drag the files to the desktop or an other place. This is because I'm running File Vault. If I try to retrieve files that were backed up under OS X 10.5, I get no copying errors at all. So it looks as if Snow Leopard has something to do with it. Is there anybody who has seen this problem before and knows how to solve it?
Ok, I finally was able to complete the Disk Utility Repair, and it says everything is ok. Still the problem in restoring presists.
One thing I noticed is that most files that Time Machine restore chokes on have an added set of permissions added to the file or folder with the same user name as mine, and the permissions level says "Custom". Thus it has 2 sets of permissions defined with the same user name, one with Read/Write and another with the same name that says "Custom." Am I explaining this well? Maybe this is a clue? -
How to Move a Shared Time Machine disk to another Mac?

I have a network with three macs. Initially, I had a Time Machine disk connected via USB to Mac A. Mac A and Mac B used that disk for TM backups.
Now I have coupled the Time Machine disk (via Firewire if that matters) to Mac C.
Mac B can't find the Time Machine disk anymore (as well as Mac A I guess), although the TM disk itself has still the same name. When I explicitly open the TM disk on Mac C in the Finder on Mac B, Mac B does not recognise it as its original TM disk.
After I clicked Change Disk in the Time Machine preferences on Mac B, I was able to reselect the TM disk. However, it doesn't see that there is already a long history present from Mac B and Time Machine plans to back up from scratch.
How can I tell Mac A and Mac B that the TM disk that is now connected to Mac C is still the same disk?
