Bootcamp and switching to wireless

I have a new 13" Retna PowerBook w/Mavericks with bootcamp installed. If I unplug froma  wired connection the wireless adapter never wakes up. If I re-boot all is well - so , you can see the issue if I want to be mobile......

If I switch to a wireless connection, will I notice a slower internet connection?
Not likely. As long as the signal is good, the wireless connection will be faster than your Internet connection.
Also, if I get Airport, do I also need to get a separate router? Or will the base station suffice?
The base station has a built-in router that's sufficient for most people.
And will it work with my 533 G4?
Does the G4 have an Airport card in it? If so, you're set. If not, you can use a wireless-to-Ethernet bridge; Buffalo makes a nice one with a built-in 4-port Ethernet switch if you'd be satisfied with 802.11g speeds (I have two of them). If you want 802.11n speeds, the selection is more limited.

Download and intall the Windows Support software. You can start Bootcamp Assistant again and only select the option to download the support software. Then follow the instructions to save and install the support software.
Or, manually download the support software here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/downloads/.

Thanks for your observation. I realize they are different versions, but when I use the "Software Update" menu, this is as far as it would update. Is there some way to update the iMac beyond what "Software Update" does? I've tried it several times.
    Please Note.
Upgrading OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) to 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion) is not an update. It is a paid upgrade. Just as with 10.7 (Lion) you must purchase it from the App Store with yor Apple ID and install it after backing up your current computer state for safety.

    hi,
i wanted to resize my windows partition. I was thinking of using the default backup system for windows. Then switching to mac partion, deleting the bootcamp and then restoring a new enlarged partition from the backup. Is this possible?

I see youhave gotten recommendatons for using WinClone or CampTune.  I have used both and they both work well.
You have asked about using the WIndows 7 utility to backup your drive and restor it onto a larger partition.  I will tell you fro experience that this will probably not do what you want, and may do something that you don't want.  You can use the Windows 7 native backup tool to make a backup of your Windows 7 partition.  It will most liekly end-up making a dive image of the whole drive.  When yourestore that backup, it will try to re-create teh partitions of exactly the same size as they were when the backup was taken, so it won't increase your partition size for you.  Worse, since Windows doesn't natively know how to read./write HFS+ volumes, the backup will make a partition for your MacOS (replacing any you may have now), except that the copy restored by WIndows will be totally worthless, and you will not be able to boot MacOS from it, or even read it under MacOS.
Now I will tell you that I've also had some fairly good success working with the free tool CloneZilla.  Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, and everything else mentioned does cost you money, I thought I would throw it out.  CloneZilla is not as easy to use as the tools mentioned, but it has worked for me int hte past, so it is something to consider.  I tend to use CampTune myself, but that was because I purchased a bundle deal for them and it was included in that deal.

I just got my cable company to switch my wireless router to a wired one considering now I have the wireless airport device (the newest one) but now I can't get a wireless signal. The router works when directlyplugged in,the aiport wireless device is green. I've tried going through my new MacBook Pro settings and it the diagnostics check, it says network changes detected, I tell it that it "yes" does connect to a cable modem, it tells me to restart it, after I do it asks if there are any other devices hooked up ( firewall) and when I say no it tells me that it can't fix the problem.
Now I know that I probably have a new IP address because of the cable company switching the boxes but it was working fine with the other box, now there isn't a signal to be had on it!
Please anybody out there that can help!!!??

Any time you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle with the new equipment. Check out the following AirPort User Tip. Please post back your results.

  • Bootcamp and Windows 7 Problems

Hi there. I have just installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp on my Macbook with Leopard. I have a few strange problems and just wanted to see if I could gain any help or see if anyone else is experiencing these problems.
Main one is when I close the macbook shut, then open it back up the screen stays black, i can hear it open back up but its like it just stays in Sleep mode. I then need to hold down the power button and switch it back on.
Secondly when I use the down, up left or right arrow button to scroll down in the respective direction the cursor is moving around like it would on a word document. It will scroll down eventually but only becuase the cursor has reached the end of the page.
Thanks for your time and I really hope someone can shed some light.

  • Some apps crash out when I close their window and switch to the Finder

It has been doing this since day one.  I'm a college student and bought a laptop to replace another really old mac system, to use as my main system.  The issue I'm noting is that on some apps, if I close out their window and switch to the Finder, by either click on the desktop, or by command tabbing.  The application seems to crash.  I say 'seems' becuase I'm not certain it's crashing.  It does this in Text Edit along with pages.  I'm trying to find out if it's supposed to this or if it's supposed to be a new feature.  There is never a crash log made that I know of, nor a dialog box stating the app crashed.  However, it does this by itself, without my quiting out the app by command q nor file>quit.
This has been relatively minor and hasn't caused any large problems.  To me it's an annoyance and inconviencning.  Which is why I waited until summer break at school to investigate.  Other classmates with older mac book pros but the same OS version have not had this problem.  Wondering if I have a botched isntall of OS X from the factory.  I've already had it in for service for the motherboard.  The cooling system was not correctly attached to teh CPU at the factory and cooked itself.
I'm tempted to do a reload of the OS from the diagnostics partition the system came with.  I haven't transferred much of anything from the previous system that this one is replacing.  Now would be an ideal time to do anything of this nature rather than say in the middle of next semester.
The issue occurs in TextEdit, Pages, and that's it so far.  I really have almost nothing loaded on the system.  I dual boot into another OS for using Maya and other various software apps.  The issue does not occur with Safari nor FireFox nor Preview.  It seems confined to Pages and TextEdit.  It can be extremely annoying however when typing an essay in Pages.  Perhaps it's a feature that was introduced that I can turn off?  Going from a 5 year old Mac Mini to a MBP, LOTS has changed.

Sorry for taking so long to reply.  It's still doing it.  I'm kind of wondering if something like a preferences file is corrupted, however, I have to do a total system reload to begin with to eliminate any potential corrupt data on the windows 7 install.
Back story.  When I first got this thing it was running super ridiculously hot.  It's the first laptop I've ever owned however so I had nothign to use for reference.  After about two months of it getting brutally hot, it did a BSOD in the windows 7 install I did via bootcamp.  It never turned back on.  Took it to the Apple store in Novi MI and they stated it somehow ran so brutally hot the CPU did a solder reflow and the whole motherboard shorted out.  Even worse though, I had gotten this hot before rendering stuff in Maya and Vue.  I had done burn in tests when I first received the system, it had passed, or so I thought.  They couldn't even get the system to turn on at the Apple Store.
The tech at the apple store told me that one of the heat sink pins on the CPU just plan broke off and another wasn't attached correctly.  Essentially the system kept overheating as I was consisently completely maxxing out the system doing CGI test renders for my junior animated short film.  The cooling system was never fully connected at the factory according to the Apple Tech.  I don't know how literate everyone reading this is on computer engineering but, when you overheat an IC, whether it's an ASIC or CPU, they dont' immediately crash, they corrupt data.  To further complicate the mess and increase teh chances of data corruption, with the 4th gen Intel i series CPUs (which the MBP uses), they moved the northbridge directly into the CPU die.  So if teh CPU is overheating, the chances of data corruption inadvertantly go up even higher.  I'm suspecting that happened in the first few days of owning the system but that it was minor at that point.  It can take months for the effects of corrupted data to propagate out and be visible to the user.
I would assume that they did a diagnostic test on the SSD when it was in for service, to ensure the SSD didn't overheat.  The tech did state that if the drive failed the diagnostics, they would have ot replace the drive and henceforth all my data would be gone.  Not really a way around it.
Currently under the windows 7 install with Maya and Vue, later iterations of the scene file, from Maya, for my animated short film, have a reproduceable glitch involving a gamma shift and camera selection.  Part of the scene files seem to be corrupt and were saved that way.
Reloading the OS from the recovery partition did not fix the original problem I've been having that I initially asked for help with.  I'm considering wiping out the recovery partition in addition to reinstalling windows 7 and OS X again, it would be the only way to completely eliminate the possibility of any corrupted data floating around on either partition.  I don't have a way of knowing if corrupted data was written to the SSD beyond the corrupted Maya scene files.  The only way I can be sure that it's 'contained' or eliminated, is if I completely wipe the drive and start from scratch.  Now would be a great time rather than in the middle of working on my senior thesis for my BFA degree.
I'm wondering if you could point me to documentation showing how to wipe out all the partitions, including the recovery one.  My understanding is that there is a way to do a 'net boot' or 'net recovery' over a broadband connection using Apples servers.  The idea of doing a Live boot from a Ubuntu distro to run fsck is appealing but it would be pointless.  The file system shoul be fine, it's the data the file system points to that I suspect is corrupted at somepoint.  Unless you recommend otherwise and or formatting.
The overheating also corrupted my journal but there is no way to recover it, I overwrote the earlier file(it looks like uncompiled C++ and jibberished text) when I saved it after completing an entry.  This was many months ago.  Though the idea of attempting a restore with Ubuntu Remix or other recovery Linux distros is appealing I'm doubtful I'd get far, though it's an SSD not a traditional harddrive and they don't work the same.
Back to the main point though, I suspect the overheating corrupted a prefs file which is causing the glitch I'm seeing, and reloading the OS did not fix it.

  • Is it still impossible to do bootcamp and VMWare or Parallels?

I use bootcamp extensively to run several windows programs, mostly MS Office 2010. I also need to use Office 2011 so being able to switch back and forth between OS X and Win 7 is essential (I do this because I'm a consultant and curriculum developer--not because I'm a masochist). I've used bootcamp for years and it does a pretty good job once you get all the drivers issues sorted out.
I've also used VM ware, but had a couple of bad experiences where I lost my virtual machine and all the data on it.  I do backups of course, but it was still really inconvient.  Plus the driver situation when doing the virtual thing rather than bootcamp just wasn't quite there yet--another reason to use bootcamp. So for the past 2 - 3 years I've just been resigned to using bootcamp.
But occassionally it's just not convenient to reboot my system to switch from OS X to Windows, especially when all I want to do is check out some quick thing under windows but then quickly get back to Mac--two reboots!  On the other hand, when I'm doing a windows client demo or such where failure's not an option, I'd want to be in bootcamp because it feels so much more solid.
I'm wondering if Apple or the virtual OS companies have made any changes that would allow me to have both bootcamp, which I'd use for windows in most situations, AND a virtual machine in OS X that I could use for quick trips to Windows but keep working in OS X without having to reboot.  Most of my data files are on dropbox, so even if the bootcamp partition and the virutal machine disk were inaccessible to each other I'd be able to access the files I need.
If the answer is simply NO, you can have bootcamp or virtural machines but not both, then my next question is this:  Is either VMware or parallels getting close to being as robust as bootcamp for running windows, or should I just plan to keep on bootin' for another few years?

    Hey Bob,
Thanks for the information. My last experience was with VMWare 1 and I don't think this functionality was available then. I downloaded today version 4 and at this point I am running Win 7 within MacOS.  Haven't tried rebooting to my bootcamp partition yet or printing or sharing, etc. If it works as advertised though I should be a happy camper.
The import option doesn't strike me as a good one for my situation.  I have 500GB on my MBP and 120 GB allocated to my windows bootcamp partition. If I do the import option with VMWare I'd basically need another 120 GB of the total space and then I'd have two unsynchronized windows disks, one under bootcamp and the other under VMWare.
Running VMWare as a Mac application I can see it's a bit slower than running in bootcamp, but I expected that.
This is exciting stuff and I appreciate you taking the time to enlighten me.
    Thanks

  • Boot camp and switching between OS's

I haven't made a partition from Boot camp yet but am planning to for vista for certain apps which don't have a mac version. My question is that I was under the impression, from I think the WWDC Keynote, that the new boot camp would allow the user to switch between Windows and Mac OS X without restarting the computer, but through putting one side to sleep and then waking or booting up the other (it wouldn't allow them to run simultaneously but at least you wouldn't have to restart every time). As far as I can tell no one is able to do this yet. Are they still going to add this feature in to boot camp or Leopard? Or is it already there and I don't know where to look? Or am I just going bonkers and imagining things?

I'm well aware that boot camp won't run two OS's simultaniously. But I was under the impression from a Keynote before it was released that the new bootcamp would allow you to switch between the two OS's _without restarting_. There are differences between simultaneous usage and switching without restarting. And no VMWare and Parallels will not cut it for what I will be doing (boot camp is a far better choice for my use). Just to clarify I can live with restarting to get to one side or the other but I'm just asking if it were possible in boot camp to switch between without restarting yet, as I remember being mentioned before Leopard was released.

  • Bootcamp and Parallels

Can I run bootcamp and Parallels on the same Mac? How do I run Bootcamp if I've already installed Parallels? Do I have to re-format my drive and start over?

Here's why you want to install both: Parallels accesses your existing Windows installation you did with Boot Camp. You don't have to boot into Windows if you install Parallels after you've installed Windows in its own Boot Camp partition and you don't have to install Windows again. It's much safer because the work you do is saved on the windows partition, not on a virtual drive. Of course, you can still boot to Windows if you need to.
You can open Windows programs right with your Mac apps and switch among them as if they were native by using Parallels. You will have to activate Windows again for some reason, but it's painless unless you've installed it more than twice in which case you have to call Microsoft.
Boot Camp is free of course and simply partitions the hard drive, you don't "run" boot camp as ZooCrew already pointed out, you actually boot to windows on startup. You do "run" Parallels which accesses your windows partition. Quite slick. I use it for Quicken because the Mac version blows hard, and another program I have to use for work that is Windows only for now.

  • Customer Retention - Bait and Switch

In April, after doing a lot of research, I moved a line from Verizon to AT&T instead of renewing my contract with Verizon.  After about a week, I received a phone call from Verizon asking to win back my business, and they offered me a really great plan.  $100/month for two lines, unlimited text and unlimited calls, and 2 GB data for each phone (plus some kind of overage protection) with a WiFi hotspot on my line. (This amount would increase to $110/month after 12 months). I explained that for that deal, I would switch back, but that I would need the phone soon, because I only had a week to return the other one from AT&T.  They said no problem, they'd ship one right out.
A week went by and I still didn't have the phone, and there was only 3 days left in the 2-week grace period for me to return the AT&T phone.  I called Verizon and they said they had a record of the call, but the order for the phone never went through.  They could overnight one to me, but I'd have to pay the extra $15 for rush shipping.  Could I just pick one up at the store? No. It had to come from the website/main company.  I grudgingly paid the money to get it in time, did the return on the last possible day, and activated the new one.
The first bill I got was a confusing mess, with charges for the old plan, and activation fees for the new phone which were supposed to be waived in order to win back my business. I had read on the bill that it usually takes a month of billing for plan changes to show on the bill, but I decided to call about the activation fees.  The operator was very kind and explained that yes, there had been a mistake, but he was able to fix it and get me into the right plan.  He also refunded the activation fee.
A few days later I tried to use the hotspot for the first time.  This is a key feature for me and if it wasn't included, I would never have switched back.  But when I tried to turn it on, I got a message on the phone to contact customer service.  I explained to Sean (removed) the problem, and he activated the hotspot for me temporarily as a courtesy, but he wanted a few days to research the problem.  When he called back a few days later, he said that he discovered that the Customer Retention Specialist who initially called me was a third party who did not work for Verizon, and this person input the plan wrong.  But it should be all fixed now at the rates that were offered to me.  I reiterated the plan details several times for confirmation.
The next bill I received was also incorrect, and so I called again and explained the entire history of the situation to Lily (removed) in the Utah office.  Lily read through all the notes and almost immediately said, "Ahah! I know what happened!  You are supposed to be in the Loyalty Plan!"  She did some typing, checked some things, and confirmed, again, the details of the of the plan that was offered to me.  She also gave me a $20 credit for all the trouble.  I hung up the phone feeling confident the matter was finally resolved.
My next bill still wasn't right.  This time I spoke with Melanie (removed), who had been with the company for a long time, and understood the situation in short order.  She, too, made adjustments to the bill and "got me into the right plan."
Two weeks ago I tried to use my hotspot and got the same message to call Verizon.  This time I spoke with Bree in Utah, who explained that there is no such plan as what I'm describing, and that it is "impossible" to activate my hotspot at the current price.  In order to get the hotspot service I would have to pay an extra $20 per month, although she could waive the first month only.  I said that was totally unacceptable because it wasn't what was offered to me, and I would not have cancelled my AT&T contract for those terms.  She said she understands, it's terrible--her own carrier had done it to her, too, so she knows how I feel. I was flabbergasted.  A manager would not be able to speak with me for about ten minutes, and a manager could not call me back.
As if all these trials weren't enough, I just looked at my bill, and it's wrong.  I'm paying $119.99 a month + taxes to total $135, and I still don't have a working hotspot, the one feature, the linchpin, that swayed me to switch back in the first place.
I'm writing this here in hopes that someone who knows how to proceed will read it and tell me what my next step should be.  Today, it is four months to the day that I reactivated my Verizon service; four months and six interactions with Verizon's customer service later, I am still being charged more money and receiving less service than I was promised.  From my view, this is a textbook bait and switch to re-up a new contract.

I know exactly how you feel, I was thinking about going back, but now that I have read your statement, this makes up my mind for me, seems like all of the reps are incompetent. It's sad that these guys have monopolized the industry. Worst customer service, its questioning how much they pay to have their name rated for best customer service awards. The saying is true, money talks. Out with Verizon.

  • Switching from wireless (Airport) to wired (LAN)- three questions

Perhaps I'm not doing this right, but...
    1. When I'm on a wireless connection and logged in to my peer-to-peer networked desktop, then plug in to the wired connection, the system freezes (spinning wheel) for about a minute if I try to turn off the wireless connection before telling me the network connection has been broken. This begs a second question. You can try this at home on just about any laptop running OS X 10.3 +
If I remember to manually disconnect/log off the network machine (and later reconnect it on the wired path) then all is cool.
I suspect therefore that my MBP cannot switch between the connection paths for a logged in connection. Is this true?
    2. Is there a way to administer whether and which connection (en0 or en1) is used for certain programs (for example, by the port number allowed in each mode?), in addition to their prioritization in the Network Preference panel? In Windows XP settings of which network connection is used for a given service is supported, but without priority.
    3. While the MBP can 'see' two connections, it can only 'use' one of them at a time. Is this correct? How can you tell in that case where there are two network connections, which one is being used?
My reason for needing this feature of assigning a particular port connection is that my backup program, Retrospect Backup, doesn't want two network connection paths in use for itself (on it's port connection).
Two paths assigned to the same client cause all kinds of havoc when that program can see two appearances of the same client machine.

On my MBP (en0) is the Ethernet and (en1) is wireless, select a connection and check the bottom. Watch the "Sent Packets" and "Recv Packets" to see where the data is coming and going.
I have a desktop with Windows Vista with a shared folder with my media files. If I connect with a wired connection OS X doesn't see the share, but the wireless connection will. If I connect the wireless and Ethernet and stream video to my laptop the packets come over the Ethernet connection. It won't connect over Ethernet, but the files come over it, so it seams to be able to use both. Hope fully one of the pros on here can help you more.

assuming it is an optical mouse (no ball etc.) then there aren't any moving parts involve in the motion detection
so there's a faulty component or connection
from what you describe it could be just a loose/broken connection, so if you know someone familiar with electronics see if they can open it up and have a look
