Bootcamp - Access user files

Hi all,
I'm trying to access my Mac OSX snow leopard files through bootcamp and I'm having a few issues. I'm able to access my mac partition through windows 7 but when I get to users then my own section the folder is empty. Any hints or tips? I'm guessing that it's an access privileges issue, but I just can't figure it out.
Thanks in advance,
Tom R

Hi Tom,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
This is a general MBP forum I think you might have a little more success reposting on one of the Bootcamp forums.

  • Not Using Index on File Server When Accessing User Files Directly on Server

    It appears to me that on a server with an indexed network share (Desktop Experience and Search Indexing roles/features installed), if you access the share directly on the server using its drive path, you can search the folders using the index, which
    is much faster and supports finding words inside of the files in seconds). However, if you access the same shared folder via its network path from the server itself, the server ignores the index. I have this experience/problem across all shared folders on
    the Windows 2012 R2 Server. Details and my most specific goal follows.
    In addition to a laptop, I frequently work directly on a Windows Server 2012 R2 computer. We have Redirected Folders set up on DFS (for failover redundancy) so that my Documents folder is in:
    \\network\redirections\user\documents. This all works fine on Windows 7 and 8 client computers connected to the network via Offline Files.
    The problem is on the server itself. The server has Desktop Experience enabled and Windows Search is installed. If I navigate manually through the DFS root folder to my documents folder, I can search and it properly uses the index. This proves the location
    is properly indexed. However, if I access the folders through the official "Documents" folder from the Folder Redirection (a network share pointing to the same server computer I'm working on), it performs an un-indexed search (slow and ignores file
    contents, but does find files eventually if the search term is in their filename). Is there a way to force the server to use the indexed search on the Redirected Folders (my Documents folder in particular) when working on that server when logged in locally
    on that server?
    I suspect a workaround would be to go into the Registry and manually change the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders to point to the local DFS folder instead of the network share name, but at least one problem
    with this is then if I save files with links to other files (e.g., a linked Excel table in a PowerPoint, a mail merge to Access database in Word, etc.) on the server computer, those links will point to d:\DFSroot\... (a physical drive on the computer) instead
    of \\network\redirections\user\... (a universally accessible network path) and so none of the other computers will be able to find the linked files, defeating one of the
    major benefits of using Redirected Folders.
    I can't believe that I need to choose between indexed searching and proper path names in saved files. Surely there is a way to use an indexed search on the server itself?
    If you need any more info to help me troubleshoot, please let me know.
    Thanks for any help,
    Colin

    Hi Colin,
    It seems that we can not use indexed search on DFS shares. Windows Search works well when users directly access the server. That is, the server is not made available through Distributed File System (DFS).

    Do you have antiVirus installed on the sharepoint servers?
    These folders may have to be excluded from antivirus scanning when you use file-level antivirus software in SharePoint. If these folders are not excluded, you may see unexpected behavior. For example, you may receive "access denied" error messages when files
    are uploaded.
    Please follow this KB and exclude the folders from Scanning.

  • If I connect a time capsule via ethernet to an existing internet connection and use it to create a private wifi network for my wireless devices, will other users on the primary network (not the private wifi one) be able to access my files on my TCapsule?

    Like it says in the title basically.
    I want to use a time capsule to store my files and backups and access it from my phone and MacBook Air. However I do not want the others in my house who are currently connected to the same wifi/ethernet router to use my connection or my TC hard drives.
    I had also been thinking about wirelessly extending the wifi network (a linksys N router) but I guess that will allow everyone to access my Time Capsule?
    I hope you guys can help me.
    Regards, Guido

    ......will other users on the primary network (not the private wifi one) be able to access my files on my TCapsule?
    No, if you have not provided them with the Time Capsule device password.
    Users will be able to "see" the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder on their Macs, but they will not be able to access the drive or the files.
    I had also been thinking about wirelessly extending the wifi network (a linksys N router) but I guess that will allow everyone to access my Time Capsule?
    Same answer as above.

  • Unable to access my 'User' files as I have no permission

    I have recently had my 1Tb hard drive exchanged in my 27" iMac (late Oct 2009) as the S.M.A.R.T. disc software informed me the the disc was failing and the Yosemite update would not install on the drive.
    Before the replacement went ahead, I backed up the drive using 'Time Machine' to two external hard drives (belt & braces...). On the iMac's return, I installed Yosemite and after following the install process was required to enter my Apple ID which I did using my @mac.com email address. After uploading my original files from the external 'Time Machine' drives I have found that some of my latest accounting details are missing. On further investigation I have found that the files are now stored on a 'Deleted User' file and the computer will not let me access them as I don't have permission... My original computers password was my @gmail.com account which is the one I use for my iTunes account.
    Does anyone know of a solution to my issue?

    Drag that folder to the desktop, click Authenticate, and provide your administrator password.

  • How to restrict users to access the files directly from /irj/go/km/docs/doc

    Dear Experts,
    I have made a folder in KM where I have saved some files, and also I have made a application from where user can access those files.
    But the users are able to access the files by directly typing the path of the file in internet explorer, I have to restrict it that the user should not be able to access the files directly.
    Please give your helpful suggestions.

    Hello,
    You can have a link/button react to a mouse clic by reading the KM document and putting it on the htpp flux with the correct header (this is the same kind of code that is used when you generate the pdf). As the file access is in you server-code, user will not have access to the URL...
    an exemple for the WD Java (coming from this [PDF|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/d0cc41cb-9576-2b10-99a6-ab90ef28c73b]), with slight modifications :
    public void exportToPDF( ) {
       //@@begin exportToPDF()
       ByteArrayOutputStream outputStream = null;
       outputStream = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
       // read the file with KM API and copy it to the outputStream
       showPopUp(WDWebResourceType.PDF, outputStream, "PDF Out Put");
       outputStream.close();
    //@@end

  • Slow access to files that are already being opened by another user

    HI,
    A client has a Windows 2008 server setup with Windows 7 workstations.  When a user opens a document (docx, xlsx etc) on the server it opens without an issues.  If a second user tries to open the same file that the first user is in, the second users
    computer hangs for about 2-3 minutes before bringing up the 'another user in accessing this file' box.   This is happening with every file type and with any user.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    Do you mean that only the office files have the issue or all file types have the issue? Please refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Auditing all users file access - too much information

    Hi, I have enabled a GPO With the following: Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Advanced Audit Policy Configuration\Audit Policies\Object Access -> Audit File System -
    Success on a file server.
    After that, I have enabled successful Create files/Create Folders on a folder for the built-in group Everyone.
    That part works fine, I can see when users are creating files on the folders. But I also get a lot of Extreme amounts of other events logged in the Security log, and everything is coming from the backup agent running on the server (NetBackup in this case).
    How come that a backup agent is creating the events like this? It makes filtering much harder afterwards. The business requirements is to audit Everyone who is adding files to a specific folder, not all the rest of the server. The server
    is Win2008 R2.
    Example:
    An attempt was made to access an object.
    Subject:
    Security ID: SYSTEM
    Account Name: FILESERVER01$
    Account Domain: MYDOMAIN
    Logon ID: 0x3e7
    Object:
    Object Server: Security
    Object Type: File
    Object Name: \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy58\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-audio-audiocore_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18619_none_d4cab625fb3adf96\audiosrv.dll
    Handle ID: 0x3c4
    Process Information:
    Process ID: 0x1048
    Process Name: C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\bpbkar32.exe
    Access Request Information:
    Accesses: WriteAttributes

    Hi Steve,
    I feel your pain, I turned on logging on a file server and found the security log filling 4GB in a couple of hours. I think the key is being very selective about what you audit. I found this article useful and it had some powershell and ideas for helping
    make sense of the information overload - http://blogs.technet.com/b/mspfe/archive/2013/08/27/auditing-file-access-on-file-servers.aspx
    In my opinion though you really need a third party solution to make this viable, two I've looked at are
    Netwrix File Server Auditor and
    FileAudit which seem very similar in functionality and ease of use. These basically read in the event log to provide long term archive and reporting on it.
    Good luck,
    Tim

  • Cant access other users files

    When i log in i cant access other users files. a red symbol is on all of the files. if i could get some help it would be great.

    future_ortho,
    Of course you can't: The file permissions and ownership are set correctly.
    Before somebody tells you how, one question: Why look at other people's files?
    I'm uncomfortable telling somebody how to invade another person's privacy without hearing/having good reason to do so.
    (They can put files they want to share in the Shared folder.)

  • Unable to access server files shares with Active Directory Users

    Quick breakdown of my issue.
    I have setup a Yosemite file server running the latest version of Yosemite and Server.
    File sharing in Server.app is enabled and shares have been created
    The server is bound to my company's Active Directory and you can directly login to the computer via AD credentials.
    The big issue is this, unless the user has directly walked up to my server and logged into it at least once, they cannot authenticate to the file shares via their AD credentials.
    For example: Administrator (me) I can login and access all file shares without issue.
    Jane Smith (SMITH) who has actually walked up to my server and logged in via her AD credentials, can also access all file shares. (That she has access to)
    John Doe (JDOE) who has not logged into the server in anyway, cannot authenticate to the server file shares  at all (even though I have granted him permission) He just gets an "Access Denied" message.
    I have gone into Directory Utility and changed the search order to give AD priority and this still doesn't resolve the problem.
    We have unbound the server from AD and added in back again and still not able to resolve.
    If you open Server.app and go to add someone from AD to a file share, it finds the AD user quickly and everything looks right. but still unable to authenticate to the server if they haven't directly logged into it before?
    All of the documentation and google articles I have found say my server is setup correctly, any help would be greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks in advance!

    I figured this out. In Mountain Lion Server, it doesn't matter if you give the user rights to a shared file or folder, if the user doesn't have access the File Sharing service, they can't get it. I had to find the specific users in the Server app under the AD in the Users tab, and give them rights to the File Sharing service. I think you can do this for a whole AD group as well, but I haven't tried.

  • Authenticated user name not written to access log file

    Our users are authenticated with certificates to an LDAP directory server. The Access log file is using the Extended-2 format.
    The name of the authenticated user is now written in the Access log.

    Anybody know why?

    I've got the same problem with Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.02 for Linux.
    When I installed it, authenticated users were visible in the access log. Then I tryied to change format and since that moment, this information is disappeared.
    Any news about this bug?

    Hi there,
